This soundtrack serves as both a companion to Kenneth Lonergan's film and an introduction to the E-Squared Records roster. As such, it's a perfect primer for the imprint's uninitiated, but as it offers only previously released material, it's simply redundant for E-Squared devotees. The label, founded and run by roots-rock icon Steve Earle and his partner Ray Kennedy, uses the soundtrack to showcase the freshest horses in its stable. Earle himself is the prize thoroughbred, and the soundtrack is anchored by five cuts from The Mountain, his 1999 bluegrass foray with the Del McCoury Band. Two of these--the album-opening "Texas Eagle" and the Iris DeMent duet "I'm Still in Love with You"--are particular highlights. But the real winners are the dark horses: Bap Kennedy's reverb-soaked folk-rocker "Vampire," Cheri Knight's barroom-ready "White Lies," a diverse trio of songs from the now-defunct V-Roys, and especially Marah's raggedly infectious "Far Away You," drawn from that band's near-masterpiece 2000 album Kids in Philly. --Anders Smith-Lindall

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew I wish, I wish
The cellist who played the Bach in the movie, is Roman Borys, a top Canadian cellist. His interpretation of the 1st Suite is so gentle and melancholy that I rated this recording down because it isn't included on the CD. What a shame!

Alternative Rock Compilations music review excellent soundtack for an amazing movie
the music to this movie is a perfect fit...but i'm not sure which song is playing when Terry and Rudy play the pool games for money, its got that amazing sound that reaches the pitch at the end of the scene...somebody help me out!

Alternative Rock Compilations music review What about this peice ? some one must know !!!!
I'm trying to track down the peice that play's just after Sammy cuts her leg. It plays over a montage of scene's which starts with Sammy getting ready for bed, Terry smoking out of a window while its raining, and Bryan coming into work to find his desktop computer has been 'altered'. anyone got any ideas ?

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew First volume with some longer exclusive mixes...
Where as volume 1& 2 had way too many short versions, this volume starts to get it right, giving us longer mixes of tracks that are rarely found on CD, like Mr. Lonely, Yet Another Day, and I'm Waiting. For serious collectors of dance music, this makes this volume much more than just a "party" mix. CD1 is a blast of hot peak hour diva vocal tracks, and ends with instrumental "E" by Drunkenmunky, which is actually the riff from one of Eminem's hits. Disc 2 is a mix of vocal, trance, and tribal beats, and tends to slow down the pace a bit. more longer, hard-to-find tracks would have put this volume over the top. Track times:

CD1
1. At the end (5:32)
2. Burn for you (4:26)
3. Boys of summer (7:52)
4. Look at me now (4:21)
5. Mr lonely (7:05)
6. Don't say goodbye (6:25)
7. You're gonna miss me (8:17)
8. Sound of violence (5:10)
9. In this world (6:44)
10. Loneliness (6:19)
11. Diving (3:29)
12. I should know (4:26)
13. E (3:17)

CD2
1. Yet another day (6:49)
2. The way (2:51)
3. Caf del mar (5:14)
4. Head (4:03)
5. Dark beat (7:44)
6. Sweat (5:02)
7. What god has given you (6:04)
8. Inside (6:10)
9. Love in Bombay (4:32)
10. I'm waiting (8:44)
11. Sweet dreams (5:16)

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew better than 1 and 2
i think the first CD is considerably better than the 2nd
many of the songs have a good backbeat with excellent female vocals perfect on the dance floor
the best songs on the CD are:
At the End (classic Iio with great vocals and backbeat)
Diving (4 Strings in my opinion is always able to pull out a good song - Diving is one of my favorites)
I Should Know (Despite the male vocalist, it was still a fairly good song, as it jut gives you an overall good feeling)

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Very good, well-rounded album
This CD totally rocks. While the second disk focuses mostly on beat, the first is all about strong vocals, and no one can match the talent of Deborah Cox in the Hex Hector/Mac Quayle mix of "Mr. Lonely", or the power of the chorus in Katrina Ruiz's "You're Gonna Miss Me". Several songs exhibit periods with excellent synth lines, like in Tomcraft's "Loneliness", and the trancelike rhythms of DJ Sammy's take on "The Boys Of Summer" will get your blood pumping. Drunkenmunky's "E" has its own charm and unlikely instruments. The second disk wasn't quite as entertaining or danceable, but it wasn't mediocre enough to hurt this album. My suggestion: Buy. Now.

