One of a handful of veteran ska bands that have kept ska in America alive through the decades, this outfit later attracted the attention of the U.K.'s fabled Mad Professor, the producer-label owner who's worked with everyone from Lee Perry to the great mic-rocker Macka B for The One That Got Away, a collection of never-released tracks and remixes. For this set, the Boston, Massachusetts-based group collaborated on the production with American Lou Giordano and other rock producers. With more focused lyrics than most that attest to the group's political engagement and familiarity with contemporary futuristic literature, Bim take their cues from the jazz-oriented Skatalites, rather than from the more diffuse energy of English two-tone ska outfits like the Specials and the Selector. This early release by the group's five core members shows why Bim Skala Bim were one of the best. Dan Vitale's compelling leads and Tim Arhelger's drums are rooted in the rock arena, but they meet the band's swelling horns and jazz-schooled ska arrangements for a smooth, upbeat sound that's paced at just the right tempo to demand dancing yet allows just enough space for one to absorb the sense of thoughtful tunes like "All for One" and the title track. --Elena Oumano

Ska music review The Perfect Summer CD
Bones is the ideal summer CD. The ska band blends jazz and reggae, big horn sounds and more conventional rock sounds, into an album of upbeat tunes that just seem to demand that you get outdoors and do something. This is the kind of CD that you listen to once, and have know which song is your favorite, then you listen to it again, and decide that another is your favorite, and so it continues until you find that you HAVE no favorite. It's the kind of CD that you find yourself singing the songs in your head two days after you listen to it . . . and find you don't mind. Highly recommended album from a highly talented, and largely unknown, band.

Ska music review A Tribute to one of Boston's favorite sons
If you don't know Slapshot, I dare say you are missing out on an important part of East Coast Hardcore history. Hardcore, not as in countless Korn and Limp Biskit clones, but hardcore as it was meant to be--angry, fast and furious. Paying homage to Slapshot are none other than Boston's best current crop of hardcore/Oi!/punk bands. This is a great tribute, something Ken Casey (bassist for the Dropkick Murphys and owner of the label that released this, Flat records) should be greatly proud of. To me, the best tracks are Blood for Blood doing "No Friend of Mine" The Trouble doing "Back on the Map", the Molly Maguires turning "Moment of Truth" into a lively Irish jig and of course, the Dropkick Murphys ripping through "I've Had Enough". Jack Kelly should be proud...Slapshot...an influential hardcore band that's still going and the best in Boston(Or anywhere else, really) paying such a fine tribute.

Ska music review Boxing Clever
Birmingham has long been the city of rock. but in Farse we find its many face personified in 5 people, who have been tasked by the Brummy gods of rock to reclaim for the city what duran duran seeked to destroy. making a musical stew such as this has never been easy, it take the right mixture of madien, the specials, UB40, and GBH. but farse hit it off once again. farse are fast shaping up to be the band to watch at the moment, and if you can forgive dirty words like "ska" you should join the rest of us and marvel in awe.

Ska music review Retro-Seventies Groove Rock Masterpiece; Guitarmania!
Dual guitar attack from the Slow Band's Steve Westfield and The best guitar slinger in Beantown, Rich Gilbert. At least 2, more often 3 guitar solos on top of each other, with solo sections lasting for 3 or 4 minutes! Move over Nugent! Gilbert,( Uncle Tupelo, Frank Black, Zulus, Human Sexual Reponse), blows away all comers in the weed-head-hot-rod guitar battle. this is "cruising in your rag-top muscle car on a summer eve down hollywood boulevard after doing bong hits" type of RAWK. "Smoked a Little too Much Monkey Brain Last Night" was even awarded the sixth best song of the year by "High Times" magazine. Also cool... the stories of wasted chaos caught on tape and placed between songs. If you rock, you already have this.

Ska music review Get this!
Highly recommended! Fermin used to sing with cult icons Negu Gorriak, from Spain. This album completely rocks in and out! A must buy, you won't be disappointed! Traces of reggae, ska, dub, hip hop, salsa, electronica and ambient can be found throughout the whole album! A good album to dance to, as well as get "nice" to.

Ska music review Mod Perfection
This is one of those albums I have searched for repeatedly with a hope that it would some day come out on CD. In high school, a friend of mine had this on vinyl and I, consequently, had it on tape. It was an expensive and hard-to-find import. I picked this up as a CD as soon as I found it (about one month ago).As far as I'm concerned, this is the best mod album that was ever put out. The Jam was great, but a bit too serious and punk-tinged for me. This album is more upbeat, without being silly like some of the Merton Parkas, Squire, or Three O'Clock. The band is less pompous than they were on "Glory Boys", and this album is better than that one in every way. The vocals are good, the lyrics sometimes excellent ("One Day in Your Life"), and the music is driving, danceable fun--excellent drums, brass embellishments, and, on one or two, female backing vocals. The whole album has a very clean, clear, and energetic sound from start to finish. One of the best CD's I own.
