Fans of Georgia duo Indigo Girls are dedicated to this act for very specific reasons: there's the rare (bordering on brilliant) harmonies and counter melodies, the seemingly effortless acoustic guitar playing, and a host of emotionally cathartic lyrics that make the listener feel like they've been reading someone's diary. That said, the Girls reached a point around the time of this album where opening up their souls for song perhaps felt less appealing than general storytelling. Does that make the music bad? No, but it is decidedly different; 1992's Rites of Passage comes off more as a musical jam than a night alone in front of a campfire. The Roches, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, and Lisa Germano all contribute to that effect, providing a musically interesting but perhaps emotionally less challenging effort than some of the duo's earlier works. --Denise Sheppard

One of my favorite albums ever
_THE_ essential Indigo Girls albumI just saw on Amazon's "Essential CD's" section that they didn't have "Rites of Passage" on it - that's so wrong! If you get only one CD by the Indigo Girls (that isn't "Retrospective", which gives you a smattering of songs from all their albums), get this one. It is them at their most beautiful, folky, gorgeous melodic period. (Happily, I had the privilege of seeing them perform both acoustically and plugged-in during that period.) Admittedly, "Swamp Ophelia" is a very close second, though. THe strongest tracks on "Rites" include, but are not limited to, "Ghost" and "Galileo". They're just great. Get the album - and "Swamp Ophelia" too, while you're at it.
One of the best recordings ever captured!I am a huge music fan. I have had this CD for years, and recently popped it in for the heck of it while cleaning my house because I hadn't listened to it in a few years. How could I have forgotten? When it got to Romeo and Juliet I froze in my tracks. Never in my life have I heard a more emotional recording. It is the closest thing to perfection I have ever heard. I swear that after recording that song that they must have had to send in a janitor in to mop up Amy Ray's guts because they were all over the floor.
This CD is amazing and beautifully recorded. The lyrics blend perfectly with the music. I encourage you all to rediscover this CD, and if you don't own it, rest assured that your money will be well spent.

Blackbird 7/10 A little western trown in,overall decent.
Theif 10/10 I know everone on here talks about how powerful this song is,and they're right!
Consuming fire 9/10 This song talks about how our God is consuming fire.

Classic Third DayThis album is far from new, but many people are just discovering it. I bought this one after getting both of the Offerings discs, to get back to the "classic" Third Day sound. The songs on this album really rock, and of course, have excellent messages.
"Love Song" is absolutely beautiful and one of my all time favorites. "Thief" and "Consuming Fire" which were re-done for Offerings are worth having both versions of.
It is very "southern-rock" sounding, but even us Yankees can appreciate this fantastic album, and Mac Powell's distinctive voice really brings power to the lyrics.

Southern Rock At Its BestThird Day's debut is a powerful Christian album with a southern rock sound.
Mac Powell is certainly one of the best songwriters and vocalists on the planet. Combining those traits with the rest of this band is an awesome combination.
The songs 'Thief' and 'Consuming Fire' on this album are among my all time favorites. Anyone who has never had the pleasure of hearing Third Day sing 'Thief' should take the time and enjoy that experience.
I highly recommend this CD.

Average review score:

Upbeats & BeatdownsIt was a better than average album and I enjoyed it. I believe it ranks three in their best stuff.
A little inconsistent, but a lot of fun to listen toThis album contains a good portion of Five Iron Frenzy's best songs, including their consensus best song, "A Flowery Song." There are some tracks I find a bit annoying, boring, or repetitive in the middle of the album, but the beginning and the end make it worthwhile. A lot of the songs won't be the type to be your favorite song, but they're enjoyable to listen to. Not just that, but unlike a lot of ska, Five Iron Frenzy songs often make you want to sing along. The lyrics are actually a bit heavy with political and social commentary, but that's easy enough to ignore if you want to.
If you're looking for some poppy ska, buy this album, and you won't regret it, if only because you'll hear "A Flowery Song."

Wow!What a great CD! This is the type that you can listen to the whole CD, and not skip to all the good songs--they're all good!
They've come a long way!I remember hearing these guys for the first time when I was in college. Their sound has very much matured and this album is FANTASTIC! I highly reccomend it to anybody!
Consistently GreatNot quite as good as Magazine, but close. This album is consistently mellower than Magazine, which may or may not be good, depending upon your mood. But one thing that hasn't changed is how great the music is. It has a twinge of Radiohead feel to it (which can't be bad), but not so much that it comes off as imitation or unoriginal. I guess "Mother's Eyes" is this album's "Paranoid Android." This album's sound is beautiful, and the lyrics are more expansive than Magazine. Anyway, buy them both - Vertigo is worth the purchase for "Angel Dust" alone.

