New Wave music review Fun Boy Terry Hall is still at it!
his group after Fun Boy Three was The Colourfield, his first Colourfield album is 'Virgins and Philistines' which is being re-issued & you can get that at AMAZON.CO.UK on the Dec. 13. aside from the Specials, he was also in 'Terry, Blair & Anouchka' their CD is called 'Ultra Modern Nursery Rhymes' and he was in the group 'Vegas' with Dave Stewart

New Wave music review Since you cant get the real thing you have to have this one!
The very gloomy, very british pop genius Terry Hall has made a record that is so heartbreakingly beautiful that I still get chocked every time I listen to it. It is not this record. It is the out of print album sometimes called "Virgins and Phillistines" sometimes called simply Colourfield. However the four songs of that album that is featured here make this an essential buy. The rest is very smart, off-beat and funny pop tunes. It makes a curious match - the intelligent, tounge in cheek and ironic bagatelles of the Fun Boy Three vs the very serious and dark songs of The Colourfield. Also the production is something else, it sounds like liquid gold. Kind of a mix in heaven of Blonde on Blonde and Rick Rubins best work.

New Wave music review Remember the Colourfield?
Terry Hall's career several bands, most notably The Specials and Fun Boy Three. But, in the midst of his singing career, he was in an outstanding band called The Colourfield. The Colourfield's initial release, titles "Virgins and Philistines", is unavailable today. This CD contains some of the best music that has come from a Two-Tone artist. Four tracks from this album are available on this CD.

The rest of the CD is quite good, with a lot of variety. The songs range from Ska to New Wave to Lounge. But, no matter what your preference, you are sure to find something on here you will like! Try it out and see!

New Wave music review criminally neglected
Many bands from liverpool have been feted through the years. one that is sadly not remembered too often are the icicle works. one hit single in the us, two in the uk and then they were forgotten.
bicycle was their second album and was where they hit their stride. it is literate rock music with a connosieurs eye on the past.

mcnab was always a lyrical lyricist, sometimes powerful, sometimes delicate, sometimes political, always honest. the songs are clever but not clever clever like, for example, costello. musically the works are romantic and stirring without ever over-egging the pudding like the waterboys. inside their powerful arrangement the trio maintained a delicate touch.

here is an album without a weak track.long neglected begging to be loved.

New Wave music review For less than the "Small Price of a Bicycle", pick this up!
Very well done rock music that does hold your complete attention from start to finish. It's all here: An Anthem-like, pulse-pounding album complete with touches of melancholy and dashes of mayhem, "Small Price of a Bicycle" certainly delivers on all of these fronts. It may just be The Icicle Works most complete and satisfying collection of songs. That being said, how can you go wrong?

New Wave music review Another Great Album From The Icicle Works
I've been a fan of The Icicle Works since I first heard Birds Fly (Whisper To a Scream) in the early eighties. I believe that they are one of the two most underrated bands to have come from that decade. (The other being the Chameleons.) However, if you have never listened to The Icicle Works don't be put off because they are an eighties band. Their sound is not what one typically thinks of as the "eighties" sound. They are an incredible band whose first three albums are a treat for the ears. From the raw power of their self titled debut, to their third album, and what I believe was their masterpiece, If You Want To Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song, this band never disappoints.

The Icicle Works second album, The Small Price Of A Bicycle, is another gem. It starts off with the unbelievably great Hollow Horse, one of their best songs ever, and ends with the emotionally powerful Conscience Of Kings. But that's not all. In between these two songs are eight unforgettable songs. Songs that I keep singing to myself long after the music has stopped. The Small Price Of A Bicycle creates its own atmosphere and maintains it throughout. This is an exquisite album and one that any Icicle Works fan will want to have in their collection.

New Wave music review too delicious
true hiphop. At it's finest. Music to make love by.

New Wave music review Real Hip-Hop 2000 ( and beyond )
Commercial hip-hop, trash to say the least! Mood shows us the state of the world in the next mellenium, and opens up the gates of spirtualtity that were thought to be only true in legends. But alas, the legendary Cincy trio leads the battalion of new school artists soon to eclipse the wack commercialization. You've been warned...

New Wave music review A Must Have...
A rare gem I didn't expect to see on CD. I have loved this record since I found it in a used record store in Poughkeepsie in the 80's. Early Elvis the C, Nick Lowe, Dave Edumunds, Wreckless Eric...All recorded live in clubs with real drunk fans out for a good time.

New Wave music review yo
This is a wonderfully eccentric, thrilling album. All have unique style except for the boring Larry Wallis, Police Car. Note: Rolling Stone panned it in 1977, except for Larry Wallis. And they always act like they were always so cool..... We must have more Wreckless Eric! Bring his stuff out on CD.

PS: Clash? since when is there clash on this CD?

