Jamaican music pioneer-bass man Byron Lee's career trajectory has to be the oddest on the island. This collection features Lee's big band flexing out over rock steady, a horn-filled, gently lilting '60s form that eventually became reggae. While everyone else went along as rock steady mutated into the more raucous ska and then reggae, Lee decided to play to a different drumbeat. Instead of moving forward, Lee traveled back to steel pan-based calypso, a form created in Trinidad and Tobago and once popular in Jamaica. Today Lee is best known for single-handedly reviving his home island's calypso-soca scene, mainly through founding Jamaica's own Carnival festival, which grew quickly into a huge, week-long event, packed with enough Dionysian fury to attract hordes of Trinidadians. But this Lee set is not his usual riotous bacchanal. Featuring rock steady's finest anthems, written by a galaxy of its star singers--including Derrick Harriott, Stranger Cole, and a very young Bob Marley--and covered by the Dragonaires' five vocalists, it presents Lee's outfit in a surprisingly decorous--and more appealing--mood. --Elena Oumano
Average review score:

Just the best! From start to finish, Rock Steady Intensified is simply the best of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. The exuberance of the opening track hits you where you live. There are some great relationship/love tracks, a tribute to Marley (Nice Time), and a tribute to culture (Ride Your Donkey). Do not play this while driving, as rocking to the beat that you will have to do can be distracting. Play this CD when you are down and you won't be down for long. Play it when you feel up and you will maintain the feeling. If you are not yet a rock steady fan, this is a great "starter" CD.

The Hickboy OshLoved this CD. If you are into First, Second or Third wave Ska you are going to Love it too. New guys to Ska Get this Cd and See where it all Came from. Even if you never have heard of Ska if you like big bands with lots of horns you'll completely enjoy this CD. This is Great old stuff with a ton of soul. All you Old rudies and Baldies If you don't already own this shame on you. It also comes complete with a relatively thick booklet talking all about the beginning of Ska and the history of Carlos Malcolm and his group. Sound Quality is great as well. I couldn't recommend it enough.

Doctor Manette has my cure. (what a lame title!)This is one of the best cds i have picked up in quite a long time. "The Same Thing Over and Over" is a catchy title, but far, far from the truth. Every song on this cd is distinctly different, but Dr. Manette has such smooth transistions, so the album does not seem schizophrenic. It has a great flow to it, and is one of those cds that just begs to be listened to the whole way through. The chicago-native five piece plays modern ska with punk, emo, funk, metal and rock influences, for a sound similar to Mu330 or the Impossibles, and theres definately some Weezer influence involved here. The songs are upbeat, friendly, and meaningful, with catchy harmonies, solos, and hooks that will leave you begging for more. Unfortunately, the band has broken up, so this album is your only chance to hear a great band with a unique sound.

great music,I have to agree with the previous reviewer and rolling stones on this one. It's nearly impossible not to tap your feet and bounce around to wonderful tracks like "Never Not Alone" and "Punk". They also mix in some nice slower tracks like "Friends Again", which displays their wide range of talents and ability to create different moods. I'm not even sure how to classify "It's Weird" which is just plain one of the coolest songs ever made. This may not have been their most popular album but it's far and away their best. Any fan of English Beat should like and enjoy this album. The only weak track in my opinion is "Big Bed", but that's just weak in comparison to how great the rest of this album is. I saw these guys live in San Diego back in 1995 and they were awesome, it's a real shame they didn't have more success with this album and continue to put out more. Definitely worth buying. Enjoy.
A member of the underrated hall of fame!General Public broke up after this 1995 album do it being considered a 'let down' for people expecting a 'better' come back from the British dynamic duo of Dave Wakeling and "Rankin'" Roger. It is instances like these where I distruss the public as well as the critics. The only other person who loved this album besides me was a critic from Rolling Stone who also gave it five stars, which means a classic. Every song on this album certainly sounds like a classic and the entire album will resonate in your brain even after the first listen. With it's catchy synthesiser and guitar riffs and melodic hooks, this would make for a masterpiece for those of you who a)liked the English Beat, Genral Public's former incarnation or b)genrally love the fusion of Reggea and Pop. With Roger's Jamaican-style rapping and Wakeling's romantic lead vocals, 'Rub It Better' is a must-have in your record collection.
