Throughout the early 1980s, INXS kept threatening to go big league, and with 1987's Kick they broke wide open, sENDing a sharp quartet of singles--"New Sensation," "Devil Inside," "Need You Tonight," and the shimmering ballad "Never Tear Us Apart"--right to the charts. The rest of Kick, especially the strutting "Guns in the Sky" and the groovy "Wild Life," is of similar quality; all of it is marked by the band's Stones-y guitars and angular, funk-tinged rhythms. Vocalist Michael Hutchence's MTV good looks and Aretha-meets-Aerosmith swagger completed the musical equation for both the girls and the boys. One of the decade's great live bands, too. --Michael Ruby

New Wave music reivew Made me a fan for life....
Though I first heard INXS in the early 80's with "The One Thing, then a few years later with "What You Need" and liked what I heard, this was the album that had me hooked on INXS, not to mention put them on the map, and rightly so. It is full of great songs, though my favorites are Guns in the Sky, New Sensation, Mediate, Calling All Nations, Wild Life and one of my all time favorite INXS songs, The Loved One, which is the song that really hooked me. I am so glad that they remade it, it is great from start to finish, I could listen to it over and over and not tire of it. Of course, some of their most famous songs are on this CD, Devil Inside, Need You Tonight and Never Tear Us Apart, also great songs. The videos for these songs are equally as good and they also had great success with them. Most people now label INXS as has beens, not me. This is one of their great albums though the ones preceding and following it are great as well. As much as I miss Michael Hutchence they now have a new lead singer, JD, and I sincerely hope that they will have success again as all they want to do is play their music. I am going to see them in concert in February and I can hardly wait! Anyway, if you don't have this one already, I recommend it to any INXS fan who doesn't have it though I doubt there is one, or anyone who likes good 80's music.

New Wave music reivew INXS sets the template for the 90's
Call Kick what you will, a landmark album, a definitive album, it certainly is all that. This along with 'Appetite For Destruction' provided a glimpse of the DIY musical revolution that was about to take place in the early 90's. Before Kick, INXS casually rode the crest of synth-tinged rock, successful but nothing exceptional. Kick captured the essence of a soon-to-be musical shift, music with attitude, sexuality, and non-conformist brashness...with the seductive Micheal Hutchence fronting a band of suave renegades. Alot of music in the 80's was about escapism and over-the-top hoopla, Kick signaled that the party was about to end. The album itself is a blend of shimmering guitars, funk-driven rhythms, glossed-over by keyboards, while fronted by a slinky Jim Morrison type in Hutchence. Yet it's the guitar-percussion pairing that gives Kick it's amazing bite, swagger, and groove (Need You Tonight, New Sensation, Wild Life, Mediate, Guns In The Sky) I remember when this album first came out. I also remember the sense of lure and nastiness hearing these songs, how I was captivated seeing Micheal Hutchence beckon 'Slide over here' in Need You Tonight. If anything can come out of the death of Micheal Hutchence, Kick was the musical zeitgeist, one of the the turning-points, which paved the way for a generation to slide-over to the next decade.

New Wave music review never one to be kicked
inxs lead by the leather and hips god michael hutchence
andrew farris as co songwriter..inxs could do no wrong in my opipion and this album only succeeds my opipion of their great ablity to write catchy as hell melodies and easy to the ear lyrics that some might call childish but there simple and affective..
inxs were a great pop rock punk band whom early albums got the world ready for this corker of an album
from the opening track "guns in the sky" and single also they made a great video were they were walking through a corrider and hutchence swagger and sexual appeal oozed like oxygen
the other singles the devil inside "never tear us apart"
"need you tonight" and "meditate" were they took a page out of bob dylan's book for the video

i've loved every single album inxs has put out..
this being in the top three with "listen like thieves"
and "elagantly wasted"

after this album inxs went on to make under-rated classic albums one being the follow up "x" and "full moon dirty heart"
inxs were great for the dance beats and rock riffs..with a swaggering golden god as the vocalist

New Wave music review One of the Top 10
The lyrics are etched in my mind along with the melodies. There are few then and fewer now that can match Tonio K's wit and observation of life. Each song stands on its own -- not one runt in the whole pack. Like Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, the topics are timeless: lost love, hypocrisy, greed, power abuse and good ol' twisted side of man...just add a dash of raw verve and grab-your-throat intensity. Just imagine if Tonio K offered his own version of the National Anthem...

I bought this LP in 1978 because Steve Simels reviewed it as the greatest rock and roll album of all time and remember Mr. Krikorian's response well. I proceeded to listen to James Brown's Live at The Apollo... I agree with Simels. I still have the original copy and CD as well as his next excellent LP, Amerika.