New Wave music review A True Punk Classic--Too Often IGNORED!
Okay. I confess I love this album and saw NOTHING about it here on amazon. Protest the lack of info! Every punk worth his or her safety pins should own this classic. It has a heartbreakingly lovely version of the young and angry Elvis Costello singing Burt Bacharach--more honest and also a little meaner than on his other more recent album. Lots of fun punk stuff: Ian Drury and The Blockheads doing Sex and Drugs and Rock & Roll, and the Austin Powers of Punk, Wreckless Eric with great big power pop songs. Nick Lowe, too. Much more. Great fun. Happy bouncy punk with a streak of explosive noise and madness. Kind of a classic. A great party album. Looking back (it's almost 20 years old) it seems sweet, insane, and wonderfully optimistic about music in the post-disco era.

You cannot go wrong. Rock on!

New Wave music review Healing/Hearing
I want to confirm what others have noted here - listening to "Stone Cottage" is a transcendentally calming experience. It has been especially helpful in the context of my profession as a school counselor at a K-12 private school. Students of all ages are instantly soothed by the music, which I often have playing in the background when they come to talk. The album flows with such ease and grace that there is no moment when it interrupts the rhythm of students' expression, but instead provides an ambience of peacefulness and healing which facilitates students' disclosure and discussion. I highly recommend Ms. Naccarato's music both personally and professionally.

New Wave music review A female George Winston
I agree with the fan from Houston. This is an excellent piano solo album. I remember G. Winston's "Autumn" recording being considered the best music for romance. "Stone Cottage" is just as deserving; playing "Autumn" for every romantic encounter gets very boring, after all. Too much comparison with Winston though is dangerous; Ms. Naccarato has her own style--fairly uncomplicated, with an emphasis on the melodic. The pieces are tone poems, and quite easily call up mental images to accompany the tunes. This album is excellent for accompanying a romantic (or any!) dinner, or while reading or relaxing. It's a lying-in-a-hammock-under-a-shade-tree-with-a-glass-of-lemonade kind of album. I highly recommend it.

New Wave music review Wonderfully relaxing if you work in a stressful job.
This is one of the best piano solos that I have heard in a long time. I like to listen to it in the car on the way home from work and sometimes on a weekend morning while drinking coffee and reading the newspaper. All of the pieces have a very calming effect. I recommend this selection to anyone who has a stressful job or is in a reflective mood and just wants to relax.

New Wave music review Oh-wah-oh-waho-waho-waho-ah waho-ah!
There is nothing wrong whatsoever with liking the song Tarzan Boy by Baltimora. It is a good song. And the great thing is that now I am a man of leisure, so to speak, I get to sit around listening to it all day! Two thumbs up.

New Wave music review This CD is awesome!!!!!!!
If you lived back in the 80's you would know, this song was definitely the best 80's song out there, what i think is the best part of the song is, is the "oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh" part, the beat is good and other parts of the song as well, i can't really think why anyone would hate this song, i recommend this cd, but amazon says they don't carry it right now.

New Wave music review OH MAN!!
I was just a kid, about 8 years old when I first heard this song in Mexico, I had no idea what the guy was saying at the time and I kept singing along "changoline" instead of Jungle life but it was all good and that song was a part of my child hood and I get the teary eye from wonderful memories, this song was known all over the world, I'm still a big fan of 80's music even though I was a kid on that decade, 80's music I think was more fun than the ones today, that's what it was, all out fun music, now it's all about violence, times change ofcourse but 80's music will always be played may be not on the radio but in some house somewhere.

New Wave music review TODAY ALBANY, TOMORROW THE WORLD!!!
Let the unwashed, mindless musical hordes gorge themselves on the empty sounds of Britney and her evil ilk. For me, BLOTTO is one of the great bands of the age. If you fail to buy this CD your life will be filled with sorrow, your friends will stop returning your phone calls, and your breath will begin to stink. Don't let these horrid things come to pass! Support BLOTTO and but this fab CD. It's worth the price just for the live version of "My Baby's the Star of A Driver's Ed Movie."

I pray that one day, BLOTTO will rise phoenix-like from the ashes and march upon the world to take up their rightful place at the head of the world's musical table.

God Bless Cheese!

Viva la Weirdaloution!!!

New Wave music review Worth the Wait!
I've been waiting 18 years for this one! I've whined to anyone who would listen that Blotto had enough material for another album...certainly it was recorded at some point. Well, here it is, all the Blotto never-before-released originals that I remember so fondly from my college days. I don't know why these guys never made it big... We'll miss you, Cheese.

