Industrial music reivew One of the best...
Remix albums are hardly rarities in the electronic music market. With electronic bands churning out more singles and EPs in a 6-month period than most other genre bands put out in their entire career, they are among the most common sights in any band discography. However, in the case of VNV Nation, not only have they released a remix album that stands above the rest, but is also extremely difficult to find for less than the cost of a limb, let alone if you can find it at all. Of course, the band blames their former label for poor distribution, but that's neither here nor there. "Burning Empires" is perhaps one of the top five best remix albums ever released. An excellent complement to the fantastic "Empires," this CD reinterprets the songs off that album into a fresh new perspective, enhancing the power of the songs, and even giving us a couple of new ones.

The "Standing" single is also included, and it is incredible. The song is so emotionally uplifting with its catchy chorus and beautiful lyrics, the two mixes, (Still) and (Motion) more than do the original justice (which is also included). "Lastlight" is a remix of "Firstlight" and "Arclight," with a more upbeat rhythm, making the song far more danceable. It's one of two excellent examples of VNV's ability to infuse orchestral-driven melody with pulsating rhythms. The second example being the (Anachron) mix of "Legion," substituting the beat of the original with sweeping symphonics. "Kingdom (Restoration)" is an interesting mix that ups the ante from the original, giving it an even more aggressive feel. The vocal version of "Saviour" is my favorite track, for while the music is exactly the same as on "Empires," the vocals really enhance the song and make it feel complete. Ronan Harris' voice is very sad in this song, and the addition of vocoder vocal effects really give the song an extra punch. "Further" is one of two new songs (the other being the dance instrumental "Radius^2" from the "Standing" single), and it is absolutely beautiful. They are, I think, some of the best lyrics Ronan has written.

"Burning Empires" is a rarity, not just because of it being a limited edition release, but also because it's one of the few times when it surpasses its expectations. It's got all the elements of a great remix album, but the mixes are so diverse and so well done that it's not only an excellent complement to the source album, but it stands as an album on its own. If you can ever find a copy of it, I highly recommend it. It'll be expensive, but it will be more than worth it. "Burning Empires" is one of the best. Hear it!

Industrial music review Great music if you can skip a house payment!
4700 copies worldwide...ridiculous. (Having purchased this album, I don't claim for a second to be above the frenzy.)

Amazingly, nearly all the remixes on these two discs are better than the original versions from "Empires." It's a head-bobbin' blend of EBM stomp and intelligent sing-along melodies.

Disc One:
"Lastlight" gets off to a slow start, then fleshes out nicely with a "Violator"-era Depeche Mode sound. The addition of vocals is nice, since Ronan Harris has a Peter Gabriel charm without the high notes. "Further" is the big winner, with a driving beat and some of VNV's most yearning, thought-provoking lyrics to date. "Legion (janus)" has a snarlier synth sound than the original, and "Saviour (vox)" has a nice computer effect on the vocals. "Legion (anachron) is a soothing, orchestral closer.

Disc Two:
This is the "Standing" single also sold separately. A good band can do multiple versions of a song without inducing sleep. "Standing (still)" is an easy, low-impact dance track. "Standing (motion)" adds some Lords of Acid energy to the mix. "Radius 2" (I don't know how to type "2" as superscript on here) has a lot of warm synth and reminds me of VNV's "Genesis" or a gentler "Solitary." The original cut of "Standing" ends the CD.

"Burning Empires" is full of dancefloor gems, but it's almost a guilty pleasure given the insanity involved in getting your hands on it.

