What can I say? It's Andrew Calhoun, what can I say? This guy's the real deal. You'll never dance to a Calhoun song but then you won't ever sit up at night thinking about why that Abba song cut to the bone. They each have their place. So pick up this CD, grab a beer, get a fire going and let the man paint a picture of America with that guitar and that voice.

Biological determinists who find a poster boy in this 30-year-old singer/songwriter will miss just what's exceptional about the talent emerging on his second album. Certainly if your father were Richard Thompson, you'd have him play guitar on your record too. The son, however, has made an album as crafty in pop, lush in roots, and unguarded in emotion as any of his peers--and his sound, while clearly indebted to the acoustic foundations of British folk-rock, is his own fusion of L.A. singer/songwriter sweetness and Wallflowers-esque AOR rock. He's also finding his own way into songwriting, turning quotidian phrases into deadpan wit--"Being happy is easy if you're dumb," he sings on "That's Enough Out of You"--or letting everyday speech reveal a troubled honesty. "I can change my mind but not my blood," he admits on the title track, as strings and scuffling snare build tension. His arrangements leave ample space for his voice, a bell-bright instrument with a deceptive range, to open up his melodies. By layering harmonies from longtime pals Rufus and Martha Wainwright, as well as his mother, Linda Thompson, Teddy gives those melodies the shine, even ambition, of pop outreach--even if, as he sings on the opening track, he wants to "shine so bright it hurts." --Roy Kasten

TepidI foolishly bought this record based on the fame of his parents after hearing one cut on some NPR show. After listening several times through the album, wondering if I was missing anything, I felt compelled to write this review, particularly in light of all the 5-star reviews.
The lyrics are abysmally drab, one or two lines repeated blandly and endlessly at the end of songs in lieu of a bridge or an instrumental or a harmony or a real ending. On many of the songs, it's apparent that even he is bored to death singing these things. The musicianship is fine but as uninspired as the lyrics and vocal delivery. Each time I listened to it, I found myself hoping the next song would be the one that would make it all okay, somehow bring it all together. Finally, I found myself just wishing each song would be the last song.
Naturally, everyone has different tastes and reasons for listening to music. If you are a fan of well-written lyrics that complement an engaging and well-delivered melody, you will likely not appreciate this album. However, for fans of Richard and Linda Thompson who are curious to see what has become of their progeny, this may be interesting.

2 1/2 stars...After hearing TT sing harmony on a couple of tunes with his old man I had high expectations for his solo material. I was quite disappointed. TT's vocal capabilities are strong, but his songwriting is rather empty and vapid.
"A Title For My Review"With the exception of Everybody Move It, I love every song on this album. Also I'd like to mention that his voice is as beautiful live as it is on cd. I personally think he is a better singer than either one of his parents.
