Alternative Rock Compilations music reviews

I was waiting sooooo long for this to come out! I have almost every karaoke CD in history. This CD has the most awesome songs. Here's my reviews for the songs:
1.Since you been gone-7/10-A little bit annoying if played too many times,but good.
2.She will be loved-9/10-Almost the best song on the CD.
3.If I ain't got you-6/10-A little slow for me. I was so mad when they played it on the radio because it gets pretty boring after listening to it for the millionth time.
4.Let's get it started-10/10-The ultimate party anthem of this year. Great way to start a party. Get it.
5.Pieces of Me-7/10-I used to like her but when she sang on SNL, I didn't like her that much anymore.
6.Somebody told me-2/10-I hate this song. I loooove their new song Mr.Brighside better.
7.My happy ending-6.5/10-I liked it better when Avril first came out with Complicated. Her new songs are a bit dark or gothy-ish
8.Yeah-8/10-This song is played at almost every party. I was mad when they named this the #1 song of 2004.
9.Heaven-9/10-Not a bad song at all. This song has a good beat and the vocals are excellent.
10.Breakaway-7/10-Gets on my nerves when I've listened to it for a whole bunch of times.
11.Let me love you-8/10-Good song, but a wee bit overplayed.
12.Angels-5/10-My sister likes this song but I don't like it very much. Good vocals though.
13.Drop it like it's hot-10/10-THIS SONG IS THE COOLEST OF ALLLLL TIME.
14.Get right-3.9/10-Painful to listen to. It sounds like she's is bouncing up and down with the mic.
15.Over and Over- -50,000,000/10-Horrible song. More like Overplayed and Overplayed Again.
16.Leave(Get Out)-0.5/10-GRRRRR!!!! This song gets on my nerves.It's painful to even think about it.

Michael Franti's "We Don't Stop"

Faithless' "Mass Destruction", an apt ingenious re-visioning of just what is a weapon of mass destruction. (And the video is awesome, too.)

Lyrics Born feat. Lateef with perhaps the most beautiful hip-hop track I've every heard

Paris, in an intro to "What Would You Do" that may knock the cobwebs off the musty assumptions in your mind, re-arranging and editing Dubya's language to reveal the subtext, followed up with a meaty rap accompanied by a heart-tugging chorus.

Le Tigre's "New Kicks", beats behind soundclips from the 2003 peace marches, plus a chanting chorus that starts with "Peace -- Now", segues to "This is what democracy looks like, this is what democracy sounds like", and continues, indeed, to new kicks for old ideas.

Free*land with "We Want Your Soul" -- in the tradition of list poems (e.g. John Lennon), with a killer ending.

Plus Anti-Flag, Hamell on Trial, Ani Di Franco, Sonic Youth, Jurassic 5, and over a dozen more.

This compilation is like a deep, porous sponge with many dead ends hidden in the most unlikely places. I don't mean to say it's disappointing; actually, it's quite the contrary. Think in terms of economics. A bargain, a deal, a steal. You start to believe you're getting something for free. And in a society where capitalism wrings each paycheck dry, it feels good to enjoy the supposed best things in life. Merge has hit us with a collection of odds and ends...3 CDs deep, it's a healthy mixture of indie gems and pointless experimentation, all for the price of one CD. Know what you will about Merge, but all I knew prior to my purchase was that Merge is Spoon's label. That was reason enough for me to take a chance on three CDs for the price of one...and it should be reason enough for any indie pop-rock enthusiast who would like to discover a new reason to blow a paycheck on music by one or more of the Merge artists you'll discover through repeated listens to this compilation. The first two CDs give the listener a nostalgic retrospective, while the third disc is chock full of B-sides and songs recorded especially for this collection.

Outstanding value - 3 CDs for the price of one. Discs One and Two contain previously released material from Neutral Milk Hotel, Superchunk, M Ward, Spoon, etc. Disc Three contains previously unreleased material from Merge artists. The Camera Obscura and Essex Green tracks on Disc Three are my favorite songs from each band. This would make a great gift for a budding indie rock fan.

An excellent sampler of the North Carolina indie label at any price. All the big guns are here (Superchunk, Versus, M. Ward, Spoon) with some of their best stuff ("Anything You Want" Spoon, for example), but the pleasures of this compilation are in the lesser-known acts that shine through, such as the Ladybug Transistor, Camera Obscura, and Annie Hayden. Even if you're not completely familiar with all the bands (or only about half, like me), the formula means that you'll be rewarded for listening.

Strangely, or perhaps not so strangely, most of the material has aged well, and while the guitar is the noisemaker of choice throughout, the variety of styles is diverse. Witness disc two, which begins with Spoon, swings to a serene Ladybug Transistor tune (complete with mariachi horns), shifts gears to jazz-pop with M. Ward, then visits post-alt guitar territory with Versus.

Discs one and two are the hits; disc three is perhaps the roughest of the set, but there are still some fine tunes to be found there. Highlights from that disc: Camera Obscura "San Francisco Song", Spoon "Decora" (a cover of the great Yo La Tengo song that opens their "Electro-pura" album).

This cd has some great tracks on it. DJ Escape did an awesome job with this one, it really makes you want to get up and dance.