Industrial music review A must have for VNV Nation fans
Although I have been a fan of VNV Nation for less than a year, in that short time I have managed to acquire as many albums and singles as I could of my favorite band. A good friend of mine had mentioned "Burning Empires" to me awhile ago and I have been trying to find a copy of "Burning Empires" that didn't require selling one of my internal organs. She recently surprised me with a burned copy of this EP of remixes to my second favorite VNV album. I was beyond ecstatic to say the very least. I already own the "Standing" remixes which I bought awhile back. Now that I have listened to "Burning Empires", I can definitely see what my friend was raving about. I absolutely loved the previously unreleased song "Further". I was so taken aback by the gorgeous melodies. I was even more taken with the Vox version of "Saviour". I loved the inclusion of vocals on one of my personal favorite VNV instrumentals. Next to "Beloved", I almost wanted to weep. That is how beautiful I found the song to be. I have already heard "Legion (Anachron)" because that same friend burned that song on a goth/industrial compilation for me some time ago. It was a classic. All the songs on "Burning Empires" were awesome. VNV Nation can never disappoint me. They could read the phone book and make it sound interesting.

Industrial music reivew "Don't place faith in human beings..."
I haven't heard this CD is quite some time and so while I was digging around through some of my $hit I found it and realized that I used to LOVE this CD...well, the song "Butterfly Wings" which in my opinion (and seems like quite a few other reviewers) makes this CD. The other songs are great and deeply political, but it's 'Butterfly Wings' that is still the best track here and a HUGE reason to purchase it. Love that song. Sometimes just one track can be worth the $15.00 and 'Butterfly WIngs' is that track.

Industrial music review Deeply Political
I bought this album because of Butterfly Wings and promptly put it on the shelf for a few months. Once I began listening to it again I recognized that it really fit the disillusionment I felt at the time for society and the structure of power in the United States- this is an album that requires, well, concentration.

Not only is the music catchy and borderline hypnotic in its ability to pull you into a mood, the lyrics paint a picture of an America that has the face of a virgin but the soul of a whore. An extremely powerful album.

Albert Speer, Limiter, Lilith/Eve and Trigger for Happiness really stand out but I'd be hard-pressed to name a weak track on this disc.

Industrial music review Who knew?
Who would have thought that a band that good could have been from Tucson, Arizona. Few people know that they formed while going to the University of Arizona film school. They decided to make their own music for one of their film projects. Then Suzie Dunn at local rock station KLPX got ahold of one of the songs and started playing it on the radio. Next thing you knew they had an album and were out touring with the likes of Nitzer Ebb and the Cocteau Twins. It's a shame they broke up.

Industrial music reivew Overrated but not terrible
OK, I know I am going to be slaughtered for this but Wumpscut's morbid opus is not as perfect as everyone says.

First, its good points: Morbid, dark, creepy and atmospheric beyond anything ever written before or since. This album sounds like pure evil and truly freaks you out, is absolutely twisted and is more likely to make you kill yourself than anything I have ever heard before. Trust me, this is a dark record. As for the sounds, the programming manages to sound so incredibly unique that it matches FLA's Epitaph for sounding so unique. The bass synth on Embryodead (title track) sounds somewhere in between a demented carnival organ on acid and a death metal guitar. In fact, the sound is so inimitable that Rudy himself hasnt been able to replicate it (Hes tried).

The bad here is that it has a bipolar tendency. The music is either really slow and ponderously 'dark-n-evil-oh-Im-an-aborted-fetus-demon' ("Is It You?" and later tracks) or it is really fast/noisy/grating/pounding/repetitive/chaotic to the point it loses its melody. Embryodead, War, Slave To Evil fall into this category. The third song, "Down Where We Belong" is so close to suceeding but fails because its so short.

That leaves one song I love (although I like DWWB and Embryodead as well, just not as much)... Golgotha. Yes, I have ripped the album to shreds but this song is perfect all the way through and an absolute Goth/Industrial Anthem that absolutely blows me away. Emotions almost tortured, atmosphere as black as hell and perfect pacing, lush melody, growled vox, beat after seething beat pounding you into submission.... This song is one of the best pieces of Industrial ever written and is absolutely beautiful on all counts.

Industrial music review One of the best that I've heard in the genre
I have CDs from NIN, to Pig (Watts), and all in between, but this is without a doubt one of the best that I have as far as industrial. The CD excels at giving his lyrics the appropriate music to accompany them, which is dark for the most part. I cannot pick a favorite track on this release because all of them equally contribute to the theme. But if I had to say, it would be "Embryodead".