New Wave music review One "New" song, and a bunch of great old ones
Well here is the "rest" of the Blotto treasure chest! If you know who Blotto is then you want this CD! Many of the cuts are "Live" so you can close your eyes and relive the past for a few minutes. For those of you that never saw them live that's too bad... you missed out on all of the FUN! For someone not familiar with just who (what?) Blotto is I would recommend they buy the "Collected Works" CD first (you will be back for this one though !) Russ near Deeeetroit

New Wave music review Ruder Than You
Still have the original LP!!!! Great ska compolation, nothing like the original SKA Era.

New Wave music review Simply Smashing Pop-Reggae
This Are Two Tone is the summary disk put out by the record company that goes by that name. It's all of the hits by famous groups of that time period.

The music is hard to explain. Some would say "ska", or others "pop-reggae." I say it's just plain good!

There are happy songs, there are sad songs. But all of them are fast, jumping songs. Serious mood-music.

New Wave music review awesome...
highly reccommended ( if i spelt that right) for new comers into the "rude girl"/"rude boy" scene...or if you just flat out like this type of music. it has great awesome bands from the 2tone era and also has the duet with rhoda dakar and the specials aka. a must for ska enjoyers around! cheers!

Understand from the get-go that label retrospectives are spotty affairs. Rare is the label that's free of stiffs, and Stiff Records' raison d'état was to serve as a refuge for castoffs, including a fair share of flaccid acts. The off-center likes of Nick Lowe (having recently fleed the misbegotten Brinsley Schwarz), Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric, Larry Wallis, and a very young Elvis Costello found a home with Stiff in the '70s. It wasn't a punk label, though it boasted the Damned; it wasn't a ska imprint, though Madness and Desmond Dekker recorded for the company; it wasn't a power-pop or pub-rock haven, though a number of Stiff's leading lights (Dury, Lowe, Costello, Dr. Feelgood, Dave Edmunds) fell into those categories. And it wasn't terribly long-lived. This imaginatively designed four-disc overview definitely loses momentum toward the end, but there's a humble enchantment to an overwhelming percentage of tracks here from label mainstays, the semiacclaimed (Devo, Graham Parker, Lene Lovich, the Pogues), and uncelebrated (Mickey Jupp, Mick Farren, Jona Lewie). -- Steven Stolder
Average review score: New Wave music reivew

New Wave music reivew If they're dead we'll sign 'em
Disc 1 & 2 are the whole reason to buy this, with a few cuts from disc 3 thrown in as a bonus. Probably more economical to have your old 45 RPM versions converted to CD (and keep those goofy quips engraved in each record's blank space next to the label).

New Wave music review Action Packed
Stiff is one of those wacky labels that always seemed to sneak by just under the pop radar.

I received this set as a gift a few years ago, and couldn't be happier about it. This collection is so full of unknown bits of whimsy and little-known cuts by more popular artist that it starts to become more of a treasure chest than a "best of."

Ian Drury of "Sex and Drugs and Rock & Roll" fame appears as vocals on several other cuts including "Kitchen at Parties." This collection is full of simmilar fun little nuggets.

So much of the "alternative" music scene that was largely contained by British borders seems to be archived here, and it's fun to tap into it. Americans (such as myself) who always thought that the band Madness was largely a one hit wonder will be surprised by the spastic "Baggy Trousers," a song I enjoyed so much I have purchased several Madness CDs since hearing it.

While Elvis Costello originally got his start on Stiff, he has only one song here - probably a god thing, as we all have a good idea what he sounds like - leaving more room for the lesser known artists of Stiff.

There is a charming wackiness to this collection and to the whole Stiff attitude. This is a great collection for exploring what the Brits were doing while we tollerated Dexy's Midnight Runners.

Oh! Special bonus: There is a fabulous (FABULOUS) cut of Desmond Dekker's "Isrealites" on disc three. This along merits purchasing this set.

New Wave music review Instantly enjoyable.
Strange...I remember trying to search for this boxed set earlier in the year and coming up with nil for my efforts. Then, after accidentally finding it in a New York record store and acquiring it right away, I find it on here. Must be my mind playing tricks on me.

In any case, I'm not old enough to have lived through the era from which these songs sprung, but the appeal of the music easily traverses the generation gap. I haven't even yet explored all of this set and it's already been some of the most fun listening experiences I've had while listening to "older music": Elvis Costello, The Belle Stars, Nick Lowe, Kirsty MacColl...and personal favourite, spunky popster Rachel Sweet. Vivacious and highly entertaining. My only complaint is that the liner notes are somewhat flimsy. Though full of the kind of tongue-in-cheek humour that, apparently, Stiff Records was famous for, the result of the non-journalistic approach is that there's very little real information on the music, the history, the label, and the context, hidden by the cheeky writing and witticisms. I for one would've liked some more detached, professional journalism to inform me of the significance of this music such as in that Amplifier article I had read (which led me to look for this boxed set in the first place). So on the packaging front, much is left to be desired. But the music is uniquely appealing, a world of its own.
