Urban Folk music review Two great Dolly albums from 1971
I've been a lifelong Dolly Parton fan. I still enjoy listening to these early albums. They are a beginning of sorts and it's fun to listen to the evolution of her music. There is something very honest and pure about her from this period. The songs are interesting. I've never heard another singer write or sing songs like these. They are like little stories that she brings to life. This is a worthwhile compilation worth seeking out as it contains her albums JOSHUA and COAT OF MAN COLORS. Both are from 1971 and they contain songs that are very singer/songwriter, even though she writes most of her music, there's something special about these songs. Definately worth getting if you are a Dolly Parton fan.

Urban Folk music review Two 1971 solo classics
For an artist of Parton's stature, it's incredible that her towering early achievements are so spottily available on CD. Her brilliant solo albums of the early '70s - the sides waxed shortly after leaving Porter Wagoner and before crossing over to pop stardom - are mostly out of print. This two-fer provides two classic LPs of 1971, "Joshua" and "Coat of Many Colors." The latter has recently been returned to print in the U.S. by Buddha, but the former is only available on this import two-fer.

Throughout both albums, Parton weds gospel power, bluegrass harmonies and x-ray introspection to craft songs about her hard-scrabble Tennessee upbringing. She writes heartbreaking biography ("Coat of Many Colors"), impressionistic memories ("Walls of My Mind") and transforms personal emotions into dramatic fiction ("J.J. Sneed"). Each of these albums stand on their own as perfect examples of Parton's craft, but as a two-fer they provide nearly unimaginable musical riches in a single package.

Urban Folk music review Classic Dolly
This album features Dolly's two classic albums JOSHUA and COAT OF MANY COLORS. To my knowledge this is the first time JOSHUA has been available on CD, making this a must own CD for avid Dolly fans and collectors. These two albums are classics to me because they are Dolly's roots in music, when she was doing the story songs that had a great underlying message, if you look at her songs here a lot of them apply to simple meanings that unite us all. "Joshua" could be interpreted as a beauty and the beast type story, don't let appearances keep you from loving or getting to know someone. "Coat of Many Colors" is the most famous though, a tale of feeling rich in the rags that her mother sewed together in every stitch. This is the album to own if you want songs like that, simply beautiful simple songs from Dolly. Other highlights on this set include "Traveling Man", "My Blue Tears", "Letter To Heaven", "A Better Place To Live", "Here I Am", "The Last One To Touch me" and more. Overall a must have for all Dolly fans, its worth the extra money.

Urban Folk music review Great Collection of Ani Songs
This CD is definitely my favorite of all Ani albums. It adds the excitement of being at a concert & sheds light on her talent. Great for someone that has never heard Ani before. Definitely very righteous!!

Urban Folk music review An excellent album
Listening to Ani's music live is the best way to hear it. I think that this CD is better than buying her other CDs. SHe gives a powerful performance with delightful little snipits of showtime banter in between. One of my most coveted CDs. This is also a great way to be introduced to Ani if you don't own anything else of hers.

Urban Folk music review Ani Difranco's most popular songs, LIVE and on two cds!!!
These two cds have in almost all the most loved Ani Difranco songs. They are her best hits, live and have talking by Ani. By far one of her best releases--Great for a firsts-time ani fan or an old ani fan. A great CD.

Urban Folk music review Good CD
Just throwing my 2 cents in... I really like this CD. It's really good music. Calhoun is a 'folk' musician but Joan Baez this is not. More like John Prine or Bonnie Rait. The songs seem to be mostly stories from his life. Some big, some small. I think it's worth your time to try a few samples to see if its your style. That's how I got started on him.

Urban Folk music review Modern American Folk
Calhoun is one of the best songwriter/singer/poets around. His music is shaped by traditions as varied as Celtic, American Folk, and Chicago blues. His music and poetry ranges from John Prine to Robert Burns, Leonard Cohen to EE Cummings. It is at once contemporary and timeless.
The recurring theme of the cd is, like the mythical bird in the title, rebirth. Because he looks unflinchingly at life, many have called Calhoun's songs depressing, but they are the opposite. As he puts his finger on the source of each particular brand of suffering, he also finds out the reserves we possess to survive it. His finest images flash and cut deeply and yet each song has a quality of mercy.
This is a fine piece of American music, well worth having.

Urban Folk music review Best song poet writing today.
For real melodies, real poetry, get this CD. With his voice and a single acoustic guitar, this guy demolishes entire record stores of "popular" music.

