New Wave music review A MASTERPIECE--REALLY
If you are looking to buy your first MAGAZINE cd, some reviewers on Amazon will tell you to get THE CORRECT USE OF SOAP first because it's the most "accessible." My recommendation is: Start with the best--SECONDHAND DAYLIGHT. Get REAL LIFE next. Try THE CORRECT USE OF SOAP third. As for the accessibility issue--it's true; I didn't particularly like SECONDHAND DAYLIGHT the first time I heard it. It's as though my brain could not immediately process its awesome luminosity. But after a few more listens, its brilliance started shining through. Is it goth? Is it punk? Comparing this album to anything else is foolish and might even be misleading, but I'm going to throw some band names out that are in the ballpark: Bauhaus, Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Damned, David Bowie (but harder and darker), Christian Death, Radiohead, Iggy and the Stooges, New York Dolls, Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground, early Roxy Music, early Eno. In any case, this cd takes you all the way into outerspace. Get ready for a wild ride.

New Wave music review What years they wuz
As an elder punker/post-punker it gladdens my heart to see this album getting five stars consistently from a newer generation. You young'uns got good taste. This band's first two LPs were a revelation.

I've been reading a great book "Kill your Idols"--reviews of old and moldy "classics" where each jem is trashed by a Gen X or Y type. Dang good! I always thought something horrible was going on where the music press (even the allegedly hip music press) would go all googie about some trendy tripe (Frankie Goes to Hollywood on the cover) and gloss over bands like Magazine. Frequently even more astounding is Wire--the band responsible for at least five of my Top Twenty songs. Don't overlook early Simple Minds, before they went pop.

New Wave music review Magazine fans: check out Luxuria
And I would just like to add that fans of Magazine and Howard DeVoto should definitely check out Luxuria's 1990 album, "Beast Box."

Luxuria is the band DeVoto formed after Magazine, and it has all the biting, hard-edged, and experimental traits of the early, excellent Magazine, with even more of DeVoto's satiric, sardonic wit. Call them Magazine II. Highly recommended.

This is one of the greatest statements of the early days of American punk rock. Boston-based Mission of Burma created an intense, somewhat claustrophobic sound that was based neither on speed nor brevity. They bash and flail on their instruments, and the music is dense (including early tape manipulations), but the songs are intelligent and captivating. "Secrets" unfolds into directed chaos with an anthemic feel; "Trem Two" also has a great sense of dynamics. Several band members contribute songs, which also keeps the album engaging. Released in 1982 but still fresh. --Robert Gordon

New Wave music reivew Better than expected
I was pleasantly surprised at how good this album was. Every song has its own hook, its own sound. Not all songs are fast and hard (although the ones that are, are good). Good melodies and impassioned singing. One of the best albums of the early '80s.

New Wave music review I Bought It Way Back When
I don't know where I first heard Mission of Burma, but it was pretty early on in their existence, because I had all their records AS records. They were a favorite right away, and ranked up with The Fall, Flipper and Wire's album "Pink Flag" as the favorite music of my late teen and early 20's years.

All that stuff still holds up (for me at least) all these years later. Mission of Burma was a strange case because back then (and even now) I was the only person I knew who had ever heard of them, and it's still a mystery to me where I latched on to this group. This was (I believe) their only full scale in the studio album, signals, calls and marches being more of an EP and their other album of the time (Horrible Truth, etc.) being a live record. I never saw them live or anything, but I had these records back then, listened to them constanlty and have them now as CD's. If your taste runs to this type of music, or even what in the last decade has come to be called "alternative", try out Mission of Burma and find out what Alternative Music was like when you couldn't hear it on any commercial radio station, and you had to go down into some basement record store on Prince St. in Manhattan in order to buy the VINYL records.

