Alternative Rock music review Every generation enjoys, "Every Morning".
How do you satisfy a van load of mixed generations on vacation in Hawaii? The one & only song that did it was, Sugar Ray's, "Every Morning". Their upbeat & nostalgic tune is a "WINNER"! That song keeps me going ALL DAY LONG!

Alternative Rock music review Every Morning by Sugar Ray is a classic

Artist: Tori Amos

Tracks:
  • Hey Jupiter (The Dakota Version)
  • Sugar (Live)
  • Honey (Live)
  • Professional Widow (Merry Widow Version-Live)
  • Somewhere Over The Rainbow (Live)
It was an earlier five-song collection that helped introduce Tori Amos to the masses with a quiet cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." There's nothing quite so inspired on Hey Jupiter, which gathers together a remixed version of the title track and four live performances. The remix adds a few high-tech touches at the edges of the song, without either improving or detracting from the original. But fans may be happy with Amos's between-song chatter and an achingly fragile reading of "Somewhere over the Rainbow." --Steve Appleford

Alternative Rock music review Hey Jupiter!
Tori's single from 'Boys For Pele' is simply and utterly beautiful. This CD single contains 2 of the tracks from BFP in a little different style. 'Sugar' is a beautiful song while 'Honey' is a harsh song about a failing relationship. The last track, the cover of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' is stunning. A must for ANY Tori fan, you will not regret it.

Alternative Rock music review An Exceptional EP!!!
The first time I heard the album version of "Hey Jupiter" on 1996's BOYS FOR PELE, I thought it was the most beautiful song singer-songwriter Tori Amos had created. When I learned of a remix of the song, I was rather weary, since the LP version seemed so flawless; but upon listening to the "Dakota Version" included in this EP, I was blown away by Amos's ability to take a perfect song and make it perfect in a completely new light, in an alternate universe, if you will. The added strings and bass in the remix take away the quiet stillness of the original version, while maintaining some sort of softness and darkness, and utter desperation. More often than not, when I want to hear this song, it's the remix that I tend to listen to as it entails much more complex emotions.

The rest of the tracks included in the EP are live renditions of "Sugar" (a b-side from 1992's LITTLE EARTHQUAKES), "Honey" (a b-side from 1994's UNDER THE PINK), "Professional Widow" (an album track from BOYS FOR PELE), and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (a cover of Judy Garland's classic tune from the film THE WIZARD OF OZ). The live tracks are great in and of themselves, but we're also treated to Amos's humorous and insightful anecdotes between songs, which is one of the best parts of her live shows. Her fragile, stunning rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" displays Amos's amazing talent as a musician.

If you are looking to add some EP's and CD singles to your Tori collection, be sure to add this one. In fact, you may want to start with this one to give you a taste of what you're in for. Dim the lights, open your mind, and take it all in...

Alternative Rock music review Another gem from the goddess
I bought "Hey Jupiter EP" a few years ago when I was on my Tori binge. I think it was just shortly before I got to see her live for the first time and right around when I started getting heavily into her music. One day at a local record shop, I bought a slew of singles and EPs by Tori Amos, "Hey Jupiter EP" was one of those purchases. I haven't listened to the EP in a long time so I decided to throw it in. I always loved the song "Hey Jupiter" from a very difficult album to listen to "Boys For Pele". After listening to the Dakota version of "Hey Jupiter", I am quickly reminded which version I love more and that is the Dakota version. I still love the "Boys For Pele" version but I do believe that the Dakota version is vastly superior. The primary reason I bought this EP was to hear Tori's interpretation of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". It is a breathtaking cover. I was simply blown away the fragile, delicate vocals and melodies. Tori Amos is one of the few artists who I love when she covers a particular song. She makes the song her own. I also enjoyed the live tracks of "Sugar", "Honey", and "Professional Widow". I particular enjoyed Tori's brief explaination of "Sugar". I found that rather humorous. Her little anctedotes during her concert performances are one of the reasons why I love seeing Tori perform live. "Hey Jupiter EP" is a brief reminder of my concert experiences of seeing Tori Amos perform live.