Urban Folk music review Great Band!!!! Great CD!!!!! Great DVD!!!!!
I discovered Sonia Dada by accident.... and that was a good thing... the DVD is excellent and the album as a whole just blows you away. 'Moons of Jupiter' is obviously the flagship of the album, but that doesn't mean that the other songs are any less.... 'Saturday' and 'Dark Visions' are ecellent tracks as well. 'Diggin On A Road' falls back to the roots of Sonia Dadas Chicago Blues sound, but the other songs are just as good. I am a serious Sonia Dada fan now, and have just bought all their earlier albums as well.

I would recommend checking out www.soniadada.com to check out extras sounds and visions by the band.

Urban Folk music review Next Generation of music
I am a newer Sonia Dada fan (<3years). The music is top notch. It hosts thier normal talents (vocal and instruments). The reason I am writing this review is to showcase the DVD.

The center piece of the DVD is a 30 minute video. The video has most of the songs from the CD. In and of itself, the video is artistic and of the quality you would expect from Sonia Dada. The highlight for me is; the music that accompanies the video has been remastered to 5.1 audio; (remastered NOT converted).

The 5.1 remastered tracks makes this 30 minute segement the most impressive audio in a long time.

If you have a surround system you should purchase this DVD/CD. It may cause you to upgrade your system to live up to the quality of this DVD. If you already have a surround system that can handle more then the normal movie sound track, then you should buy this and invite all of your fiends over to make them jelousy (and share this experience).

Enjoy.

Urban Folk music review What a Find!
I found this band from a great compilation put together by an independent radio station in Bloomington, IN: www.wttsfm.com on their annual Collector's Edition CD. Old Bones is a great song. Great rhythms, harmonies, and cool lyrics. Got to love the free download!! I'll be buying this CD as a result. You can always count on WTTS to come up with new progressive sounds, and this is a keeper!!

A Child's Celebration of Soul

Music for Little People yet again proves its prowess at laying down grooves that both kids and their parents want to plug into with the 13th release in its exceptional Celebration series. A Child's Celebration of Soul is among the rare handful of kids' records that prompt a right-minded adult to reread the CD jewel case carefully, just to be sure its contents are no accident. Is it possible the same child who asks persistently for repeat plays of Barney's Greatest Hits might one day clamor instead for classic soul nuggets such as Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" and Aretha Franklin's "Respect"? Celebration effectively blankets the soul bases, offering a taste of everything from the blue-eyed variety to early Motown to the Memphis blues, light style. Better yet, a couple of these numbers--James Brown's fabulously funked-up "Get on the Good Foot" and Gladys Knight & the Pips' full-throttled "Friendship Train" in particular--deliver this music's roots, stitched tightly to the social themes of its time, to the table. A more festive, positive-vibe-producing opportunity to tackle the subject of racial unrest with the kids is not likely to arise; neither, for that matter, is the chance to cut the rug with one's very own rug rats to Robert Parker's "Barefootin'." Above all, this record is an onramp for lucky young listeners to the timeless sound of classic soul music, whose top talents even today remain musically unsurpassable. --Tammy La Gorce

Urban Folk music review funky fun
A terrific collection of soul favorites of the 60's and 70's, my baby and I have lots of fun carpet dancing to this CD. Unlike many other Music for Little People CD's where the songs have been completely redone, there are only a few changes to a couple of songs - "updated" with a little hip-hop. Otherwise, the songs are as you remember them.

Urban Folk music review A Child's Celebration of Soul
This is such a great disc that I enjoy listening to it even more than my son. Every child should have the pleasure of owning this. I plan to buy this for friends. Who doesn't like James Brown, Aretha and the Jackson Five?

Urban Folk music review A celebration of soul for all ages!
Keep your dancing shoes on because you and your little one(s) will dance all night with this CD on. All I need to do is hit play and my 2 yr. old son can't stop bopping. Enjoy great tunes from Ike & Tina to the Jackson 5.

Enjoy this cd, it will bring a sound so different to you that it will overtake your mind and body with a feeling so promised and cherished! Thank you Ani!

Urban Folk music review This woman can do no wrong....
This was the CD that introduced me to Ani, and in my eyes this woman can do no wrong. I bought this CD not long after it came out, her voice immediately grabbed me, and her lyrics held my attention. I have since been to see her every time she comes to town and bought all of her CDs. I know I'm too old to worship, but if I were to choose someone to feed the adolescent idolizing tenecies, this would definitely be the person I choose.

Urban Folk music review One of the best singer-songwriter albums on the planet!
Every song on this album is a gem, what a great record! John Wesley Harding has so much talent, the imagery on these songs is very vivid. For example, in the song "Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Steve Goodman, David Blue & Me" you can totally picture them all sitting around swapping songs, with a young JWH taking it all in. "July 13 1985" is dated but still hilarious today, and the 'love' songs like "Save a Little Room for Me" and "Affairs of the Heart" are timeless.

