Ska music review ahh memories
woah.. its been about four years since anyone has reviewed this.. i wonder why : ) This is definately in my opinion one of the best ska albums of all time. i put these guys right up there with hepcat, desmond dekker, prince buster, the maytals, skinnerbox, ect. too bad this album was extremely overlooked a few years back when this stuff was still popular. these guys missed out on alot of well deserved aclaim! goodbye brown eyes and free checking are a couple of my favs

Ska music review unique, authentic, excellent
Sounds more like "1st wave" ska, really closer to jazz than some of the newer ska-punk and related stuff. Very smooth throughout, with sonically perfect instrument work. The keyboards are especially good, as are the lyrics. Very "thick" sound in terms of instrumentation--not many holes in the wall of sound, but it's not overpowering or redundant. Excellent buy.

Ska music review Great SKA!! Awesome Rhythms! Especially great sax work!!!!
This is one of the few CD's that I have listened to back to back and liked even better each time I listen! This is truly "tight" SKA with great melodic horn lines and super vocals to match. I am a selective jazz fan and found that these musicians were tasteful as well as full of the energy that you would expect from a SKA band. Why aren't these guys on MTV????

Ska music review Animal Chin was AMAZING
This is a GREAT (out of print) EP...unfortunately I already had it (all of it is on the still-in-print "20 Minutes From Right Now" LP). So i'd recommend this disc for the die-hard Animal Chin fans...otherwise just pick up "20 Minutes" and get a little more for your money.

Ska music review The best band in the history of bands
There are bands that make you bob your head and tap your foot, but Animal Chin goes way beyond that. Whether it's the vocals and lyrics or the instruments and beat, every song on this album will make you get up and move. This band has so much energy, and it's energy harnessed correctly. If you like hardcore, or punk or ska.. I doubt you'll be dissappointed with Animal Chin. Look for their full length "All the Kids Agree" available on Kingpin Records.

Ska music review They Rule
I would say that this is the best SKA/PUNK release ever. The vocals are great and the riffs rule. I especially like the drums that go boom boom boom and the guitars that go na na na. Just Kidding, in all seriousness they are a force to reckon with.

Ska music review Must-Have Reggae CD
I bought this years ago, only knowing a few songs on it, and LOVED every song...then lost it, and am psyched to find it again. This CD is truly excellent.

Ska music review Must-have reggae
I must say I consider myself a serious reggae critic, and this mix has some of the best ever...had it 8 years ago and finally found it again....PRAISE JAH!

Ska music review Jammin' and Outstandin'
This is one of the best mixed reggae albums I have ever heard. I recommend it to anyone who listens to reggae. Every song is up-beat and will make you want to get up and dance and sing. If you only buy one reggae album make this the one.

Ska music review A Marley Fan Must-Have!
I have been a fan of Bob Marley's music for nearly 30 years and I have most of what's been released - but this was a very pleasant surprise. I am not very familiar with "dub", and I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but this CD is a great listen for any fan of Marley's nusic or reggae in general. I've been duped with unecessary compilations of re-cycled old recordings, but this is fresh, bold, and powerful. It's quite remarkable to hear this innovative and creative approach that carries over today's music over thirty years later.

You won't regret it!

Ska music review Uncover hidden treasure!
Judging by the lack of reviews on this title not too many people have picked up this CD. That needs to be set right immediately. This is crucial Marley but even more importantly this is some of the finest work by Lee Perry ever committed to tape. The Upsetter's name should be on the cover as this is as much his album as Marley's. I only happened across this CD by chance while browsing in a record store. Upon first glance I chalked it up to yet another cheap Marley compilation (The cover is fairly dull), but when I flipped it over I found that it was all magical Upsetter! I really can't say enough about this album. It boasts some of the best sound quality of any of the early Marley releases and in dub, the rhythm section shines like the sun. Bass players take note: This is how to seriously lay it down.
This disc is essential to your Dub, Lee Perry, or Bob Marley collection! YOU MUST HAVE THIS!

Ska music review If You Like Dub...
...this has got to be on top of the dub heap, absolute top quality rootsy dub. Sure Bob Marley on the cover will help sales, but this is really a LEE SCRATCH PERRY album. It's all Lee Perry dub all the way, and this release is the best production of these primal dubs EVER. It's mostly clean, that is, very few vocals. If you're a collector of dub, don't let other releases, in which this "Marley" material is poorly produced, deter you from buying this CD. This CD is GREAT!!!!

Ska music review for something different in ska, this is a great disc!
just give this a listen and if you're ever in the chicago area, go see 'em, because they rock even harder live.

Ska music review Good stuff from Chicago
Not too many bands acheive a sound like this, and it's definately not something you'd expect from a Chicago band with the reputation we get sometimes. Take a listen. It's a good disc.

