Ska music review Polish Mountain Folk Music with a twist
Trebunie-Tutki is a family band coming from Polish Mountains, a region with a separate cultural identity, which for ages influenced Poland as a whole rather than the other way round. Although the ancestry of the mountain people (gorale) is mixed; mostly Polish, but with threads of the ancient, extinct nations that dwelled the medieval Europe - the highlanders have always been strongly loyal to Polish kingdom, identified themselves as Poles, more than the Poles themselves, actually. Their cultural uniqueness is endemic in Europe, and certainly this comment can also be applied to music.

It's hard to describe an instrumentarium to anyone who has never visited the southern extremity of Poland, since the instruments are as endemic as the nation, not to be seen anywhere in Europe or elsewhere, unless you venture to Chicagoland, where many highlanders emigrated to in the first part of XX century. Trebunie-Tutki also play classic instruments like violins and contra-bass.

It's indeed refreshing that Trebunie try to preserve the cultural heritage of the nation in these hard times of uniformity, standarization, commercialization and shallowness. It's not folk-stylized music, but it's the music of European roots, the core of these roots. This CD is unlike anything you might have heard in your life. I for one am grateful that they exist and preserve the tradition.

Tradition!!!

Buy this good cavemanly CD, and explore the traditional hearts of Polish highlanders.

Ska music review "when you think of reggae ~ think of Bob Marley & Wailers"
Rounder Records presents a journey back into the past with "Greatest Hits at Studio One", featuring Bob Marley and the Wailers. We're talking about Kingston, Jamaica in 1963 with Bob Marley, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, Bunny Livingston, Peter McIntosh and Cherry Smith who made up The Teenagers (another name), The Wailing Rudeboys (yet another name), The Wailing Wailers (yet another & another) and then they settled on The Wailers. We have now traveled back into that time thanks to this album. Great Britain's Island Records gave us the debut album "Catch a Fire" (1973), then came "Burnin'" later that same year, all featuring originality and talent supreme. Ask someone to name a reggae group, and the first name that comes to mind is naturally Bob Marley and the Wailers. An album loaded with the fresh new sound of a group destined for great heights. Original artwork, photos and liner notes that is the envy of every Marley fan. With songs inclusive "TREAT ME GOOD", "DREAMLAND", "SINNER MAN" and "I'M GOING HOME", is an essential part of any collection. This is the real jewel, most of which have never appeared anywhere on compact disc...particular songs that clearly mark the history of Reggae. This one sounds and is too good to pass up.

Ska music review Do Rock Steady!
I was blown away the first time I heard these songs in their original versions, by the original artists, on this CD. I'd heard UB40's covers, and, while those versions are good, in my estimation they're just not as rich as the originals. Really outstanding, on this album are: Sweet Sensation, by Larry Marshall & The Freedom Singers (the harmonies are incredible); Johnny Too Bad, by Dennis Brown (better, I think, than The Slickers' version on The Harder They Come soundtrack); and Here I Am Baby, by Owen Gray. If you liked the UB40 versions, give these a try. You just might like them better. Much better.

Ska music review Classic!!
This cd is abolutely wonderful. UB40 has redone all of these songs and become famous off of them. The originals are classic. I love #1. It's Vintage Dennis and perfect! This is the perfect cd to listen to after a long day or when you want to really relax and smile. If I listen to it right before bed, I have a peaceful sleep with happy dreams. Seriously. Just get it.

Peace and love.

Ska music review another gem
"Guns Don't Argue," released in 1971, was Alcapone's sophomore effort, but there is nothing spohomoric about it at all.

The tracks show an amzing growth in a period of mere months betweem his debut lp "Forever Version" and this one. His maturity level is startling for a man who was only 23 when it was recorded. All that being said, the lp is a giant leap forward for Alcapone, and certainly solidified his place in the inner sanctum of toasters, ranking with U-Roy as undisputed master of the style.

The price is a bit much, as it is an import cd, and I realize that, but fans of the toasting style will quickly admit that this is a small price to pay to hear greatness, and I would fully concur with them. This album is a gem among gems and well worth the small splurge on the credit card and the wait to get it. You won't regret it once you get it.

The song "Latin Goes Ska" is worth the price of any cd alone. This record is the best compilation of true ska recordings in history. I might also suggest that it goes great with Operation Ivy.

Ska music review Gunslingers an excellent showcase of TSPO's history
The sound quality (despite it being a live album) is first-rate. The tracks include songs from their latest album (Full Tension Beaters) as well as Skaravan and Tin Tin Deo from their early days. It's this kind of CD that makes you wish you could see TSPO live. The playing is excellent. Fortunately, crowd noise is kept to a minimum, thereby not intruding on the music. As usual, the band covers a wide range of styles: jazz, ska, straight-ahead rock, a slow song or two. The stand-out track would be Bridgeview: what begins as a mutated bass sax improv turns into a fast-paced, ska freakout! This is album is highly recommended.