I strongly recommend this album to anyone who can appreciate a smart, well-crafted song with a bite to it. Enjoy!

Urban Folk music review All That Is Right in Music
JWH's debut album is a live, acoustic show recorded in 1990 (?). Not entirely sure.

It's wonderful, for anyone who likes melodic folk with great lyrics. "If you were my country, baby, you know that I'd enlist." Just a typical line from the many incredible tunes on this record.

Musically, it's a man with a guitar. That's it. No frills, no enhancements. JWH is a good guitarist and a sunny, clear, emotive vocalist. The song structures echo American folk more than British folk, so people expecting a Richard Thompson clone are in for a big and pleasant surprise.

What can I say about this record? He's brilliant, with incisive, literate lyrics and clear, compelling melodies and playing. Awesome. Buy it. Oh and, by the way, you can't beat his cover of Prince's "Kiss." Playful and stellar.

Buy it and enjoy it.

Urban Folk music review Live Modern Folk Music at its Best
Fans of Wes can't live without this live record. It is a must-have for all. Early versions of "The Devil in Me" and "Who You Really Are" as well as brilliant spur-of-the-moments songs like "July the 13th, 1985" and the 'acapulco number' "The Night He Took Her to the Fairground" are only to be found on this album. I enjoy it from beginning to end every time I listen to it.

Urban Folk music review Excellent live CD from one of the country's top music clubs.
The Iron Horse Music Cafe in Northampton, MA is one of the things I miss most about the other coast and this CD goes a long way to showing why - great music by great performers in a great setting. For fans of New Folk, this CD's got wonderful performances by some favorites: Richard Thompson's "Galway to Graceland", Maura O'Connell's version of Thompson's "Waltzing", and Ellis Paul's ethereal "Weightless" are all definitive versions. And if you haven't heard some of these folks live - like Martin Sexton for example! - here's a cheap way to find out what all the deserved fuss is about. Can't wait for a "Vol. 2."

Urban Folk music review Great live CD
Great live CD. Bought it cause I'm a big fan of Martin Sexton, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Susan Werner. Love the live version Marty does of Can't Stop Thinking About You. Also liked Ellis Paul's song.

Must I Paint You a Picture is a generous, two-disc, 40-track survey of Bragg's career to date. The tracklisting was apparently assembled with the help of Bragg's fans, who were asked to vote for their favourites on Bragg's website, but this democratic initiative has only been taken so far: while "Little Time Bomb", for example, was a more popular choice than, say, "The Boy Done Good", the latter is included and the former isn't. It would, of course, be uncharitable to suggest that this is reflective of the authoritarian instincts that lurk inside most socialists.

At any rate, though Bragg has always been chiefly characterised as a political songwriter, his best work has always been that which deals with the politics of the personal: there are few more acute summations of the eternal failure of the male and female to make sense to each other than his "How can you lie there and think of England when you don't even know who's in the team?" Bragg's superb love songs and love-gone-wrong songs are well represented here, from the angry, naive scratchings of "The Milkman of Human Kindness" to such older, if no wiser, musings as "Moving the Goalposts" and "Sulk". Curiously, his older, politically motivated songs now feel like they've reacquired an urgency they lacked during a 1990s largely devoid of stark ideological boundaries, when they sounded rather like quaint period pieces. The so-called war on terror and the increasing discomfort about global trade both have ready made soundtracks in "Between the Wars" and "There is Power in a Union". --Andrew Mueller

Average review score: Urban Folk music reivew

Urban Folk music reivew Politically naive and incoherent rantings from a poor singer
Billy Bragg's worldview is immoral as well as naive, his politics endorse slavery and forced labor, and his singing isn't very good and his guitar-playing is lousy. What's to like?

Urban Folk music reivew A POOR MAN's WOODY GUTHRIE.
Billy Bragg thinks he's a modern day Woody Guthrie, championing the poor working class. Unfortunately he is not.Not only is he a hypocrite by writing for the right wing press when it suits him, but i find his 'right on' attitude rather nauseating. This is a man that supports a certain Mr Blair and is proud to do so. Therefore i fine his music rather patronising to people that (unlike him) are really struggling. Mr Bragg wouldn't know real suffering if it crawled up and bit him. At least Steve Earle walks it like he talks it!

Urban Folk music review A welcome mat for everyone
Now there's a way for people unfmailiar with Billy get an overview of his music from above. I've loved his lyrical abilities and evocative music that fuses both a folkie sensibility and a gritty modern edge for a long time. Very few other present day bands can do this well. Outgrabe is one of the most successful, and they've clearly been influenced by Billy, the grand old man of this genre. I wish Billy all the luck in the world, and I'm sure this CD will draw new fans into his musical space.
