Alternative Rock music review awesome!
this album is amazing! it seems as though no one besides virginia colloge kids have heard these guys, which is such a shame. the lyrics are clever, vocals smooth, and the intrumentals are so creative. if you like anything like bob marley or dave matthews this album is definitly worth it.

Alternative Rock music review http://thisismodern.iscool.net
Fighting Gravity has hit the music scene in a big way with their first release on Mercury Records. "You And Everybody Else" appeals to every music lover out there, including you and everybody else. The amazing musical talent of these guys from Richmond, Virginia is definitely something to write home about. Never has any band ever put more music and energy into ten songs than these guys. This disc features some redone FG classics and new tunes that will make you fall out of your seat. I suggest standing while listening due to the need to jump and move around. Their sound has reggae, ska, and rock influences and incorporates each into every song. The best jams on this album are definitely the highly acoustic "Forgotten" and the horn-driven "Walk Into My Eyes." The music is powerful and lead singer, Schiavone McGee's vocals flow like a waterfall: smooth yet intense. It's fitting that McGee's vocals flow so well because with song titles like "Waterfall,"

"Lost In The Rain," and "Bend The Light" you can actually picture the motion of the music in each song. "Lost In The Rain" and "Bend The Light" are two classics revisited on this album and are definitely the best versions to date. By far, the songs with the best and most vocal influence are the "Wait For You" and "Turn To Me." These two songs alone will either cause you to move gracefully or fall deep into a musical trance. Fighting Gravity's grooving, jamming sounds are highly hypnotic and will leave you seeking more. They have 5 albums before this one that you must check out if this disc amazes you, and it will. These guys are exactly what the modern rock music scene needs to revive itself.

Alternative Rock music review awesome. simply awesome.
okay, a really good friend of mine was talking about how much he loved fighting gravity, and all i could think of was 'who the HECK is fighting gravity??'. he talked me into going to one of their concerts with him. i went, and i was completely won over. they are an awesome band.

well, i put off buying the cd, just because i figured i had enough cds. well, about two months ago, and decided, eh, what the heck, i'll buy it. i did. and i'm just as impressed as i was when i went to the concert, if not more. i haven't gotten tired of listening to them. they're almost as good as the pat mcgee band, who i'm absolutely crazy about (i recommend 'shine' too).

buy this cd. NOW. i may sound demanding, but its good advice. trust me.

Alternative Rock music review Best Cd
This cd has to be one of my favorite hardcore cds. This cd has some really good breakdowns and I prefer this voice than the new one. Im kinda dissapointed in the band now but they're still good. I think if you like hardcore you must buy this cd. It's there best one yet.

Alternative Rock music review this cd is 100% hardcore
All i got to say is i jus got this cd. and its my favorite over 18 visions.. blood has been shed... and even poison the well.Throwdown has some of the best HARDCORE BREAKDOWNS i have ever herd Buy this cd Igive it 5 stars EASILY

Alternative Rock music review A truly great hardcore album.
I love throwdown!(points to name). In my opinion this is Throwdown's best album. The whole album is just unforgettable. Every track is a hardcore masterpiece. The breakdowns are sick, the lyrics are sincere and simple, and the drumming is right on. The songs on this album are the kind of songs that get stuck in your head for weeks at a time. By the time you listen to this album 3 or 4 times you'll be singing along to every song. This is one of the catchiest(is that a word?)hardcore albums i've ever heard, and that is a good thing. This is truly an amazing hardcore album. One of my favorites right up there with Converge, Bane, Comeback Kid, Terror, and the almighty Minor Threat. This is a must for anyone who enjoys hardcore.

One of the most unique, if misunderstood, talents to emerge from the vaunted 1980s Los Angeles punk/new-wave era, Stan Ridgway arguably owes more than most to the art-rock and modern jazz which crucially informed that scene. He's shrugged off MTV's stereotyping of his former band Wall of Voodoo to forge a rich, if stubbornly independent, body of solo work, freely retooling his sound and viewpoint along the way. Black Diamond, his 1995 outing (and one of the best, if sorely underappreciated, singer-songwriter albums of the '90s) placed Ridgway in a spare acoustic setting far removed the propulsive synth-sense of The Big Heat, his expressive baritone taking on a new warmth and range. Anatomy is an attempt to move both forward and reconcile the various aspects of his previous work. The stirring, elegiac opener "Mission Bell" adds depth and dimension to Black Diamond's tack, while "Train of Thought," "Susie Before Sunrise," and "Valerie is Sleeping" supplant Ridgway's trademark seamy-side-of-life storytelling with more personal--if oblique--observations, set with confidence against music that freely mixes electronics, acoustic guitar, and his plaintive harmonica. Three surprisingly varied instrumentals cue listeners that Ridgway now splits his time between songwriting and film scoring. Ridgway is a true musical rebel, but one with a rich sense of history and no time for the cheap encumbrances of fashion. --Jerry McCulley

Difficult to wax poetic about music. The person who said that Ridgway is the Dashiell Hammett of music was on target. Every song on this CD is great, and they are excellently organized. Start with Mission Bell and keep listening.

