Ska music review Duke Reid
Duke Reid Is God. I first heard about him from my IT teacher Alisdair Reid. He introduced me to the ways of Duke Reid, as I think they are related in some way. Absolutely incredible. If there is only one album you ever buy: make it this one!!

Ska music review Definately a Great Collection
There are really only a couple great rocksteady cds out there, and this is one of them. The thing that probably makes it stick out is the fact that it is all from one producer. Duke Reid had great style and quota of excellence that creates a real sense of consistency during the whole listen. A great collection of hits from a short, but improtnat time in jamaican music history

Ska music review Buried Gem
It doesn't get much better than this. This is a moment in time (c. '64-'66) captured forever. All fans of reggae, rock steady, ska, lounge, heck - MUSIC!, should give this a listen. It deserves a place in your collection.

Ska music reivew McCook would be Proud
To be honest, when I first heard this album,I was dissapointed. I'm a ska purest, and Skavoovies use of vocals on nearly every song therew me. But, after listening to it a few time, I was blown away. The vocals aside, the music is the best the Epitones have ever bealted out. Now, it makes me shake, because it is so damn good.

Ska music review better than bowling
Skavoovies has really done it for me over the years. I remember seeing them for the first time at age 15, playing down in ft. lauderdale over the christmas break. Old man of the mountain sold it for me, and I was hooked evere since. if Fat Footin was great, Ripe was a leap beyond. And now with the Growler, I can only imagine where there music will go from here.

The growler has an almost experimental Ska sound to it, blending a seemless upbeat sound into an almost experimental Jazz style. Songs like "Desert Gold" And "Sharp Teeth" will get "the boogy in your bones". It's extremely danceable, and I would go so far as to say it's probably one fo the best Ska releases of the year, this year and last. Too bad they didn't release "9 dragons" on this comp. It's easily one of their best songs.

Ska music review One of the Best!
This isn't your average ska band... These guys are one of the most talented I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Basically, its upbeat "Trad" ska. Musically, they're at their best on this CD. If you liked RIPE, you'll love The Growler. Skavoovie is my favorite band - no question. They simply wow me.

Ska music review These guys are amazing!
These guys opened at a show my boyfriend went to see and he liked them so much he bought the CD. Then, I recently came across it in his collection and now I absolutely have to buy it for myself. They're awesome, this is already one of my favorite CDs!!

Ska music review Buy this now!
I saw the Eclectics live(they opened for the Specials) and fell in love with their edgy ska sound at the show. I bought the cd (AND the LP)and am pleased to report that the sound carries over into the studio. These guys have got the tu-tone sound DOWN! Great horns, catchy lyrics (check out "we can make it happen") Trust me, buy this one, you won't regret it.

Ska music review One of the greats
If you like reggae, rocksteady or ska; if you like "The Harder They Come" and want a compilation that's as good as that one, this compilation is just as amazing--except it's all one artist! I have about 70 cds of music from Jamaica 1960-1980, and this is one of the absolute best. Justin Hinds is a genius.

Ska music review I met this guy
I was in Jamaica and i met this guy. He is the most incredible person ever. He was so nice and welcoming, he invited me to his home, gave me his phone number and told me i could come back and visit any time. In turn i bought two cds, and neither have left the first and second spot in my six disc cd player. If you like early Jamaican music, are intrested in reggae roots or enjoy musicians like Delroy Wilson and Desmond Dekker, purchase this cd.

Ska music review One of the best that ever was.
The more I listen to Justin Hinds, the more convinced I am that he is one of the 20th century's greatest forgotten musical artists. A colossus in the world of early Jamaican music, Hinds recorded literally hundreds of singles for legendary ska and rocksteady producer Duke Reid from 1963 to 1972. Between 1964 and 1966 alone he recorded some 70 singles, and it was during this time that he became Jamaica's most popular musical artist.

By the time the rest of the world tuned in to Jamaican music in the mid-70s, Justin was no longer in his prime. Arguably neither was the ambassador of Jamaican music himself, Bob Marley. But unlike Marley, Hinds had no real interest in marketing himself and thus never received due attention from audiences outside his own country.

After parting with Reid in 1972, Hinds released several singles under producer Jack Ruby, including his debut album "Jezebel" in 1976.

