this album gets 5 stars because it features a rare track from the only band that matters ,SMOGTOWN.long live beach punk and long live SMOGTOWN!!!!!!!!!!

WOW, i originally only bought this for the unreleased rancid and dropkick murphys songs but found my self realy enjoying the rest of the songs more. i had heard of some of the other bands but immediately started searching for stuff from the ones i hadn't. Its a great cd and well worth it.

One of the best MOS cd's in a long time. its got all the great tunes from the past 3 years. I wish they made music like this again.

Inspiring works of harsh political reality. ...Not just music, but a sobering slap in the face concerning the injustices being served up by a President un-elect.

I taped my first Punk and Disorderly album from a friend in the early 80's. I played the... out of it until some jerk stole it from me. This is a great way to start your punk collection. Every song has energy and pounds away. This is great way for people not familiar with these bands to get a sampling of what punk is about. Then go see these old farts when they come to your town. Hey they're probably running out of money.

i have to say this is the most listend to cd since i bought it..its simply amazing......the first band is a awsome band with a obsesion with the movie "weird sience" they open 3 tracks with clips from the movie and there record cover is from the movie....the next band is isocracy....not much to say about them...there a prty good band...fast and thats how i like it.....but i have to say that by far plaid retina is the best band on here...they deliver 12 songs in 10 minuts...and its non stop speed....not to mention there form my home town!!!and i had never herd of them till now!!!!i love it.....and you can do your self by skiping EVERY song by the yeste girls....the blow...and posibly listen to the next band...but i would just re start the cd when it goes onto the yeste girls.....buy this cd....and tell your frends..they will want it

Living in South Georgia,this album proves to me that there are other musical artists around besides Brittany,Cristina and the like.Buy it and I bet you will be buying the artist's other music...I did!

i basically bought this cd for the EXTREMELY hard-to-find song, "the way to your heart", by soulsister, a #41 hit in 1989. but there are also major hits from the 80's here as well, like "c'est la vie" (robbie nevil), "don't forget me (when i'm gone)", (glass tiger), "walking on sunshine", (katrina & the waves), "telefone (long distance love affair)", (sheena easton), "simply irresistible", (robert palmer), "the future's so bright, i gotta wear shades", (timbuck 3), "let's go all the way", (sly fox), "bette davis eyes" (kim carnes--the only #1 song in this collection), and another rarity, the minor hit "really sayin' somethin'", by the fun boy three with bananarama. overall, it's an intersesting and eclectic mix of songs, sure to bring back a few memories of a time when pop music was truly fun and exciting to listen to.

What more can I say, this is my favorite release in the Mountain Stage series. FRom the opening song, "Alright Guy", a song drenched in as much humor as cynicism, to Wilco's trimmed down acoustic rendition of "I Must Be High", this cd release is the tighest selection and mix in the series to date. Other highlights include "Welfare Music", and of course Souther Culture drops in with another song about food. From start to finish, not a clunker is found on this disc.

Back when I was in high school, friends used to make mix tapes for me. I'd listen, get excited about some of the songs, and go hunt down the albums from the musicians that created them. It was a lot of fun, but I haven't really done that in a while.

Buying this brought me back to those days. Somebody in the Rykodisc ranks made me (and everyone who is willing to spring for it) a mix of a bunch of songs he or she (or more likely they- some kind of committee most likely) appreciated in some way. As with any mix that I'd receive, I like some parts more than others. I'll tend to listen to the Devo or Sugar tracks repeatedly, and skip over "Happiness is Drumming," for example. But the beauty of it is that you can pick out what you like best and skip the rest. Then, you can go buy albums by the artists if you are so inclined.

Which is how I discovered "With These Hands" by Alejandro Escovedo, one of my new favorite discs. And how I learned that Soul Asylum used to sound a lot more like "Husker Du" than "Runaway Train." You'll have your own minor revelations too, I'm sure. And if there's nothing on here that does it for you, you're not out much cash.

One warning-- the focus here is on 80s and 90s "alternative" rock for the most part, so if you are adverse to that loose genre description you're better off saving your money.

This CD reminds me of those "compilation tapes" that I and friends used to make years ago for ourselves that had all of our favorite songs on them. It's a lot of fun and never gets dull. And if anyone else listening doesn't like a song or artist, it doesn't matter, because there's only one song by that artist anyway. But, more likely, someone will say, "That last song was so cool! What's it called and who did it?"

Some "sampler" albums can go all over the place as per quality and interest, but this one packs a punch all the way through. And what a show! Frank Zappa, Yoko Ono, and Jimi Hendrix all on the same CD! For many, the CD will be a mixture of old favorites and new discoveries.

I recommend this CD for both it's fun and also for it's potential to inspire new directions in your collecting. It would serve well as a CD to play at a party without having to pick out what goes together-- it's done for you! And sometimes you might be surprised how much you like something that you never heard before!

This CD was a great surprise. All of the tracks stand firmly on their own. "SAFETY FIRST" represents a great mix of the best new music in Chicago. Emphasis has its finger on the pulse of the re-emerging Chicago scene.
