Indie Rock Compilations music review A solid collection of hits, B-sides and other Seekers tracks
I have no problem with the idea that the Seekers were the most popular Australian group of the Sixties mainly because off the top of my head I cannot think of another Australian group from that time period. But from late 1965 to about 1967 the Seekers were the hottest part of the folk-rock segment of the British Invasion on the strength of their hits "A World of Our Own Pop Singles" (#19), "I'll Never Find Another You" (#4), and "Georgy Girl" (#2). I have to admit, I always thought of them in the same breath as the New Christy Minstrels and the Rooftop Singers than Peter & Gordon or Chad & Jeremy.

The Seekers consisted of high school classmates Athol Guy on (upright) bass, Keith Potger on 12-string guitar, and Bruce Woodley on guitar, who were joined by singer Judith Durham, who was actually a jazz-singer with perfect pitch dabbling in singing folk songs. The other important figure in their story was Tom Springfield, the brother of singer Dusty Springfield, who wrote most of their top hits once the group got to England. There they also met a young Paul Simon, who wrote "Someday One Day" for the Seekers, who also covered his "Cloudy."

"The Very Best of the Seekers" is a hyperbolic title, but with almost two dozen tracks all that is missing are some of the more traditional folk songs and Australian songs that the group recorded. The emphasis here is on not only the major hits, but the group's minor singles, B-sides, and album tracks. There are some odd little pieces ("Emerald City" uses a bit of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" from Symphony No. 9), but overall there is clearly an effort to focus more on original (or at least unique) material and less on their covers of songs by other artists (e.g., "Red Rubber Ball"). The common denominators are the nice harmonies, with Durham's perfect pitch voice soaring over and through them. You might not be able to tell the difference between the New Christie Minstrels and the Rooftops Singers, but there is no mistaking the sound of the (original) Seekers.

Indie Rock Compilations music review Four Strong Winds..The Seekers and Judith Durham..
Judith Durham, Keith Potger, Athol Guy, and Bruce Woodley make up this Folk and Traditional group from Down Under, who had great success here in the mid sixties, but internationally were stars from about 1963 till now. They actually are being rediscovered by a new generation today.

To the people who do not know this group, they were primarily folk and traditional, and made great use of their contempories including Paul Simon, Tom Springfield, and many others. They are led by one of the worlds greatest voices - Judith Durham. When you hear the voice, you know immediately who it is, and listen since her use of lyrics is easily understood, clear, and melodic. It's hard to compare with anyone today, it's that good.

Of course the music. There hits are mentioned in the album listings, but this is a sampler of their better known works here. The multi box set "The Seekers Complete" is recommended as a companion to this one for those who discover this group as I did.

Some of the biggest were written by Tom Springfield of "The Springfields" and whom is Dusty Springfield's brother. "I'll Never Find Another You" and "World Of Our Own" are examples of his work, and you will hear the distinctive 12 string guitar and stand up bass that is characteristic of their early work. The lyrics and rendition are excellent, and are some of the greatest folk releases of the generation."Morningtown Ride" and "Sinner Man" ae other favorites. Remember in this Genre, folk means usually entire albums are good, and are not necessarily aimed at "single" release.

This CD is an excellent example of their work, and is well worth having. If you like them, go deeper as many other albums exist, and showcase more of their Australian folk songs as well.

They recently had a hugely successfull reunion, (huge in Britain as well) and have released material again and solo. Nothing has really changed, they continue to excel. The Voice is still there, the energy, and the love of the folk tradition..and it shows. I actually have Judith Durham's single solo releases, (Jazz-Blues), which demonstrates the breadth of the work.

MOST highly Recommended..For Folkies and 60's Lovers alike. A requirement for The Folk Generation, an a band too often overlooked by US "Folkies" since they are not from the US. The sound quality of the CD is excellent, and is one of the best "greatest hits" packages out there, from their original label.

You WILL like them. They are that good. 5 Stars all the way.

Indie Rock Compilations music review Yester-year once again
No words can express this cd. This groups voics are clear, strong and will stay in our heads forever. When I hear this cd, it takes me back to those hot summer days of wearing cover-alls, dirt faced, sun bleached blond hair on a ten year old boy smelling the fresh sheets flapping in the breeze on the farm. The song "I'll Never find Another You" is a song that will haunt you and stay with you. This cd is a must have. It's great for introducing your children to folk music and to have tons of fun. Not since I bought the cd of "We Five" have I loved a group so much.