"Ska Uprising" includes 20 songs, all of which were released between 1963 and 1975. With the exception of I believe one tune, they were all recorded with Duke Reid. "Ska Uprising", which was released by Trojan Records in 1993, is the label's first of two Justin Hinds and the Dominoes compilations. The second, "Peace & Love", covers roughly the same time period and is equally as good. Anyone with an ear for early Jamaican music will want to rush out immediately after purchasing the one to get the other (just like I did.)

What you'll get is some of the best Jamaican ska and rocksteady ever recorded. Hinds' distinctive tenor is virtually unmatched in the world of music for sweetness and simplicity. More importantly, Hinds was, without a doubt, a songwriting genius. The consistency of this material is just amazing. The songs are just so comfortable to listen to. It's as if these songs have always been there. Every one speaks to the soul; every one is uplifting. As is true of most Jamaican artists, Justin Hinds is a very pious man and his lyrics reflect that. Don't get me wrong though - this is a very fun selection of tunes. These songs will make you want to dance, skank and rock steady like a natural born rudie.

One thing to keep in mind is that these songs weren't produced in a high gloss, state-of-the-art mega-studio. Consequently the sound is a little flat and grainy. It has nothing to do with a poor re-mastering job by Trojan- these songs have always sounded like this. I actually enjoy the lo-fi quality though - it's quaint and charming.

If you love Jamaican music, especially ska and rocksteady, you need "Ska Uprising" and "Peace & Love" - both are crucial. Seek them out. Trust me, if you're intrigued you will not be disappointed. Hope this helped!

This album is cool. It's a little short, but has some really cool songs from Less Than Jake's early releases, Losing Streak, Pezcore, and Goodbye Blue and White. It's really not a must have, so you have to make the call on whether you want to add it to your collection. I would recommend buying "The People's History of Less Than Jake." It's a DVD with most of those songs on it and it's cooler because you can watch it too.

Ska music review a great live album!
Less Than Jake - Live From Uranus was recorded live in New York in 1997. It has now been put onto CD and is really good. It has great songs on it such as Liquor Store, Automatic, Just Like Frank and Time And A Half On 2nd Avenue And 6th Street. Don't let the price put you off because it's definitely worth it. A must buy for all LTJ CD collectors!

Ska music review a Great Bootleg
One of the best bootlegs to date by LTJ... Capitol records did a great thing with it... although i recommend not buying it since you can get the MP3s for free.

Ska music review Pretty damn good.
This album is pretty damn good. If you like bands like Sublime, Filibuster, LBDA, Slightly Stoopid you'll most likely love this album.

Ska music review running a close second
i must admit, i'd probably never have heard the ziggens if it hadn't been for brad nowell's slightly tipsy (but wonderful, nonetheless) acoustic rendition of susanka's "big salty tears" on the sublime acoustic album. i am a consummate sublime freak, i love them more than any other band on EARTH; however, the ziggens run a very close second, & that's saying a LOT. the ziggens deftly combine many genres of music to come up w/something unique & amazing. if nothing else, pick up their new one, "Live: Tickets Still Available." got it myself a few days ago & it's been on constant rotation in my CD player ever since. a musical masterpiece that also showcases a bit of the ziggens' onstage sense of humor. let's face it, i love sublime, but they can't make any new albums, can they? they'll always be 1st to me, but the ziggens are starry second.

Ska music review The best live CD ever
If you are a fan of surf punk, or just enjoy a good time, then this is the cd. Any sublime or L.B.D.A fans should definatly check this one out!

Ska music reivew Another Hit!
I can't believe this band hasn't made it big yet! They have fast become my favorite. Hello Cleveland is a good compilation of live recorded songs. I knew some from off "You and Everybody Else" and some were new to me, but if you like FG live, you will enjoy this CD. These two discs really grow on you!

Ska music review a live one
These discs are the definition of what a live show should be about. FG's sound is great; the only thing keeping them from the mainstream is their dedication to jams (which the pop-culture ear gets bored with). In my opinion, the jams along with high livewire stage presence makes this band great.

Ska music review Captures live energy!
This cd is amazing. First, it offers a ton of Fighting Gravity's songs, new and old. The first cd has new songs with great jams, while the second has so much energy to it, its almost like being at one of their shows! This truly captures what Fighting Gravity is about, far better than their studio cd's do (although they are great as well). By far this is the best live album i own of any group, and this list includes Vertical Horizon, Dave Matthews Band, Pat McGee Band, and many others... I highly recommend this cd, theres something for everyone.