Alternative Rock music review The Movie Continues: Stan's Best (So Far)
I didn't think it would be possible to match his last two regularly released efforts, "Black Diamond" and "The Drywall Incident"/"Work The Dumb Oracle." With "Anatomy," he surpassed them both. As an aside, both "Black Diamond" and "Drywall" are available. They can be purchased in download form, from Stan's website only.

"Anatomy" is another incredible soundtrack for the underbelly of America. Stan is the most under rated songwriter on this side of the Atlantic, with 12 new examples that labor the point.

The "Anatomy" CD art is a nod to film scoring, with a nice take/update of the jacket for Duke Ellington's "Anatomy Of A Murder" soundtrack, by way of the graphics used in the TV show "The Wild Wild West."

The two tracks pulled from the "Film Songs" EP sound a bit better here. "Susie Before Sunrise" sounds a little more crisp, while "Deep Blue Polka Dot" (aka "Deep Inside We're Blue") gets a bit of a remix.

The use of instrumental interludes are perfected on this record. You can almost see the betrayal (A desparate kiss? Or maybe a tired sunrise) during "Murray's Steakhouse Story," while "Mickey The Priest" is an absolutely creepy interlude, bringing "Valerie Is Sleeping" and "Mama Had A Stove" together brilliantly. The triptych works well as a companion to Richard Thompson's "Killing Jar," while "Sixteen Tons" is going to stand as the definitive read for a long, long time.

This record doesn't have the viciousness of "Drywall" and isn't as dark as "Black Diamond." It reads like "Mosquitos" without the humor.

The liquid audio software included sets up easy, and the downloads were hassle free. The software has been working error free on a laptop w/NT Workstation 4.0 & SP3.

A five star rating for a six star record.

Alternative Rock music reivew Pretty Damn Good Album
I found the album of this short lived band because 3/4 of them make up my new favorite band, Louis XIV. (So amazing. They're the saviors of rock and roll.) This is a really amazing album. I love Caught Up In You and Eleventeen which are great songs and my two favorite tracks on the album. Convoy put out something really original, which is no surprise considering the ever-brilliant Jason Hill is behind the project. The only reason this gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because I'm not crazy about Wet Cement and So Much You Can Do, which I find a little bit on the saccharine side.

Alternative Rock music review R U in His Arms Tonight?
This San Diego band's reworking of their first Pineapple Sessions release that contains many of the same songs re-recorded with added punch is an excellent freshman set. The opener "Gone So Quick Tomorrow" is a wonderful waterfall of guitar crunch with great sass & swagger in Jason Hill's vocals, "Here today, but you're gone so quick tomorrow, you roll up the pain & you drink up all your sorrow, I don't know if I'm the only one to believe, the only one in this great big world to see." "Here's Looking at You" is another great track with Hill's vocal attitude and Convoy's offbeat harmonies, "Ain't it the truth how I always seem to catch you looking at me." The closer "California Girls" (not the Beach Boys' tune) is a delightful slower tune with a Lou Reed attitude. All of the songs on "Black Licorice" are strong including the lovely "Is He In Your Heart Tonight" with its wistful melody, "Is he in your head right now? Do you think of him out of spite? Are you in his arms tonight? Is he holding you right now? Was it love at first sight?" This is an excellent disc not to be missed. Wow!

Alternative Rock music review GREAT CD
WHy doesnt Amazon sell their first cd the pineapple sessions? You can buy it in local music shops in San Diego. Convoy's new album is on the way in early 2004. Right now the boys are in a project called LOUISXIV. IF they come to your town go see them you wont be disappointed. COnvoy needs to be in everyones collection and not in your underware drawer next to your POISON and BRITNEY scds.

Fatboy Slim did a GREAT job with the remixed version of "Body Movin'". "Peanut Butter and Jelly" is a catchy instrumental. I definitely had to get the remixed version after hearing it on a local radio station here in Detroit...

Alternative Rock music review Still the Best Introductory Compilation
Like the other reviewers, this was pretty much my introduction to Brazilian popular music. The Jorge Ben video was also on fairly regular rotation on Black Entertainment Television in the late 80's and early 90's. What ever happened to their world music shows......

But I digress. Obviously all the reviewers of this record highly recommend it, and I'm no exception. The music is absolutely awesome, and the information (including translations) inside the jacket is priceless. You can also find more stuff on Luakabop.com

Alternative Rock music review Quintessential Collection of Brazilian Excellence!
Every track on this album is a killer! This was the first Brazilian CD I bought and although my collection of Latin music has grown substantially, I still turn to it when all else fails. It's a great introduction to the genre and by far the most comprehensive compilation of Brazilian Pop/Rock/folk music I've ever heard.

