Ska music reivew Note:This is a current review.
I have always liked the Ernies for their uniqueness, but for some reason, I got tired of listening to it. Its all cool, and has funny lyrics, awesome chorus, and great saxophone solos, but still, it IS all the same as another reviewer mentioned. Still, you should try it out if you are into Ska, Punk, Rock, or whatever. (For a quick laugh and a very temporary favorite band.) It is a very cool, and funny album, but it gets old really quick, and the lead might drive you up the wall with his... unique singing talet... but it REALLY gets old. Ocassionlly I still listen to it, but it doesn't have as much of a charm as before.

Ska music review I Want Something Real
It's Digestible! The Ernies rock, and they rock hard. Their first album was pure old school ska, but by Meson Ray they have toned up into more of a 3rd wave, 311-esque rock. The lyrics are amazing, absolutely stunning dropping science. A clip from "It's Digestible":

"Q-tip's pop says that hip-hop reminded him of be-bop and now there's something called trip-hop so like Thucydides, let's check the histories in the hopes of clearin' up any mysteries: hip-hop, be-bop, ragtime to jazz, takin' it to that afro-cuban pizzazz, r&b, gospel and blues, how could you lose the connection to rock but hip-hop and rock are only two-thirds of the tryptic the other panel, it's a little more eclectic like ska, in the first wave, to 2tone, to third wave, to reggae, to dub, to trip-hop to techno, to disco, it all comes down to afro-caribbean rhythms and something more incredible, the universe entertaining itself in a way that's digestible..."

Sweet down home rude boys. Richmond couldn't be prouder and we are waiting for the reunion tour.

Ska music review Heh heh
This is real good stuff. Ska isn't my favorite genre, but The Ernies make it seem that way while listening to them. "Fire" and "Here and Now" are extremely awesome. These guys also have a sense of humor. Their choice of words are very intelligent, but they do it in such a funny way. Check it out if you aren't one of those blockheads that think music has to be serious.

Ska music reivew Nice combo CD, from a great band.
It's pretty simply stated that LTJ has worked hard to accomplish this collection of ska music. However, some of the songs are too crazy to handle, in my opinion. I've been a great fan of LTJ for a long time, but "Pez Collection" has been losing its firm grip.

Ska music reivew This CD isn't that great; gets really old
LTJ's "Pez Collection" used to be my favorite CD. It had all of LTJ's greatest hits, like "Son of Dick" and "One Last Cigarette". However, as time went by, this CD faded from me. I used to listen to it all the time, but now, it's collecting dust in it's slot in my CD holder.

Ska music review Awesome Collection
This CD is awesome. It takes many of the greatest early Less Than Jake songs and puts them all together on one great CD. This is a great album to add to the collection of any serious LTJ fan.

If the mainstream success of No Doubt and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones has whet your appetite for third-wave ska-and you're an open-minded skanker who welcomes the gonzo mixin' and matchin' of musical genres-you'll agree that Chicago's Blue Meanies are one of the finest bands in the universe. The second full album by these seven over-amped lunatics combines ska, early Replacements-styled punk, free jazz, Captain Beefheart, and klezmer music, with the kitchen sink (or at least a bit of theremin) thrown in for good measure. This is party music for the new millennium, but tunes like "The 4th of July" (about the Oklahoma City bombing) and "The Great Peacemaker" (a diatribe about handguns) will make you think while you're moshing. Ska music reivew This band is TERRIBLE
I saw this band live at a Less than Jake show and another time with Mustard Plug. These guys are the worst band I have ever heard. I tried to avoid seeing them at the LTJ show but it didn't work. I feel dumber having sat through the show. Don't buy the CD, you will regret it!!!

Ska music review please...this album is a masterpiece
I HATE the fact that the Blue Meanies, a group that has incredible ingenuity and vituosity and an almost entirely original sound was ever pigeon-holed into the genre of Ska. Their having played alongside mediocre, run-of-the-mill punk/ska acts throughout their entire existance is a true tragedy...they were never given the attention they deserved and never found their way to the ears of a broad enough audience. This album should have inspired a whole new genre of music. The energy in this music is unparalleled. It is hateful, chilling, unpredictable and uncontrolable (and also, in a sort of twisted way, incredibly fun). The Blue Meanies aren't deliberately combining genres. You certainly won't find any Klezmer here, although I would argue that you can hear strong punk and avant-garde jazz influences. It also certainly isn't ska (anyone who can trace a real connection between this music and that of say, the Skatalites, deserves an award). Their sound really is original and different.

