Alternative Rock music reivew Your Eyes Can Be So Cruel
I've loved the film since I was young. I've now got the soundtrack, and I'm desperately trying to get my hands on the poster. Very funky.

The lyrics to some of the tracks shed some more of the 'relationship' between Sarah & The Goblin King. It's so good, and the film has made the transition from watching it as a child, to watching (and understanding) it as an adult. There could have been so much more to the relationship on screen, and this shows in the lyrics. Particularly in "As The World Falls Down", and "Within You". My favourite is definitely "Within You", where I took the title of my review from. How true.

Not much of this soundtrack, is songs, it's more music. There are a few songs in them, but it's mainly just tracks. Of course the "Opening Titles", "Magic Dance", "Chilly Down" (ugh, ugh), and the two afore-mentioned tracks feature David Bowie. "Chilly Down" is the worst song however, but I hated the scene in the film. (The one where those fire-red things took off their heads, and various limbs - the scene didn't work, the song doesn't work.)

My favourite track is definitely "Magic Dance" with "Within You" following a very close second. "Magic Dance" is on repeat in my headphones, and is a very feel good track, unlike the rest of the music. It's also been extended from the film, and is certainly one for dancing round your room like a mad hatter. The rest of the music, is very spiritual, and is certainly something you could just have on in the background, while relaxing, or doing whatever. It stands alone from the film as well, and not many soundtracks have the ability to do that.

This soundtrack is a must for any Labyrinth fan (as is the poster - gimme!) But probably not for David Bowie haters, or those who cannot get the image of him out their head in tights!!! Oooooh err.

Alternative Rock music review The BEST film ever...
And the best music in it!
I Grow up with this film.
I will always love Labyrinth.

Alternative Rock music review Unlike Jareth, this music has power over anyone...
I have been a Jim Henson fan since I was young. It's sad that I was never able to see Labyrinth back during it's prime but I did however become attatched to The Dark Crystal. Now that I am older, I finally bought Labyrinth. And three hours later I went out and bought the Soundtrack.

The soundtrack is an amazing soundtrack. When I listen to it I can clearly invision the scenes from the movie. I have become a small fan of David Bowie and his singing voice (not to mention his many vocal talents). I am in love with "As The World Falls Down" because it's one of those songs that can sing you to sleep, whisper in your ear. It's a beautiful melody that is played throught the movie.

But what I really think deserves a lot of credit is Trevor Jones hauntingly synthizied score. It reminds me of the 80's! "Sarah" has to be my favorite track, because of its almost hypnotic fairy-like melody and the interweving of Jareth's theme. And the last insturmental, "Home At Last", when Sarah sees her friends from the other world wish her a farewell.

"...If you need us."

And then the reprise of Underground on a more happier theme!

Clearly, if you are a fan of 80's music, David Bowie, Jim Henson, fantasy, Trevor Jones--in final words, GET THIS SOUNDTRACK! Even if you are not that much of a Bowie fan, you will learn to at least appreciate him! :)

Alternative Rock music review Fun ska at its best
I love this CD. The Aquabats have a great fun way of playing music and telling silly stories. The CD has a lot of funny songs like The Cat With Two Heads. The entire CD will have you smiling and feeling like dancing.

Alternative Rock music review Easily Their Best
Although none of their albums are bad, this is by far the best one. The Fury of the Aquabats is 13 amazing songs that are hilarious and great to sing along to as well as 2 cool instrumental songs and one song im not crazy about (Attacked By Snakes). If you have the slightest liking for ska, funny music or just upbeat, fun music that makes you happy then this would easily be my number one reccommendation for you. All you need to do is pop it in and no matter how you were feeling before... you are guaranteed a smile after the first couple of seconds of Super Rad. It is just impossible to be sad when listening to these guys. My favorite songs are Super Rad, Red Sweater, Captain Hampton..., Story of Nothing, Idiot Box, My Skateboard, Lobster Bucket & Theme Song. This not only their best album but one of the best ska albums as well.

Alternative Rock music review the aquabats will always be top notch
It seems like no matter what these guys come up against, they still manage to put on a great live show and release awesome albums.

The Fury Of The Aquabats is probably one of my favorite albums that the band has ever released. Even if these guys aren't on a major record label with tons of funding behind them, they put their heart and soul into the music... which fans can really respect!