Alternative Rock music review The angelic Cocteau Twins album.
Everytime I hear this group I am always amazed at their timelessness. In all of music history, there has NEVER been a group like the Cocteau Twins. My life was totally changed after I discovered them back in 1982, when I was the import buyer for Tower Records. There music is evidence of what we can become as human beings if we want to. Whatever created this ball called Earth we all live on, I see in Cocteau Twins music. And on each cover, the Cocteau Twins are showing the listener what they can expect to hear. And the cover of Treasure, shows this as well. The group is saying to the listener, you have to lift the veil to see the beauty of what is underneath. Whenever you listen to a Cocteau Twins album, you must play them loud, that is the only way you will be able to really hear all that was recorded. And I also suggest that you close your eyes as well, that way you will be able to surrender to the beauty of the Cocteau Twins. My five favorite songs on "Treasure" are 1)Lorelei, 2)Persephone, 3)Aloysius, 4)Ivo, and 5)Amelia. I rate this group Timeless, and this album 5 stars.

Alternative Rock music review One word: FOOTSTEPS
Yup, buy this for the one song. Not to take anything away from Yellow, but Footsteps is the true gem here. Its worth the 5 bucks. Classic stuff you should own.

Alternative Rock music review 3 Amazing Songs
I bought this CD because i loved Footsteps and Yellow LedBetter, and it is a great single, having those extra 2 amazing songs. Had i known that they would have been released on lost dogs i may not have bought it, but it is still a cool pearl jam thing to have. Usually the extra songs on a single are sort of sub par, but any of these songs could easily belong on a pearl jam album.

Alternative Rock music review Buy this for the b-sides!
I confess that I bought this single, not for the title song, but for "Yellow Ledbetter." Jeremy is a good song, but there is no reason to review it here, everyone knows Jeremy. "Yellow Ledbetter" is an amazing song. Eddie Vedder is often difficult to understand. He is not known for his clear anunciation, but it is never more apparent than on this track. From the first time I heard this song I was so into the music and wanted to sing along, but I, honest to God, could not comprehend a word. I bought the cd and listened to it over and over again and came up with my own version based on my understanding that makes it very interesting lyrically. It is Eddie Vedder's mumblings that make this song so intriguingly brilliant though. I wouldn't have it any other way.

So, as I confessed, I bought the cd for "Yellow Ledbetter." What I wasn't expecting was "Footsteps" which is equally as amazing and a very pleasant surprise. Great lyrics with just Eddie's blissfully strained vocals and a guitar. It just doesn't get any better than this.

So often, the b-sides of singles are forgettable but in this case, they outshine the single. Even if "Jeremy" is not your favorite PJ song, buy this cd for the other two tracks. It is a definite worthwhile purchase.

Alternative Rock music review High
What can I say. Probably one of my favourite albums of all time, along with U2's "The Joshua Tree" and Lene Marlin's "Playing My Game". This album is quality, and as close to perfection as any compilation has, and perhaps will, ever come to.

Smooth vocals, incredible lyrics, and heart-stopping melodies are what this album provides. 'High' and 'Postcard From Heaven' are my personal favourites, although every song is strong here.

Probably one of the most replayable albums I've ever come across, "Postcards From Heaven" is a masterful collection of vocal music. A must have for any fan of music itself.

Alternative Rock music review Aural Postcard From Heaven is Timeless Soul
As a huge Spinners fan with an appreciation and deep respect for Seals and Crofts, my jaw dropped when I heard Postcards From Heaven, a near-flawless hybrid of them both, with a dash of Beatles and Blackbyrds sprinkled in for good measure. Every song on this mesmerizing album bears repeated plays. But don't think that this record is merely an exercise in retroactivity; the Lighthouse Family sound is indeed contemporaneous to Seal and especially the Christians (why does it seem there is no reference to that immensely talented combo anywhere on Amazon?) not to mention Jai and the late Ephraim Lewis. One day the Nineties will be rightfully looked upon as a golden era for British soul, and the Lighthouse Family will be as worthy a representative of that revival as any. NOTE: some European pressings of Postcards From Heaven, such as the one I found, do NOT include "Lifted", one of three sizable hits (the others being "Raincloud" and "High").

