This is not the greatest CD from Green Day, but it definitely has some awesome songs on it. My only complaint is that it has some religious aspects to it. I do not appreciate this as an atheist, especially since Green Day is not supposed to be a Christian rock band.

Of course there were high hopes for this album. It's frickin Green Day. But when I popped this CD in my player and listened to it for the first time, I can whole-heartedly say that I was 'satisfied.' Soon after 10 songs I was bobbing my head and drumming on my steering wheel. This is Green Day doing songs that Green Day does best.

This album is set up like a play; it has 3 "acts" and a total of 18 great songs and 0 bad ones. They utilize a technique where they start a song quietly, making you turn up your player, then blasts out their catchy guitar riffs. The only problems I could have with this album is that some of the songs sound a bit too familiar, but when I buy a Green Day album it's because I want to hear Green Day, not Green Day playing something I'm not expecting.

Favorite songs would have to be 21st Century Breakdown, East Jesus Nowhere, Viva La Gloria, Before The Labotomy and Last Of The American Girls

Least favorite: Know Your Enemy (it's just a stupid song), Restless Heart Syndrome (too slow, lacking replay value.)

All in all, this is a cheap album so if you have doubts, just get it anyway. If you hate it you can resell it on here and get [...] bucks back. If you like it, like I did, it will make a great addition to your Green Day collection. If this is your frist Green Day CD, go back to Dookie and work your way into this one. Report back in 5 years when you fully understand what these guys are about, and not what the media has played them out to be.

If your used to the sound of Greenday, its just on the same line and sound. No big surprises. It is enjoyable, but don't exspect different sounds or the music to change up, it doesn't. I'm glad I bought it because there isn't a whole lot out there right now.

Another awesome album from Green Day

AI is an incredible album! I just can't get enough of it. It's deep, poignant, beautiful, powerful. It's so many things. They just really got it right, I don't know how else to say it. I purchased this as my third or forth copy of this album as I have either worn out accidentally scratched others. I couldn't imagine not having it in my collection at all times. If you haven't done so, skip past the singles and listen to the lesser known tracks. Follow along with the lyrics, this album tells the story of a generation.

I read the review by the mom and not all artist's can please everyone, I do have a wide range of music I enjoy listening too but my fav has to be punk, alternative, rock. This cd "american idiot" is an all time fav of mine it has great lyric's and awesome music. I love green day and their creativity and they never let me down. I haven't listened to the entire new cd yet so I will wait to comment. Great Great album!!!

After listening to Greendays "21st century" for the first time, I had to go back to write about "American Idiot" I always hoped that Greenday's next album would somehow top this work of art. I'm honestly not sure what to think of their new one. I can say without a doubt that "American Idiot" is one of the best albums I have ever heard. With much dismay I have to say "American Idiot" is still this bands best album. Every track proves time and again that creativity isn't dead yet.

Why would a mother write a review about Green Day for her "kids" taste in music? She is a f%#king American Idiot? YES! And this record is exactly about that. Wake Up! Listen! Look Around You! This is the world we live, breath, sleep, love, and bleed in. American Idiot is an amazing record. Stop writing reviews because your "kids" have better taste in music then you! Progress, and get a fu&#ing LIFE! THIS IS AMAZING MUSIC!

I don't love every song on this CD, but there are some really good ones on it. I like some of the songs that you don't hear on the radio more than the ones that are played on it. I mainly bought this CD for Jesus of Suburbia, that is one of my all time favorite songs.

The Killers tried to be The Cure but...

