Ska music review great punk rock album
its true this is a forgotten band still its great and a legend for those who have heard it. "babylons burning" is a great song
id like to recomend another great but forgotten band called "slaugher and the dogs" who i think are one of the best 20 punk rock bands as well as the ruts "buy this cd"

Ska music review Punk at its Best
What a great album, if you were an avid fan of the Ruts like me, you probably already have this album, but if not, give this one a try. I guarantee if you liked Hanx by SLF and all the Clash stuff you will enjoy this album.

Ska music review A great forgotten punk band
If you consider yourself a disciple of '77 style British socio-political punk, then you simply cannot be without this. The holy trinity of punk rock (IMHO) goes like this: The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, and The Ruts. They are that good. All 3 bands adeptly blend punk, rock, reggae, and pop to form a tremendously explosive and worthy musical artform. This 1-disc overview has thankfully continued to be in-print for some time now, allowing people to hear the greatness that was cut short by drug addiction. Not the most well-known punk band, but more deserved of punk notoriety than 3/4 of the bands that have gotten famous since '77. This is vital stuff.

Ska music review Ruder Than You
Still have the original LP!!!! Great ska compolation, nothing like the original SKA Era.

Ska music review Simply Smashing Pop-Reggae
This Are Two Tone is the summary disk put out by the record company that goes by that name. It's all of the hits by famous groups of that time period.

The music is hard to explain. Some would say "ska", or others "pop-reggae." I say it's just plain good!

There are happy songs, there are sad songs. But all of them are fast, jumping songs. Serious mood-music.

Ska music review awesome...
highly reccommended ( if i spelt that right) for new comers into the "rude girl"/"rude boy" scene...or if you just flat out like this type of music. it has great awesome bands from the 2tone era and also has the duet with rhoda dakar and the specials aka. a must for ska enjoyers around! cheers!

The Smooths rock!! Put this album on your wishlist, because it is sure to get your head bangin'.

Ska music review Melodic
As a resident of the Baltimore area, I have had several opportunities to see these guys live. They put on such a good show, and their CDs capture that. Hopefully they'll have a long career, as their music is of better quality than that of your basic Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, or Korn.

Ska music review Good ska fun.
Big hand to The Smooths for their debut album. Very well done. "Very Own Vegas" is a jumpin', skankin' time, from end to end. Great horns, sweet vocals, and bouncin' melodies. Too bad it's such a short CD (only 10 tracks), can't wait for their next one.

Ska music review Really Fun and overall Excellent
I listened to this album for the first time today and at first I was a bit unsure, but I gave it five minutes and I swear this is as good as their original work.

I thought this was a really fun album to have in your collection and I will go on all day recommending this to everyone I meet.

Ska music review Wonderful Madness
The title says it all!!! I waited two weeks for the CD and the wait was worth every second. Madness does it again bringing back their classic tunes and thrilling me once more. The is one CD you can play over and over again in you car and never get tired of it! A+++

Ska music review Wonderfully nostalgic
We have waited a great deal of time for this release, a long wait. And, yes, it is a wonderful album. Madness' avid fans would surely recognize the Madness sound. Moreover, it seems that this album was composed with a nostalgic end, a hidden tribute to Madness' earlier albums. Johnny the Horse may remind you of Michael Caine; Elysium has the Give Me a Reason sound, 4am has something of Victoria Gardens and Turning Blue, and If I Didn't Care also joins the predominant Keep on Moving theme.
A tribute to Madness' Rise and Fall can be easily detected in Lovestruck and The Wizard. Fans would surely recognize Benny Bullfrog of Madness 7 in Going to the Top.
However, the one and only song that keeps to the real sound and beat of British two tone ska is The Communicator; a hit that could have been easily performed by, for instance, Bad Manners.

Bitter nostalgia is also the theme of Saturday night... that faces the death of the 80s when the world had less time for war and global terrorism and more time for great music, discos at the weekends and incredible video clips.

Ska music review Pain where have you gone?
My boyfriend and i came across a pain cd in freakin bargain bin for a buck, in an independent music store in NY, we took it home and listened to it and it blew us away. Every song is great, the lyrics, the music, everything. What happened to this band? Bad promotion? Crappy management? I have no idea how a great band like this slipped through the cracks, to anyone who considers themself a music fan, weather you like ska, rock, or indie music, i suggest you buy this album right away, hell buy all their albums, Pain what happned to you?

Ska music review Every beat you can think of
Pain has got to be one of the most versatile bands I have ever Heard. One of my friends got me into them after introducing them to ska. Although they don't like being called a ska band and they're really not. They hvae some ska songs but they really do anything. One of my favorite songs of theirs, on their previous album "Midgets with Guns", called Chuck Al Hashib actually had a tango rythym to it. It's this versatility and their sense of fun that keeps me into their music much longer than I've been interested in any other band.