Of all the ways that musicians across the globe have responded to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the legacy that will likely survive is the dozens of benefit compilation recordings. Released on the one-year anniversary of September 11, Let's Roll is surely among the most interesting of these. The proceeds from the disc benefit the Todd M. Beamer Foundation, established to help the children affected by these events. Performers range from the finest artists in the mainstream contemporary Christian music community, plus a few well-placed celebs, such as Wynonna and Yo-Yo Ma, who neither sound out of place or here just for show. Many of the artists, including 38th Parallel, dcTalk, and James Curlin, appeal to the power of bombastic, anthemic music to channel their patriotic and faith-filled messages. But the most successful songs here employ restraint, subtlety, and grace, as on the beautiful fingerpicked guitar stylings of Nick Moroch and Don Potter. The disc's shining moments arrive in the form of uplifting and gorgeous lullaby ballads from Jennifer Knapp, Nicole C. Mullen, and an absolutely golden-throated Ms. Chaka Khan. --Mike McGonigal

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew pretty good
This cd isn't great...but pretty good. For me, a big dc Talk fan, it was worth the money for me to purchase this cd just for the first 4 songs. I listened to the title track so many times that the purchase was probably worthwhile just for the one song! I really like Let's Roll. The cd after the first few songs, though, I'm not crazy about.

Tracks 6, 13, 15, and 18 don't even have words--just soft music. 14 and 16 are both the Lord's Prayer, just to different music, both soft styles. The first 5 and numbers 7, 8, and 10-11 (which is really just one song) are basically the only "contemporary" Christian music with words. 9 is a country song.

Good lyrics, but most of the cd is not as upbeat as I would like. 3 1/2 stars.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Will soothe your soul
Nothing bad can legitimately be said about this album. It was designed as a source of comfort for anyone suffering following 9/11. Done exclusively as a tribute to those on Flight 93, with no financial gain in mind, as the man who put the album together, was a close, personal friend of Todd Beamer, who made the phrase "Let's Roll" famous. They golfed together, and participated in a Bible Study together, and he knew Todd well enough, to include Wynona on the album, as she was one of Todd's favorite artists. Many of Wynona's fans probably don't even realize what a special song she performed that is on this album. Todd loved Country music, which is why some of the songs have a Country feel. "The Lord's Prayer" is emphasized, both because it was an example for us of how to pray, and it's the very prayer one of the other passengers prayed with a telephone operator as she sought to comfort him. Eclectic in nature, the album begins full of power, and excitement, to convey the emotions of the passengers taking back their plane, with the cry, "Let's Roll". As the album progresses, it becomes more, and more worshipful, conveying an attitude of becoming right with one's creator, as many on the plane must have been experiencing, along with purveying comfort to those whose loved ones were lost. Musically excellent, it makes a great album to acquire an attitude of worship for Sunday mornings, deserves a place in every Christian's library, and didn't receive the acclaim it deserved.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Outstanding musically and goes to a good cause
This cd is a must have for anyone that loves contemporary Christian music and/or wants money made from their purchase to go to a good cause.

Musically the stand out track in my opinion is the opening one by dc Talk. The members of dc Talk have gotten together extremely rarely the past few years since splitting to do work on solo projects (hopefully not split for good) so anything new from them together as a band is highly anticipated. Their title track "Let's Roll" is unbelievable and better than anything off of their Supernatural cd.

All the tracks on this cd are good in their own right and overall this cd is easily 5 stars. Buy this one with good conscience and enjoy the music which, sadly, Todd Beamer can no longer do.

