Ska music reviews

Writing from an American viewpoint, I can say that this set contains music from names many of us may never have heard from before, and I wAger people from other parts of the world may not know many of these people as well. But, obscurity aside, this is a completely listenable set with, in my opinion, no bad tracks. There are a few tracks that are less listenable than others, of course, but all the tracks go together. There are tracks that are more modern than others, but they compliment each other well, and this is a well rounded collection.

This is one of those albums that will always stay with you. Rocksteady's true reign (1965-68), between Ska and Reggae, is perfectly distilled in this compilation. Quality is excellent, unlike many Jamaican compilations you find. You will never find these elsewhere and they're all gems. If you only know Jamaican music from Ska and Reggae, try this. I love it, I play it for friends, I even play it for my inlaws and they love it. I highly recommend it.

Subtle yet heavy on the Dub spirit, imagine what Basement 5 and Beats International might have done in 1999. Dreamy female vocals and solid rhythms throughout, its not "wanker dub" but more song oriented than most recent stuff out there. Internet rumours abound of upcoming white label dub plates and a companion remix/dub CD release, but this record rocks mostly because it etches out totally unique territory for itself in this world of samples and electronic dub music. What a concept, a real band! Can't wait for what's next.

For me once I heard track 5 by Alpha & Omega I knew I had to buy this cd. The bass is just so heavy that I play it over and over! The rest of the tracks are good as well. A cd that it took me a few listens to get used to but now I play it straight through all the time. Check it out!

for anyone who likes ska or punk music they should get this cd. all the songs hav a great beat and is very enjoyable to listen to,,,,songs like the video girl,the mad professor,monkey in the white house and a remake of van morrrisons brown eyed girl song with a ska beat makes this cd a must to have.

This album proves why the Skunks were one of the most popular bands in Texas in the late-70s/early 80s. The music is performed by my favorite version of the band. Almost all of their best-known songs are included. It doesn't sound dated to my ears 20 years later. Do the Earthquake Shake! Live...

This is by far one of the best punk cd's ever. i came across their music in a bodyboarding video and have never looked back. Amazon should get more of this cd in stock.

This cd stands up to multiple listenings! It has a variety of styles and beats.... great driving bass and the rythum section is out of this world ! Go get it -- you won't be sorry --- I'm just wondering where the second CD is?

If you like ska, this is an awesome Chicago ska sampler

I found this used and took a chance. Though I am not a reggae junkie, I am quite familiar with the earlier history of Jamaican popular music and was hip to people like the Skatalites and Augustus Pablo ten years before most people. After having had numerous Jamaican compiliations, I would say this is one of the freshest sets I've encountered. The music is crisp and I like the sharp, light touch of the production on most of the tunes. Highly recommended disc.