Ska music review Pain Brings Relief
THIS CD IS AWESOME! i am constantly on the look out for great music and i dont know how this band eluded me for so long. I feel like i missed a big part of music history. Catchy music, fun and well written lyrics, and horns! who could ask for anything more? Pain is one of those bands that you can listen to and think.."wow..these guys had alot of fun doing this" and thats what music is all about. doing your thing and having fun.
I highly recommend this and any other Pain cd you can find. theyre out there. Get them and make your life better.

Ska music review Another great release by Liberator!
Hey you ska freaks out there, you should check out this swedish ska band, it's definately worth the money! Just don't expect your average radio-friendly Reel Big Fish or Mighty Bosstones ska, rather expect music that sounds like a mixture out of sublime, the Pilfers and maybe 'Quality Soft Core' by Mad Caddies. If you are into that kind of music you are going to love this CD.

Ska music review Great CD
This CD has a bunch of good songs on it. If you like ska or music like that, then definitely buy this.

Understand from the get-go that label retrospectives are spotty affairs. Rare is the label that's free of stiffs, and Stiff Records' raison d'état was to serve as a refuge for castoffs, including a fair share of flaccid acts. The off-center likes of Nick Lowe (having recently fleed the misbegotten Brinsley Schwarz), Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric, Larry Wallis, and a very young Elvis Costello found a home with Stiff in the '70s. It wasn't a punk label, though it boasted the Damned; it wasn't a ska imprint, though Madness and Desmond Dekker recorded for the company; it wasn't a power-pop or pub-rock haven, though a number of Stiff's leading lights (Dury, Lowe, Costello, Dr. Feelgood, Dave Edmunds) fell into those categories. And it wasn't terribly long-lived. This imaginatively designed four-disc overview definitely loses momentum toward the end, but there's a humble enchantment to an overwhelming percentage of tracks here from label mainstays, the semiacclaimed (Devo, Graham Parker, Lene Lovich, the Pogues), and uncelebrated (Mickey Jupp, Mick Farren, Jona Lewie). -- Steven Stolder
Average review score: Ska music reivew

Ska music reivew If they're dead we'll sign 'em
Disc 1 & 2 are the whole reason to buy this, with a few cuts from disc 3 thrown in as a bonus. Probably more economical to have your old 45 RPM versions converted to CD (and keep those goofy quips engraved in each record's blank space next to the label).

Ska music review Action Packed
Stiff is one of those wacky labels that always seemed to sneak by just under the pop radar.

I received this set as a gift a few years ago, and couldn't be happier about it. This collection is so full of unknown bits of whimsy and little-known cuts by more popular artist that it starts to become more of a treasure chest than a "best of."

Ian Drury of "Sex and Drugs and Rock & Roll" fame appears as vocals on several other cuts including "Kitchen at Parties." This collection is full of simmilar fun little nuggets.

So much of the "alternative" music scene that was largely contained by British borders seems to be archived here, and it's fun to tap into it. Americans (such as myself) who always thought that the band Madness was largely a one hit wonder will be surprised by the spastic "Baggy Trousers," a song I enjoyed so much I have purchased several Madness CDs since hearing it.

While Elvis Costello originally got his start on Stiff, he has only one song here - probably a god thing, as we all have a good idea what he sounds like - leaving more room for the lesser known artists of Stiff.

There is a charming wackiness to this collection and to the whole Stiff attitude. This is a great collection for exploring what the Brits were doing while we tollerated Dexy's Midnight Runners.

Oh! Special bonus: There is a fabulous (FABULOUS) cut of Desmond Dekker's "Isrealites" on disc three. This along merits purchasing this set.

Ska music review Instantly enjoyable.
Strange...I remember trying to search for this boxed set earlier in the year and coming up with nil for my efforts. Then, after accidentally finding it in a New York record store and acquiring it right away, I find it on here. Must be my mind playing tricks on me.

In any case, I'm not old enough to have lived through the era from which these songs sprung, but the appeal of the music easily traverses the generation gap. I haven't even yet explored all of this set and it's already been some of the most fun listening experiences I've had while listening to "older music": Elvis Costello, The Belle Stars, Nick Lowe, Kirsty MacColl...and personal favourite, spunky popster Rachel Sweet. Vivacious and highly entertaining. My only complaint is that the liner notes are somewhat flimsy. Though full of the kind of tongue-in-cheek humour that, apparently, Stiff Records was famous for, the result of the non-journalistic approach is that there's very little real information on the music, the history, the label, and the context, hidden by the cheeky writing and witticisms. I for one would've liked some more detached, professional journalism to inform me of the significance of this music such as in that Amplifier article I had read (which led me to look for this boxed set in the first place). So on the packaging front, much is left to be desired. But the music is uniquely appealing, a world of its own.