This collection begs the question: Do the means justify the end? Even the title, As Seen on TV, is so crass one might expect a free set of Ginsu knives to be thrown in with the disc. But the trend set by those savvy TV advertising execs of pushing products from cars to clothes to cruises through hipster songs has resulted in an undeniably quality, albeit disparate, compilation. From the devastatingly simple "Pink Moon," sullenly crooned by the late Nick Drake, to the new wave-punk classic Buzzcocks tune "What Do I Get" to Sarah Vaughan's sassy "What Lola Wants," the 20 tracks here capture a snapshot of 21st-century, post-adolescent life as it is portrayed--you guessed it--through TV. The resulting cultural implications are probably too disturbing to explore (that we are a society where our musical touchstones are fabricated by commercialism), but if you can ignore the source, this compilation has plenty that will speak to the soul and get the body grooving. --Beth Massa

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew die capitalist scum sell-outs
Songs that carry emotional information and some transport us back to a poignant time, place, or event in our lives. Its no wonder a corporation would want to hitch aride on the spell these songs cast and encourage you to buy soft drinks, underwear, or automobiles while you
re in the trance. Artists who take mone for ads poison and pervert their songs. it reduces them to the level of a jingle, a word that describes the sound of money in your pocket, which is what your songs become. Remember, when you sell your songs for commercials you are selling your audience as well. When I was a kid, if I saw an artist I admired doing a commerical, Id think, Too bad, he must really need the money. But now its so pervasive. Its a virus. Artists are lining up to do ads ... corporations are hoping to hijack a cultures memories for their product. Tom Waits

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew A latent effect of another quirky quest
Had it not been for a Volkswagon commercial, I probably wouldn't have discovered this perky little CD. I was actually on a quest to findout who preformed the song on a Volkswagon commercial with a guy going through the same motions over and over in his office, which turned out to be "Mr. Blue Sky" by ELO. Having found this in the soundtrack bins at the local record store while looking for said song, I decided to pick this one up because it sounded quirky.

It's not bad, mostly techno and feel good pop songs ("Into Your Arms" by The Lemonheads). There is a wonderful song that I didn't know existed and because of both the Volkswagon commercial and subsequently became a posthumous hit, "Pink Moon". People were bent out of shape that Iggy Pop and others sold out their songs to be used in commercials. But hey, let them. Only a precious few achieve enough success that they can live on something creative. If they really cared only about art and not about being famous for something then they would decline.

It's lite and airy, have a good time with it.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew all over the map but some key tunes
A great collection of songs you will recall from US TV commercials, but kind of hard to just put on an listen to all the way through. The album starts off with folkier material, go to harder, beat driven tracks and ends up in alt-rock land. And then we get Styx (!). Still pretty good way to get a bunch of great songs you' wouldn't buy otherwise.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew ok, but could have been better"
this tribute album is ok, there is some good tunes on here, but nothing as good as it need'ed to be after all waylon is the king of the outlaws' its a' should've could've kinda thing if you know what i mean? but i really do like travis tritt's version of lonesome onry and mean. he is alot like waylon was. the outlaw son of waylon so to speak. and then there is other great songs on here too. but that one stands out in my mind. yes the other tribute album is much better. man its time another one comes out, but hopefuly this time they will all do the songs they want to. a waylon fan.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Great!
I've Always Been Crazy is really a great tribute to Waylon Jennings. one of the best CW singers ever.

It is worth it just to hear 'Lonesome, On'ry and Mean' by the legendary Travis Tritt.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Good stuff!
Overall, it's a great album. Some of the songs are done much the way they were by Waylon himself, and some have a very modern spin put on them. I appreciated the artist's interpretations and especially loved Kenny Chesney/Kid Rock's version of "Luckenbach, Texas" and the girls singling "mamas". A few of the songs don't even sound like the orig. and definitely don't sound country...so if that bugs you, you may not want to buy this album.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Too Much Rap
This CD is one of the worst compilations of new pop music on the market today. I received it as a gift from a friend who has no taste in music.

Sonique's "It feels so good" will send you sailing with her warm, sexy voice, but that's about it. Other songs, like "Bling Bling" were not real radio sensations and seem out of place with this collection. Overall, this album is a manufactured piece of garbage.