New Wave music review Key Album in Rock History
Bought this album on release way too long ago. It's a definite classic.Rates right up there with Pere Ubu's Modern Dance and the Stranglers' and Devo's first albums. Howard Devoto makes like a sneering Peter Hamill and delivers the goods with searingly sung ,amusingly cynical lyrics and a precision- balanced band . All the players are incredible. My personal fave tracks "Burst" -great guitar. "Motorcade" -international intrigue-exactly."Real Life"-"So this is real life-Your telling me"Great. Magazine was way ahead of their time and was probably lost in the New Wave "image above substance" blight that took over shortly after this masterpiece was produced.

New Wave music review 77' PUNK? DANCE PUNK? POST PUNK? NAH!
All of these particular labels don't do justice to this BUZZCOCKS offshoot. I wouldn't necessarily call this new wave as I've heard them mentioned as. Art punk might be the closest thing here. Howard has angry/cynical sneer in his singing while the band plays these gloomy danceable punk songs. Yes, there is a synthesizer here but don't be scared! Upon buying and playing the album the first time around I found myself playing SHOT BY BOTH SIDES repeatedly. About my third time through I really started to dig on the whole album. There is a bit of a two-tone ska bounce to alot of the songs MY TULPA, GREAT BEAUTICIAN IN THE SKY. SHOT BY BOTH SIDES is a steady driving punk number (the song that convinced me to buy the album.) REAL LIFE and 'MOTORCADE' have a international espionage sneakiness about them. MAGAZINE redefine punk in the tradition of the emotionally detached VELVET UNDERGROUND and even PINK FLOYD's psychedelic flowing soundscapes.

New Wave music review Over 25 years and still strong
I've been listening to this band since the late Seventies and I can safely say if you pick this up you'll probably be listening to them a quarter century from now. It's great to read all these positive reviews from the younger generation; the music travels well. Ignore me, read the other reviews, they're dead on.

I bought this album the same day I bought my first Wire LP. Wot a day that wuz! If that band or this one is news to you then jump at them, it could change your life. Spoiled me rotten.

Before Jackson decided he was an artiste and began experimenting with big-band swing and classical music, he was a snotty punk who looked at other people's relationships with a jaundiced eye. His 1979 debut contains several of his best-known hits--"Sunday Papers," "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" and "Fools in Love," plus under-recognized classics like "Baby Stick Around." The simple four-man rock & roll sound suits Jackson's young voice perfectly, and the songs have a pop snap that Jackson unfortunately abandoned as his career progressed. --Steve Knopper

New Wave music reivew you can't beat this for a buck...
I've really gotten my money's worth from Joe Jackson. I obtained my first copy of 'Look Sharp!' in 1979 when a local FM radio station aired the disc seamlessly as their feature album one Sunday evening. My cassette recorder happened to be running at the time. I was quite surprised at the sustained appeal and energy that flowed from the recording. Now I've pick up the same excellent set of tracks for a buck plus delivery fees. Sorry, Joe. If it makes you feel better, I plunked down real cash for a vinyl of your second release 'I'm the Man'. If you're not familiar with the 'Look Sharp!', don't let the marked-down price deceive you... it's quality exceeds that of CD's selling for ten times the price.

This album strikes me as 'Meet the Beatles' in 'post-punk', New Wave guise, albeit with some cussing and a more blatant use of sexual imagery. The chord progressions are simplistic and catchy, and the lyrical content, while at times quite witty, is also quite elementary. Nothing wrong with that. It renders this a Friday afternoon album... no deep thinking required.

Jackson is at his best when he rocks his hardest, and this quick collection (the entire disc tallies just under 37 minutes) of 11 tracks doesn't disappoint in that regard. Leading the way is the brisk opener, 'One More Time', with its crisp guitar riff, complements of Gary Sanford. The tempo retreats just a bit for the next two numbers, but pleasantly so as 'Sunday Papers' and the only charting song from the disc, 'Is She Really Going Out With Him' (topping out at number 21 in 1979) establish that the band can wing a waltz as well as wail. 'Happy Loving Couples' builds up steam for the locomotive that breaks loose in the blistering 'Throw It Away', the boppin' 'Baby Stick Around' with its '50ish chorus, and the edgy title-track.