Industrial music review !!! YOU "WILL" GO MAD, TRUST ME !!!
THE ALBUM FOR ME THAT SET ME SPIRALING DOWN AN INDUSTRIAL WARPATH. THIS IS SINGLE HANDEDLY THE BEST INDUSTRIAL ALBUM EVER. NO QUESTION. ANYTHING ELSE BY THESE GUYS CAN ONLY ADD UP TO A FRACTION OF WHAT THIS ALBUM IS. EVERY SONG, ESCPECIALLY SLAVE TO EVIL IS GREAT. SCARY VOX, (NOT AS SCARY AS RAY WATTS, BUT SCARY), RIPPING EERRIE BEATS, AND PROBABLY THE BEST LYRICS OF ANY INDUSTRIAL ALBUM, MAKE THIS ONE MEAN ALBUM READY TO TEAR YOUR SOUL APART WITH BARBED HOOKS. BEST TRACKS: DOWN WHERE WE BELONG, SLAVE TO EVIL, WAR, AND GOLGOTHA.

Industrial music reivew Hard Wired: A darker complex sound to FLA
This album reminded me so much of early on Delerium, dark electronica mixed with deep ambience and a dark vocals. I enjoyed the sounds of this CD and FLA is ever evolving - Leeb & Peterson are moving into a new direction with this intended CD. I just hope they don't go into the pop version that modern Delerium has ventured into. Overall FLA with this album 'Hardwired' has given notice that the genre is alive and kicking and they are at the forefront of industrial gothica. I enjoyed a number of songs but all the songs were listenable from the first to the last.
My favourite songs were 'Mortal' and 'Modus Operandi', these two songs had glimpses of aspects of later albums of FLA would have - songs that one could dance to and easy to remix.

Industrial music review More Great Industrial Music From Leeb & Fulber
I wouldn't call this my favorite FLA cd, but it comes pretty close. This is kind of a mix of FLA style's. It's not as abrasive as Caustic Grip, Not as danceable as TNI or FLAvour of the weak, and not as metal as Millennium. It does however incorporate the styles of all the ones I just mentioned. Take those four Cd's and put them in a blender and you have Hardwired.

Neologic Spasm 10 This is a epic industrial masterpiece. I always wondered why it never got as much respect as I think it deserves. Awesome opening sample. Not as good as the movie samples from Millennium but pretty darn good anyway. This song has everything from dark opera chants, chaotic noise, and a great heavy beat that could get a quadruple amputee to dance.

Paralyzed 10 As good as Neologic Spasm. More danceable, and not as dark. Leeb & Fulber and Leeb & Peterson are genius's. In my opinion they are as good as Key and Goettel of Skinny Puppy. I love both bands equally. The most amazing thing about these guys is the endless variety and quality of there music from FLA, Noise Unit, old Delerium, protech, and Synaesthesia. And those are the ones I have heard so far. They actually have about 20 more Cd's that I have yet to hear. So far everything I have from them is special. Anyways the point I am trying to make in this long winded diatribe is that in this song alone there are more quality hooks, and beats than some bands have in there entire catalogue.

Re-Birth 7.5 Another very solid song. Personally it doesn't grab me like the first two do, but I still love it. Also 7.5 is still a pretty good rating since I grade FLA and Skinny Puppy songs on a curb. So 7.5 here might be a 8 or 9 with most other bands.

Circuitry 9 Very good beats, synth's, and chorus. There is some good guitar in this song, but they are not in the fore-front of the mix. Speaking of guitar's there are a lot of FLA fans who don't like them. I on the other hand being a Rivet/Metal head always thought that Leeb & Fulber should start a side project with Al Jourgenson of Ministry. That would be the best Industrial metal project ever. That's just wishful thinking though.

Mortal 8 Kind of a cool instrumental with perfect sample's from Dawn of the Dead.