Like many countries that have had to put up with hard-line political regimes, music has always been an outlet to vent social & political frustrations, document life and present hope even in the darkest hours. The lightness of much Brazilian pop is often confused for music without guts. It is hard to imagine the music presented here as being in any way dangerous, but the military regime that controlled Brazil during the late '60s and early '70s found it very subversive. So much so that the artists Caetano Veloso & Gilberto Gil were exiled and lived in London for several years. The sleeve notes document all of this extremely well and present the lyrics to each track in the original Portuguese as well as the English translation. There is also a list of the original albums this compilation was derived from, many of which are well worth seeking out (Milton Nascimento's "Clube Da Esquina" being a prime example).

Most of the music on this CD is from the 70's. It's funk, acoustic, guitar, harmonic, vocal, melodic brilliance. Many of 'thee' Brazilian musical exponents are represented here (Jorge Ben, Maria Bethany, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso etc.). There's even a track about football: Jorge Ben's "Umbabarauma" (which has been sampled by Fila Brazillia on the track "Pots and Pans"). It's obvious that this is just the tip of the Brazilian iceberg and it would be hard for a single CD to cover all the aspects & diversity present in Brazilian music. So if you want get started I'd buy this CD, I guarantee that after hearing it you will crave for MORE! (The good news is that Luaka Bop's releases are already in double figures.)...

Alternative Rock music review Excellent Collection
Let me start by saying that I know nothing about Brazilian music. I used to think it all sounded like "Girl from Ipanema." This CD gloriously proves otherwise. While no one collection can capture the breadth of a country's musical culture, this one does a good job of at least illustrating variety in Brazilian music. And the songs are great. There are songs in this collection that make you want to learn Portuguese just so you can appreciate them more. Heck, I've sung along with a few of the cuts without even knowing what I was singing (I do a mean Milton Nasciamento falsetto). It's simply a great, great CD. I don't know how representative of Brazil these selections are, and, to be honest, I don't really care. I just love the music. It's wonderful.

Alternative Rock music review As good as it gets!
I've been a listener of Curtis Stigers since his first album, but this one is as good as any pop album that I have ever purchased. I have a wide variety of music in my collection including Curtis's latest Jazz work, which is also great by the way, but this collection just hits every vein. Stand-outs include "Then I Had This Dream", and "The Last Embrace". Curtis is a tremedous talent and I hope he continues to make music this good.

Alternative Rock music review This is always in my player...
I bought this cd on its release back in 1999, and it is still a firm favourite, and not only that, everyone I play this to, or who has heard Curtis sing tracks from it live - especially "Don't Go Far" and "End of the Afternoon" just want to know where they can purchase it - it never fails to be a big hit !!

Alternative Rock music review Welcome Back Curtis
An excellent CD from a Curtis 'brought back from the grave'. This is a complete change from previous work but none the less is well worth listening to. Some brilliant collaborations with well known artists such as Carole King, Phil Brady show how well regarded he is by his peers. Buy the CD NOW and catch the chance to see him on tour. He signs CD covers, flyers bus tickets and you have the chance to chat to him after the show. How many people do this????? A lovely man who doesn't mind you sneaking a kiss on the cheek. Well done Curtis ....you've still got it.

Alternative Rock music reivew Genius?:
Grown men singing about ghosts, devils, souls, gods, and angels. When they move onto reality they sing about rain, not just rain, but spring rain from the Liberty Belle release, easy to see the genius here. Seriously when you buy an album and put it on you can tell what your going to get with them. It will be solid and hopefully grow on you. Unfortunately the items I have bought from the Go-Betweens have never lived up to their promise. The songs remain precious and dull. This is their best offering, but still it is rather bland and it does bother me when a band is ignorant and conforms to the worldview shared by the masses. They continue to do this and remain a band that delivers many types of love songs. Not always going below the surface, but always trying. Pretentious.

Alternative Rock music reivew Just buy it...
Following the mixed bag of 'Tallulah', '16 Lovers Lane' offers a more cohesive collection of the Go-Betweens unique, ultra-melodic brand of pop. This is their most polished album to date, though the studio-sterile sheen does not detract from the depth or character one typically expects from the Go-Betweens. In fact, the mellifluous, airy feel of the album suits the songs well; crystal-clear (largely acoustic) guitars weave intricate, lovely textures which, when combined with Amanda Brown's oboe and violin, form a mesmerizing sonic tapestry.