Indie Rock Compilations music review When will she record again?
Over the last year, this is the CD that I consistently keep putting in my car stereo to listen to over and over. "Wounded Heart" and "Nightingale" certainly deserve the attention they have gotten by being covered by Bonnie Raitt and Jennifer Warnes, respectively, but attention should also be paid to the wonderful "Cry Wolf" that is great to sing along with, and the haunting "When Someone Speaks Your Name" that has one of the most original and beautiful melodies I have heard in a long time. Johnstone uses her unique voice to perfection, and each song is a treasure. When will she record again? I'm eager for more.

Indie Rock Compilations music review Coming of Age
...Jude Johnstone's CD, honestly,
is #1. My musical tastes are wide and varied: from Medieval
to Classical to Irish to Classic Jazz, Opera, and Rock/Folk
and Bluegrass. Rather than enjoy different types of music,
I enjoy music itself, for I am a firm believer that education
and expression/emotion are more powerful through music than speaking.
When one listens to this CD,this power becomes readily
apparent. Every song has true and powerful emotion.
"Wounded Heart" and "The Nightingale" make me cry... They are 2 of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Even though "Wounded Heart" is also one of the saddest songs I have heard, it somehow laces the feeling of hope and strength around the sadness. Every music lover, and, indeed, every human, can relate to the emotion, and those very pure feelings deep down
in our souls, which this beautiful and simple CD digs out. I feel the emotions of life in their purest forms when I listen to this CD, and I listen to it all the time. Thank you Jude Johnstone.

Indie Rock Compilations music review An extraordinary talent
I first became aware of "Coming of Age" after an interview with Jude Johnstone on National Public Radio. I haven't reacted so
positively to a recording I first heard on the radio since hearing Luciano Pavarotti in "The Daughter of the Regiment" in 1971. I purchased the album and was amazed and overwhelmed by the artistry displayed. "Wounded Heart," and, especially, "The Nightingale" are extraordinary works, both in their creation and execution. I have yet to tire of listening to them, and continue to play them for with everyone whose tastes I respect--and even for those whose tastes I don't respect.

The last singer/songwriter that had such a profound affect on me was Randy Newman, when I first heard "Good Old Boys." My enjoyment of his music has continued for over 30 years. I hope that Ms. Johnstone, too, will continue to record her material,
so that I may continue to purchase it and enjoy it for many, many years.

With "Coming of Age," Jude Johnstone has created an extraordinay work of art.

This benefit CD for the Northwest AIDS Foundation collects a dozen previously released remakes of classic rock and soul songs from the 1960s to the 1980s. Each listener will find his or her own highlights--this corner has always been partial to Aztec Camera's to-swoon-for take on Van Halen's "Jump"--but the entire disc makes for tasteful play-through. The overall slant is positive, with Sarah McLachlan (Donovan's "Wear Your Love Like Heaven"), the Go-Go's ("Cool Jerk"), and John Wesley Harding (Madonna's "Like a Prayer") in particularly sunny moods. Cover Me should stand not only as a fine fundraising tool for a great cause, but as a reminder that the foundation still has much vital work left to do. --Rickey Wright

Indie Rock Compilations music review A MUST HAVE CD
Far and above one of the best compilation CD's to date. A must have for Sunday morning lounging or an easy dinner with friends. A perfect gift for a friend!

Indie Rock Compilations music review cover me covers all
Cover me is a great musical compilation that has something for everyone. A real treat and best of all you get great music and help out a very worthy cause at the same time.

Indie Rock Compilations music review Great Tunes!
I'm not a sophisticated music listener but have found this disc to be on "permanent play" in my car and home CD player. I really like the version of "Like A Prayer", "Jump" and Melkey Sedek's amazing voice. I'm giving these out as stocking stuffers to everyone in my family! The fact that the profits go to fight AIDS is just a bonus.

Indie Rock Compilations music review first class sound with Dion's hits
Here is Dion & Dion and Belmonts in a wonderful series of hits. Great fun for those new to the music and great memories for those who remember.

After Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and, Jerry Lee Lewis, Rock music fell into the doldrums of 58-63 and the Italian American doo-wop groups went into the gap. (There were really two '60's - the later wild '60's, after '65, that everyone knows, and the totally different early 60's). No money for instruments, they developed 4 part harmonies singing acapella on the streets corners on Phildelphia and New York. Many of them were not very talented, Fabian Forte, Frankie Avalon, etc. But head and shoulders above the rest of them was the alternately sensitive or swaggering baby-faced Dion DiMucci, the Swinging King of the Bronx. Originally Dion's soaring tenor with his greaser friends from Belmont Avenue.

Dion had (still has) a great voice. This collection has all his great hits and a few lesser ones. Many cautionary tales about Dion getting cheated on by a variety of sl_tty girlfriends (Runaround Sue, Little Diane), gold digggers like Donna the Prima Donna or Dion feeling sad about being alone. But there is also a lot of fun and swagger, with songs like "The Wanderer".

The sound reproduction here is first class! It starts good with four chords songs like "the Wanderer" and gets better and better, reaching it's peak with "Ruby Baby", "Donna the Prima Donna" and the sideways sea-sick "Drip Drop". These pressings sound like they could have been recorded yesterday!

Compare Dion's "Ruby Baby" with Donald Fagen's (Steely Dan) classic cover on "Nightfly". Then compare this music to Dion's masterful Dion's new acoustic blues release "Bronx In Blue". Great, truly memorable music on all three albums. You need these albums in your collection.

Indie Rock Compilations music review There is Only One Dion
This is an absolutely irreplaceable collection of some of the real themes of another era. If you are trying to evoke the mood of the 1950s, who better than Dion?

This collection spans a long period of time, indeed. Dion was criticized for recording the same song over and over again. There are strong thematic resonances in his music, all right, but this collection takes us al the way up to somethings which sound totally different, too.

Dion's talent and originality will last for decades to come. If you need a reminder, this collection is really first-rate.

Indie Rock Compilations music review Absolutely fantastic
Incredible quality of these original recordings by Dion & The
Belmonts. They are almost all there and there couldn't have
been a better choice on the 20 titles selected. If you liked
Dion already those days this CD is a "dream come true"
especially for two songs that were hard to get on other
compilations: Drip Drop and Donna The Prima Donna. Don't
hesitate, buy it!

Indie Rock Compilations music review time warp
What a surprise to discover that a song I recorded when I was 15 years old, in 1965, is selling on a compilation in 2005!!! I played the farfisa organ on "Searching" by the "Omens". We recorded this in a cramped, second floor apartment in Hammond, Indiana on a reel to reel tape. It was a wild time, playing teen clubs and sock hops, and paying WLTH DJ Ron Borden every $ we made to play the record on his radio show. This collection captures the vibrant energy of the 60's and showcases the raw talent that was rampant at the time.

Indie Rock Compilations music review Don't think twice about picking this one up!
It goes without saying, with a collection title like ESSENTIAL PEBBLES, each song should be a winner. Disc 1 collects the creme de la creme of the first 10 CD volumes of the PEBBLES garage/punk series, and not one of these songs is bad! From The Preachers' "Who Do You Love" to Teddy and Patches' "Suzy Creamcheese" to The Trolls' "Every Day and Every Night" to The Uncalled For's "Do Like Me" to Keith Kessler's "Don't Crowd Me", all 29 tracks are a superb primer for the newcomer to the garage scene and will have you scrambling to get every volume of the PEBBLES collection (buyer beware: not all of them are this great). The last three songs, The Mile Ends' "Bottle Up and Go", Bohemian Vendetta's "Enough", and "Don't Crowd Me", are from the EAR PIERCING PUNK CD, an offshoot volume of the PEBBLES run.