I'm going to go straight to the point with this record. It's not a good album in my humble opinion. Here are the reasons why. The killers have this special and unique style to come up with songs that have always been so cool and catchy and cool again. "Hot fuss" was an awesome album that was decorated with all the band members' qualities that made most of the songs memorable. Then "Sam's town" came up and showed us that Brandon Flowers had this particular way to rock out too with the band in his own way and I must say that eventhough "Sam's town" wasn't better than "Hot fuss" was still a great record. Afterwards "Day and Age" is realesed and when I heard the song "Human" I remembered thinking: "cool! this is a nice "Pet shop boys" tune... maybe the whole album might be poppier that the other two". It's important to take into account that when I thought that I assumed that the band would come up with their own techniques and qualities again to realese a pop record. But what I found was The Killers trying to sound so 80's by moments like Blondie or The Cure and the problem is that they seem to try so hard to achieve that goal that they forgot all about the way the songs should sound. If I say earlier that this wasn't a good album is because the songs in here have no passion nor attitude whatsoever. The band plays like they were trying to sound like The Cure back in 1987 when the band realesed the "Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me" record but, they don't sound like the killers at all! There are good songs here like the singles "human" and "the world where we live in" ("Spaceman" wouldn't been an option for me as a single, it's just too dull and uninteresting by moments) but, honestly most of the album is just 80's pop music made by a great band that doesn't sound so great here.

I really hope that next time Brandon Flowers and company makes another pop record if they want but one where they can find their own identity while making the music (e.g. The Sounds as the best example to mention here with their latest album "Crossing the rubicon").

I've been a fan of The Killers since the beginning. I remember hearing Somebody Told Me on the radio back in 2004. I bought Hot Fuss soon afterwards, and I was blown away by the band's fantastic music and meaningful lyrics.

Since then, The Killers have given us many great hits and albums, including the Americana-Arena Rock of Sam's Town, and Sawdust, the solid collection of unreleased songs and B-sides

As you can probably imagine, the anticipation of Day & Age was very high for me. From the opening blasting notes of "Losing Touch", to the solemn closing of "Goodnight, Travel Well", The Killers deliver, in my opinion, their best and most solid album to date.

Day & Age accomplishes a rare feat; it takes you away to another place, another state of mind. You can hear the Vegas sound in the music, as well as the desert influences, but it goes much deeper than that.

Brandon Flowers is a very poetic lyricist. A lot of his lyrics really make you think about things.

The more I've listened to the album, the more I've grown attached to it. I've been listening to the album constantly since it came out in November

I recommend this album to anyone who is a Killers fan, but also to anyone who just loves good music

Progressively getting worse.

First the disclaimers:
- I am a Killers fan.
- I have all their CDs.

Having said that I will try to be honest as possible in giving these review. For me this is one of the few bands right know that can combine toughtful engagins lyrics with excellent instrumentation.. not limited to the usual sinthetizer, drums, guitar so prevalent today in the alternative turned mainstream bands..

For me this is review of the top 3 songs in the album:

Human (5 stars)The base guitar chord is amazing and it carries the song from beginning to end with succesive layers of instrumentation that give it a melancholic dance tempo beat.... with the usual excellent Killers lyrics.... Pay my respect to grace and virtue.....

The World We live In (4 stars)Thi song is not the usual Killer fare, but is does carry a very groovy rhythm, vaguely remicing of 80s pop... with an excellent arrangment of horn or synthetisers in this case.. Expect excellent lyrics as well

The Spaceman (4 stars)The firt time I heard it I put down this song as the usual attempt by well known bands to push a song just because they made it... but it does have its value...aside from the story line of the guy who was abducted by the aliens... Brandon Flowers vocal hability is clearly demonstrated in this song, as well as his synthetisers ability (wich I did not know that he played)... remicing in a way of early Depeche Mode.. good happy song overall with a good drum support.. also with a touch of 80s pop...

"Day and Age" is fantastic from start to finish. The songs are eminently singable and every song has a memorable hook. Everyone in the family loves this album - the toddler, the five-year old, the seven-year old, my wife, and I. We sing along in the car. My daughter has every word to Spaceman and Human memorized. The album contains 9 pop gems and one slow burner at the end...we have worn the CD out in the player. Put aside your "expectations" and just listen to the songs and enjoy them. If "sell-outs" (as several reviewers tagged the 'Killers') make music this fantastic, then so be it. But it is great music. To call the Killers sell-outs says more about the reviewer's expectations and personal preferences than it does about the band. In the end, it is pointless and a waste of energy to talk about what a band SHOULD do; makes more sense to critique what a band HAS done.

