Slave Call
Released in Audio CD by Heartbeat Records (15 July, 1992)
Amazon base price: $16.98
Used price: $7.84
Buy one from zShops for: $10.99
Artist: The Ethiopians

Tracks:
  • Ethiopian National Anthem
  • Slave Call
  • Guilty Conscience
  • Hurry On
  • Nuh Follow Babylon
  • Train To Skaville
  • Culture
  • Obeah Book
  • Let It Be
  • I Love Jah
Deep nyabinghi drumming and chanting on a version of the Ethiopian national anthem gets things underway on Slave Call, a majestic journey through the spiritual roots of reggae. Later songs add guitars, bass, keyboards, and horns to build a more standard reggae sound on that foundation, but there's always a dignified restraint and the profundity of the nyabinghi beat. This is not your jumping-around reggae; it's more suited to a solemn procession, although the tempo picks up a bit for the joyous sound of a version of "Train to Skaville," The Ethiopians' signature song. Just as the Ethiopian national anthem is a recital of Rastafarian creed rather than that country's real national anthem, there's a Rastafarianized version of "Let It Be" that demonstrates the truly inspiring universality of any soulful music. Slave Call belongs in all serious reggae collections. --Jonathan E.

Ska music review doesn't get much more soulful
this is not our typical "happy-go-lucky" reggae album. i love this type of reggae. it has a perfect blend of seriousness and good old fashion reggae beats and rythms. if you are into nyabinghi drumming, and soulful chants, and great music, BUY THIS ALBUM!!

Ska music review Byron Lee is the best!
Soca is one of the main sounds here in bermuda and when Byron Lee comes down here every summer I never miss a concert! His music is so up beat and fun and the tunes are catchy! I'm so glad I was raised a Bermudian - I love this stuff! He can take any song (ie My Love is your Love by whitney Houston) and turn it into a soca hit. I love him!

Ska music review Rude Boys Unite
This compilation is an outstanding introduction to the unique "rude boy" genre of '60s Jamaican music. These light-hearted and amusing songs pay tribute to the often violent lifestyles of urban youth. Many of the themes (and a few of the songs) turn up later in the film "The Harder They Come". The audio here is raw and authentic, the music original and inventive. A must for fans of Caribbean music.

Ska music review Excellent Canadian Ska/Punk
the Undercovers, with only one album, are the most serious threat yet for the throne of Canuck Ska, currently held by the Kingpins. The use of keyboards, Kraftwerk meets Booker T.,works really really well. The future bodes well for the Undercovers. Hope they do some serious damage!

Ska music review Bob Marley is god
No doubt the best of the soothing beats of reggae's king. There is no better feeling than sticking this in the old stereo and zoning out to peacefullness of Marleys music. No contest that this is a greatest hits of all greatest hits. If you enjoy reggae Marleys the one for you. With hits like I shot the Sherriff and Jamming you cant go wrong. Buy this cd!!

Early reggae artists were known for plucking obscure American soul and R&B gems from obscurity by giving them a revitalizing reggae makeover. As reggae gained status and took on the credo of the emerging Rastafarian faith, it found its own voice and message. Still, reggae's always had a core of soul, and the merger makes sweet sense. U.S. indie label Pow Wow has made waves with three rock-to-reggae cover records, so it's totally fitting and somewhat overdue for reggae to rewind to its past with these 15 interpretations of some of America's leading soul anthems by a reggae vocalist elite. The marriage of material and talent here is consistently tasty, and it's hard to single out favorites. But Al Brown--a Toots Hibbert sound-alike--with Skin, Flesh & Bones delivers a rousing reggaematic version of "Here I Am Baby" that captures that old soul feel. The inimitable Big Youth wails the heck out of "Wake Up Everybody." Derrick Harriott's cover of "The Loser" was a huge hit back in the day, and it makes a great fit in this collection. John Holt, former lead singer for the Paragons, draws every possible nuance from "Never, Never, Never" with that smooth crooning style. Reggae's crown prince, Dennis Brown, whose towering career was built on a canny balance between covers and searing originals, contributes his interpretation of "Let Me Down Easy"; Ken Boothe, one of the music's finest veteran singers in a funky soul-man mode, turns it loose for "(It's the Way) Nature Planned It." The Heptones kill with music on "Swept for You." A lilting rhythm track underpins Chosen Few's sublime "Everybody Plays the Fool," and Slim Smith's rendition of "Sitting in the Park" possesses a hushed, exotically accented aura that elevates it even above the original. So it goes throughout, with equally revelatory turns by Toots & the Maytals, the Techniques, and Tony Jay with the great Alton Ellis that should appeal equally to reggae fans and any connoisseur of soulful music, no matter what the genre. --Elena Oumano

Ska music reivew jammin'
This CD is pumped full of energy, above average for even a great ska album. My only complaint is that there is no change in tone through the whole CD.

Ska music review Lots of nonsense, but good nonetheless.
Words that can describe this cd: crazy, nutty, outrageous, and any of their synonyms... I never thought I'd hear "butt cheeks" in a song... until I heard "I Don't Wanna Be No(J.B.J.)", a song which clearly mocks John Bon Jovi's career. Humorous definitely explains this song. Then there is "I don't Seem to Care", which if taken seriously is utter stupidity. However if you realize that you should simply take it with a grain of salt, it's yet another humorous song. All of the songs on this cd follow a punk/ska style as far as I can tell. And by the way, "Irish Drinking Song" is the best one on the cd.

Ska music reivew A mixed bag...
This CD is a mixed bag. One or two songs are actually OK, but most are not up to snuff, and a couple just plain suck! The mix of old and new doesn't work. It sounds contrived and doesn't have the right vibe.

Ska music reivew Worst Marley Album to date!!
The Over dub took away his reggae roots. All Fans of Marley Be Warned This is bad!

Ska music review Great Album
Lots of great RARE unheard tracks such as; gonna get you, rock steady, and stay with me.