Modus Operandi 10 This is truly Leeb at his most Diabolical sounding moment. Everything about this song is t!ts.

Transparent Species 9 Too many things for me to try to describe here. This is probably the most layered and complex song on this Cd.

Bar-code 8.5 I cant figure out what the sample in the beginning is saying. It sounds like one of those backwards messages. This song has a great atmosphere. Very catchy but in a good way.

Condemned 10 This one sounds like it belongs on Millennium. This song brings beauty, anger, and intensity. One of my favorite parts of the Cd.

Infra Red Combat 10 They saved the best for last. This one starts off slow, but it gradually builds into a juggernaut of a industrial anthem. This song is so good that at one time I didn't own this Cd for about a year and I still could play parts of this song in my head. Definitely one of the band's crowning achievements.

If you are already a FLA fan you have this Cd. If you are curious I would say this is a good place to start.

Industrial music review Sci-fi horror in your music is what you need ? Get this !
A hard and heavy FLA album with a bit more of that fear that makes you grip onto your chair than most of their other albums have, except of course 'CAUSTIC GRIP', now that is as cold as it gets, but this is on the other side of the fear scale, as I get a feverish fear feeling from this cd. This album is almost like The Black album was for Metallica, I'm not saying it sounds anything like it, but FLA have grown into a competent beast and at the same time have become a bit too cliched, but this is still an excellent cd with lots of interesting aspects that will make you think "f$#k, this is pretty good music" especially upon first listen. It's quite hard to say this isn't a good listen. There's quite alot of that early 90's sci-fi movies feeling here, which works really well. The BASS lines are incredible, plus there are guitars on this album which I don't like that much, but they don't really bother me either like they did on the 'MILLENIUM' album.

Hard Wired is worth having in your cd collection, but make sure you also get Caustic Grip, Gashed Senses and Crossfire, and Tactical Neural Implant. Total Terror II is a must have if you like simple effective beats with samples and a jumpy bassline, very early 80's typical electro/synth that is fun to hear again and again.

Hard Wired is as the name implies, it is a hard album with wires hooked up to the guitars and synthesizers. The result is a very chaotic ensemble of hard driving syth/bass, haunting samples, and a rhythm guitar that takes the music into a more organic form, but still retaining their purpose which is to accompany the lyrics which are mainly focused around disease, epidemic, war, murder, death, all envisioned in a sci-fi perspective. The vocals on track 6 are amazing. One must hear this album in order to fully appreciate it.

Industrial music reivew If he'd just stop singing
My first experience with Coil was ELpH vs Coil. I really love that disk. Then I tried a couple of the Unnatural History albums, OK. But how do you get from ELpH vs Coil to something like Horse Rotervator? The problem is the same as on Unnatural History III, with Lost Rivers of London, and Scatology. Whenever that guy sings I hate his voice, and on Horse Rotervator he sings ALLOT. It sounds like he's doing a bad impression of Johnny Rotten. It ruins the album for me. If he would just shut up the music itself is pretty good. In any case I consider this the worst Coil album I've heard. On the upside the longer I hold onto it the more it is worth for resale. This is perhaps the only thing I like about this album.

Industrial music review Horse Rotorvator
Horse Rotorvator was an experiment by Coil. If this was released today, it would probably fall comfortably into the industrial genre. However, Coil were one of the original innovators of the industrial genre. Long before Trent Reznor even had aspirations of forming a group, Coil was churning out great records like this... Purely experimental, not trying to be anything specific. And that is what is great about this kind of music. It doesn't try to fit into any category or genre; it doesn't try to sound one way or another. Not to sound cliche, but this is music from the heart. It focuses on being original rather than another carbon copy.

Some people may think that this music sounds outdated, but I would take it over any of the electro Goth groups of today. Nowadays, bands seem to try too hard to fit into a specific category, as if their music is only made for a particular subgroup of people.