Alternative Rock music reivew Special Treat on a Gloomy Morning
I spent a gloomy morning scouring for new songs to add to my music collection. But some reason nothing resonated with me. Then I landed on an odd sounding New Jersey group "Grey Eye Glances." Upon investigation I learned two things:

1. Grey Eye Glances' name is cribbed from an Edgar Allen Poe poem

2. This is one terrific CD!

I ordered the album and my gloomy morning became much brighter.

Alternative Rock music review Always a Favorite
I've been a fan of GEG since the days they were known as Sojourn. I fondly remember seeing them at various venues around Philly... the Tin Angel being a favorite, and even the Borders shows! Yes... I love these guys. And this is far and away their best album. I remember looking forward to its release with almost unbearable anticipation. I'd been seeing them live for a long time, and really enjoyed their two self-released CDs. Listening to Eventide/The Passing of the Evening live was the highlight of every concert. But when this album was released, I was a bit surprised. They'd redone some songs from Further On...! And frankly, the new versions weren't as good! (Please get thee a copy of Further On... and listen to the "originals," especially "Something to Live For.") Even so, this was a very welcome album, and one they have yet to match. Yes, Painted Pictures was quite good. A Little Voodoo... well, not as good. Too quirky for me to actually love it, but I do like it. One thing that has always surprised me is the frequent comparison to October Project. I don't see much of a correlation, myself. I think they're closer to Fleetwood Mac than to October Project. But even more to the point: Why make comparisons at all? GEG is GEG. And that's not just a good thing... that's a great thing.

Alternative Rock music review Can't stop listening
I'm hooked. Addicted. I hum it all day long. I bought this as a die hard October Project fan looking for something new. It's now a toss up between OP and GEG. The song Chills stays in my head all day. It's haunting, as is Angel and There. The CD starts off with Hard which has you you dancing in your seat in the car. The rest just sucks you in. I love the richness of Nobels voice and the lyrics that stop and make you think. It's my new favorite CD and I just can't stop playing it!

Bruce Springsteen used the Jersey Shore as the backdrop for his tragic-heroic tales of everyday people in nowhere places. Ween, as you might expect, have a slightly different take on the proud coastline between New York and Atlantic City, the place where they recorded much of their new album, The Mollusk. Gene and Dean are more interested in dead jellyfish, rusted beer cans, flotsam and jetsam, dirty syringes and other assorted detritus that washes up. As for the kind people who live near the water? Ween's only interested in the ones who lurk at amusement park freak shows--and even then, only the really twisted ones. The Mollusk was made between rounds of surf-fishing for bluefish and bass--both before and after the water pipes burst in their winter beach house/studio, leaving recording equipment adrift in an indoor flood. Naturally, the album sounds thoroughly soaked. This is Ween's 'wet' album, in much the same way last year's 12 Golden Country Greats was their Nashville album. Songs like "The Golden Eel" and "Ocean Man" mine the water motif quite literally, while the hilarious title track and "Polka Dot Tail" take it one step further, the first by aping the dopey Brit folk mysticism of Donovan's "Atlantis" and the second by lumbering whimsically like "Yellow Submarine." Other tracks, such as the opening ditty "I'm Dancing in the Show Tonight," are more impressionistically soaked: the piano notes sprinkle lightly, the tuba plods like a foot through mud, and the vocals warp as if they were accidentally thrown into the washing machine. Though they're good enough songwriters to play it straight and almost get away with it ("It's Gonna Be" sounds pulled from the Peter Cetera songbook), the Ween boys are at their best on songs like "Mutilated Lips," when they're foraging through the grotesque, the surreal, the outright nasty--anything that titillates their sick sense of humor. They're still guys who get off on weird sounds (such as "Pink Eye"'s vacuum cleaner melody and dog bark percussion) and wiener jokes ("Waving My Dick in the Wind"). And what's most fun for us is hearing how much fun it still seems to be for them. --Roni Sarig