If you're ready for some funky up-beat ska music, I'd encourage you to purchase The Fury Of The Aquabats today. You won't be wasting any money by investing in these guys, i promise!

  • I Wandered By a Brookside

  • Way Beyond the Blue
Minus all the machinery that the music industry can put behind an artist, Eva Cassidy sang bewitchingly in Washington, D.C. and then died without fanfare in 1996, when she was a mere 33 years old. And then the world began hearing Cassidy, thanks largely to Songbird, a posthumous collection of locally released album tracks that went on to garner media attention, critical praise, and commercial success. This collection gathers both live and studio cuts delivered within warm, mostly acoustic settings; often it is simply Cassidy, her voice, and her guitar. Inside are some of Cassidy's best-executed covers, beginning with Paul Simon's "Kathy's Song" and ending with a stellar rendition of the traditional gospel "Way Beyond the Blue." In between are heart-wringing versions of Bill Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine" and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." What distinguishes Cassidy so completely is her offhand ability to transform songs beyond their initial character with a voice that brilliantly mixes an airy floating quality and an edge that you know can pop open to reveal a belt-it-out strength to rival the best in the singer's trade. --Andrew Bartlett

Alternative Rock music review Absolutely Amazing
Eva's haunting voice lives on long after her too-short life. This is a fabulous album where she reimagines some old standards and reinvents some new ones. It's a stellar piece of work.

Alternative Rock music review Hauntingly Beautiful
Words, can't describe the beauty of this album, so I am not even going to try. Take a chance on it, it's the only way you will discover her!

Alternative Rock music review A lost treasure
This is one of the saddest/best albums to own. It's absolutely wonderful, blending covers of some of your favorite blues/standards with original music. If you're a Smallville fan, you might even remember that haunting rendition of Time after Time. The only sad part of this is that Eva is gone and we will never be able to get new things from an incredibly talented artist.

It's hard to escape your roots, especially when you've grown up in the South. For Third Day, it's never been truer than on Time, the band's third release and the first to openly embrace their Southern rock traditions. While producer Monroe Jones coaxes a somewhat softer-sounding Third Day in this pleasing effort, the band still rocks hard for the most part. "Took My Place," for instance, is a Southern-fried rave-up powered by the twin guitars of Mark Lee and Brad Avery paced by the gritty vocals of Mac Powell. Yet Third Day also lessens the blows, as with the poignant ballads "I've Always Loved You" and "Your Love, Oh Lord." Fans will get the best of both worlds in the loose, rootsy "Don't Say Goodbye," one of the album's best moments. Time captures a band maturing and owning up to both its spiritual and musical legacy. --Michael Lyttle

Alternative Rock music review Ohhhhhhh,man!
This CD is just so amazing! My favorite songs on this album are:I've always loved you, believe, your love oh Lord ,and give. These 4 songs I would say, when Third day wrote these songs they really reached down into their hearts. But,let me tell you, there is no missteps or fillers.I would really recommend this album.

Alternative Rock music review Musically, Third Day's best album
After their worst-selling album, "Conspiracy no. 5," Third Day must have known they needed to stick with their roots and create a CD comprised of their signature southern rock and classic rock blend. The final product ends up being 33% southern rock, 33% Christian contemporary, 33% country, and 100% pure genius.

While lyrically this album is not as completely open or beautifully written as some of their later work, the music varies from soft ballads to raucous rock and roll. When the album starts with the gentle ballad of "I've Always Loved You" and rolls right into the deep southern blues "Believe," it's apparent that the album will be a rollercoaster of emotion and feeling in their music. "Took my Place" is a heart-and-soul southern rock peice with their typical message of Christ dying for us, while "Never Bow Down" is a rockin' call for Christians to stand up for what they believe in. "Your Love, Oh Lord" makes it's debut on the album, quickly turning into a crowd favorite on and off stage. "Don't Say Goodbye" is a rootsy classic-rock style peice. "What Good" calls for the giving up of material treasures for Christ, and "Sky Falls Down" is a fun tune with an optimistic outlook on the end of the world. The album ends on "Give" which is probably the most openly worshipful song on the album.

Overall, Third Day's album "Time" is easily the best. It's no wonder they gained almost instant popularity at this time and grew into the Christian band that almost everyone from the southeastern United States loves.