The weakest track in the set, 'Fools In Love' sets up the hard-charging three song finale, 'Instant Mash', the do-do-wop strains of 'Pretty Girls', and the unforgiving closer, 'Got the Time'. Crossing do-wop choruses and melodies with sharp New Wave guitar chops and pulsing percussion is an intoxicating blend that infuses the album with infectious energy. Graham Maby's bass and Dave Houghton's percussion supplies a sturdy, robust rhythm to back up Sanford's bold licks, and Jackson's angry-boy vocals. The back-up vocals are few, which makes them seem even more pronounced when they do appear. The few there are aren't added pointlessly, and are used to great effect.

Although 'I'm the Man' would follow up 'Look Sharp!' with a similar urgency, Jackson's later works would prove too high-brow and laid-back for my own tastes. As often happens to angry rockers, he mellowed with success. But at least we have this gift, the kind of album that only a debut can spawn.

New Wave music review You Gotta Look Sharp!
It's easy for many -- especially music industry writers -- to dismiss Joe Jackson as a pop musician who possessed nothing more than delusions of grandeur, due to his forays into jazz and classical shortly after his first two smash albums. A pompous musician, or a true artist? Regardless of what side you're on, there's one thing you can't deny: Joe Jackson was/is one crafty, talented S.O.B., and I feel he's a force to be reckoned with.

_Look Sharp!_ is a smash album with ridiculously catchy tunes, infectious melodies, cynical and ambivalent lyrics, and snappy rhythms that'll be impossible *not* to bop your head to. There is literally not one boring, unlistenable tune to be found here: every track is jam-packed with energy, taste and charisma. While the lyrics are quite sarcastic (and hilarious in spots), the music is impossibly upbeat, and refrains from depressing wallowing: leave it to wisecracking Joe to turn something so self-deprecating and sarcastic into something peppy and upbeat -- it almost makes you wonder if Joe is celebrating his own dissatisfactions with love and life. Either way, infectiousness and intelligence are so rare to come by in one package. But Joe Jackson delivers big-time in this department. "One More Time" is a perfect example of how Joe makes something miserable sound so peppy and fun: listen to those ironic, almost masochistic lyrics. Yet the music is so driving, tasty and energetic. Of course, many already know "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" featuring those semi-hilarious, yet reflective lyrics, and the muted riff on the verses. "Throw It Away" is a fast-paced, energetic rocker, with Joe howling in certain parts of the track. The title track many may have heard as well: a snappy, tasty number exhibiting excellent musicianship. Listen to the sophisticated arrangement in the vocal harmonies during the closing parts of the chorus. "Fools In Love" is a reggae-rock number that pretty much speaks for itself, title-wise: the lyrics and Joe's vocal delivery crack me up hysterically. Hilarious stuff. And later, to close out the album, "Got The Time" is a fast-paced, energetic rocker in the style of "Throw It Away."

Want something ludicrously catchy and snappy? Want something subtly sarcastic and sneering, but at the same time, utterly reflective, moving and funny? Want some upbeat music good for cruising with your girlfriend, or otherwise? Pick this album up, along with _I'm The Man_. Both are essential Joe Jackson albums.

New Wave music review Joe's electrifying debut--brilliant songwriting that beats Costello at his own game
Joe Jackson's debut album "Look Sharp!" was recorded in 1978 & originally released in January of 1979, & what a superb debut it is. Yes, the similarity between Jackson and Elvis Costello (the latter of whom already had two albums out prior to 1979) are inevitable, but Joe simply had Elvis beat in terms of both vocal power and sheer songwriting ability.

