Ska music reivew Great music, poor recording
I love the music but the quality of sound on this CD is like an old record was dubbed to tape and then made into this CD.

Ska music review Jackie - The Great
Jackie Opel was one of the greatest if not the greatest singers that Barbados has produced. This cd is very good even though the scratches can be heard from the record. Long live his music.

Ska music review I Remember Those Friday Nights At The Movie Theatre
Going to the movie theatre every Friday night to see the movie dance craze was one of the most memorable highlights of my younger years! The album was and always will be a classic! I just keep checking every year or two to see if someone decides to put the film out on DVD. WHY HASN'T ANYONE DONE THIS YET??!! I keep telling my children how I wish I could share this film with them.

Ska music review Wha's notta lyke?

Ska music review A Must Own
This cd is a shining representation as to why the NYC Ska scene was so awesome. This band has that sound that makes you want to get up and dance. Perfect chill out music. This band was on par with The Slackers and Stubborn Allstars. An excellent cd.

Ska music review Greatest NYC Ska Album Ever!
Having burst onto the mid-90's ska scene a little late, I fell victim to many of the not-so-good third-wave ska-punk groups.....Then I picked up a copy of Eleven Steps to Power, and it changed my definition of what good music was. Regrettably I was never able to see the Insteps perform, but that hasn't stopped me from proclaiming this album as one of the greatest ever! It opened my eyes to some other great acts in NYC and has been in my radio ever since. Eleven Steps to Power turns a bad day good, and makes a good day great! I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes music with soul, heart, and some awesome brass.

Ska music review overlooked classic
It's too bad the insteps broke up the way they did. While most of the music produced by american ska bands in the mid nineties has, sometimes in retrospect, (whereas more often no hindsight was required) proved to be total [junk] (Cousin Oliver, anyone?) eleven steps to power is a pretty brilliant album, emotionally potent, musically proficient, and lyrically on par with and representative of the best of the ska-rocksteady-reggae genres. While it was released in 96, this disc is hardly an anachronism five years later. Gems like "every slacker is a star" and "free advice" still ring with as much depth and power as when i bought the disc from the old moon storefront (RIP) all those years ago. Chances are, if you actually stumbled on this page, then you probably've already heard the disc, as there really aren't that many people buying independent ska releases just on a whim these days. Nevertheless, if you haven't picked this cd up, do so. You won't regret it.

Ska music review Corporate Monkey Jumps!
Can't stand the Corporate Monkey? , YOU'RE FIRED! This joint features the fresh horn of Will Haines, an old school reggae and ska trumpeteer and paramedic, and the incomporable stylings of the one and only Googie Rankin, (Toasters & other small appliances). Tony skanks like he's finally in the Gulf to ride that bi-annual 10 footer. May be the the last chance to catch Bruce on T-Bone with these guys. If you EVER get an opportunity to see these guys live , (okay, you won't, outside of Sarasota,FL)
I can't say enough about this band, if you like ska... if you like reggae... if like you horns and hi-hats,with a driving bassline, Corporate Monkey will be in your head. Thier rendition of Miles Davis's "All Blues" raises the dead to the dance floor. Check out the website if you can't see them live.

Ska music reivew Skacore at its best
This CD is a very kickass, and hard to find item. If u cant find it go to pricegrabber.com cuz thats were i got mine at. in my opinion this cd is better then squattas paradise and no gods / no managers bcuz its not over produced (maybe not produced at all). i couldnt find this cd on tent city's web site or anything. you damn well better buy this cd cuz its better then leftover crack or any other CV cd's. to bad they broke up tho.

Ska music review great squatstyle punk-ska
This demo isn't as good as CV's cd No Gods/No Managers (which isn't on Amazon...) because the recording quality is quite bad, but if you can look past that it is a brilliant collection. Sloppy guitars and great innovative ska-punk chords and beats make CV unique. You will never hear another band that sounds like this (apart from Leftover Crack, because it is made up of a few members of CV). I recommend this demo to anyone who likes real punk, not blink 182 or poppy s*** like that, and especially to anyone who likes hard fast sloppy punk.

Ska music review real punk
at last a true punk band comes to the stores. too bad they broke up.