There are so many things that I love about the band. The wild guitar and organ sounds, the amazing horn lines, Billy Spunke's abrasive vocals and rebellious, exciting lyrics (reminiscent in some ways of Ginsberg)...This is arguably the best rock album of the nineties. If you have open ears this will blow your mind.

Ska music review Greatness
An insane collection of talent produce this pyscho circus music. There's two opinions of the Blue Meanies either you love them or you hate them. So preview the songs and decide whether they are great or awful to you.

Funky Kingston
Released in Audio CD by Trojan Us (11 September, 2001)
Amazon base price: $11.98
Used price: $6.52

  • REDEMPTION SONG
  • DADDY
  • FUNKY KINGSTON
  • IT WAS WRITTEN DOWN
By 1975, rock audiences were finally getting heavily into reggae, thanks to the success of Bob Marley's first two albums and Jimmy Cliff's soundtrack for The Harder They Come. Funky Kingston, a collection of early '70s Maytals singles, was released to capitalize on the newfound demand for Jamaican sounds, and it did not disappoint--nor will it disappoint anyone who comes across it today. With Toots Hibbert's gritty vocals at the fore, this is the closest reggae ever got to American soul music. If sublimely funky tracks such as "Time Tough," "Got to Be There," and "Pressure Drop" don't make you smile, then their ganja-laced cover of John Denver's "Country Roads" (complete with a shout-out to "West Jamaica") should definitely do the trick. --Dan Epstein

Ska music reivew WARNING!! Don't believe it!
This CD does NOT contain the 10 songs that [are listed]!!
Rather it contains the 8 songs you can see on the cover picture. For example, Country Road and Pressure Drop is NOT included. This is not the Funky Kingston album but a collection of songs from that album and some others. Buy the real Funky Kingston album instead!!

Ska music review NOT A RIPOFF
This album is not a ripoff. Clearly Amazon has either attached the wrong editorial review to to this album, or they have simply not reviewed it at all. As one reviewer pointed out, this is not the 1975 Island album of the same name. This is a Trojan cd release of the original 1973 Jamaican album from Dragon. Its strengths are the title track and the classic "Pomps and Pride," as well as different versions of "Louie Louie," "Redemption Song," and "It Was Written Down" than you will hear elsewhere. This album is a must for true Maytals fans and collectors. If you're new to them, you should get the later version from Island records.

Toots is the best, if you can see him live, do so. He may not be young but the man can dance. Toots should be given more credit for what he has done in reggea and ska.

Ska music review Who cares if it's only 25 minutes long
This album is amazing, the finest skacore/punk you'll find. If you liked 17 Reasons, you'll love this. It's a must have for any Link 80 fan in fact. If you like fast and energetic ska mixed with hardcore breakdowns and raw punk vocals, then DEFINITELY get this. It's short, but it's cheap and can be easily listened to many times.

Ska music review Must Have
I would say this is one of my favorite cds ever, and it is definately the best Link 80 cd out there. I love every single song on it, and can listen to it over and over again. It's too bad Nick is no longer with us, he was great. His energy is amazing. You also have to check out 17 Reasons.

i have listened to all link80 cds and knowledge cd,this album is by far the best cd. favorites are better than sh*t, kind of,nothing left and the truth of it. i live in sf and i was at the nick traina tribute show. he was a better singer than any of the singers in any band there. you should listen to this cd before you buy any other. Ska music review This is good stuff
I really like this CD. They are the first ever satanic ska band, and they are highly enjoyable. I love the horns and the vocals are alright also. Songs I enjoyed: Attack Of The Geniuses, Break Your Ankle Punk, Bad Toupee, Satan On The Beach, Aliens, Safe, Demon Weed, Introducing The Yellow Passion, Foursome, Snack Pack, Plan B, Turtle Soup, Scram. That tells you something... I didn't like break your ankle punk, but other then that one this CD has to be one of the best I own. Go buy it now.