New Wave music review This is an essential for any music collection
Mission of Burma is without a doubt one of the most exciting, intense, cerebral, inticing, and genius groups to ever live. This disc is proof of that. Songs like "Trem Two" and "Weatherbox" show off the groups' more avant-garde leanings, whereas gems like "Mica" and "That's How I Escaped my Certain Fate" are pure, unpretentious art punk. The range of musical diversity in this one album is absolutely mind-blowing. "Vs." was originally released in 1982 and it sounds as if it could have been recorded today. A truly remarkable feat in independent music by 1982's or 2004's standards. My advice: buy this album and study it. Listen to it many, many, many times for not only the songs, but the song structures, as they are the most exciting part of any Burma song. I truly believe that no one has been able to top Burma yet, and no one ever will be able to for that matter. And it is an absolute miracle that they reunited and are playing live once again. It almost makes me believe that there is a god if such a talented band could join forces again after a 22-year hiatus. So listen, learn, and rock out as hard as you possibly can because life is too short to listen to watered-down "punk rock" like Blink 182 or NOFX. If you want the real deal, the real gritty in-your-face intelligent kind of stuff, then you have come to the right place.

New Wave music review Motorheads best
This is Motorhead's best known record and it is a total classic. Good music never sounds dated and there's still no band out there today that can do this kind of music the way Motorhead does it. There's a few bonus tracks on it too, notably the track Please Don't Touch which they did with Girlschool.

New Wave music review The Only Card I Need is The ACE OF SPADES
This Cd is without Question a Hard Rocking Tour-De-Force, Pulverizing, Menacing, Thrashing, Invigorating. After Listening You will feel like Beating the Hell out of Somebody. The CD begins with the Locomotive "Ace of Spades" and doesn't let up, it is pointless to continue listing each Track because ALL of them Fucckking Rock! Even the Bonus Songs with Girlschool Rip it up...Motorhead makes ACDC sound like Christopher Cross....

New Wave music review Pioneers
This band is one of the best bands of all time. Their not overrated and not overhyped. They are legends. And this album proves it. MotorHead made metal ok to play fast which is how thrash metal got started. The influence of this band continues on. Bands like Metallica, Anthrax, and others got their start by listining to this band. Long Live the Legends of Speed Metal.

New Wave music review Absolutely amazing soundtrack @}->---
This is definately one of the best - if not the best - soundtracks in the history of movie soundtracks. You cannot help but love it. It's so amazing. Yes it has that 80's feel, but to me it is timeless. I was 10 when this came out and I love it now even to this day. Manic, What A Feeling, Lady Lady Lady and Imagination are brilliant songs. Gloria was also in the movie but not on the cd. Well at least we got one fantastic song from the late great Laura Brannigan on here (Imagination).
I have friends younger than myself who haven't seen the movie yet (they think it's so old) but they love this music. I think it has such a wide appeal that you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't like it. If you don't already own this, go out now and get it. You'll love it.

New Wave music review The Lexicon Of Love was a bright spot in the eighties
This album came onto the scene in 1982.I was a junior in high school. After LoverBoy spread itself all over the air waves a band from Britian calling themselves ABC released The Look Of Love and Poison Arrow on MTV.It was a gtoup mixing Disco,Dance,Blues,Rock and a little Jazz while adding string textures. Most of the groups were into that mixing sounds and textures and some worked while others failed.Styx tried it with Mr Roboto and bombed! Never the less its kinda like a bad commercial,ya never forget it.Every song on this album is great to good and never lets up.Its definately a party album for us to remember the eighties rightly for that was a time period I could look back on and say. "Yep gotta love the Eighties."

New Wave music review The Look Of Perfection...
Why must music sound this good?! This album breaks my heart it sounds so good! I don't understand it!!! How can something look shinier than the shiniest tinsel and still have blood coursing thru it's veins. I wanna do my hair and put my best pout on, meet her by the cigarette machine, have her say she loves me then break my heart, i wanna strut, and still believe in love...

If the Beatles were the soundtrack to ur very thoughts in the 60's ,then this was one of those albums that was the soundtrack to going out, falling inlove and breaking up in the 80's.
Where Bowie failed, Martin Fry and Co. succeeded brilliantly with this album in the 80's, with just the right mix of high drama and blue-eyed soul. I imagine them both giving each other the nod...

With all the garbage clogging up the airwaves and leaving me as a Musician/Producer positively jaded and weary in the 21st Century, discovering this album again is like Vicks Vapour Rub to my senses. These moments r what make Pop great! Provocative, Dynamic, Exciting, Dangerous...
There r some bands the likes of 'Elefant' among others who r responsible for some kool moments too, and be it unfair to compare such, but baby this is what ur aiming for! This is the bench-mark...

