Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew You HAVE to hear The Legendary Stardust Cowboy.
A mate of mine leant me this on vinyl about 15 years ago, then I lost my copy a few years back, but I dreamt about it last night, and am *so* happy it's available on CD. There are two genuinely astonishing tunes on this collection - a completely mental "Papa-oom-mow-mow" shambles from the Trashmen, but best of all the way-beyond-mental-and-past-even-totally-deranged Legendary Stardust Cowboy who just shrieks...over his own...guitar playing. Magnificent, frankly. Worth it for those two tracks alone - the rest is OK psychobilly.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review This Album Changed My Life!
This is quite simply the Greatest compilation album ever loosly slapped together with some masking tape and thumbtacks. Forget music trends! This is the REAL RAW sound of some of the wildest rock n' roll tunes ever scraped up off the recording studio floor. The primordial unhinged oozing and throbbing of a complete cerebral meltdown. Michael Bolton wouldn't have a clue!

Alternative Rock Compilations music review One of the Best CDs I Own
I bought this CD several years ago, and it has lived in my CD player all this time. This CD is a collection of original songs that were later covered by The Cramps. If you are a fan of them, then this CD is a must have.

Even if you're not familiar with The Cramps, this CD is worth the price just for the song by Hazil Adkins alone.

All-in-All a very excellent CD.

  • I Know I've Been Changed - John Hammond (with Tom Waits)
  • Happy Earthday - Captain Beefheart
A benefit CD for Earthjustice, Where We Live touts "the Universal Right to Clean Air & Clean Water." Sixteen tracks in various rootsy styles wind a thread through nature imagery ("Like a tree planted by the water, I shall not be moved," sings Pops Staples; Bob Dylan is represented by his great, forgotten 1971 single "Watching the River Flow") and a more general theme of peace and social justice (Willie Nelson’s "Living in the Promiseland," the Neville Brothers’ "Sister Rosa"). Veteran singer-activists Sweet Honey in the Rock link the two with "More Than a Paycheck," a song about the perils of pollution and simply trying to keep food on the table. Cannily promoting a theme of Christian spirituality (the Staples and Nevilles tracks, along with those by Maria Muldaur and Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner and Robert Cray, and John Hammond and Tom Waits) as a corollary to environmental support, the album also seeks to pull the sense of righteousness away from corporate and right-wing political interests. --Rickey Wright

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Rare cuts, nice mix
I got a review copy for a newsletter I do. Wow. I usually don't go for compilations - but the mix here is really nice. (Beware the surprise track by Captain Beefheart at the end designed to wake you up.)

Need a groovy dinner disc? This is it. And for a good cause it seems.

Played this one for the girlfriend and she asked me to play it again. A rarity around my house.

Pick it up.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Great diverse mix-soulful, groovy, upbeat & surprise ending!
Yeah, the Capt. Beefheart bit at the end is jarring but hilarious. According to the track notes (and you can read all about this cd & listen to some of the tracks at www.wherewelive.org) the Capt. sung it over the phone to the album's compiler and you can hear them laughing at the end! It's his first "recording" in years...

I think all of the tracks are considered hard-to-find if not impossible. This freshness makes all the tracks worthy, even if you know the artist inside out (like me & Willie Nelson). Some we're all just hungry for more of, like Norah Jones. Definately in the soulful & groovy category, nothing hard or pulsing. Good all-round anytime music.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Great Gift Idea for the Holidays
1. I hate shopping, especially during the holidays.
2. One year I tried avoiding shopping by making a donation to a charitable organization in the name of family/friends, didn't go over too well. Nice thought...but let's face it, everyone likes opening presents.

This CD solves both my problems. Most compilation CD's usually have a few good songs, this one has a ton. A great variety of artists and styles, really has something for everyone.

My holiday shopping is going to be alot easier this year, and I'll be giving gifts to help a great cause.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Toe-tapping tunes for adults and kids
This CD is filled with great music of all different styles: rock, jazz, zydeco, bossa nova, country/folk-ish, and all songs are played by talented, popular artists. Our daughter has never really listened to kids' music, so we inwardly groaned when we received this as a gift, but it's not your usual raffi, i'm a little teacup fare. This CD reaches out to kids and doesn't talk down to them. My three year old loves it, and I suspect that older kids (5-6-7) would get into it as well.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Great Choice!
I am so glad that I purchased this CD for my daughter. She loves to hear these songs over and over. We (the adults) haven't tired of hearing them yet, either. Fantastic compilation.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review For moms and dads too!
This CD is so fun! It is the first kid CD that I don't run to turn off as soon as I'm in the car without my 3 year old. He loves it and sings along with every song. It has some of our favorite artists singing some classic songs from Sesame Street, Muppets, etc. Barenaked Ladies singing Ernie and Bert's La la la la lemon song is not to be missed!

Alternative Rock Compilations music review A Real Treat!