So after 6 years Rancid put out another ablbum.
You'll get a lot of 'they should have stayed with ...and out come the wolves sound' .
Personally I'm glad they don't put out the same album over and over.
You can always count on Rancid to throw something differant at you.
I was so happy with this one.
As lame and as simple minded as it sounds.
Every song on it seems to have it's place, no filler.
LA River took some time to get used to - still I'm convinced that Matt Freeman and the cookie monster are the same person/muppet, still, one of the better muppets!
New Orleans & Civilian Ways are two of the greatest songs Rancid has ever recorded, I'd throw them in there with Ruby Soho, Let me go, or Coppers.
The last track is perfect, easily influenced by Willie Nelson.
ALSO!
Don't look now, but you can get this album with a bonus cd + DVD.
The cd gives you a handfull of acoustic tracks from the album + a bonus song. These songs are right on par with the album version; Liberty and Freedom is a standout.
The best 15 smackers you'll ever spend!
Let's hope the next one comes out before 2015!

First off, I really liked the direction Placebo went with their last album "Meds", where the band incorporated more electronic influences into their music, as opposed to their usual live sounding style. Well, with the addition of a new, young and energetic drummer, Placebo has gone back to their more live rock sound as heard on previous three albums before Meds. With "Battle for the Sun" Placebo keeps their old sound, but at the same time spices things up by this time adding orchestral elements (i.e. violins and trumpets) to their music here and there to create a moodier atmosphere. Also, on BFTS the general sound of the music and lyrics have a more uplifting feel to them, with redemption being the major theme of this album. To be honest, I was hoping the band would continue in the direction Meds was going... but then again they did add the song "Bright Lights", which is a great Meds sounding song.

Overall, BFTS is a good album that on its own terms does not disappoint, and it is safe to say it is definitely on par with the rest of the bands consistently strong discography. My current favorite song on the record is "Speak in Tongues" uuuhhhh.... so good!

How many bands can you name that has consistently made great albums for over a decade? Placebo has done each and every album a bit better than the previous, not to mentiom that hardly ever you can find albums with great songs from beginning to end.
"Battle for the Sun" is a great album....hard to decide if it beats Meds, but without a doubt, amazing songs have been written and Brians sounds better than ever.....although I have to say I miss some of "the sex, the drugs and the complications" in Molko's lyrics.
A great CD.....a must have....and It grows on you very quickly.

I have been a fan of Placebo since 2003 when I went into a record store and on a whim bought Sleeping with Ghosts. I have never looked back. Sleeping with Ghosts is a truly genius album, and to this day 6 years later, one of my favourites. In 2006, Placebo released Meds. It was a decent album, with some great highlights (Space Money in particular) and now in 2009, here is Battle for the Sun. I will admit that at first i was bias, because this is the first time in 10 years an album has been done without ex-drummer Steve Hewitt. This suddenly turned to excitement when i first heard the title track 'Battle for the Sun'. It was the perfect song, a truly well rounded Placebo sounding effort that had me anticipating the new album.
When the special edition arrived on my doorstep (in two beautiful colour books no less) and I listened to it the first time one thought came to mind: this doesn't sound like Placebo. Where's the mega ballad? Where's the alternative and grunge type sounds? Then you have to remember that they've grown up. How many times can Brian write songs about androgony and drugs? You have to remember he's 36 and has a young son now. Things have changed and I think that's why Placebo have lasted as long as they have. Every album is different. Without You I'm Nothing (their second effort) was very slow and soft, Black Market Music (their third album) was very electronic and Sleeping with Ghosts was...perfect.
After a few more listens, some songs started to stand out, Ashtray Heart, Bright Lights and Breathe Underwater, just to name a few. Still, Battle for the Sun would have to be my favourite song on the album because it is the only song that sounds truly like a Placebo song. The band's sixth effort shows no signs of a band past their prime, or a band that has lost the plot. This album reeks of a band who are changing with the times, who are developing, who are experimenting and who are progressing. This album is a fantastic effort from Brian and co. and will live next to Sleeping with Ghosts in my cd player for a long time to come.