If ur gonna do 80's retro, do it right for crying out loud!
Do ur research, give me the magic!
These moments r what made u wanna queue in the rain @ the band's gigs, r what made u wanna put their posters up on ur wall, r what made u walk to save ur dosh instead of taking the bus so u could by that album in the first place!

I actually gave this 6 stars.
U can't see the 6th one, but u can definitely feel it can't u :)

New Wave music review I was tempted to put 4 stars....
... but who am Ikidding, this album is simply prefection, and in future years will be looked on as a Beethovens 5th or Handels Messiah. Its a "Woodface", a "Nevermind" , one of those albums that is note perfect from start to finish.. that has you standing on top of your car singing, if James Bond was an album, he would be this one. I listended to it for the first time in years last week driving across Ireland and it was just as wonderful as when I bought it in 1982... if you have been in love, are in love, want to be in love, want to be a pop star, want to be a movie star.. buy this album.

nina at her best. this cd brings me back to the days of my youth.those punk/new wave days of my youth.highly recomended for people who like the same. you will not be disapointed.passed this cd on to my 17 year old daughter, who gives it a thumbs up seal of approval. what better review for a cd is there than that?

New Wave music review There's no one like Nina Hagen
In 1983, Born in XIXAX was the rawest most outrageous yet highly danceable tune in the L.A. New Wave/Punk club scene. And it still rocks like nothing else. Nina Hagen is a sublime goddess of the experimental. Not all of the music on the CD is as accessible as XIXAX, but it's highly educational and mind expanding. Go for it!

New Wave music reivew The Swing
Recently "rediscovered" this great band and was looking to find some of their earlier work. This is classic INXS. Can't miss this one.

New Wave music reivew It never gets old.
On a day that many might get the new "Switch" disc, I suggest "The Swing" to everyone. Before they released the world-dominating "Kick", they put out three excellent albums, and this is one of them. The "Shabooh-Thieves" era was awesome, and many of these songs are the reason why. If you've only heard "Original Sin", I promise every other track on here is just as good. "I Send A Message", "Johnson's Aeroplane", and the title track are primo INXS. And the last songs are all as great as the first ones. Again, if you're a fan of any INXS, especially the earlier years, "The Swing" hits it out of the ball-park. Michael can never be replaced.

New Wave music review The Best INXS CD
I grew up during their heyday (graduated highschool in 1985) and The Swing is...by far...their best CD.

Cheap Trick's second album (and second of '77!) doesn't exactly pick up where its classic, hard-edged debut left off; it was the "Power" and this is the "Pop." Their workaholic gigs as an unsigned Midwest bar band in the mid-'70s left them with an impressive backlog of original material, another batch of which forms the core of In Color. Though the band disdained producer Tom Werman's bubblegum-flavored touches, it was indeed the kinder, gentler Cheap Trick that Japanese audiences first took to their hearts at Budokan, with the rest of the world soon to follow. That approach is best exemplified by the evergreen "I Want You to Want Me" (which didn't become a hit until Live at Budokan), here dolled up with a Fats Domino-flavored piano break. While Werman's poppy approach dilutes the band's wall-of-noise live bent, it also underscores their impressive individual musical talents: Rick Nielsen's manic riffing on "Big Eyes" and the album's other retro-burner, "Clock Strikes Ten"; Robin Zander's vocal multiple-personalities that range from the suicidal angst of "Downed" (surely a favorite of Trick admirer Kurt Cobain) through the sweet anticipation of "I Want You" to the world-weariness of "So Good to See You"; and the rhythm section of Tom Petersson and Bun E. Carlos anchoring everything (especially the delicious "Southern Girls") with a flawless wallop. This expanded edition features significantly upgraded audio quality, new notes and photos, and five bonus tracks: the unpredictable instrumental B-Side "Oh Boy"; 1975 demos of "Southern Girls" and the anthemic "Come On, Come On" that ably display just the "before" side of the producer argument; and live versions of "You're All Talk" and longtime show closer "Goodnight" recorded at L.A.'s Whiskey in 1977. No sophomore jinx here. --Jerry McCulley

New Wave music review Their Best
What can anyone say about this album that hasn't already been said. It's CT's best. I can't offer any further insight to the greatness of this album that hasn't been said a thousand times before.
The original is brilliant from start to finish. Having said that though, it perhaps is a bit poppy. Doesn't have the rock of their other albums from that era, but it's a nice change.
The bonus songs here are nice additions.
Southern Girls is ranks in their best top 3 songs.
The weakest track for me has always been Clock Strikes Ten - it only scores 4/5!! Even on Budokan it's always been a lesser track for me.