If you want to make rich idiots even richer, then buy this sorry album.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew An OK CD...
If you're looking for hits from 2000, these CD is about half-filled with them. Nelly's "Country Grammar," Effiel 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)," and Three Doors Down's "Kryptonite" are all definitely worthy of being called "Smash Hits." However, at least half of this CD contains songs that were NOT smach hits - heck, they weren't even MODEST hits!
I advise you look over the track listing and decide if enough hits are included. Otherwise, look to hits packages such as "Totally Hits 2001" and the "Now!" series.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Just OK.
OK, some of the tracks on this CD are pretty good. But others, I can do without. The best tracks are numbers 1, 2, 4, 8, 10, 12, 13, 17, and especially, 18. The rest aren't that great and ones you can skip over. This complication CD is mostly R&B, Rap, and Rock hits. So if you're looking for Pop or Latin hits, then this is NOT the CD to get (get CDs from the NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC! series, instead). But if you like this kind of music, than this is definitely the CD to get. But pretty decent for a CD complication.

Jeff deserved way better than this.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew "Eldorado" shimmers, but the rest is weak.
"Eldorado" as done by Fleming and John (who?) is amazing and wonderful....the singer just absolutely makes the song her own.

The rest of the album is pretty marginal....every song other than the aforementioned "Eldorado" suffers from either amateurish performance or miles-off-the-mark reinterpretation (i.e, Todd Rundgren's drum-and-bass "Bluebird is Dead": I know the idea seems cool, but- trust me, you *don't* want to pay to hear it.)

Oh well.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Very good overall
If you really like Jeff Lynne's music, you will find something to love about this set. As mentioned by others, some of the covers are pretty straight-forward (10538 Overture, Telephone Line, among others) while many are further afield. Some are pretty way-out there, in particular Mr. Blue Sky by Tony Visconti, whose version nearly screams, "I warned you when you asked me to do this tune." But really it's all in fun I think, and most of the cuts improve with every spin.

Personal favorites include Boy Blue, One Summer Dream, Eldorado, Steppin' Out, Don't Bring Me Down, Showdown, Do Ya, and Above the Clouds. Going further about this is futile, it's all a question of taste. But I enjoyed the fresh vocals, simpler arrangements, the sometimes rough edges or techno-styled flourishes, etc.

Give this a try. Of the 2 CDs you'll find at least one whole disc of stuff you'll be glad to own.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Could have been better!
Being at Bonnaroo 2003 was nothing sort of awsome! Best festival of the year! It is too bad this 2 cd set doesnt do the festival justice. It seems like they only picked artists that would help them sell the cd better to people who werent there. Artist like James Brown, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz and Ben Harper are very weak compared to some they skiped such as Moe., Neil Young, North Mississippi Allstars, Spearhead, and The Wailers. Also A lot of the songs they picked are not the best from each artists shows, like The Dead's Sugar Magnolia and Widespread Panic's Papa Johnny Road. my advice is dont buy this cd you will not be happy with it, if you are into jamband music your better off trading for live shows from the weekend.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew A worthy DVD
Let's just say that 200 DVD's aren't enough to even come close to capturing all of the great music and fun that happened at Bonnaroo. I can understand people's complaints about not seeing at least a little bit of every act, much less Neil Young and STS9. I did not see the 2002 DVD, but am pleased with the overall quality of this feature - the footage and audio is great. Everyone who was there will be looking for themselves somewhere in the crowd. Even though it was Disneyed up a bit excessively with cutsey kid shots and quick-cut editing, it justifies its existence by (mostly) accurately portraying to the general public why Bonnaroo is so popular.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Great CD from a Great Festival
The coolest thing about Bonnaroo is the amazingly diverse and eclectic music lineup they offer each year. With 2003 being the 2nd Bonnaroo I have been too, I was quite impressed with the lineup and I was even more impressed with the awesome sets of music I was lucky enough to catch. As with any festival, you have to pick and choose which sets of music you can see (because acts are scheduled at the same time), but with this CD, everyone has a chance to see highlights from the festival. It's a 2 CD set, so both cds are packed with music that showcase the talent and intensity of the performances at Bonnaroo. You got Widespread Panic, Allman Brothers Band, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, My Morning Jacket, Galactic, Flaming Lips, Warren Haynes, Ben Kweller, just to name a few. I bought this cd for friends of mine who couldnt go to the festival cuz of work, and they loved it. I went to the damn festival and I adore it. Defintily a great purchase. Highly recommended

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew I'll say goodbye to taste
Thankfully I was able to check this thing out of the library to try out, so at least I'm not an angry, ripped-off fan...just angry. The artists used and their rendition of these classics are as inappropriate as a hypothetical Liberace interpretation of Aerosmith, or perhaps a Manilow take on Black Sabbath.