Alternative Rock music review Every song is my favourite song
If I could come back as anything I wanted it'd be as a spliffed-out 27-year-old hairball discovering this record for the first time. The Mollusk is simply that exceptional. I mean, how do you even begin to describe what happens to the air when you fire up this platter of ultrasonic seafood? Just listen to how Gene--or maybe it's Dean--punctuates the two pauses in Polka Dot Tail and tell me these dudes ain't the vandals that took the handels. Some bloke here called The Mollusk timeless and that's the word alright: instantly, gorgeously timeless. Completely restored my faith in lyrics too, having more or less shunned them ever since I was inadvertently exposed to a song sung by U2 on the radio in 1987.

Alternative Rock music review Brilliant
There is no album I listen to more frequently than "The Mollusk." With this album, I believe Ween shut everyone up who considered them a novelty band. They are at their best and I rank this as my favorite album of all time.

Alternative Rock music review The best album of the last 25+ years
This album is amazing. To me it ranks right up there with the best albums of all time. "The Mollusk," in my mind, sits comfortably with such greats as "Abbey Road," "Before and After Science," "Beggar's Banquet," "Songs in the Key of Life," and "Selling England by the Pound." Ween have shown us that they are indeed the masters of the homage, tackling genres as disparate as adult contemporary ("It's Gonna Be (Alright)"), sea shanty ("She Wanted to Leave (Reprise)"), and progressive rock ("Buckingham Green," which is probably the greatest song Genesis never wrote) all on one 44 minute album. Every song is priceless, but as an album they represent arguably the pinnacle of postmodern rock. Brilliant!

Julie Miller's Hightone debut, Blue Pony, was a critical success based on its winning combination of Miller's superior songwriting, plaintive vocals, and husband Buddy's rockin' production. Broken Things is, if anything, a step up, with nary a weak song in the bunch and guest appearances by Patty Griffin, Victoria Williams, Emmylou Harris, and Steve Earle. Many of its charms are encapsulated in the opener, "Ride the Wind to Me": swinging, solid grooves; twangy harmonies (courtesy of hubby); and a chorus that lifts the heart while it captures the ear. Miller's voice is a study in contrasts: an unforced "little-girl" breathiness combined with a bluesy roughness around the edges. Her obvious foundation in country and mountain music and her ability to add slight twists to her lyrics make ballads like "I Still Cry" and the title song into new classics rather than exercises in "retro." Buddy's time in Harris's Spyboy band has helped him add some of the "ambient-roots" sound of Wrecking Ball to the proceedings. It is all to the good, further enhancing an emotionally resonant record. --Michael Ross

I loved this compilation of music by Julie Miller...she continues to weave emotions to song beautifully and has no difficulty delivering what comes from deep within. I also love her both gritty and delicate music stylings. I've always been drawn to Ms. Miller's ability to convey that which we all think we know...but we know she KNOWS. Keep bringing us your music!

Alternative Rock music review Good job Julie!
Julie Miller has been singing since high school, and her voice has evolved into something uniquely her own. Her early idol was Linda Ronstadt, and her early sound was eerily similar . Not anymore. I would know that distinctive voice anywhere and I love it's raw edges.

"Orphan Train" was my favorite track on this CD, but it has an eclectic mix of stuff that a lot of people would enjoy.

Alternative Rock music review FLAWLESS
I met Julie miller several years ago. She had just put out her first album. She told me in a phone coversation that she didn't drive. In jest she said she had trouble chewing gum and walking at the same time, let alone try to navigate traffic. Well, fortunaltely for all of us driving isn't required to be a genius. I knew when we spoke that there was something special about her. She had an innocence about her like Amy Grant had when she first started out. Unlike Amy since her first album, Julie Miller continues to top herself with each release. There is something about how she delivers a lyric that reaches the depths of human sensitivity. My favorite song on the album is I KNOW WHY THE RIVER RUNS. Don't feel bad Julie, Einstein had problems with shoelaces. Stay off the road but definately stay in the studio. The theory of relativity has been covered. All you have to do is keep singing and people will be talking about you for years to come too.