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Progression; Great Tracks, Great Production
Some compilaitons just have great epic tracks. These are the ones heard on the dance floors all over the world. Ministry of Sound and Cream often fall into this category. Some tracks don't have those well known tracks but are mixed very well and set a specific mood. Even though some of the tracks are more obscure, they are often chosen well. Following up from releases mixed by Dave Seaman (Awakening) and Deep Dish, Renaissance has continued its great history of compilations with Progression. It has epic numbers like Rui de Silva's "Touch Me" and Laurent Garnier's "Man with the Red Face." But the mixing is superb as well. The first disk has a more House flavor to it while the second is a little darker. Track selection on both truly represents the new trend of Progressive House/Trance. Some old faves like "Not Over Yet" and "Cafe del Mar" are also included as a surprise. In all, Progression is essential to anyone's collection. Since the first Sasha and Digweed compilation, Renaissance has given us great tracks combined with great production.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Progression in Progressive House/Trance
Renaissance released its first compilation by Sasha and Digweed and that was what all compilations to date have tried to measure up to. With successful recent releases by Dave Seaman (Awakening) and Deep Dish, Renaissance has had a lot to live up to, but Progression does not dissappoint. A compilation these days often fall into two categories. Those like the Ministry of Sound and Cream release focus on the big tracks heard on dance floors all over the world. These types of compilations don't have much to the production or mixing aspects of music. Other compilaitons like past Sasha and Digweed compilations, as well as the Nu Breed line from Global Underground, do not have those epic tracks but do make up for it in the mixing and track selection . Progression has both. It has the big tracks like Delirium's "Silence" and Rui de Silva's "Touch Me," but you can also appreciate the technical aspects of the music because of the quality of track selection, production, and mixing. In all, Progession is a must buy. Great tracks, great mixing, and it also has some old faves like "Not Over Yet" and "Cafe del Mar."

Alternative Rock Compilations music review The Best of The Best of Mountain Stage Live
This is my favorite of The Best of Mountain Stage Live. Moonshiner has never been performed better nor has Mr. Jones or American Music. The vocals on Pale Sun are legendary. I also enjoyed Magic Fingers which captivates the listener. The versions of Good Things and Being Simple are classic as well. I first heard this cd when I was a freshman in college back in 1995 and it remains in my top 5 of all time.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review That's about as funky as you can be....
Counting Crows Live at Mountain Stage is one of the best recordings of Mr. Jones I've ever heard, and I've heard alot. That's all Iv'e got to say about that.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review This is not your father's compilation album...
For those of us who tend to associate the words "compilation album" with gas-station-giveaways and magazine-freebies, "Big Fish, Little Fish" is more than just a pleasant surprise - it's a stereotype-shatterer.

This album is a collection of 16 choice tunes from the best female artists on the Chicago music scene today. I only get 1000 words to write this review, and that is just not enough for me to give each artist the attention that she deserves. The simple truth is that each song on this album is excellent, with flavors ranging from jazz to folk, pop to disco, big brass band to solo guitar. Truly, something to suit every taste.

I'd write more, LOTS more, but it's all to the same tune: buy this album. You'll like it. I don't know how to say it more clearly than that.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review It's Like a Chicago Lilith Fair
Best of Chicago's female artists. Surprisingly I found this collection very entertaining.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review best compilation EVER
i sought out this cd solely for the weezer track, you wont get with me tonight. i had no idea who else was on the cd other than mudhoney. when my copy of this cd came, and i went home to listen to it, i was in heaven. the iggy pop tracks are cool. the mudhoney song, hardon for war, is amazing. the pleasure forever tune, ing cobra in the guts of vallhalla, is also amazing. the dead meadow tune, lets jump in, is a 5 minute long metal-trip. its too great for words. all the rest of the tunes are also great. u need to have an open mind to like every song on this cd, but even if u dont, youll like at least 15 out of these 21 tracks, and thats more than a regular cd. like i said i bought this cd for the weezer track, cuz im an obsessive weezer fan. i waited 4 months for that song alone, and when i listened to it, it was amazing. its the best weezer song ive heard in a while. like i said im a huge weezer fan, to me, everything they do is amazing, but this track is too great for words. this cd is too brilliant to be this unknown. BUY THIS CD, you will not be disspointed

Alternative Rock Compilations music review A masterpiece of Ambient Electronica
One of the best CD's for anyone to own. If you are new to ambient music, this is a great gateway. If you are well versed, this cd will find a good home in your collection and regular rotation in your CD player (or iPod). I first encounterd this CD four years ago. Since then I have sampled an array of ambient/electronical music, yet I still find myself listening to this CD regularly, enjoying every song, and thinking of the memories that I have made. Perfect for just lounging, love making, driving, relaxing, and being hungover, everytrack is golden and well fitted. With it's cool sounds, soft vocals, downtempo beat, and various rhythms its a wonder that there are only four reviews of this album. Check out: Escape, Count on You, signs of love, slipinside, home and dry, if you could see my eyes (probably my favorite), all this love, shine, 16 again.
