Alternative Rock Compilations music review Well worth the money for a true fan
I love MMJ. They are one of the best and most underrated bands out there. This is a collection of their early stuff (95-97). Some of the recording quality is a little ruff but that is so easily overlooked when the songs are as amazing as they are. If you are a fan than you must buy this album, along with Vol. 2 of this collection.

It would take thousands of dollars (or as many hours in download time) to hoard the most coveted songs from the eighties' top secret power pop bands, garage combos and post-new wave throngs into one collection. Or you can let Rhino Records, which masterfully conspired with writer/musician Lenny Kaye late last century to inflate and repackage Kaye's original Nuggets compilation, do the legwork. These four discs, though chaotically sequenced, scour all sides of the ponds to capture the vitality and innovation of mostly 1980-'85, introducing (or reintroducing) to-be-influential bands like San Francisco's Flamin' Groovies, New York's Raybeats, England's Soft Boys, Australia's the Church and Sweden's Nomads. Where else can you find XTC spin-off Dukes of Stratosphear, the La's "There She Goes" and the Bangles a half-decade prior to their manic Monday, along with the Cramps, the Plimsouls, the db's and the Bevis Frond in a single shebang—and with Rhino's ample, informative, transcendent liner notes, to boot? --Scott Holter

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew It shouldn't even be called Children of Nuggets...
I bought this box set thinking it'd be as great as the first two and I was extremely disappointed... I would have preferred that Rhino just continued with the time period and genre that made up Nuggets 2... I've since sold Children of Nuggets on ebay just to get some of my money back... Don't even bother... Stay with Nuggets 2...

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Mahna-tonous, doot doo dee doo-doo!
How appropriate the set stops the canon in 1996 since those coming of age in the 1990s were concerned with not being able to live at the same standard as their parents. This does not measure up to the first Nuggets boxed set, mainly because a lot of this, isn't really all that garage-ish.

If you bought the Post-Punk Chronicles and DiY series, or the Left of the Dial boxed set Rhino put out, you have a fair amount of these songs. Licensing fees must be getting ridiculous as this is the third appearance of "Tell Me When It's Over" by the Dream Syndicate on a Rhino release, and others fare similarly bad in terms of repeat appearances. Too much British stuff here falls into the canon of college rock.

I really wanted to like this, and if you haven't been a big fan of this genre and the genres it sprang out of, you might find this boxed set useful, but I am, and I don't as I already have a lot of it and most of what I'm lacking, I don't want.

Signed,
epsteinsmutha

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Killer collection
Having bought the two previous box set releases it was a no-brainer to pick this up. A great collection of tunes on this set. I wish other labels would spend the extra time and bucks to put out quality box sets like Rhino records does.

We had a BBQ out on the deck with the neighbours the other night and I had all 3 box sets loaded in a mega changer (12 discs total) and put them on random...people bopped and grooved into the wee hours and they all said they loved the tunes.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Chillout is the vibe!!!!
Chillout 05 is a great introduction to the chill music....If you like this kind of music then check out this artist... [...]

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Just "okay."
I did not connect with Chillout 05 nearly as much as I did 02 and 03 (incidentally, I did not connect with 04 as much either). It was okay, but not as spectacular as I was hoping. I looked forward to it all year, and bought it the second it came out, but I have to say that I was a little disappointed in many of the tracks.

Alternative Rock Compilations music review Excellent CD in an Excellent series
This '05 addition is excellent! I recommend the entire series, expept for the original 2001 (the 2001 isn't that good). 2002, 2003, '04, and '05 are outstanding. If they can keep this up, I'll look forward to purchasing another CD ASAP!

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew not what i expected
A little quirky for an avid tool fan...can compare to the string quartet album but not as good. You cant portray the feeling and message of TooL through this type of music. Peace, TIM

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew A Great Perspective of a Great Band
I've heard the string quartet tribute to tool, and I've heard this tribute (along with the Tool versions) and in my opinion out of the two tribute cd's this one is the best. It's defiantly different, but it's incredibly beautiful and creative how they have combined exotic instruments and drums with classic string orchestra qualities. I personally don't like the version of schism but the other songs are incredibly well done. This cd will bring you on an emotional trip of Tools well written music. This is a must buy for both tool and non tool fans.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew What the....?
What happened? This used to be such a great series! Now, it's like they're just slapping it together without a second thought. Too bad they're getting lazy. There's some truly amazing chill floating around and it would be nice if they'd pay attention. My major peeve is that they've started repeating some songs, most notably the one by Sarah McLachlan. Why do they always have to include one of her remixes anyway? If they're going to do the "repeat thing" why not Starsailor, BT or Thievery Corporation? Anyhow, I'll forgive and forget(this time!) and hope that future compilations will be up to snuff.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew what is 'chillout' music ?
i didn't quite understand the differences between lounge and chillout when i bought this. after i bought it and had a listen, i realized it's not really my taste. but my rating this album is based on the flow of music on it. i did not quite understand how holden & thompson wound up on the list of songs, since they usually appear in more dance/trance geared releases. you have music that goes from slow (ex. the postal service) to fast (within the context of this cd), and various rhythms that shift from light to dark, i just could not relate it to what i think 'chillout' music is supposed to be. i guess my definition would be more like relaxed pop.

although i do like lounge music (which is a spinoff of the trance genere), such as 'a trip in lounge' and other downtempo releases, such as disc 3 of blank & jones' The Mix vol. 2, etc. but i think overall, this would be a good 'variety' album to have in case you want to unwind from mainstream artist albums/compilations.

if i were to pick an album to chill to, it would most likely be of lounge genere.

Alternative Rock Compilations music reivew Review from the Synthesis
For this CD, the name says it all. Chillout 06 is a compilation 14 down tempo, melodious original tracks and remixes by bands from various genres of music. To maintain this mellow vibe, the transitions between each track are smooth, keeping the listener immersed in each tasteful groove throughout the CD. Even though the tracks are solid from beginning to end, the Solarstone Afterhours mix of Sarah Mclachlan's "World On Fire," "Life's What You Make It" by Talk Talk, and The Postal Service's cover of the Phil Collins classic "Against All Odds," are stellar tracks that separate themselves from the rest. If you're looking for a collection of relaxing tunes, or a CD to make sweet, sweet love too, Chillout 06 fits the bill perfectly.