Disc 2 is where the collection starts to wane. Containing 26 rare 45's and acetates from around the U.S., including some groups whose names are unknown (!), this is the real reason that even those who have every PEBBLES CD will be in heaven with this set. Not every song on this disc is a classic; as a matter of fact, you might say some of them deserve to be left in the dusty vaults they came from. But the highlights include: The Motifs' "Someday", The Shays' "Brainwashed" (which is bleeped for profanity!), The Sinners' French-language "Sinnerisme", The Mixed Emotions' "Can't You Stop It Now", The Thunderbolts' "Heart So Cold", Peter and the Wolves' "Hey Mama" and "Only Everything" (a cover of Them's "I Can Only Give You Everything"), The Shades' "Down the Road Apiece", The Dynamic Nutones' "Sick and Tired", The Hustlers' "The Sky is Black", The Thorns' "I'm in Love", and an unknown group's "Fed Up". Unfortunately a lot of the songs tend to sound identical to one another, but the fact that they probably weren't heard outside of their particular region makes them a real treat to finally be able to experience!

Indie Rock Compilations music review USA Today
I was getting my oil changed at the local walmart the other day when I saw a lead article in USA today about how kids are starting to listen to the same music their parents did. Most of the kids quoted complained about a lack of quality with todays rockers. This is true. The problem is that no kids are learning to make it anymore.
The essential pebbles collection has none of this. All of the songs here were made by kids who were emulating everyone else they could see. 1966 was the most prolific musical year in history. And there are no bad songs on disc one. Even disc two is historically interesting. By the way, there are no master tapes to make the cd from. The singles are all that survives now. Some of what is on disc two has only one copy known worldwide. It saddens me to think what likely has been lost over the years.
This is the disc that made me get off my rear end and break out the old bass guitar, at age 42. If you know a kid who listens to Queen or the Rolling Stones, get them this and the nuggets box. We need new blood very badly.

Indie Rock Compilations music review I Have Always Remembered This Great Artist !
Was there ever a time in your life when a singer touched you so much with a gifted voice on the radio and then only wonder what happened to them a short time later? If you are my age I am pretty sure you are going to say yes. For me one of those singers is Beverly Bremers. In the days of Vinyl, 8-Tracks, Bell Bottoms and no internet it was very easy to loose track of many artists especially those who had only one maybe two hits and I believe several of you will agree with me. I purchased Beverlys, Don't Say You Don't Remember, on a 45 as soon as it was available in late 1971 to early 1972 because it was so beautiful. It peaked at a well deserved # 15 on the Billboard Pop Chart in 1972. Beverly also had one song that was a Top 40 and yet another that was a top 60 and they were, We're Free, and, I'll Make You Music, in that order and all three are here. To me Beverly sounds great on each and every track on this extremely rare Disc. She even sings an ole Rascals tune being track # 3 and also an ole Johnny Rivers classic being track # 9.
If you are only wanting Beverly's, Don't Say You Don't Remember, you can find it on Vol. 7 of Rhino's, Super Hit's Of The 70s:Have A Nice Day, series (And Vol.7 is becoming rare) but I wanted this Disc.I fill very lucky to have found it. If all music fans were like this ole boy this CD would be easy to find because she had a voice that touched some thirty three years ago. Thanks Bev: I have always remembered.

Indie Rock Compilations music review Star Of Stars
This lady is an incredibly awesome singer, and no doubt, a wonderful human being! I bought/still have her Sceptor Records "I'll Make You Music" Lp when it was issued and I was in school, as well as her two classic hit "45"s, "DON'T SAY YOU DON'T REMEMBER" and "WE'RE FREE" - plus several of the followup singles: "I'll Make You Music", "Run To Him"(Originally a Bobby Vee hit in early 60's)and her movie soundtrack single "Heaven Help Us". Great songs from a great artist! www.beverlybremers.com - THANK YOU BEVERLY for your great songs and the wonderful memories they bring! She deserves to have ALL her recordings reissued on a double disc compilation.

Indie Rock Compilations music review Gorgeous & talented too!!
When I first heard "Don't Say You Don't Remember," after it's release in late'71, it was as if I'd been swept back to the late 50's or early 60's when girls & girl groups dominated the charts. I'm surprised that the song only peaked at 15 on the Billboard Pop chart -- but then, Carole King & Carly Simon and that whole transition into the country/folk/rock thing ruled the airwaves then. "Don't Say..." was a breath of fresh air. Plus, I guess, it was kinda cool that she's from my home town (Chicago).

