Ska music review Take a unique voyage with some cool ska tunes!
This is the first Spider Nick CD I purchased after hearing them live. I found myself a fan in no time at all. Superb tracks that you must hear for yourself are "Blowin' Smoke Rings" and "Spider on My Bed." These two songs really showcase the band's talents. "Mango Shake" and "Hey Senorita" are fun dance songs and you'll be singing along in no time. Once you are hooked on Voyage to the Palace of Kali, check out the Maddogs' sophomore release, Firepit.

Ska music review an outrageous combination of horns music and pure skankin
considering spider nick was my physics teacher, i found that he really rocked the house down, spider on my bed is an all time great, and all the other songs were just fun to dance and listen to. if you like this album, also check out long island ska vol. II it has some really good bands including spider nick, edna's goldfish, the lightweights, and others. Mr. Martielli, what's up!!

Ska music review Creative, Innovative, Fun Music!
Listen to the album a few times - you'll find yourself a Spider Nick fan in no time!

Ska music review WELCOME BACK NUTTY BOY'S
I was lucky to find this gem while I was in Singapore. This is way better then the UK import. It has two extra tracks that are found on the Love Struck single's. Then one that is not found anywhere. I HIGHLY suggest grabbing this up while its around. Dont miss out on the extra tracks. Its a great album for a bunch of old men that can still rock a concert hall (I witnessed them live in NYC April 2000). For the serious Madness fan this is a MUST BUY piece of the nuttiest sounds around.

Ska music review A Great Comeback
I admit to a sentimental attachment to this band and their music. I owned all of their original material on British Import, and even though I thought their "final" album (released 15 years ago) was disappointing, I bought this one with high hopes. It is a triumph. I disagree with one of the earlier reviewers: I thought the "Nutty Sound" was immediately recognizable ("Johnny the Horse" or "Drip Fed Fred" could have come from their "One Step Beyond" days) but songs like "Elysium" remind me of "Keep Moving". Listen carefully to "Saturday Night Sunday Morning": it's lyrics will bring a wry smile to your face..."everything has changed, just everything; it's not Saturday Night, it's Sunday Morning." That's probably the theme of this disc: the same band, a little older, a little more mature musically. I'm glad to have them back, making great pop music again.

Ska music review It grows on you
Like the previous reviewer, I wasn't really sure what to think when I first got this album. I'm a huge fan of the Madness of old, and this is a somewhat different album from what Madness was known for. But the more I listen to this album the more I like it. The good bands are the ones that aren't afraid to change over time, but are still able to maintain their relevance. I never grow tired of Johnny the Horse, no matter how many times I listen to it. Great musical hooks, plus a message to boot. 4am is a great exploration of the emotions following a breakup (and actually a cover from one of Suggs' solo albums). The rest of the album remains solid, if quirky. I hope this won't be the last album from an incredible band.

Ska music review One of the greats
If you like reggae, rocksteady or ska; if you like "The Harder They Come" and want a compilation that's as good as that one, this compilation is just as amazing--except it's all one artist! I have about 70 cds of music from Jamaica 1960-1980, and this is one of the absolute best. Justin Hinds is a genius.

Ska music review I met this guy
I was in Jamaica and i met this guy. He is the most incredible person ever. He was so nice and welcoming, he invited me to his home, gave me his phone number and told me i could come back and visit any time. In turn i bought two cds, and neither have left the first and second spot in my six disc cd player. If you like early Jamaican music, are intrested in reggae roots or enjoy musicians like Delroy Wilson and Desmond Dekker, purchase this cd.

Ska music review One of the best that ever was.
The more I listen to Justin Hinds, the more convinced I am that he is one of the 20th century's greatest forgotten musical artists. A colossus in the world of early Jamaican music, Hinds recorded literally hundreds of singles for legendary ska and rocksteady producer Duke Reid from 1963 to 1972. Between 1964 and 1966 alone he recorded some 70 singles, and it was during this time that he became Jamaica's most popular musical artist.

By the time the rest of the world tuned in to Jamaican music in the mid-70s, Justin was no longer in his prime. Arguably neither was the ambassador of Jamaican music himself, Bob Marley. But unlike Marley, Hinds had no real interest in marketing himself and thus never received due attention from audiences outside his own country.

After parting with Reid in 1972, Hinds released several singles under producer Jack Ruby, including his debut album "Jezebel" in 1976.

"Ska Uprising" includes 20 songs, all of which were released between 1963 and 1975. With the exception of I believe one tune, they were all recorded with Duke Reid. "Ska Uprising", which was released by Trojan Records in 1993, is the label's first of two Justin Hinds and the Dominoes compilations. The second, "Peace & Love", covers roughly the same time period and is equally as good. Anyone with an ear for early Jamaican music will want to rush out immediately after purchasing the one to get the other (just like I did.)