Wow 2000, a 30-song collection by contemporary Christian music's top artists, is the pick of the litter thus far. Since 1996, the Wow series has wooed and won a large youth-oriented audience, with each of the yearly discs going platinum in exponentially rapid time. Strongly committed to youth issues and preserving family safety and harmony, Wow products contribute a sales percentage to charity and Wow 2000's share goes toward four antiviolence organizations. Additionally, this year's discs are encoded with software that provides Internet access while screening out objectionable content. As for the music, Moms and Dads will have no quibbles. On the purple disc, Third Day and Caedmon's Call deliver country-inflected delights, tunes from Jennifer Knapp and Plumb beg for repeat plays, while Audio Adrenaline and the O.C. Supertones pump things up. The silver disc showcases favorites Jaci Velasquez, Rebecca St. James, and Sixpence None the Richer, who contribute their hit "Breathe." --Paige La Grone

Some outstanding tracks. . .Some of the songs on these two CD's were GREAT, but some did not appeal to me (this is just MY opinion). My favorite songs are "I Want to Know You (In the Secret)," "Stranded," "Show You Love," "Can't Live A Day," and "Friend of Mine (Columbine)". Another good song is "Waiting Room". I recommend this CD to anyone who likes good Contemporary Christian music.
Another nice WOW album. This has some really good songs on it. If you're like me and don't want to buy albums, and just get a bunch of the most popular songs for the year, then I highly recommend it.
Great! Amazing! WOW!!The WOW selection of Christian CDs is amazing. They have compiled CDs full of the best of today's contemporary Christian artists, and have done it successfully. With WOW 2000, you get a little bit of everything. From my personal favorite, dc Talk, to Chris Rice, to Third Day, Jaci Velasquez, Audio Adrenaline, Jars Of Clay, Michael W. Smith, etc. This list goes on and on. There is even a song by The W's from the show VeggieTales called 'The Rumor Weed Song' which is obviously geared toward little children but is great for people of all ages. The WOW collections have amazed millions of adults, teens, and children all across America. You can not go wrong by buying these collections. The songs are very spiritual and uplifting and are great for anyone who is trying to start a Christian music collection or for someone who is adding to their collection. I highly recommend this CD. If you enjoy this one, try the other WOW Christian compilations. Buy this one right away, you will love it forever!

A Solid Punk AlbumWhile it won't go down in history with And Out Come the Wolves..., Against the Grain, Punk in Drublic, or Dookie (nor will any Pennywise album), it is still one of the better albums of the modern punk age or whatever the hell you want to call it. To me, Pennywise is a cross between Bad Religion and NoFX in that they retain somewhat of a hardcore-edgy/semi-melodic sound but are also very drvien by more catchy, pop-like riffs and vocals. This album displays that sound very nicely, with some damn catchy and well-done tracks such as Peaceful Day, Every Single Day, and Killing Time.
The problem is that Pennywise is no where near the calibur of BR or NoFX, mainly because I think their sound is almost too straightforward and their lyrics too simple. And while I'm a huge fan of simplicity, this album just feels a little too plain. And as is the annoying thing with many punk records, all the songs sound the same. What makes it worse is that the track names are all very similar as well. But if you can get past that, I think this is a brilliant little album that is worth the pruchase for any fan of punk music

Remember your prom theme, or the song that was playing during your very first kiss, or that tune that was popular when your baby was born? Hear those songs now and you are transported back to the moments and emotions that they captured. The tracks contained on the Push Stars' After the Party are capable of evoking those same nostalgic feelings upon first listen; the essence of this album lies in its familiarity. Tracks such as "Minnesota," "Cadillac," "Meet Me on Main Street," and "Any Little Town" could be any little songs, containing narratives of feelings we've all felt, loves we've all lost, places we've all been. The Push Stars hail from Boston, a town famous for producing edgy guitar bands like the Pixies and Galaxie 500. But unlike either of those bands, the Push Stars' music never reaches beyond the listener's comfort zone. Leader Chris Trapper is a solid if not entirely inventive songwriter, but sometimes it is nice to listen to a CD that's nothing more than instantly enjoyable. After the Party is the perfect accompaniment to sunny days, open windows, and good moods. --Beth Massa

Pushstars I found my way to the Pushstars via Great Big Sea's cover of "Everything Shines" on their live album, "Road Rage." I have to say that I like the Great Big Sea version a million times better than the original (and I may be biased because Great Big Sea is one of my favourite bands and I am more familiar with the GBS version as most people that I know are), but with that said this is a pretty solid album with no discernable stinkers on the track list. Stand-outs are "everything shines" and "cadillac."
GreatI saw The Push Stars in Birminham,AL at a New Years Eve party in 1999/2000, and I haven't heard anything about them since. I loved their music and I want to see them again.
An Absolute FavoriteI first heard the Push Stars perform at the WBCN River Rave, where their melodic music and intelligent lyrics were somewhat lost on the hard-rockin' crowd. It took me some time to actually buy the album, but once I did, I was not disappointed. From the very first track, Chris Tapper's slightly scratchy voice and their guitar and percussion combination bumped this album up to insta-favorite status.
Each song is upbeat and catchy, but the sound is rich and warm, unlike some mass-produced artists out there. "After the Party" is definately the Push Stars best album. I bought Meet Me at the Fair, and found it good, but with a few wrong notes-- an album where I have to hit skip more than once. With the exception of track 2, the album is consistently good throughout, especially "Any Little Town," "Everything Shines," "Minnesota," and "Back to the Party." Strangely, though the same "standing in line for you" metaphor appears in three songs!
Buy this album and see the band in concert if you can! You won't be disappointed. The songs stay meaningful and won't get tired after a few months unlike some fly-by-night pop sensations. Fans of Goo Goo Dolls, Barenaked Ladies and Belle and Sebastian will enjoy.