The music of Coil is very diverse and artistic. Just when you think you know what this band is all about they turn and go into a completely different direction.

Highly recommended for people interested in experimental music.

Industrial music review Killed to keep the world turning
I seriously doubt that I will ever tire of 'Horse Rotovator'. In my opinion, any 'fan' of industrial music who does not appreciate this masterpiece (or worse, does not own it) is merely a sad, uninformed and tragic waste of Hot Topic couture. I like to call them 'Hot Topic Nihilists'.
Every song on this album (and yes, i am reviewing the VINYL copy, because I am old and was actually around to buy it way back when) pulsates with a vital, thrumming creativity. From the opening strains of "The Anal Staircase" to the diminishing chaos at the tail end of "Ravenous", everything fits, it all works, and it is all tragically compelling.
In fact, during the first hours of the 9/11 fiasco, i was at work trying to get things done, but i couldn't do a thing when i was listening to NPR, so i finally turned to Coil and Godspeed You! Black Emporer in the hopes of getting some perspective. "Horse Rotovator" and "Symbol symbol symbol symbol" (erm, you know, that one...) by Godspeed were the only things that made any sense as everyone else was running lost and adrift. I was adrift, too, but at least i had a soundtrack.

This is an excellent EP, although I wouldn't suggest it for the weak-minded. Some people think he's very weird, and some people say he's on drugs, but believe it or not, it's not true. Anyway this is a greatest hit and it is probably for hardcore fans. Here is my opinion of each track:

1. Lunchbox (Album Version) 5/5
Lunchbox is a greatest hit as I said. It's starts off with a little girl saying "next mother****er's gonna get my metal." It's very funny.

2. Lunchbox (Next Mother****er Remix) 4/5
I gave it 4 out of 5 because it's much like the other song, and it makes me laugh. I wonder who mixes these songs. Although,, listening to it, you could tell it certainly isn't a DJ.

3. Down In The Park 5/5
This is a cover of an old song. It's an excellent b-side that just pops up on this EP. I think it's great that it did, because most of the mixes on this CD are much like the song itself.

4. Lunchbox (Brown Bag Remix) 4/5
It's a good remix, there's no girl in it, the guitars are a little harder, and it's very good. Although it's still a little like the original song.

5. Lunchbox (Metal Remix) 5/5
The guitars are very hard on this, and it's much like the Brown Bag Remix. I like it, but it gets tiring if you heard the other remixes and/or the original version.

6. Lunchbox (Highschool Dropouts) [No Rating]
Same thing for the original review, although this is a censored version of the original song. My guess is that it's something a DJ used to play in front of people under 16.

Overall Grade: 8.5/10 The only thing is the remixes are alike, although it's still worth the money for a die-hard Manson fan!

Industrial music reivew Lunchbox Party!
I can easily why Lunchbox became a single from Portrait of an American Family. It was, and will always be a fun song. Any Manson fan who doesn't find this song occasionally popping up in his or her head, aught to be ashamed of themselves. It's about rebellion, violence and growing up and being a big rock n' roll Star. With this big single we are given the Original Lunchbox, the B-side Down in the Park, 3 Remix's and an Edit. The original is great in itself. Down in the Park is a very cool cover of the weird Gary Numan song. The 3 remix's are all pretty good, but I would say that the best remix is the Next Motherf***er remix. And I can only see the edit used by High school or college DJ's. I'm one of them so it's ok with me. Normally I am annoyed by Edits but this one somehow doesn't tap that little button in by head that says BURN AND DESTROY. Hope this helped. Bye.

Industrial music review This song kicks ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Although people think Marilyn Manson is a freak he's not trying to be like anyone else. This song is pretty old but it really kicks ass!

Industrial music review PURE GENIUS, no questions about it
a reviewer said below, "Cevin is inventive but since Dwayne passed... that synergy / energy aint there anymore."

just for clarification purposes Dwayne does work all over this record. so that goes to show you that this person can't even pay enough attention to read the back of the CD.

anyway, anybody with any real knowledge of music should already know to throw away any preconcieved expectations you might form about cEvin's work.

the man is already lightyears ahead of you.

anybody who thinks that this is anything other than pure genius is probably also wondering why they don't have thumbs.

the track 'Bird' w/ Dwayne could very well be the most beautiful instrumental ever recorded.