What you'll get is some of the best Jamaican ska and rocksteady ever recorded. Hinds' distinctive tenor is virtually unmatched in the world of music for sweetness and simplicity. More importantly, Hinds was, without a doubt, a songwriting genius. The consistency of this material is just amazing. The songs are just so comfortable to listen to. It's as if these songs have always been there. Every one speaks to the soul; every one is uplifting. As is true of most Jamaican artists, Justin Hinds is a very pious man and his lyrics reflect that. Don't get me wrong though - this is a very fun selection of tunes. These songs will make you want to dance, skank and rock steady like a natural born rudie.

One thing to keep in mind is that these songs weren't produced in a high gloss, state-of-the-art mega-studio. Consequently the sound is a little flat and grainy. It has nothing to do with a poor re-mastering job by Trojan- these songs have always sounded like this. I actually enjoy the lo-fi quality though - it's quaint and charming.

If you love Jamaican music, especially ska and rocksteady, you need "Ska Uprising" and "Peace & Love" - both are crucial. Seek them out. Trust me, if you're intrigued you will not be disappointed. Hope this helped!

Ska music review this album is a must have
this entire album is fantastic. it's the perfect mix of reggae and ska... it's great for parties or rainy days or whatever. the kc white song (no, no, no) is haunting and sweet and will get stuck in your head. it is also virtually impossible to find anywhere else. believe me, I searched for it.

if you like old ska and reggae, this album will not be disappointing.

Ska music review 200% Dynamite
If you like reggae and funk this is must have. It is packed with classic hits.

Ska music review 10 stars would be better
I never heard a better record--this has all the best of the best. I am feeling it eternally. Ecstatic rhythyms sliding me along rivers of electric warmth. I recommend. Augustus Pablo, Toots, Prince Buster, Tenor Saw, you cant complain about the members and you never find better cuts from them. Soul Jazz Records, as always the classic. Try the others in the series too never disappoint you.

Ska music review sexier than ricky martin, for sure
If you can't see Mandorico live, this cd is a pretty good alternative. The energy is infectious despite the lack of Jesse's onstage antics. You'll have to provide your own backflips. In addition to the fast songs are pieces of incredible tenderness. Everything is so tight musically and artistically its a challenge to pick a favorite. The line-up changes constantly and I think that the group on this album is my favorite incarnation.

Ska music review Mandorico IS a party!
Lush Latin Ska. Incredible horns, slick bass, insatiable drums, a variety of stimulating instruments, and the sultry, sexy sounds of Jesse's lead vocals. The way he sings in both English and Spanish make you want to learn the language. This album will never collect dust among your collection. Their energy is infectious. See this band live, if you ever get the chance. One word:Energy!

Ska music review If you like Ozomatli or No Doubt then you love them!
I saw Mandorico at the Five Points St Patty's Day Festival in Columbia SC. Despite the sun and the lame crowd, they rocked! With a combination of Mambo, Ska, and hip hop - they got the crowd on their feet. The lead singer has amazing energy and I can't wait to see them live again. I bought their cd immediately. It looks like they were touring without their normal horns section (female trombonist) but their sound was tight and the songs were great. I'd definately see them again and I'm going to buy their first album too.

The firecrackers on the sleeve give a good idea of what to expect on this Florida ska-punk group's third major-label album after a brief sojourn back in the indie world. Horns, chugging guitars, and crashing rhythms mesh to create a high-energy racket that refuses to subside until the band has rolled out its raucous closing cover version of Cheap Trick's "Surrender." The label turbulence does little to affect its angular wit, as focus returns to the heady party vibes of the group's hugely successful major label debut, Losing Streak: pogo-driven "Best Wishes to Your Black Lungs" and "That's Why They Call It a Union" are standard-issue Less Than Jake. As with the band's other releases, the music inspires clear feelings of love and hate. --Aidin Vaziri

Ska music review One of the best CD's I own.
These guys are one of the best bands ever! They are so cool. Here, I'll tell you what Less than jake means. Jake was a twenties and thirties term for cool. So they don't think very highly of themselves. And, hey, the DVD that comes with it is parental advisory. The T shirt is really cool too.

    1. Welcome to the new south- 9/10. This one really sticks in your head forever!
    2. The ghosts of me and you- 10/10. Second best song on the album. Great guitar and trombones.
    3. Look what happened- 8/10. A remix of the one on borders and boundaries.
    4. The science of selling yourself short- 10/10. Best song. Great tune. Most ska song, with the most trombones.
    5. Short fuse burning- 7/10. Not catchy but still good.
    6. Motown never sounded so good- 8/10. Really ska. Sounds like #4.
    7. The upwards war and the downturned cycle- 7/10. Slow but okay.
    8. Escape from the a bomb house- 8/10. A sad song. Pretty good though.
    9. Best wishes to your black lung- 9/10. Really fast song. I like it.
    10. She's gonna break soon- 5/10. Bad song. I usually skip it.
    11. That's why they call it a union- 8/10. Another sad song like #8.
    12. Plastic cup politics- 10/10.Fun to sing along to. Great tune.
    13. The brightest bulb has burned out/ screws fall out- 7/10. Slow but still okay.
14.Surrender- 9/10. Funny song, also a remake. Great chorus.