Clearly this album was a cathartic experience for Joe--track upon track shows him letting off a ton of steam, & when you match this with the consistently deathless hooks, & punchy performances from the original Joe Jackson Band, the result is an album that is simply electrifying. This is one of those albums where the big hit is merely the tip of the iceberg--"Is She Really Going Out With Him?" is certainly a good tune, but it's kind of thin and annoyingly in-your-face--it makes perfect sense that Joe has come up with various different reworkings of this song over the years for live performance, seemingly as a compromise--this way the fans can't accuse him of totally avoiding this signature tune, yet it also gives Joe the satisfaction of knowing he's not merely pandering to his audience. "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" gets totally blown away by most of the rest of the songs on this album. In general, he sticks with hyperactive "New Wave"-ish rock & roll throughout the album, and it really feels like one of those albums that gets knocked out very quickly, which it was. That's not to say though that there's no variety--he gets in a strong dose of reggae on the sarcastic media slam "Sunday Papers" and on the mellow "Fools In Love", and there's also a funkiness to the ultra-catchy "(Do The) Instant Mash" which has incredibly witty & highly amusing lyrics, as well as an infectious, bluesy guitar lick. "Pretty Girls" is a blast--it starts off humorously similar to Manfred Mann's "Do Wah Diddy", & the song is about guys being utterly powerless when it comes to living in a world full of beautiful girls, & expresses a desperate desire for it to be otherwise with some truly mind-blowing lyrics. Each 'side' (in vinyl terms) ends with a thrilling fast-paced gem--"Throw It Away" is a cathartic rant, & the uncanny "Got the Time" is about the frantic rush people find themselves in to get things done. The uptempo, pleading album opener "One More Time", the bouncy feel-good pop of "Baby Stick Around", & the strutting title track are all gems as well. As much credit as Joe deserves, you've really got to hand it to Graham Maby (bass guitar), Gary Sanford (guitar), and Dave Houghton (drums)--their performances on this album are incredible. Few artists in music history have been as tirelessly determined to show their versatility & to make 'Big Statements' as Joe Jackson has--the result has been a career with considerable ups and downs, however, this debut album left no doubt about Joe's songwriting genius. To put it a certain way, this is where it all began for Joe--"Look Sharp!" is, without question, a must-have album. This standard CD version is perfectly fine, & it's certainly not a bad deal if you see it dirt cheap, however in 2001, this album was re-released with 2 bonus tracks, & that version is unquestionably preferrable to this older one and is worth paying a bit more for.

New Wave music reivew Bad Feeling
This CD reminds me of the the worst decade in music since the 1920s. The 50s had rock and roll, the 60s had rock and motown, and the 70s had classic rock. The 80s had, well, the "Thompson Twins". zzzzzz

New Wave music review a classic
HANDS DOWN, THE BEST THOMPSON TWINS ALBUM-EVER. ALONG WITH SOME OF THEIR BEST SINGLE (LIES, LOVE ON YOUR SIDE), THIS ALBUM CONTAINS SOME OF THEIR BEST SONGS-PERIOD! LIKE, TEARS, ALL FALL OUT, LOVE LIES BLEEDING, JUDY DO. IF YOU NOTICE EVERY THOMPSON TWINS ALBUM HAS A STAND-OUT BALLAD AMONG THE SYNTH POP. WELL, THIS ALBUM HAS TWO GREAT BALLADS: IF YOU WERE HERE (FROM SIXTEEN CANDLES) AND POSSIBLY THE BEST TT SONG EVER: KAMAKAZE. ALL IN ALL A GREAT ALBUM FROM ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED BANDS EVER.

New Wave music review One of the Best from the 80's
The first TT album as a trio consisting of Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie and Jo Leeway. Without doubt one of the best examples of joyful synth pop from the early 80's. Many described the Thompson Twins as highly contrived at the time, but really who cares if the music is good? And the music was great. I can only describe this as the most flexible and bouncing pop you will ever hear. Infused with a great sense of fun and drama, every tracks delivers something. If you want to listen to one TT album, this is definitely the one. Highlights include Love Lies Bleeding, Lies and We Are Detectives. And yes, the original cassette issued included an additional album of remixes - we would LOVE a re-issue of this on CD!

New Wave music review Magical! One Of Their Best Albums!
Simple Minds came closer than ever before to all-out rocking on this album. They do rock here, but they still exhibit skillfully played musical shadings. Highly inventive, underrated guitarist Charlie Burchill steps forward and rocks, but not without his rhythmic subtlety. At the time, this album was criticized for being poorly mixed and sounding muddy, but I quite like that thick din of sound. I haven't heard the remaster, so I hope they haven't botched it.

"Up on the Catwalk" kicks things off with rumbling thunder and haunting keyboards. One of SPARKLE's best songs despite borrowing the already overdone U2 theme "I'll be there tonight." Singer Jim Kerr delivers a fantastically wordy vocal that moves into improvisation towards the end of the song.

"Book of Brilliant Things" is good but not my favorite, although it grows on you with that catchy guitar hook.

"Speed Your Love To Me" and "Waterfront" are the album's glorious centerpieces. Simply brilliant and uplifting (and totally rockin'!)

"East at Easter" is a slow burner that builds with subtle intensity.

"Street Hassle" is one of Lou Reed's best songs and SM actually improve on the original, giving it a smoother, more organic quality. Fantastic orchestration. And, let's face it, Kerr has a much better voice than Reed. Lou must've approved because he sings (or, rather, speaks) on SM's "This Is Your Land" from STREET FIGHTING YEARS a few years later.

"White Hot Day" - not the best, but still a good song with musings about "time."

"'C' Moon Cry Like A Baby" is another favorite. This one has an infectious swing.

"The Kick Inside Me" is the hardest rocking song on the album.

