I am very proud of these songs. Some of the best work of my life. I still hum them while I do dishes. Working and touring with Evan was absolutely incredible.

  • Life Short Call Now

  • Beautiful Creatures

  • This Is Baghdad
  • Jerusalem Poker
  • Different When It Comes To You

  • Nude Descending A Staircase
Four decades and 29 albums into his career, Bruce Cockburn has stood for many things: flawless musicianship, activist actions, and lyrics that effortlessly flow from touching to caustic many times throughout a single CD. It is fitting, then, that Ani DiFranco makes an appearance on Life Short Call Now, as the two world-class guitar players have strong political roots, both seeking to leave legacies that extend far beyond memorable melodies in the hearts and minds of their fans. Their lushly produced duet, "See You Tomorrow," has a slight zydeco feel, the only surprise is the lack of overt political bite in the track; a subsequent Cockburn song, "Tell the Universe," more than makes up for the subtlety with its anti-Bush commentary. "Mystery" is straight-up classic Cockburn, yet the inclusion of Ron Sexsmith, Hawksley Workman, and Damhnait Doyle is not just beautiful but also clever, as it shows the genealogy linking Cockburn's effect on subsequent Canadian songwriters. Familiar sounds aside, there is a wonderfully new commonality throughout this disc: Cockburn has included a 27-piece string section whose arrangements add not just richness to songs ("Beautiful Creatures" and "This Is Baghdad"), but powerfully dark counter-melodies as well. One of the most compelling pieces falls near the CD's end: "To Fit in My Heart" somehow manages to combine his love of jazz, worldbeat, and folk music into one gorgeous, haunting melody. It is rare indeed to see such an experienced musician continue to evolve, but Cockburn has done exactly that with this new disc. --Denise Sheppard

Urban Folk music reivew Life is short,Get this now.
I have got to admit this album is far better than his previous effort.Don't get me wrong I mean the one before his acoustic solo album. This album has all the richness and song writing one admires.Having been a fan for a long time its a treat to listen to craftmanship.Anyone putting this album down has a lot to learn about music. Its not about screaming vocals and guitars. Its about telling a story through music.BC has done it with this one!

Urban Folk music reivew life's short - ignore the kid
Since the other reviewers have done such a good job in unpacking the album I'll not attempt to do it again, but I will say that this is a good follow-up to `Speechless` and much richer in content to `You've Never Seen Everything`. I wouldn't pretend that this was Brucie's greatest-ever CD but it is much more engaging and enjoyable than most of the music released this year and it sits very well between the new albums of T-Bone Burnett & Paul Simon.

Thankfully BC has strayed away from Barbara Streisand territory this time (on YNSE he wrote a song based on an online hoax about George W. Bush) he still threw in a couple of songs to appease the leftist wing-nuts in his fanbase, but since he's always been concerned for all of mankind this is not a good enough excuse for the imperialists and neo-cons to keep this CD out of their collections. With everything kicking off again in the Middle East and fear and loathing in the west, a new Bruce Cockburn CD is almost as useful as a flashlight during a power outtage so buy it now.

(PS: - Disregard any comments as to the alleged simplicity of his music. These comments are more than likely originating from failed musicians who listen to too much progressive rock when they aren't scouring Brucie's lyrics for their next ambulance to chase. After 30 years "in the industry" BC has been able to keep delivering an original and creative product and this CD is no exception)

Urban Folk music review Excellent return to form!!
Thanks, Bruce, ....despite other mindless reviews,(where have people's ears gone these days, this , to me & a few close friends in England, is a far better album than Mr. Cockburn has made , in ages!!Thanks especially to the wonderful return of producer Jon Goldsmith, (Stealing Fire) these arrangements stick and make most of this album a great one....stand-out cuts being...title song (superb), Mystery, Baghdad(excellent), Tell the universe (incredible arrangement here!) , and the stunner Fit in my HEART!!!!!..TRACK OF THE C.D.!!!the insrumentals here don't particularly inspire , as of old, altho' Jerusalem poker is memorable! No, this is not the Bruce Cockburn of the 70's , or 80's, viz a viz World of Wonders , Stealing Fire, yet still this album is excellent, by any standards, especially as Bruce is STILL , possibly , the best singer-songwriter on this planet!!!Grrreat album , beats his last 2 , hands down!!!His voice sounds much more relaxed, too, than usual , grreat arrangements, ..just a great great pity there's NO real witness , any more , of his Christian Faith!!!WHY??? oH WELL, A GRREAT AND RECCOMMENDED ALBUM1buy!!