Ska music reivew nice but not quite what i was looking for...
i bought this when i went into a store to ask this one guy who was into industrial/gothic type music, if there's any kind of music that combines the elements of trance and industrial. origionally i was looking for something that would be the perfect combination between paul oakenfold's tranceport, and the really noisy nin songs like heresy, reptile, and the big come down. you know, the noisy grating kind of stuff, with lots of pounding metallic drums.

he recommended this compilation because it featured many artists, some of which i'd heard of(velevet acid christ, front line assembly), some not(funker vogt, vnv nation), and was pretty cheap. so i picked it up and while it is enjoyable, it is easily a lot more trance than industrial. it's got the nice soothing string synthesizers, mixed together with really fat bass synths and distorted skinny puppy-style vocals/chicks with strong voices(think kmfdm).

for the most part, this is pretty danceable, the music hops along at a nice pace, and while it can sound pretty, the distorted vocals add a welcome edge. think of a slightly underproduced skinny puppy album remixed by paul oakenfold on a so-so day. no question, though, there are some great tunes on here that i'm liking the more i hear(tracks 1,3,4,8,9, especially), but in the end this isn't quite what i had in mind.

if anyone knows of some good noisy trance/industrial like i'm looking for. please email me. preferably something along the lines of a really distorted drum and bass album, or like meatier versions of 'only good christian is a dead christian', and 'superkalafrajilisticsadomasochism', both by foetus. industrial beats with meat. someone has to know what i'm talking about.. please contact me! i need music!

Ska music reivew A good intro to EBM and Industrial
Not a lot to say about individual tracks because, save one, they have been heard before. Yet that is part of what makes this album a good choice to the fan, casual listener, or curious. The selection of tracks is suitably mild and danceable. Even the Wumpscut selection is one of the more mellow songs they do. As an addition to a collection, this grouping makes for good listening or dancing. For the un-initiated, think of NIN, but not as guitar heavy. Stand out tracks - Wumpscut - "Hang Him Higher", DIN_FIV - "Through the Looking Glass", VNV Nation -"Rubicon", and Apoptygma Berzerk "Soultaker".

Ska music review Exploration of the Unreleased Horizons
When looking for EBM music and the different flavorful coatings that it could come in, I found myself bumbling around and trying out everything I could get my hands on. Sometimes this proved to be a great way of finding things and other times it proved to be a disaster, but it left me longing for an easier way to Discern whether something was worthwhile or not. That's when I first bumbled into samplers left by Metropolis in the forms of Electropolis and then, later on, in the form of Critical Mass. These compilations were something of an impressive outing in many rights, because they managed to string together many a band that was worth listening to on albums that I would have thought to be less of an impact, knowing that most compilations are filled to the brim with disposable tracks by disposable bands. Still, when it comes to the things that this label puts out, or has put out thusfar, this is far from the case. Instead, they were using their samplers as a pedestal from which to preach and I, a needy apostate, listened on.

Amongst many of the releases that come in this form, most of the tracks aren't new or are simply remixes. That's why I like this one because it does actually have a new song amidst the experimental mixes as well. Yes, First and foremost amongst the listings on the albums is the release from Funker Vogt, Horizon, that isn't available in any other forum. Its a good piece, with the standard lean into technotronic aggression that they were taking at the time, making it a worthy track to own and one to listen to over and over again. For fans of the band and simple listeners alike, it makes this album, at its low price, worth picking up. Still, there's quite a bit more. Next, Cleaner, a soft version of the Metropolis family and one I enjoy quite a bit, adds its own EBM specialties with vocals that stand with melody and not distortion, giving them a purer, more techno sound. It seems odd to be mixed in-between Funker Vogt and then, then Wumpscut, but that also gives it something interesting to note as well. Wumpscut's Hang Him Higher is something you'd expect from the band, with dark melodies mixing in shadowy tones that seem to be the staple that the band is known for. Its something that is somewhat hard to find, too, so its a good piece to find added to this album. Din Fiv, Informatik's softer side, is showcased with Through the Looking Glass, something that is high in beat classification but that is different for people only accustomed to Informatik because the darkness has been lost and the exploratory nature of lyrics have been adopted in a more techno-oriented form. The notables go on and on (with no disrespect to any of them for listing them this way because I love them all), with Front Line Assembly's Retribution mixing with Covenant's Afterhours, one of VNV Nation's most expressive releases Rubicon, Apoptygma Beszerk's Soultaker, Decoded Feedback's Darkness Inside of Me, and Velvet Acid Christ doing their thing before the fear of exploration overtook their need to press forward. In many a sense, it was probably one of the best samplers I've ever laid my hands on.

For anyone looking to see the softer side of the EBM rainbow without sacrificing beats or skill, this might be a good place to look. While it does have pieces that are a bit dark within it and a few that are driven, it isn't as heavy as the outing provided in the Electropolis releases and is a good introduction to what Metropolis has to offer. Besides, this disk is filled with bands that I would consider worthy of anyone's attention, so much so that it was hard for me to actually list them without providing in-depth expressions on each and every flavor. Regardless of objections I've seen, this comes HIGHLY recommended.