Great songs, individually and as a package. Peppy, melodic rock. However, I have to deduct a star for the bad recording. This is another instance of trying to make the songs too loud. The drums are so heavily compressed that the cymbals pump to a distracting degree. The cymbals fade in and out unnaturally on many tracks, but most noticeably on Help I'm Alive and Stadium Love, two of my favorites. Compare the album versions to their live versions on youtube. Great album, but it could sound better.

I first heard of Metric on the podcast "Sound Opinions." The two gentlemen on the show, Jim and Greg, both gave Metric's newest album a "Buy It" rating on their "Buy it, Burn it, Trash it" scale. I liked the excerpts I heard, so I decided to download it, and I'm very glad I did. Metric has a wonderful Indie/New Wave sound that is a delight for fans of the genre. And if you're relatively unfamiliar with popular music and/or don't think you like it, I would recommend starting with Metric's "Fantasies," since it's so melodic and energetic, and will make for a good jumping-off point to explore other music of that type.

Lead singer Emily Haines and guitarist Jim Shaw are both probably best known for the cult favorite Broken Social Scene. But they both really shine in "Fantasies," which has electro-pop energy and an excellent vibe. The standout track is clearly "Gimme Sympathy." In it, Haines asks, "Who would you rather be? The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?" The implied answer is neither- the point is to get out of the need to ask yourself that kind of question. All of the songs seem to be about living outside the prescribed margins, so to speak. Haines' songwriting and singing skills and the rest of the band's musical energy combine to make this an excellent album.

I've been listening to Metric for a few years. My first exposure to their infectious and mildly social conscious rock was at one of their shows. Then I happened to take a trip to Toronto where I purchased two of their albums. I instantly loved the melodies and messages. This latest album also does not disappoint. Listen to "Sick Muse" and "Satellite Mind"--a couple of my favorite. Actually, start from the beginning and don't stop because the set has such a good flow.

It's funny that in the song "Gimme Sympathy", they ask if you would rather be the Beatles of the Rollings Stones. I think it is funny because groups like this seem to move Rock well beyond those two groups.

It's just a great blend of themes, melodies, voice, mood and pleasant shifts within the songs. If you want some controlled high energy Rock try Sick Muse and Front Row. There's a focused intensity to a lot of these songs, and they know how to back off the throttle a bit and then bring it back.

I'm sorry, but this is a bit of a miss for me. with each album, metric seems to become more self aware. Instead of simply being themselves, they aim for some sort of vibe. They don't seem secure enough to instead simply be genuine and be themselves. this is the sort of commercial sellout album that many bands make, and this was metrics time to make it. this is the album where the diehards sort of groan. you could sense this one coming. their sounds has never been more polished and easily digestible. no frat boys will be scared. they don't touch the war or commercialism or any of that, which is a shame because songs like monster hospital and sucessxy were so scathing and perfect. sharp little indie pop rock knives. but the claws are hidden for fantasies. This time it's all about dreaming and being free and relaxing in fields and not having a worry. it's just a cop out from a band that can do better. I am giving it three stars because the stuff that is good on here is excellent, but the duds make a sardine sandwich seem palatable. Collect Call is a bit airy but sounds like fleetwood mac, which is interesting and overall a plus. Twilight Galaxy is totally fantastic. Stadium Love is a blast. Blindness is epic. But with all that is going on in the world, the pickings could have been so ripe, and Metric likely would have had an interesting perspective. Next time metric, leave the cheesy arena rock to the killers, alright?

I give this album 4 stars on the strength of Great DJ and That's Not My Name alone. It's worth having for those 2 singles. It's a must have if you're creating a time capsule for late 2008 or early 2009, or if you need a song to segue between the New Young Pony Club and Blondie.

Sweet as an alcopop, and sure to get all but the most jaded of ladies dancing.