Ska music review This is the sound of Chicago Ska!
From start to finish DGB's debut album Jumps up witht the rock-steady sound of ska and soul. The first 2 songs should be themes to eraly Bond films

Ska music review Best reggae music ever!
I saw Toots and the Maytals in concert in 1981,and they blew me away.I caught Toots again at a small club in Pittsburgh,Pa.last night, and got blown away at close range! This CD will provide you with a good sampling of Toot's special brand of soulful, uplifting, rocksteady reggae/ska. If you love good music and great live shows,I urge you to see Toots Hibbert and his superb band.In the meantime, buy this CD and play it loud!

Ska music review A trully great live album... by an all time reggae great
If you like roots reggae... and you like upbeat music. This album will blow you away. pressure drop, 54-46, get up stand up (not the song you already know.... tosh/marley), and time tough.... all great songs.

If you ever have a chance to see toots in concert.... GO! before this last piece of late 60's early 70's Jamaican ska / reggae innovation is gone!

If you like these songs and would like to hear more, I highly recommend the two disc anthology available on the island/jamaica label.

if you like this album, and want more good live reggae... try burning spear - live in paris another all-time great you should also buy babylon by bus if you don't have it.

Ska music review the greatest live album ever.

Ska music review Rockin'!!
This album never left my CD player for the first 2 months I had it! The energy in the singer's voice and the intelligent lyrics gave me chills. Pushover definately has a rockin' style all there own! 2 thumbs way up!

Ska music review Super!
This is a great great album, and I cannot begin to tell all you kids out there how much I love this album. I bought it super cheap at a Slow Gherkin show in Omaha, and when I got home I put it in the CD player and loved it right away. Fly, yo...It's great how they mix music--this is music for emo kids, ska kids, punk rockers or even just people who like music and don't care about what kind it is. Very fly!

Ska music review Something Ventured...Gained
I've followed Pushover since their Mealticket days and I must admit that their latest sound should "push" them over the wall. Their lyrics are homewritten and are obviously filled by life's experiences. My favorite track is #13, Home...What a thrill to hear sounds that take me back to my youth. The lead track "Tell Me Why" is a sure-fire way to get this CD started...the boys seem to have scaled back on the Ska-styled horns and their background electronics grab the listener and won't let go...Keep a close ear to "Go Boy, Logic and Loss, and Radio my Life" and experience the feeling. Lead singer's voice on the edge, he brings life to the songs, this band's breakthrough is SOON!...this is the only soundtrack that I can actually enjoy with my kids!!!!

Ska music reivew A Little Balance and Perspective please - . . . ALL THE RAGE is Much Better
So even though RAGE is currently rated lower, that's the one to get. It's a classic 80's party album that's also much more than just a party album. HAND TO MOUTH is more for committed fans. I do especially like "In Conversation" and "Come Again!" is a plea for Jesus Christ's return as well as a very fun, upbeat song. I no longer subscribe to Christianity, but I can still appreciate the tune.

Ska music review Hand to Mouth , Music to Ears
Hand To Mouth is an outstanding example how well written, performed pop music from the mid-eighties should've sounded like. Forget about the over produced, heavily synthesized Euro schlock. This is the real fun stuff. At times some of the tracks had almost a retro feel or throwback to the music styles of the 50's and 60's. Love Without The Fun resonates with the 50's drive-in, soda pop sound while Come Again has a 60's (almost Burt Bacharach feel with early Motown undertones) sugar coated infectious groove. The reggae cloaked Forward As One is a special throwback to General Public's days with their old group English Beat. The last track, Cry On Your Own Shoulder is a smooth and suave r&b/dance track which closely resembles something witten or performed by ABC off the Lexicon of Love album.

My consensus on General Public's Hand To Mouth is that of other reviewers; It was an underrated and underpromoted project that could've soared back then !

Ska music review Overlooked gem--really something remarkable, don't miss!
This one was never a huge success commercially. Why? I have no idea, because this album is simply brilliant. Even more evolved than GP's first album (_All the Rage_), yet still just as catchy, and still sounds great today. As with their first album, the lyrics are wickedly clever, and come at you from within songs that are at once both musically complex and sing-along catchy. The complexity is evidenced in the striking horn arrangements sprinkled throughout the entire album-- the way the horns interact with the vocals is evidence that there was a lot of talent and thought behind the songwriting. This version of the cd (which I thought was out of print? ) comes with EIGHT bonus tracks-- including an obscure one that alone is worth the price of the whole CD: "Taking the Day Off", a bouncy gem that conks you over the head with fun and isn't otherwise available, aside from being heard in the background in "Ferris Bueller" (in the Cameron Swimming Pool scene, I think). So don't miss this album!