I still have her original "I'll Make You Music" Sceptor LP (SPS 5102) with that great picture of her in the pink silk dress. One of my favorite tracks was "Get Smart Girl," and I thought it was gutsy of her to take a Rascal's tune (A Girl Like You) and make it hers (A Guy Like You). Nice job on "Poor Side of Town," too. In any case, I recommend this CD if only because there's so little of this talented lady that's been released, and she hardly deserves to be among Pop's One Hit Wonders.

Indie Rock Compilations music review one of the best comps
Not So Quiet on the Western Front is one of the best comps because it offers most of the best hardcore/punk from California and Nevada at the time. I definitly recommend this to anyone who is new to hardcore,Check it out.

Indie Rock Compilations music review The Alternative Tentacles/Maximum Rock & Roll compilation.
Ah, i didn't even know this had been reissued but i'm glad that it has.

There are a number of reasons why you should own this. One is that it's probably the best hardcore compilation ever recorded. At the very least it's every bit as good as "flex your head" or "this is Boston and not L.A".

Another is the line-up : Dead Kennedys, Crucifix, 7 Seconds, Fang, Flipper, MDC, Intesified Chaos, Code Of Honor, The Church Police, Capitol Punishment and pretty much ever other early 80's hardcore/punk/noise band from California you can think of.

But, the most important reason why you should own this is because it includes the song "holocaust" by M.A.D who were the early incarnation of Bl'ast!. This, to my knowledge, is the only M.A.D song that's ever been officially released from their 1982 demo tape. Anyway, you know the song that plays in the background at the start of "time to think" by Bl'ast! on the "power of expression" lp before the guitars crank up and the scattershot drums come in..? This is that very song.

Indie Rock Compilations music review The Definitive NorCal Punk Compilation
This is it; this is the music that liberated thousands of my fellow Northern Californians. There's some truly kick-ass $hit on here. And while the styles range tremendously, every song on this album is good. And then some are GREAT, like "Pay Salvation" by Los Olvidados or "Breakout" by UXB. If you like Maximum Rock and Roll, you will love this album! This is a monument to nonconformity and I highly recommend it.

Indie Rock Compilations music review long live the salsoul orchestra
Now this is one hell of an album. If disco and dancing was ever your thing, then this compiliation is absolutly mandatory
It seems like every song is a N.Y club scene classic. The only thing missing was the disco ball!

Indie Rock Compilations music review Another World Of Disco!
This collection along with the "Salsoul Classics 2" is very essential to all disco fans that want something different than mainstream artists like Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor...

If you bought "The Disco Box" and/or "The Disco Years, Vol. 1-7", then you will like this collection. Salsoul was just as important to the Disco era as those artists. First Choice, Instant Funk, Double Exposure, and of course The Salsoul Orchestra (which had friendly competition with MFSB and Love Unlimited Orchestra) were talented artists that helped spawn disco. Highly recommended.

Indie Rock Compilations music review The Greatest songs in Salsoul history
Without question the greatest selection of music from the
Disco era and one unforgettable record company.
There is not one day that goes by that I am humming
in my head " My love is free' by Double Exposure.
Loleatta's hits "Hit and run", " Love Sensation" and " Dreamin".
" Doctor Love" and " Double Cross" by First Choice.
The music of 2000 and up will never reach the status of classic.
These are songs that will transcend time and I will never stop
dancing to them.

Like the Langley Schools Music Project reissue, The American Song-Poem Anthology captures a fascinating, if unessential, moment in modern music making. Back in the '60s and '70s, ads in the back of magazines beckoned readers to submit their very own "song-poems," original ditties of often dubious quality. Hopeful songwriters were then given an offer they (thankfully) couldn't refuse: for a few hundred bucks, creative session musicians would do their best to use the public's lyrics and churn out an actual, honest-to-goodness recorded album that they could cherish forever. Some of the finest recorded results--not counting those still awaiting to be discovered in thrift store dime bins--can be found on this often surreal disc. Who can complain about the aptly-titled "Do You Know the Difference Between Big Wood and Brush"? Who can't relate to a song like "I Lost My Girl to An Argentinean Cowboy"? Well, lot's of people. But that's beside the point. It's hard not to love these songs--some patriotic, some romantic, most just plain bizarre--that enterprising young musicians did their best to spice up in any number of different genres (country, funk, disco, and, of course, rock). The songs made by Rodd Keith are particularly genius, but fans of novelty music will be hard-pressed to fault any of these 28 oddball cuts. --Jason Verlinde

Indie Rock Compilations music reivew "Beat-Poet" society!
Although I usually don't write customer reviews on material lots of others already covered I just couldn't resist on this collection! It seems that in the world of "novelty" there are three basic categories, IMO and each is definitely represented here.