I can't wait to hear the re-recorded version the boys did recently. It's sure to have the rock element this sometimes lacks. Hopefully they release it soon.

As mentioned, ranks up the very top of their albums. Next Position Please follows.

New Wave music review Pure POWER POP!
Juxtapose this with dreck that was around in 70's (REO/STYX/Boston), 'In Color' is a pure power pop masterpiece.

It avoids the lunk-headed 'hard rock' cliches of the 70's.

"Come On, Come On" is one of their best tunes.

New Wave music review Worth it for the bonus "unreleased" b side insturmental all by itself!
If you are reading this you are probably over 40 and heard some of Cheap Trick's stuff in your carousing youthful prime heyday. The disc is a great combo of power pop and AOR metal. I re-bought it after hearing "Big Eyes" on Sirius Sat. radio's "The Vault" channel. (Had the vinyl way back when) I loved the insturmental track, (and the other bonus tracks are cool also.) My faves: "so good to see you", "clock strikes ten", and of course ..."hello there"
Another major selling point to me as a kid at the department store was the back side of the cover. On the front you have Robin & Tom, all pretty boys with the "rock star life" pose etc., but what sold me was the back cover (for those who have not seen it) called "and in black & white" with a B&W pic of Rick and Bun on mo-peds (I think they are mo-peds!) that picture is the one that made this teenaged pimple hormone nerd IDENTIFY with these guys. And a fan from then on!

Disc two includes Louis Armstrong's lovely "We Have All the Time in the World," as well as a nice collection of rarities (Anthony Newley's demo of "Goldfinger"), lesser-known orchestral cuts from Goldfinger and Thunderball, and radio ads for You Only Live Twice, Thunderball, and Live & Let Die. The perfect accompaniment for a martini built for two. Shaken not stirred, of course! --Dan Epstein

New Wave music reivew Not a true James Bond theme songs compilation
This compilation is far inferior to the awesome collection in the album "Best of 007 Bond: James Bond" 40th Anniversary Edition, which on one single CD has 22 songs, including all the beloved theme songs we grew up (and old) with. That set, also available here on Amazon, costs less than half of this POS here, which is expensive and filled with crappy songs. Get the other album.

New Wave music review A "GEM" you can hardly find in any other collection
This CD is not just for the fans of James Bond, but for the fans of Louis Armstrong also. It contains the song "All the time in the world" a song which, no matter how much I have looked for in Satchmo's collections, it is just impossible to find. This song is way better than the "What a wonderful world" maybe because it was not played as much on the radio and on TV. Besides, the lyrics, the melody, and of course Satchmo's voice are unique. The CD really brings to mind action scenes from the James Bond movies. Many of them remind also James' success with women.
If you like soundtracks you should get this CD. If you like James Bond this CD is a must.

IF YOU ARE LOUIS ARMSTRONG FAN YOU SHOULD ALREADY HAVE THIS CD.

New Wave music review "007 is here, sir!"
....as Lois Maxwell quoted as Miss Moneypenny in DR. NO the very first James Bond film adventure. This 2-disc set is a must for any major James Bond film fan. Disc 1 contains the opening theme songs to all the first 16 films from DR. NO to LICENCE TO KILL. The songs were recorded in December 1992 and they all sound fantastic!

Disc 2 contains rare outtakes and unrealesed music ranging from John Barry's composed "James Bond Theme" and "007", along with many missing music from GOLDFINGER, the THUNDERBALL suite, and "Mr. Kiss-Kiss Bang Bang" both the Dionne Warwick and Shirley Bassey version. Anthony Newley's version of GOLDFINGER is in no way as great as Shirley Bassey's version however.

The only let-down is it doesn't contain the music to the Pierce Brosnan films. Of course this album was released in 1992, three years before GOLDENEYE was released. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it! You will be glad you did, and the linear notes inside are very nice.