"Shake Off The Ghosts" is floating serenity. Keyboardist Michael McNeil, so integral to the whole album, really takes this instrumental to a place of wonderment. A beautiful way to finish.

It's wonderful to hear an album that rocks without banging you over the head with feedback, distortion and the like as so many bands do today. People who call this the start of their U2-style bombastic phase are really missing the point.

New Wave music review The Best Simple Minds Album
This album sounds as fresh in 2005 as it did when I first bought it in '83. Amazing stuff

New Wave music review Wow...this album takes me back
The first time I heard Waterfront (listening to KROQ while on vacation in Orange county back in 1984) two things became very clear to me...one, that Sparkle in the Rain was a must-own album and two, that it would be years before Portland, Oregon would ever have a radio station as cool as KROQ (actually, it took twelve years)

New Wave music reivew A look at Aimee Mann's early years ...
Yes, a good chunk of the material here is very '80s, but it's all excellent. Despite the somewhat dated recordings, the songs pulse with Mann's thoughtfulness, intrigue and a touch of seething anger. Two of 'til tuesday's three hits are on this CD, which is great, but I am scratching my head at why "Looking Over My Shoulder" was left out. What a GREAT song! And it was a hit! Its omission baffles me. With that song, this would have been a five-star CD, but it's still pretty darn fabulous. If you are an Aimee Mann fan, this CD is definitely up your alley, my friend.

New Wave music reivew Should have been five stars...
Simply put...it is an awesome CD and a must for any Aimee Mann/Til Tuesday fan. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because the record company masterminds who put it together failed to include "Looking Over My Shoulder" (from the "Voices Carry" CD). I would love to know who decides what tracks to put on these "greatest hits" collections because they ALWAYS seem to forget an obvious choice or two!!!

New Wave music review Aimee Mann at her best
Vaguely remembering a few songs from the band, I bought this as a curiousity, sort of liked it upon listening, and then it grew on me. This collection of songs from 'Til Tuesday's first 3 cd's is an excellent compilation of thoroughly listenable music, featuring Aimee Mann's beautiful voice and knowing lyrics in melodic compositions of synthesized musical sounds. There is something that just works about the flow of tracks in this compilation (which is a rare phenomenon of greatest hits records). Standouts are the resounding "No One Is Watching You Now", the upbeat syncopations of "On Sunday," and the sentimental favorite "Coming Up Close", though this entire cd has a wealth of original vintage 1980's pop sounds, that haven't lost their touch or appeal, suggesting a certain timelessness in the songwriting and production. It's good road trip music, or even for studying. Simply a great cd.

New Wave music reivew real live!!!
this album has all of their hit songs.
sound is very good. it's their best live performence.

New Wave music reivew If you only can pick one Motorhead CD, get this!
I bought this after slugging my way through NO REMORSE and NO SLEEP 'TIL HAMMERSMITH. I actually debated on getting it after being somewhat let down by those two CDs. I am SOOOO glad I bought it in spite of those feelings!

This is the stuff metal nirvana is made of. For the opening of Iron Fist until the last note (which is quite sustained) of Overkill, it is a non-stop treat for the ears. Many of the classics are here: Bomber, Ace of Spades, Iron Fist, Metropolis, and the like are all here, but better sounding...even more aggressive than before. Throw in fantastic live versions of Orgasmatron, I'll Sing the Blues, and Going to Brazil and you get pure gold. Not that the other songs are just filler. Oh no, this is a barn-burner from start to stop.

My personal fave is the bridge from Iron Fist to Stay Clean. It may have taken Motorhead 20 years to get to the point where song trasitions are that smooth, but it is worth the effort for the listener.

So, if you can only pick one, get this one.

New Wave music review Motorhead-'Everything Louder Than Everyone Else:Live'(CMC)
I remember that I never even knew about the release of this 2-CD UNTIL someone in a record store had stuck it in my hand.Needless to say,I was more than delighted.A running time of at least 100 minutes,I never knew Motorhead played THAT long of set.'Everything...' was recorded live in Hamburg,Germany in May,1998.Includes two songs from their(then)latest studio effort 'Snake Bite Love' which are "Take The Blame" and the ass-kicking "Love For Sale".Just about every tune here rocks,as the older ones tend to stand out some.Like "Iron Fist","Metropolis","No Class","Capricorn","Bomber","Overkill" and their signature anthem "Ace Of Spades".A total of twenty-five headbanging cuts!An amazing live record.I haven't heard "The Chase Is Better Than The Catch" or "Orgasmatron" in ages.Recommended to ALL true metal warriors.