Ska music reivew They call it Jive! I call it a great cd!
The Ernies prove with this CD that they are one of the greatest bands that nobody has ever heard of. Giving listeners of every sort of music something to jam to. The first three songs of the album (Jive!, Put You In The Back, and Kickin It Live are upbeat, combining elements of rap, ska, and good old fashion rock and roll. Lead singer Will Hummel shows an amazing amount of variety not only in his vocals, but in his sometimes philosophical lyrics. There in only two things keeping this cd from getting a five star rating. Get it straight though, if there was a 4 and a half star rating, that's what it would've got! First, the cd, as great as it is, is far too short, it's really sad to see it end, some cd's are better short, but you'll be wishing there was 30 tracks by the end! Second, the track, "The New One," seems to be a filler track to supplement the short album. Though this track is followed up by the great "Flesh and Bone." They save the best for second to last, as their hit "Motivate", as seen in the movie "BaseketBall," is worth the price of the CD alone. If you're in the mood for an extremely fun album that will make you jump, look no further. "Dropping Science is as good as they come!

Ska music review 'The New one'... song name, amazing song.
The Ernies, not really available in the UK, so I had to wait the lond shipping time to get my hands on the two most recent albums, but it was more than worth it. Dropping science is the better of the two the other one, mason ray, is good, but this is really pure class. The song not so well named the new one is by far my favorite, altho some else who reviewed this album thinks otherwise! It doesn't sound like any thing else you can get your hands on, if you know of any other bands who can write songs in the style of 'Jive' 'Everywhere' 'new one' and the last song (some times know as countng days, some times not) let me know. ASAP.

Ska music review Wow! Check this cd out, it's great!
This is such a good cd. By listening to it you can see how much their style has changed since their debut seld-titled album. They have so much talent, and are sure to get bigger through the years. It makes me proud to say that these 5 guys are from my hometown of Richmond,VA. Jive on!!!

Overshadowed by their Mexican rock brethren and hugely popular Los Caifanes in Mexico in the early '90s, Maldita Vecindad nonetheless carved out a niche as the best south-of-the-border rock-punk-ska outfit. This CD helped put them on the map in 1991 and opened doors for subsequent U.S. tours. From the frenzied ska fever on "Pachuco" to the casual salsa-samba hints in "Kumbala," Maldita play a wide range of worldbeat rhythms. Instantly catchy is the melodic "Tono," with hard, snapping beats and tense bass lines producing cool dance-rock rhythms. But the band also displayed its taste for humor on the offbeat "Pata de Perro" rocker and infused the horn-driven "Un Poco de Sangre" with just a smidgen of soul. --Ramiro Burr

Ska music reivew Refreshing Mexican Rock
Bueno, unlike all the rest of you all I am not going to give 5 stars to a CD that is mearly very good, and this CD is. Maldita, has a quick funk/ska/punk/latin sound that complaments the real feeling of Ciudad de Mexico's modern rock scene....... that I was fortunate enough to get to know last year. This band is important to Mexican rock,as that it has not sold out as so many Mexican rock groups do. The best song on the album (in my opinion) is Pachuco (if you need to wake up a party put this song on). The whole CD is tight, and in my top 10 in Spanish.

Ska music reivew Save your money
I recently purchased this album at a local record store and the sound quality of the live rehearsal tracks is terrible, and in my opinion are barely listenable. Your beter off purchasing the Brisbane Australia '79 or the Miami '80 Japanese releases, as the sound quality is much better of those performances.

Ska music review A Collector's Gem
Tracks 1-4, and 10 are studio rehersal takes. The sound quality is somewhat poor; the bass is too high and the vocals are set too low. However, Bob's voice does sound good and these tracks are of interest because of the improvisation. Crazy Baldheads is not really a "dub" version of this song, but is a good alternate recording nonetheless. Tracks 5-8 are "dub" versions of Marley songs; 3 of them off of the album Kaya, and have good sound quality. As an avid Marley collector, I know these tracks are hard to come by and they are a prized addition to my collection. I highly recommend this album to the Bob Marley collector.

Ska music review DUB, finally
The dub tracks in the middle of this album (Crazy Baldheads really shouldn't be noted as dub) are what I have been craving all these years. To finally find some dubbed Marley to this extent is, well, it's unheard of, pardon the pun. All too often I find dubbed Marley music that is more suitable in a karaoke section (the music is there, the lyrics are gone). This is Bob doing dub. This is different. This is DUB! There is a noticeable difference in sound quality between the dub tracks (5-8) and the rest of the album. All tracks are very heavy on the base side, but the producers, in infinite wisdom, seemed to let tracks 5-8 survive. Ras Tafari. This is a CRUCIAL Marley album!!! For the mock Rastas, pick up this Marley album and then grab Tappa Zuckie In Dub; you're ready...