Alternative Rock music review Third Day: rock chameleons.
Well, at first, the reason I purchased this cd is because of the song; 'Your Love Oh Lord (Psalm 36)'. I saw the video for that song many years ago on the christian music t.v show 'One Cubed' and the song struck me. It was kind of like my initiation into christian rock. It is such a fantastic song and it means a lot to me. It reminds me to deepen my faith and sometimes when I struggle, that song brings me back to that time and place when I first heard the song, on my knees in front of the telly. It is a source of comfort to me.
The rest of the cd is very strong e.g the opening song, tracks 4 and 6, as well the others.
Something I must mention is that this was also my introduction to southern rock. If you don't like southern-rootsy rock, you might not like this compilation, save for the ballads but I believe if you do listen to it enough, it'll grow on you.
Maybe, I'm already a biased Third Day fan but I have to say they are one of the greatest rockers of my generation and when you compare all of their recordings, album by album, something you can not fail to notice is their ability to smoothly adapt to and churn out different styles of rock while sticking to the Truth.

Alternative Rock music review Perfect
Manic Street Preachers really reached perfection with this album. Sure the lyrics deal with unsavory topics, but they are handled in such an intelligent manner that the experience of listening is inspiring and uplifting; I cannot think of another album that compares with this. This is much deeper than Joy Division's Closer, which I hear this compared to often, in that the topics are dealt with head on in an uncensored manner. And this is not the "woe is me" self defeating style of Alice in Chains. The profanity isn't used just to be shocking; the lyrics to YES are filled with violent sexual imagery but they are in no way cheap. The musicianship and vocals are superb. I just love that wailing scream and guitar of DIE IN SUMMERTIME. Anorexia, self mutilation, the holocaust, prostitution, killers, dictators, capital punishment, racism, depression, and I can't help but feeling more alive after listening.

Alternative Rock music review Pretentious title - lives up to its bold claim
This is the Manics' signature album and one of the most underrated masterpieces in the wider pop music world.

The presumptuous title is more than backed up by the content.
The existential lyrics are just as powerful and evocative as the music itself.

Insightful, profound.

The pick of the bunch for me are - 'Yes', '4st 7lb', 'Mausoleum', 'Faster' and 'PCP' although all the songs are top notch.

The only Manics album that definitely contains no radio-friendly tunes yet their best.

"In these plagued streets of pity you can buy anything"

Alternative Rock music review Still Hurts
This is, hands down, one of the most infectious, brilliant, original, unique, passionate, and well-written things ever put to wax. I have currently been listening to this CD for months straight and find myself constantly humming it. I feel almost angry that more people do not know about this band! I am normally one to write carefully thought-out and calm reviews with lots of big words, instead of the rambling I'm doing right here, but I am just so utterly shocked by this band that I couldn't possibly describe how great this album is in regular English words. The voice, the lyrics, guitar, drums, bass, rhythms, song structures, production, everything gels perfectly.

"The Holy Bible" by the Manic Street Preachers has been called the British "In Utero", and there is definitely an element of truth to that. Both records have subject matter which could be called a number of things: dark, bleak, humorous, and disturbing, ranging from plagued streets, prostitutes and self-harm (Yes) memories of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Mausoleum) the holocaust (The Intense Humming of Evil) anorexia (4st 7lbs) philosophy (Faster) serial killers (Archives of Pain) and of course the self-explanatory "Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayitsworldwouldfallapart". James Dean Bradfield and Richey Edwards (R.I.P.) are two of the best songwriters I have heard in the past ten years of my life, and I'm not kidding. But even if you don't care for the very clever and (VERY) dark lyrics, even as a pure sonic experience "The Holy Bible" delivers. I love the guy's voice, although I found his accent impenetrable at first, once you read the lyrics you can get used to his voice and you can understand him.

Alternative Rock music reivew The Living End is such a wonderful band.
This is an excellent album. I have listened and own all their albums and i have to say this is pretty much there best. I like this album and roll on alot. This album i think is a little better though. There is just something about this band that distingushes them differently from every other punk or rock band. They have a certain style or flair to them. Maybe its that they decided to use an upright bass instead of bass guitar. I dunno. But this is a great album and great band. Get this album if your a fan of rockabilly, punk, or if you would just like to hear a great guitarist by the name of Chris Cheney. Just get this cd. Its awesome. i will tell about the best songs on the cd.