Of course all this atmosphere would just meander aimlessly were it not for sharp, solid songwriting, as well as the conviction that emotive singer/songwriters Forster and McClennan bring to their insightful, adult tales of love and loss. "Steets of Your Town" is one of the most beautiful, infectious tunes they've ever done, while its line "watch the butcher shine his knives/and this town is full of battered wives" makes for some brilliant, stinging irony. Likewise, Forster's hook-filled, moving "You Can't Say No Forever" features another thorn beneath the rose with "Yes my world's tumbling down/stone by stone to the ground/please take out the garbage". Brilliant.

What also makes this album different from its predecessors is the ease with which it all seems to come together. On the surface, the songs all seem to have a simple, even effortless quality, though repeated listens expose the complexity and sophistication lurking not far behind the soothing sounds. That they can take simple elements like acoustic guitars and major chords, and weave them into something so refined, demonstrates the brilliance and resourcefulness of this criminally under-appreciated band. This may not be their best album ("Liberty Belle" holds that proud title, in my humble opinion), but it's none the less a fine example of their now legendary, timeless approach to pop.

Alternative Rock music review A masterpiece
The Go Betweens are one of those rare bands with two brilliant songwriters. Add the violin of Amanda Brown and you have an effortlessly transcendent album. The gentle songs of Grant McClennon chug along, 'Quiet Heart' and 'Devil's Eye' are beautiful pieces of music. 'Love is a sign' is my favourite, a poetic masterpiece. There is heart and soul all over this album, in an understated fashion. Musical bliss.

Fourth Dimensional Rocketships Going Up is a first-rate solo debut by veteran rapper Gift of Gab, who is a member of the group Blackalicious and the San Francisco-based association Quannum Projects (DJ Shadow, Latyrx, Lifesavas). There's a strong Seattle flavor here--the album was recorded in Seattle, and produced by two of that city's most established beat architects, Vitamin D and Jake One. This meeting of underground talents results in something truly wonderful: the music is rich with detail, surprises, and suggestions, and the raps are deeply introspective. Though he is often rapping about the stars, the moon, and different parts of the galaxy (as with the track "Stardust," a "Follow the Leader" for the 21st century), the space that Gift of Gab really explores is inner space--the memories, emotions, and desires that constitute the core of his being. Rarely does hip-hop get better than Fourth Dimensional Rocketships Going Up. --Charles Mudede

Alternative Rock music review Amazing Cd
I'm not going to say that Gift of Gab is the best mc, there are many others out there that can lay down better rymes and faster. BUT, gift of gab's lyrics are positive and smooth.

What really makes this cd is the way it flows. I have yet to hear a cd that flows better than this, the beats are perfectly matched to the lyrics and they never really get old (Except for Rat Race which is my least favorite song).

Personally I like this cd than Blackalicious cds, you decide.

Alternative Rock music review Delicious
Gift of Gab= crazy lyracist/ spiritual poet
the beats= catchy/ soothing... cool
the album= one you will enjoy

most of what needs to be said can be read by reviews written by fellow reviewers

GoG is an MC that is not only high skilled and diverse in his spittin (speed, flow) he is intelligent and thoughtful rapping about spirituality, my assumption is that he's studied at least a bit of Zen

it doesn't matter who you are, you'll like this album... guaranteed

peace

Alternative Rock music review Hop on board the Rocketship for a ride of your life!
This is truly a great and meaningful album. I never heard of Gift of Gab until I got this album and it was well worth it. I think he is one of the illest rappers out there today. His lyrics are on point and fiery. The album is like taking an uplifting journey from the very first song all the way to the end. This is influential rap at its best. What I really enjoy about the cd is the noticeable Seattle flavor and it never gets old. It seems like the more I listen to it the more I like it and thats rare nowadays in any album. I may take some time away from listening to it but I always come back to it and it seems to rejuvenate and uplift me. It is a special cd and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

especially for the track 'angels'... this song is suppose to be written for a female. you can tell by the high notes he is trying to hit on the song... a strong female voice should be able to hit it....like jessica simpson...hehe. she sounded excellent on her version... but that is another story...

robbie is great but he is fading in the states and needs a huge comback to get my attention again....

Alternative Rock music review choreograph.... is that the review at the top??
ok so i felt i realllly needed to put a review on as the top review really irritates me. right number one. angels was not written for a girl HE WROTE IT. as for jessica simpson well she murdered the song. we've (in england)loved this song for years it was released 96/97 here. its about when he was addicted to drugs and alcahol he had people give up on him yet no matter what his mum was there to pick him back up and get him back to what is important - she's his angel. it is simple and sweet not breathy and sexy as jessica simpson does as always over complicate things in her look at me look at me. well actually for those in england who don't have cable for newlyweds it's more a case of jessica who??? she really bombed here....

Alternative Rock music review Worth for 'back to good'
Along with ego a gogo on Life through a lens, this is one of the funniset robbie williams songs ever.