First are the "duds". By definition, either a song so bad overall you just can't stand to listen to it. In this a subcategory - also ones that start out "cute, funny or whimsical" the first time you hear them and are TOTALLY ANNOYING any time after that!

The next are "limited shelf life" tunes that can't help sounding bad now, but they just reflect a bygone era! Here we have "Rat A Tat Tat, America" (about the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration), "Richard Nixon", "Jimmy Carter Says Yes", and one of the Disco tunes "How Long Are You Staying" among a few others.

Then there are the catchy ones! Either so bad they're good, great beat and decent lyrics or (pretty much great beat, weird lyrics as in most here!) Those to me are the most fun and make up for a "risky" purchase of something like this! Tops on my own list are the following:

"I like Yellow Things" - Bobbi Blake! I once saw an early appearance of Gloria Loring on Ed Sullivan where she was a young girl with cascading blond hair and dressed in flower child garb! Although I forget what song she actually sung, I kind of envision this type of a song coming out of her, since this is the type of material she went on to do (remember "Facts of Life" theme and "Friends and Lovers" in the 80s)?!

Groovy beat, weird lyrics faves of mine are "Human Absurdity", "Little Rug Bug", "City's Hospital Patients" and "Convertibles and Headbands". When songs put a funny visual in your head you know you've got something! Like a funky guy on guitar with two groovy chicks dancing and wailing behind him (Human Absurdity). Or a bunch of way-out nurses dancing funk to "Hospital Patients". I think my favorite catchy beat tune here is "Little Rug Bug"; but the weirdest thing about it to me is being a song about a baby but composed to sound like it should have been performed on "Shindig"!

Lastly are the ones so way out there they're funny! "Green Fingernails", "Gretchen's New Dish", "Palace Roses", "Duck Egg Walk" and my last two favorites of this list "Burmese Land" (Doom-doom-doom, dang-dang-dang! Boom-boom-boom, bang-bang-bang!) and the "untitled" performers of "Pinch Me"! Call it a coincidence, but these singers - both by vocal sound and style of song- remind me an awful lot of "Guy and Rolna" (Guy Hovis, Rolna English) from "The Lawrence Welk Show"! Kind of like they snuck out and did something a little more risqu to the chagrin of "Mr. Welk". One could see him tapping his foot and knitting his eyebrows at the couple for defying their "wholesome" image!

This is definitely a great piece of work for the serious collector, though!

Indie Rock Compilations music review To The Lunatic Asylum I'm Goin'
As a longtime fan of outsider music, I had to buy this CD, and it is now the only other album on the same level as the Shaggs "Philosophy of the World" in my collection (which if you have never heard you need to buy immediately.) This CD has 28 wonderfully bizarre song-poem tracks from some of the giants of the business like Rodd Keith and Ramsey Kearney, and many others who are less stellar in the song-poem stratosphere.

All of these songs have their own peculiar charms, but there are a couple that I consider to be the cream of the crop. My all time favorite has to be the semi-accurate account of the Apollo 11 moon landing in "The Moon Men:" I have never (ever) heard a melody line or rhyme scheme so complex to remember, and in fact I defy anyone to hum it or sing all the lyrics all the way through (I have tried and failed). "Green Fingernails" gets my vote for least lucid content, followed very closely by "Song of the Burmese Land," which features the self-evident lyrics "Boom boom boom, bang bang bang, doom doom doom, dang dang dang, to the lunatic asylum I'm Goin'...." (Really.)

There are too many others here to mention, and other listeners will have their favorites, but nobody will stand stoically aside and listen uncaringly to these songs. Truly, you will laugh, and you will cry (but only because you have been laughing so hard); this is a guaranteed good time for all.

I highly recommend this CD.