Ska music review Great new sounds from the darkest ska band around
I loved God Bless Satan, but it took me a while for this one to grow on me. After it did though, I loved it. Mephiskapheles has such a great variety of style in each song, and it makes for great music. There are so many great songs in this album. My one complaint is the album is too short. I really wish each song was longer, since there can never be too much of a good thing when it comes to music.

Ska music reivew Good CD. That simple.
MU330 is a great band which has been around for awhile. These guys have made a great CD here, and it's worth your money. My advice: this is the best MU330 cd, get it before the others.

Ska music review PRESS...uh....presses?
This was the first Mu330 CD I bought, and it took me a while to warm up to it. But then again, it took me a while to warm up to 'Chumps On Parade', and now, that's my favorite album of all time. But you know how when ya get an album, and at first, there was only one or two songs you liked, but later on, you started to like all the songs? That's sorta how 'Press' was.
I was just getting into ska, and this was on my list, so I bought it. Overall, this album packs a unique punch, a blend of rock, metal, ska, and...interesting music. The horns certainly do their part, and the vocals are hit or miss. Dan Potthast, Mu330's founder and core member (along with Ted Moll, Chris Diebold, and Rob Bell), who has a very nice voice, only sings three songs (four with the re-release, which I have), which also happen to be the best songs on the album. As for the other members, they do just as good. Dan's always ready to pound out a solo in the sea of tinny-sounding ska riffs, Chris and his wacky bass lines that are all over the neck, and Ted does perfect on the drums, entirely without the use of toms.

'Hoosier Love' is a fun ditty that I think I would appreciate a lot more if I was from Philly. It's a bouncy ska tune that you can't possibly be sad while listening to.
'Fleeba' is not a bad song, depending on your mood. It's sorta catchy, and it might have been better if Dan had vocalized it.
'Stuff' is a "romantic" little tune, and a damn catchy one at that. How can you not dance at parts to this?
'Bagelbird' has a catchy horn line (would the addition of a bari sax improve it?). However, the vocals are a bit annoying at points, and the chorus is kind of short and leaves something more to be desired.
'Spilled My Drink' is a laid-back love story, and although a bit long, is a good track.
'Press' is an okay track, not much ska, but it's okay.
'Didgets' is also an okay song. Catchy, although the chorus is repeated quite a few times.
'Danceska' is another vocal treat from Dan, and how can you not laugh at the most unromantic love song of all time? This is a gem.
'Captain' is another fun treat, with a really bouncy guitar part, and interesting choruses. What they were trying to accomplish, I don't know...
'Safety Boots' is a kick-ass track, even though is has less than 10 lines of words. The horn line is PERFECT heavy ska that just makes ya wanna skank all night long.
'Kong' is good, but at what price. Dan sings, which is good, however, the verse and chorus are the same, yet are repeated, like, four times. But it's still rather catchy.
And 'Fist Fulla Nuts', one of the bests. One of my favorite horn lines of all time, this one will make ya wanna dance all day.

'Press' is a yes. Buy. Now. Fool.

Ska music review me love MU330
MU330 are so kewl! I'm so glad that "Press" and the self titled were teh first ones i got! I can listen to "Spilled my drink" or "stuff" (which is my anthem) like a million times. If you're juuust getting into them this is the peeerfect one the get! Or the self titled if you'd rather get to know them a little bit more before you decide if you like them. But "Press" is the bess'... me love MU330!

Ska music reivew Loved Them As Soon as I Heard Them
The Code put up a video for the song "Riot" on youtube.com After checking it out I suggest you pick up this album. Its really good ska/punk and pretty catchy and easy to listen to and love. Not the best band ever, but they are definatly up there.
Bottom Line: Excellent band, excellent album.

Ska music review Awesome Band
This album is as awesome as the guys in the band. If you're a fan of underground ska/punk/hard-rock, whatever this album is your ticket to audio bliss. I happen to know the band and they are really cool and down to earth. If you like Anti-Flag, Social D, and old school punk, just do it.

Ska music review SWEET!
I've known about The Code for a little while now, but never got around to buying their CD. I just got it yesterday and man, let me tell you, awesome. Just awesome. It's skacore at it's finest. I can easily recommend this anyone who likes punk. It is more punk than ska. I guess some people don't like them because they are christain, but they don't preach about it in their songs, so they're not gospel or anything. It really is good stuff.