If you like this album, check out the album losing streak!

Ska music review Wow, one of the best CD's I own.
This is a very good CD. And the T-shirt that comes with it is very cool. It also doesn't say this, but the DVD is parental advisory. I was surprised by that when it came. (The CD is not parental Advisory, not even a single sware word on the thing) Well, here are my song reviews:

    1. Welcome to the new south-9/10. This is a good song to sing along to. "Welcome back, Outcasts, I know...." Sorry. I'm singing it.
    2. The ghosts of you and me-10/10. This is probably the slowest song and the second or third best on the album, but the trombones before the chorus are SO good!
    3. Look what happened- 8/10. A remix of the one on Borders and Boundaries.
    4. The science of selling yourself short- 10/10. Best song on the CD. This is a lot more ska than the other songs. Very, very catchy.
    5. Short fuse burning- 8/10. The best part is the chorus, catchy.
    6. Motown never sounded so good- 9/10. Sounds al lot like #4, but not quite as catchy.
    7. The upwards war and the downturned cycle- 7/10. Not a great song, but still okay.
    8. Escape from the A bomb house-7/10. Pretty slow and boring, I think.
    9. Best wishes to your black lung- 9/10. Fast song. Really good.
    10. She's gonna break soon- 6/10. How can this be the hit song???? It's the worst, least catchy song on the whole album!!!
    11. That's why they call it a union- 8/10. Good song about a family that fights too much.
    12. Plastic cup politics-10/10. Fun to sing along to. Stuck in my head. Best trombone part in album.
    13. The brightest bulb has burned out/screws fall out- 7/10. Another slow song.
    14. Surrender- 9/10. A remake. Really good chorus.

Hey, if you like Less than Jake, check out other ska bands like Big D and the kids table, and I think Home Grown used to be ska, but check em out anyway.

Ska music review Another step forward for LTJ
This is an excellent follow-up to Borders and Boundries, and may be the best LTJ album to date. They've re-done Look What Happened and it's even better on Anthem. Despite the misconception that they've become too "pop-punk" it's more like they've matured as a band both lyrically and how the songs are written. They evolve themselves through every new album, and this is no different. You may not hear as many horn parts, but it's still definitly Less Than Jake, and any fan that's not too stubborn to accept change should love it. My personal favorite tracks are The Ghosts of You and Me and Best Wishes to Your Black Lung. There are a lot of other great songs though, it's one of those albums that makes it hard to pick out ONE song above the rest because they're all excellent.

Ska music review Baker/Ruggiero are freakin' geniuses! . . . or geniuii?
I'm sure i could rave for hours upon hours, and megabytes upon megabytes on how incredible Jeff "Django" Baker and Vic "Sluggo" Ruggiero are, so i'll try and keep this comparatively slim. "Open Season" was an amazing album, one which would be devastatingly hard to follow up . . . for any other artists, that is. With "Back With a New Batch," the music is again complex-yet-simplistic, with reggae, rocksteady, ska, and even dub mixed into a genre so independent that it can only be deemed great music. If you're a music fan (ie, hate matchbox 20 :-) ), this, as well as the band's other 2 (and every Slackers album pressed), should have a spot in your collection already carved out and ready . . .

Coxsonne Dodd's Kingston, Jamaica, recording studio may have lacked the latest equipment, but it was the laboratory where such legends as guitarist Ernie Ranglin experimented and made their greatest riddimic [cq] discoveries, and where young singers like Sugar Minott, the Wailing Souls, and The Heptones refined their vocal chops. During the time period covered in this first volume of Heartbeat's Studio One series (ca. late 1960s to early '70s), Ranglin and other stellar musicians like The Skatalites were the house band, composing tracks on the spot but usually uncredited on the innumerable vinyl classics that the studio churned out. Diehard reggaeites will recognize virtually every track but still thrill to hear The Cables' "Baby Why" elide into The Termites' "My Last Love," and a very young Dennis Brown's "Impossible" giving way to "The Heptone's "Party Time." Nonreggae-heads will wonder what they've been listening to these past 30 or so years. --Elena Oumano

    Ska music review A Classic
Very solid comp from Heartbeat's collection of studio one masters. Heartbeat seems to have the best backlog of these old classics. To the listener of samples: The best tracks on this album are not those highlighted (Row, Fisherman Row by the Wailing Souls, Mr DC by Sugar Minott, and Jah Promise by Johnnie Osbourne are songs that any reggae fan will cling to.)

This is my fourth copy of this album (and NO you can't borrow it).

Ska music review Reggae that you can listen to.
Take me back to a time when reggae was easy to listen to. Old school reggae is becoming obscure with the explosion of slack lyrics. These songs were about love, life, and politics. Before Bob Marley became a superstar, he was a member of the Wailing Souls. Listen to the nasal sounds of "Row Fisherman Row" and you'll start grooving to the lyrical tunes.