Released on the independent Caroline label in 1990, Frizzle Fry documents the San Francisco Bay area thrash-funk trio at its energetic best. The bare-bones production serves the group's skeletal sound well and makes the most of nearly live performances of gems such as the antiwar "Too Many Puppies," the stoner testimony of "Spegetti Western," and the madcap litany of "Groundhog's Day." Larry LaLonde's guitar is more melodic and concise than the squirrelly avant-gardisms of later albums such as Pork Soda (many of the lines were written by original guitarist Todd Huth). Bassist Les Claypool, meanwhile, is just stunning. By turns sounding like a scrappy Larry Graham or a dirty-minded John Wetton, his four-string slaps, slurs, and squeaks form a perfect union with drummer Tim Alexander's jazz-informed power beats. Claypool's goofy vocals owe a lot to P.I.L.-era John Lydon, with lyrics about Corn Chex, striped bass, and porn films. An inspired and assured studio debut. --James Rotondi

...BUT IS HE INBRED?Les Claypool, Primus, The Frog Brigade, Oysterhead...the names of his bands sound as equally stupid as the music he makes. The only reason I've even heard of this idiot is because my friends won't shut up about how great he is. "Dude...he plays a five string fretless bass guitar, do you know how hard that is?" Whatever. Meanwhile I'm yawning at all the Les Claypool DVD's they insist on brining over to my house and playing for me. "Look man, he plays so fast!" Wow...an inbred hick who over estimates the importance of himself and charges outragous amounts of money for his fans to see him live. Sounds like a real music prodigy to me. Bottom line: his music sounds STUPID!
To be honest, the only thing I noticed at all about the Les Claypool footage I was subjected to watching was his teeth! If there was any doubt that this guy was a back-woods inbred it diminished the moment I saw those hilarious Bubba chompers! What is this guy thinking? He's ripping people off left and right with his lame albums, inflated concert prices, and ridiculous autogrtaph signings. Does he not know he can spend some of that "hard earned" money on a dentist and get those gross, crooked, yellow teeth fixed?
Oh yeah, another thing about those DVDs I have to mention is all the Les Claypool wannabe's I see standing in the crowd playing their air-base guitars. GET A LIFE LOSERS! Can you imagine how insignificant these morons are, can you imagine what they're lives are like? They have no idenity, no originality, no sense of belonging whatsoever so they turn themsleves into Les Claypool clones! Complete with lame sunglasses. If any of you Les Claypool clones are reading this right now I have a message for you...YOU'RE IDIOLIZING A SCHMUCK WITH BAD TEETH WHO ENJOYS RIPPING YOU OFF!"
I pride myself in knowing that Les Claypool has never made a dime off me. JAM ON LES...YOU STUPID IDIOT!

If you're a bass or drum player...CHECK THIS OUT!!!I'm a big fan of Rush especially Neil Peart's FABULOUS drummin'! And then there's Geddy, the bass legend. Take those 2 sentences but replace Neil and Geddy with Herb and Les. These guys are kick-a** musicians (not to discredit Ler)! I've heard this and STSOC, and this one is a hell-of-alot better. Songs like "To Defy the Laws of Tradition", "Mr. Knowitall", the title track, and "Pudding Time" really show that this is TRULY Primus' best effort by far. If you dig Rush (like me; note: the only Rush CDs I don't have are "Rush", "Fly By Night", and "Vapor Trails") the you'll DRILL "El Primuso"!
Their bestOr maybe sailing the seas of cheese is? but either way it doesn't matter because they are both great. Primus are both extremely talented and extremely unique and anyone who likes weird music should check out this album because they're a great crazy band and this is a great crazy album. Best songs are groundhogs day, frizzle fry, john the fisherman and harold of the rocks. Buy this album.
Three Hits is a nice enough start, with great lyrics and rhythms. But then we go right into Galileo which is one of my favorite songs. The harmonies are gorgeous, the melody is great, and the lyrics are just so engaging. Is there meaning for the fears we have? Why do people maintain their superstitions? How long till my soul gets it right?
But that's not enough - Ghost is incredibly poignant and is a song that got me through many rough times. You can sing along with it at the top of your lungs, knowing that the Girls knew exactly the pain you feel. Those smooth harmonies are just brilliant.
It keeps going. Joking is another pain-and-angst song, shouting back your anger and sadness at an ex. Love will Come to you has the most amazing visuals in it, me myself with my face pressed up against love's glass.
Romeo and Juliet has just the right amount of attitude in it, for a twist on the classic tale. Even the "later songs" on the CD hold their own. Chickenman is one that seems bizarre at first listen, but has the most catchy tune you've heard in a long while.
Highly highly recommended!