Indie Rock Compilations music review Like Grandma Moses set to music
Now if you ask me, and quite a respectable number of singing poets have over the years, then this here album is the firecracker to get your parade started down the avenue of life. If you don't know what I mean, then do yourself a favor and buy this here CD and play the third, eighth, and 20th tracks over and a\over again until you see the light. This here CD is a hoot to hear and a soul searching alternative to all that empty, meaningless, machine-made pop nonsense they got on the radio these days.

Back in the day when me and Mama were still courtin', we'd turn on the radio (I usually listened to "The Hayseed" back then) and hear songs of this type all the time on the AM dial because this is what folk were singing and listening to back then . Now you might commence to thinking, and you would be excused for doing so, that the back-of-the-magazine song poem deal is kind of special and noteworthy because the robot-generated text above rattles on and on about it as if it had some kind of merit when listening to this here music, but truth be node it don't.

Yes indeed, if you want to flog a dead horse and rant on and on about the fact that this here music was composed by regular saps like you and me and put to music in some questionable studio in a strip mall in suburbia by cheesy session musicians... then I'll grant you that point, but you're missing the point if that is all you see (and hear). See, this stuff is real. This stuff is from the soul (down near the spleen) and is full of the richness of life what pop artists can't get near because they are all coated in plastic and airbrushed to blemish-free perfection. That reminds me of the time Mama commenced to have that wart removed from the side of her nose. She went at it with a pair of pliers she found out in the shed and twisted and tugged and yanked and scarred herself up nice, but that ole' wart never did come off.

Now if you want a real treat, and I reckon you do because you need this here type of music in your life on a regular basis, then go ahead on and consider this an American art form and plunk down the change and get yourself a copy because (despite the machine generated reviews that can't get past the fact that this was back-of-the-magazine-ad-music) this is truly an art form... kind of like a Grandma Moses painting... it grows on you after you pay a lot for it.

Indie Rock Compilations music reivew CLASSIC INSTRUMENTAL
I FIRST HEARD THIS SONG AROUND 1975 ON AN AUTOMATED SOFT-ROCK STATION IN SANFORD, MAINE. I WAS 15 YEARS OLD. I LOVED TOP 40 RADIO AND ITS MUSIC. I LATER BECAME A DJ AND MUSIC/PROGRAMMER.

THIS SONG IS SO UNDER-RATED AND UNDER-PLAYED IT BOGGLES MY MIND. IF IT WERE PLAYED ON A CURRENT MOVIE SOUND SCORE OR USED AS A BACKDROP TO A 60'S ERA MOVIE, THIS SONG WOULD SHOOT TO THE STRATOSPHERE...WHITNESS WHAT THE MOVIE "GHOST" DID TO UNCHAINED MELODY BY THE RICHEOUS BROTHERS. IT RECEIVED MAJOR RADIO AIRPLAY, IT WAS HEARD ON BAKGROUND MUSIC IN STORES, IT WAS HEAVILY REQUESTED AT WEDDING AND RECORD HOPS...HOPEFULLY, THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO THIS SONG. I FEEL CERTAIN SONGS ARE BEST LEFT UNTOUCHED BY THOSE WHO MAY OTHERWISE RUIN THEM (INCLUDING SOME RADIO PROGRAMMERS). IT IS RARELY PLAYED ON OLDIES STATION, AND HARLDY PLAYED ON "MUSIC OF YOUR LIFE" OR MOR STATIONS. BUT, BUY THE CD AND SPREAD THE WORD TO YOUR CLOSEST FRIENDS, THEY WILL FOREVER THANK YOU FOR IT!

Indie Rock Compilations music reivew I finally found it!
I've heard Our Winter Love over the years but have never been able to find out the name of the song or artist. Lo and behold this morning, our radio station FINALLY gave the name of the song; my previous calls to the station were nonproductive!! Now I can order the CD. I agree with the other reviews that it is a most beautiful and haunting arrangement. I could, and probably will, listen to it over and over again!

Indie Rock Compilations music review Our Winter Love - a True Classic
As a junior in high school, I can well remember the first time I heard this great classic. It reached to #1 in Motown USA, where I grew up. It no doubt, was one of the greatest instrumental songs of the 60's.
I was able to talk with Bill Pursell about 6 years ago, and he shared with me about the history of this great song.
Baby boomers, if you want some wonderful memories, this is the song!