Don't buy a tin-plated nineties sendup of seventies gold.

Hmm...used copies starting at 44 cents? Not a bad deal for a mini-Frisbee, I guess. Fetch, Rover!

(Carpenterphiles, take the negative votes I'm getting as a warning...they are being made by Generation X-ers who grew up with MTV. Beware!!)

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Wrong Superstar
This really should have included Bonnie Bramlett's (also the songs co-writer) soulful recording of Superstar instead of whatever that is on there. The Sonic Youth version sounds like Darth Vader on helium. The standouts here are: Shonen Knife Top of the World, Babes in Toyland Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft (a perfect song for Kat), The Cranberries - (They Long to Be) Close to You, 4 Non Blondes Bless the Beasts and Children, Sheryl Crow - Solitaire, Bettie Serveert - For All We Know. If you like any number of those artists this is worth buying.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Take It At Face Value And Enjoy
I just don't get the polarized reviews regarding this pleasant little tribute album. The haters are either neurotic Carpenters-worshipers who seem to have insider info on the "cynical" nature of this compilation made by some talented artists of the mid-90s, or they are simply haters of the Carpenters as a concept. Look people, this album has some great music on it. The interpretations are respectful and are not pure rip-off copies of the originals, which would have been foolish. No one sounds like Karen Carpenter. What they are is worthy interpretations that show off the talents of the artists while keeping the melodic pop of the classic songs in question as their backbone. Japanese ladies Shonen Knife do a great indie power pop version of Top of the World, Sonic Youth's under water sounding Superstar is mesmerizing, Sheryl Crow and the Cranberries do sturdy renditions of Solitaire and Close To You, and all the other artists do credible jobs. This is simply a tuneful tribute album and a pleasant musical experience, for both Carpenters and non-Carpenters fans alike, for fans of classic pop melodies or 90s indie music.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew The nocturnes of Chopin
If you strongly dislike the music on this CD and prefer Chopin's nocturnes instead (or even Led Zeppelin), then read Russell David Harper's BALD. It's a good anodyne to purpose-driven mediocrity, and an example of a true search for meaning.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Love the book....CD was a bad choice.

I agree with most other reviews that a music CD, as used for a "marketing ploy" for a book, is a very bad decision. I would be curious to know where the money generated from the Purpose Driven Life trademark is going. I do believe it's safe to give Rick Warren the benefit of the doubt and believe he is using 100% of the money generated from "The Purpose Driven Life" name, which is trademarked, to fund distribution of the products and further the kingdom of God and expand the Church. I believe that it's quite alright that Christians such as Rick Warren capitalize personally off their books somewhat for their hard work and sacrifice, but when you see books accompanied by music CDs of the same name it sends the wrong message as to it's motivation. I do not know Rick Warren personally, but I do know for a fact that most Christian writers who pastor their own Churches (Josh McDowell, Max Lucado, etc) use all money generated from the sales of books and there accompanimenst to further the kingdom of God through their Churches. Rick Warren has done a fantastic job with The Purpose Driven Life Book, but I believe that a CD and other marketed products using the Purpose Driven Life trademark should have been avoided at all cost to prevent another "Prayer of Jabez" marketing scenerio, which I personally thought was disgraceful.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Critique in context
Buy this album. If you enjoy different kinds of modern worship music, buy this album. Other less-than-enthusiastic reviewers have neglected to point out that this music was performed during the Purpose Driven Life simulcast that thousands of churches participated in across the country when Rick Warren's book first appeared. Those performances were solid. Pay special attention to "My Soul In Your Hands" (powerful vocals) and "Reach One More for Jesus" (powerful message, especially if you've read the book and know where how the phrase relates to Rick Warren's father).