Industrial music review AWESOMENESS
Buy this for song 8 and 10. Beautiful music with a kick and some humor, too. What more can you ask for.

Industrial music review Amazing album
This is a cd that is not for everyone. If you like industrial and are open minded to other works... then this is an amazing cd. Listening to this at midnight or early morning will allow you to flow into the world cEvin Key has created. I must recommend this for anyone and everyone... just give it a try and you'll fall in love.

Industrial music review Combat Trance
Really, really, really good EBM album. Very trance-oriented but not to the point of Apoptygma Berzerk and VNV Nation. Funker Vogt still has their harsh military edge, but with much more lush synths and hugely improved bass. If you're the kind of person who likes to tape glow-sticks to their AK-47, throw some reflective paint on your gas mask, wear your fatigue shirt a bit tighter than usual, and dance like you're in Serbia, this album is for you.

Industrial music review This Is E LEEEET!!!!!
Dude, this album completely kicks everyone's ass. It's a masterpiece, wonderfully arranged, mixed, and produced, and the sound is pure Funker Vogt. YEEHAWW. However, there is a problem. Who the hell does the sound clips for you guys at Amazon? These problems are too drastic to ignore:

1. The clip for "Date of Expiration" - Is this a joke? You put in the intro of the song without even playing any of the song???? How the hell do you expect someone to know what the song sounds like if you only play the damned intro? It's just a rising crescendo building to the main part of the song!!!

2. Compulsion - WHAT THE HELL?????? IT'S NOT THE RIGHT SONG!!! HELL, IT'S NOT EVEN THE RIGHT BAND!!!! THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND INEXCUSABLE.

Love the album. Buy 6 copies. Give 5 of them to random people.

Industrial music review great
Very impressive show-an album I liked more than revivor, the remix album from 2003. Funker Vogt's view of the world through their lyrics is expressed, and their war messages are very strong. Prisoners of War, Final Thrill, and History catch my attention the most.

Industrial music reivew not for fans of TKK's earlier work
i was disapointed with this, its not a bad piece of work in itself but it was not what I was looking for. It is a far departure from their first few releases. if you are a fan of the earlier work they did, I would avoid this. If you are looking for expansion, then give it a try!

Industrial music reivew "MLWTTKK", for short.
Though I like their earlier stuff more, this is a solid release from them, and "13 Above The Night" is liked the most by some. Roughly fitting into the techno-industrial genre, this album is full of distorted vocals, driving beats, horns, sex and drug lyrics, and anything else you can imagine. Plus you can dance to it. Overall more like "Lords Of Acid", than say a "Skinny Puppy" kind of sound. Each of their albums are different, but this one pleases like any of the others. It's perfect for a "Disko Fleshpot" who's ready to live the "Badlife".

Industrial music review Kiss the serpent... Thrice.... times twice
TKK...... there's really no words 2 describe thier sound. They are in a realm of thier own and no one will ever be able 2 touch that artsy creativity. This album is extremely psychedelic-industrial with some of Groovie Mann's most adventurous lyrical work ever. "Badlife" is a slow dance groove with an undeniable catch. "Dimentia66".... that song is in a world of it's own... absolutely brialliant. "Blue Buddha" has a great bass line and seductive lyrics. I think this is one of thier best albums ever, and i can't see how any Kult follower could piss on it. U know.... if u dont like this album because it's not seriously hardcore industrial enough for you, then just shut your mouth.. no one wants 2 hear it. "Delicate Terror" and "Final Blindness" let u know that they have not lost thier dance roots and they never will, and that the best thing about TKK in the 1st place is that they are one of a kind... so love it and shake your [but] 2 this amazing art.