Prisoner of Society- always a classic. first heard this a couple years ago and fell in love with it. very catchy and a great guitar. very rebellious lyrics. i like that

Growing Up- awesome song, upbeat guitar, danceable

Monday- one of my favorite songs on the cd. awesome guitar, great lyrics, very catchy, and has a certain happiness to it, i like it.

Save the Day- wonderful.

Trapped- unexpected ska song on the cd. its great though. a little slow at first then leads into some upbeat ska punk,

Fly Away- awesome guitar, very catchy, and in the middle of the song it has an amazing guitar solo from chris, very catchy and rockabilly-like

Strange- good lyrics, good everything

well this is the conclusion of my review, its cool if you took time to read it, well, ok, this is an awesome cd. BUY IT!

Alternative Rock music reivew the real pop-punk sound
Catchy pop-punk hooks, booming ska rythyms, and furious rockabilly swagger is what we get treated to with The Living End's self-titled cd. Elements of Green Day, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Stray Cats with a little dash of Shadowy Men on a Shadow Planet make this record an absolutely brilliant listening experience. This is one of those albums that shine completely throughout without any urge to press the skip button, as every song has a different groove than the last, and all just plain kick ass. Guitarist/Lead Singer Chris Cheney has a voice that is very reminiscent of Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, and has guitar licks that recall Reverend Horton Heat and Duane Eddy. The band is a three piece power trio who deliver the same kind of punch as Green Day as well with their pop-punk sound, but have a knack of spontaneously jumping into Fishbone-like ska interludes and surf-rockabilly guitar wind-outs. For an alternative to the likes of Good Charlotte and Simple Plan check these guys out right now as this is what pop-punk should sound like.

Alternative Rock music review A Desert Island Album
Yes, folks. This is one of those "10 Essential Albums" that you want to take with you when you are stranded for years on a desert island. Just about every song here is crisp, clean, fresh, catchy, driving, and just plain musical. The vocals are great, the musicianship is excellent, the material is superb. How can a punk band sound so polished? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but from the first song, I've been a believer.

If you look back at the early days of rock's British Invasion, you'll find just about the last example of "power rock" that The Living End brings back to life. The songs are catchy, but with an edge. The playing isn't perfect, but the raw edges make it more authentic. There are no self-satisfying endless drum or guitar solos. Nothing gets in the way of the song. In short, this is what the world has been waiting for ever since the early days of the Rolling Stones.

Buy it. Listen to it. Love it.

Alternative Rock music review The BEST album ever
Let me just say this.
I highly doubt that there will ever be any album that will top this masterpiece called "Grassroots"
Not even 311 themselves will ever top this album.
311's other albums like "Music","311","Soundsystem" have no filler songs either.
But the big difference is that each of song on Grassroots are absolutely awesome.
I especially enjoy "8:16 AM", "Lose", and "Nutsymtom".
Well..I guess if you're human, you like music
so I recommend this album to those who like music.
No need to thank me.

Alternative Rock music review amazing album
This album is tied as my favorite 311 album with Transistor. It's truly rare when a band releases a sophomore cd that's just as good (if not better) than their previous attempt. When I got this album, I listened to it every day for months on end. Nick and SA's singing and rapping, Tim's guitar work, PNuts bass playing wizardry, and Chad's metronome drumming never ceased to impress me. Years later, this album is still heavily rotated in my daily mix of music. I truly believe this is one of the best rock albums ever made, by anyone, period. If you don't already have this album, you need it in your collection.

Few women have expanded the vocabulary of rock as bewitchingly as Kate Bush; among male stars, only Prince may have taken as many risks. Hounds of Love saw Bush reining in the kookier aspects of The Dreaming, channelling them into epic electro-pop that tackled big issues of life and death and God with gripping drama and intensity. "Running Up That Hill" was one of the great singles of the '80s; "Cloudbusting" was string-driven, magically pretty; "Jig of Life" showed that Bush is one of the few pop artists who can flirt with Celtic mysticism without sounding twee or trite. Forget the riot grrrls: Bush is the real thing. --Barney Hoskyns