Most of my reviews are for more hardcore genres of music but, VERY occasionally, a pop album catches my fancy. This is one of those albums. I saw a video (which I hardly watch MTV) for "Show Me What I'm Looking For" and liked it enough to download the album. The more I listen to the album the more I like it. The last pop band I liked this much was the Fray. I am not comparing this to the Fray for it is different. The songs are catchy and most have an infectious chorus. Pure pop delight. The above mentioned standout is probably the most overproduced pop song I have ever heard with all the elements including bells, dramatic crescendos, and even gospel singers! But the Euro producers hit an absolute grand slam with this song and it may be one of the best pop songs ever, in my humble opinion. The rest of the album is very good so this is definetly not a "one trick pony." I dare you to listen to "Show Me What I'm Looking For" and not then listen to it ten times in a row. The song is that good. This band will have a hard time besting this effort.

A great release by Domino: it really is a 2Lp set, 180 gram per LP, sounds really great too.

The gatefold sleeve is beautiful, it's also about 1 cm taller than average, it would not fit in any of my pvc sleeves.

If you like vinyl, get this: for less than £9 I consider this a bargain.

Some of the songs here are catchy and the variety that is provided on this album is an added bonus. It is very tough to give an album five stars, so I think my four star rating is fair and I recommend and will do the same myself in listening to the older albums to see the progression of their music.

I really like three songs on this album, No You Girls, Bite Hard, and What She Came For. None are bad, though a few sound like they are in beta, still experimenting. Overall a decent album.

These days it is extremely rare that I find an album I can enjoy from beginning to end. One where none of the tracks sound like "filler". I can say with confidence this is one of those rare albums. With a very original sound that will make you want to move this album has it all. Not only do these guys rock the house, they give you a little sample of dance, funk, disco and blend it in beautifully to create an unforgettable and irresistable product. Not only is this my favorite Franz Ferdinand album, it is one of my favorites that I've ever had. A must for anyone who appreciates good music and wants something different for a change.

There's not much I can say that hasn't been said already - bottom line is this is a classic and one for the ages - in my personal top ten albums of all time. Though it is their third studio album this is the one that put them on the map and while some turned their backs on them when they finally got some mainstream radio play I for one did not - fifteen years later I still have this album in heavy rotation. So if you are one of the few that don't already own it take a chance you won't regret it.

One of the definitive '90s albums

Well, it's been a long time since I've written a review, but I figure I'll come back on something big and amazing, like Green Day's "Dookie". Not much is needed to be said about this album, because a lot has already been said.
Even though this is one of Green Day's earlier albums, it shows that they've got skills in the songwriting department, as shown in such classics as "Chump", "Longview" and "Welcome To Paradise". As young as they were when they wrote these songs, they make them interesting and exciting. Then we have more riff-rocking anthems like the classic "Basket Case" and the melodic, shout-a-long "She". We even get to hear a bit of country influence in "Pulling Teeth"! Then comes along the mid-tempo "When I Come Around" a nice break in the faster pace of other songs.
Overall, if you like this style of music, you really can't go wrong here. This is one of those albums that you can play all the way through and love every second of it. It's the sound of thundering guitars and basses, and energetic drums. It's the sound of a summer day outside in California. It's the sound of classic Green Day! Thanks for the time, and peace.

My daughter likes this Green Day cd. I don't listen to it, I am not into them. I like about 2 of their songs, I think they sound like kangaroos are kicking them in their stomachs as they sing. But to each his own.

Dookie is the best album of Green Day! It still packs the rawness of its "Sweet Children," days but has the new shine from Reprise Records. And even though this album isn't my favorite (that would be Warning, which was released on 2000) it is still better than all their other albums combined, far better than American Idiot.
If you want to experience Green Day as they used to be, and know and understand what the oldie Green Day fans cherish, this is the album to buy! So besides rushing out to buy American Idiot just because a lot of the fans now are comprised of people who never really knew about this band till its release, advise you to, just buy Dookie and see if you like it. Because mostly Green Day is comprised of that sound and taste, this IS Green Day at its finest!

This album is a 90's masterpiece. I'm so tied of "true" punk fans that whine about Green Day not being punk enough. They combined perfect melody with fast punk riffs better than anyone. People will still be listening to this album 20 years from now.
