Indie and Lo-Fi music review just fantastic
one of my favorite albums. I've been a fan of mellowdrone since "a demonstration of intellectual property." the one with the track 'ride allong' which is a tough song to find these days. Box is in the tradition of mellowdrones' previous album, but more punchy and refined. It's in my top 5 as far as favorite albums go, and it's one of the few CD's I can just listen to on a loop.

Just listen to some of the samples. the music speaks for itself.

Indie and Lo-Fi music review Hot damn
I first heard "Beautiful Day" as a song on the soundtrack to Project Gotham on Xbox. I really liked it, but couldn't quite figure out what kind of genre it fell into. When I got online to look them up, I discovered that Mellowdrone has a genre of their own. I listen to all types of music from alternative to hip hop, classic rock to oldies and I must say there is a Mellowdrone song for every listener. What I like most about them is their ability to sing slow and seductively and then throw in a hard hitting base line. Check out "Beautiful Day", "Bone Marrow", "Limb to Limb", and "Orange Maramlade". Enjoy.

Indie and Lo-Fi music review Just Awesome!
I'm not one to write reviews but for Mellowdrone I had to throw in my 2c. I just can't get over how unbelievably good this band is. I initially downloaded the tracks 'c'mon try a little bit' and 'beautiful day' both of which I absolutely loved but now that I have the album I'm hearing just how expansive and diverse their sound really is. I cannot wait to see these guys live. In some ways Mellowdrone reminds me of Syntax, although the genres are a bit different with Syntax having more of a dance/club sound but I'd check them out if you like Mellowdrone.

Black Sheep Boy
Released in Audio CD by Jagjaguwar (05 April, 2005)
Amazon base price: $13.99
List price: $14.98 (that's 7% off!)
Used price: $9.83
Buy one from zShops for: $9.87
Artist: Okkervil River

Tracks:
  • Black Sheep Boy
  • For Real
  • In A Radio Song
  • Black
  • Get Big
  • A King And A Queen
  • A Stone
  • The Latest Toughs
  • Song Of Our So-Called Friend
  • So Come Back, I Am Waiting
  • A Glow
The band's name comes from an obscure Russian story and the album title comes from a song by fallen '60s folk hero Tim Hardin, but the haunting music here is purely the Austin collective's own. Like tour partners the Decemberists and soul mate Alasdair Roberts, Okkervil River deals primarily in dark string instruments and even darker poetry. "Some nights I thirst for real blood/ For real knives/ For real cries," singer Will Sheff sings on opening track, "For Real," signaling that his appetite for southern gothic muder ballads remains as strong as ever on the group's fourth album. The sinister "So Come Back, I Am Waiting" and "Black" confirm this suspicion. Less country, more Arcade Fire--whatever that means--Black Sheep Boy paradoxically also finds the band at its most commercially ambitious. Here, the slow death rattle of previous releases slowly gives way to explosive choruses and actual gore. --Aidin Vaziri

Indie and Lo-Fi music reivew Highly rated... guess I have to listen more
This album was highly recommended on many sites so I decided to give it a try. True, it's a good album and worth buying.

But, sometimes a little too much Bright Eyes and even Counting Crows. You got to like the singing I guess, otherwise the songs are all ok.

Indie and Lo-Fi music reivew pure
Black sheep boy is a total of pure songs. Getting used to the voice is step one, because the vocals are not the best I have ever heard. There speaks emotion out of it though, something I concider more important. The songs are very sing-a-long worthy once you've got to know them, which is step two. Very beautiful and pure. And third; start listening with 'for real', this is the most intense record of the whole album in my opinion.

Indie and Lo-Fi music review Okkervil River - The Black Sheep Boy: Best of 2005
Wooooow. I did not know what I was missing in Okkervil River until just a few months ago, when I read about them on Popmatters.com (their best of 2005 list). I would say I have to agree with them on their praise.

This band is awesome. Realllly, it is such a gooooooood band, what else can I say? "Black Sheep Boy" is a masterwork of solid rock tunes, with a touch of folk twang here, and a hint of "emo" softness there.

Though the first four songs are my favorite, none of the album lets down. This band is sure to offer more great albums in the future, and "Black Sheep Boy" is one of the best recent releases. Listen to it yourself, reading through these reviews will really just waste some listening time.

A Best Album of 2005

Indie and Lo-Fi music reivew Mix-and-match-musicianship
Okkervil River has been one of my favorite bands of the decade thus far. However, this CD seems to be just the scrapings of a few miscellaneous songs, with a few fillers just to justify putting it to market. Two songs of note: "Another Radio Song," which has been floating around for a few years, and "No Key No Plan," the only new song that's really worth hearing on the piece. This isn't to say that this album is bad, it's still better than 75% of the music I've bought this year, but if this is indicative of the future direction of OR then I am disappointed. The new Shearwater album is amazing, though, and perhaps this OR release feels rushed and pieced together because the band has been concentrating on that instead.

Indie and Lo-Fi music review Music is amazing
Sheff writes and sings with passion, feeling, and conviction. This music grabs you and grows on you. RCM