Alternative Rock music reivew Love for Hounds of Love
Kate Bush's colorful career is a long and exciting road, with its share of bumps and twists along the way. Her albums are maddeningly uneven and she can casually throw a masterpiece after a 4-minute exhibition of pretense. "Hounds of Love' is one of the best moments of that career so far, but it is definetely a characteristic moment as well, including its good and bad.
The album is separated in two cycles: Tracks 1-5 ("Hounds of Love") are mainstream pop/rock material, without any particular connection, whereas Tracks 6-12 are a concept album entitled "The Ninth Wave".
The first part includes songs that sound accomplished, but, sadly cold. One cannot deny that they are intricate, beautifully constructed and excellent songs, but hardly any of them arouses any kind of emotion. The production sounds terribly dated, all these years later and even though the songs are decent, Bush's vocal sometimes spoils the effect those songs would have had, had she chosen to go for meaning instead of exaggeration and diva attitude. The sole exception is "The Big Sky" where Bush gets an amazing kick out of being a dreamer. The poetry is thankfully an exception. Most of the songs have soulful, deep and brave lyrics that challenge listeners instead of serving meanings on a plate.
However, it is the second part that blows listeners' minds away. It is easily one of the most powerful and courageous albums of any time. 'The Ninth Wave" retells the story of a woman trapped -literally or metaphorically- under ice, trying to make her way to the surface. It is an ode to life, it is an ode to believing in the values, in the moments, in the joy, in the gifts offered to us by life. Experimentating with Celtic tunes, choirs, everyday dialogue, drama and difficult subject matter, Kate Bush pulls it off with elegance, grace and emotion.
She goes from terrifying, historic flashbacks like "Waking the Witch", to the astonishing determination of "Hello Earth" without missing a beat. I feel the need to praise in particular "Jig of Life", a visionary song on survival.
Conceptually, verbally, sonically, "The Ninth Wave" deserves no less than 5 stars. (and I do not use that rating lightly).
Simply said, Kate Bush demonstrates more than anything that when her heart is involved in a project and her mind is free, she can pretty much work musical miracles.

Alternative Rock music review The greatest album ever recorded.
I saw Kate Bush in a dream last night, for only the second time (the first was before the release of _The Sensual World_). This is why I am here now.

I first heard Kate Bush on the radio while on the graveyard shift at work, in 1985. I was intrigued by the unusual sound of the music, and for a wonder, the DJ actually gave the name of the song, the album, and the artist -- it was Kate Bush singing "Running Up that Hill" on _Hounds of Love_. I went and bought the album, and though it didn't hugely impress me at first, it grew on me. The music on this album has a cryptic mysterious quality that one finds only in the greatest of art.

All of Kate's albums are at least very good, but this one is the best, and is my all-time favorite (see review title). There is a remastered edition of this CD with bonus tracks, but the original edition maintains an artistic unity which in my opinion is vitiated by the extra material. You would do well to buy either.

Alternative Rock music review Ravishing.
AMAZING album. Everything about it is perfect. The songs, the imagery, the execution. On a song like the title track "Hounds of Love", you can really hear and feel Kate's ambition. Beautiful.

Alternative Rock music reivew Snot - 'Get Some' (Geffen)
Snot has put out, what I assume a title that some patrons might tag as a hardcore CD with 'Get Some'.Upside of this release is that it was produced by none other than T-Ray(Helmet,House Of Pain).Overall, this fifteen track effort is pretty generic.Tunes that were okay include "Joy Ride","Snooze Button","Deadfall"(possibly the best song of the entire disc)and "Mr.Brett".Simply didn't do much for me.

Alternative Rock music review Tribute
This guy deserved it for real... he isn't or I should say he wasn't an icon at the time, but he influenced so many lives. Helped in so much music. Tragedy doesn't explain it. I have bought this album six times now because I end up giving it to someone who hasn't heard them. I would also do it 10 more times... The reviews will be sad, but the music isn't. It is just great Rock!

Alternative Rock music review If Only They Had Lived...
You want power...nuts...and emotional f***ing guts?!?!? The lead singer (RIP) delivers enough raw, peeled-back nakedness to make those "wannabe" rockers (Limp Bizkit, Machine Head, etc) pale in comparison. This CD rocks! Whatever your political persuasion, you cannot deny the passion that screams from this classic. I agree with other reviewers...had the members survived, SNOT would have easily surpassed KORN & the likes as THE MOST POWERFULL ROCKERS today. Buy this CD! I guarantee you will not be disappointed!
