Growing up in the 60's, it seems as if there was always a Tommy James And The Shondells song on Top-40 radio. Call it "bubblegum", or "blue-eyed soul", it doesn't matter, the music was good then and it's still good now. You can't tell me that you won't find yourself tapping your feet or humming "Crystal Blue Persuasion" or "Draggin' The Line" when you hear it!

Hanky Panky has got to be one of my all time favorite songs and there's plenty more great material on this CD. Tommy James writes and performs songs that always make you feel good and make you remember those good times of long ago. He has that same ability as the Beatles. You never get tired of listening to a Tommy James song.

Not worth it.

This is called the "greatest" hits and granted there are some great hits on this CD but it is chocked full of 60's bubble gum that are definitely not hits. I found myself hitting the fast forward button more times than a "greatest" hits CD should require.

Tommy James and the Shondells were one of the better groups of the 60s, yet do not seem to get the recognition they deserve. This group created a string of hits beginning with "Hanky Panky" through "Draggin' the Line," from 1966 to 1971, though Tommy James originally released "Hanky Panky" in 1963 and re-recorded it in 1966.

Several of the songs by this group that are among the most enduring are the psychedelic songs: "Crimson and Clover" and "Crystal Blue Persuasion"; black light music for sure. Both songs were big hits for the group, and remain among my favorite songs to this day. Some of the songs here do verge on bubblegum. But these songs also are creative and introduce effects that at the time were novel.

For those who are less familiar with Tommy James and the Shondells, the songs you might recognize if you heard them, in addition to those mentioned above, are "I Think We're Alone Now," "Mony Mony," "Do Something to Me," and "Sweet Cherry Wine," which is also somewhat psychedelic. While the other songs on this CD were released either as an A or B side single, these songs received a lot of air play in the 60s. A few of these songs are somewhat forgettable, but better to have more than less.

Perhaps the biggest miss on this CD is "Crimson and Clover." The version for this CD is the single version, and not the much longer and better album version. The album version had an extended bridge with some of Tommy James and the Shondell's best guitar work. If you have an opportunity to hear the album version of "Crimson and Clover", or better yet, buying any album that contains the full-length version, it is worth it.

This CD is okay, but there is another CD that is better for Tommy James fans. "Anthology" was released earlier than this CD and contains 27 tracks to this CD's 16 tracks. While "Anthology" has a few weaker songs, it also has "Sugar on Sunday." You decide. You should also consider trying to find the album "Crimson and Clover" to have the extended version of that excellent song. Enjoy!

This is a really fabulous collections of songs. There is a great balance of old and new. This isn't a collection from one single genre and the diversity keeps the mix interesting. It's great to hear songs that wouldn't normally be noticed while a movie is playing and it's also great to hear those easily recognizable tunes from popular movies.

Should be noted : this is a two part video release.

Total running time is 168 Minutes:

I just got part one only, contains performances by:

Richie Havens , Joan Baez , The Who & Joe Cocker- simply fades to
black at the end of tape ( 68 mins)-

Only indication on the packageing that it's part one is the sel #11762 A

I'm assuming part 2 contains: Sly & the family Stone, Janis Joplin ,
Crosby Stills & Nash , John Sebastian , Arlo Guthrie , Country Joe
McDonald , Paul Butterfield & Canned heat ????

Be careful & Please update this product detail sheet

it's all about the music

John Sebastian, Ritchie Havens, Paul Butterfield, Melanie, Tim Harnden, Janis, and Sly...just the tip of why anyone who loves music-live music-must own this. These performances captured me one after another. There's defenitally a certain level of intimacy that a viewer can't get from "Woodstock, the Movie". This turned me on to performers I thought were just "o.k." and it is the best Crosby, Stills, and Nash performance I've ever seen or heard. If the opening credits weren't so cheesy, this would be a solid 5 stars.

Woodstock film outtakes

Any video of outtakes from the hundreds of miles of film taken at the 1969 Woodstock festival is definitely worth owning. Despite the flaws, WOODSTOCK: THE LOST PERFORMANCES has enough footage unreleased to satisfy those like myself who crave any and every pice of Woodstock audio/video that is available.
First the bad stuff: The video starts with a completely awful and useless introduction that should have never been made. The footage needs no narration so why have that moron say anything?

Some of the performances are poorly edited: The Band's "The Weight" is severely cut, so is Paul Butterfield's "Drifting Blues." The final performance, a delightful version of "Strawberry Fields" by Richie Havens is interrupted by the final credits rolling over the screen, and then a fade out while he's still singing (absolutely criminal). I wish they could have added some more outtakes such as Mountain, Johnny Winter, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane...etc. There's so much more footage they could have put on, who knows where to start? Luckily, we can see more of Sly & The Family Stone, John Sebastian, Country Joe, Arlo Guthrie, Canned Heat, Joe Cocker...
All the performances are great, I hope more are released soon.

Release this one on DVD!

I admit it. I was NOT at Woodstock. I had to work that weekend. (Also, I was a Midwestern, urban kid who knew little if any of the bands who'd played there!)

Still, it's become a fairy tale for me--despite its weaknesses which could be the subject of another commentary. It SHOULDN'T have worked, but did.

So this is a must for those who've endeared Woodstock.

The performances aren't as flashy as The Who or Ten Years After. I quite liked Paul Butterfield, but, then, I like well-done blues. Even Blood Sweat and Tears was a worthwhile performance. And Tim Hardin really moved me.

The Janis Joplin portion of the tape might be disappointing to real Joplin fans. I suppose some of the color tape didn't show up that good, so they alternated between color and black and white. I little disCONCERTing, but I'll survive it.

The little high-speed commentary was cute at best, but that's okay. It added a little texture to what may have seemed more boring if it were JUST music.

The tape's weakness is that I've listened to it just a couple of times and the audio is out of whack. So I hope this comes out in DVD to add to the other interesting Woodstock tidbits I've collected.

Hmm...maybe a longer one, with Johnny Winter and others might be even better!

Couple hits, mostly misses NOT PUNK

I don't know what part of this album is supposed to be considered "punk". The bands aren't punk rock bands, the songs aren't punk rock versions.

Ok so there are some popular bands like Cartel, Gym Class Heroes, and Plain White T's but these are not punk bands. I wouldn't even call most of the bands on here post-punk. So let's look beyond the fact that I was sorely disappointed that it wasn't my favorite 90's songs remade by punk bands and talk about what is there.

Cartel's reimagined "Wonderwall" is pretty good, but maybe I just really like that song
Same with Scary Kids... version of "Losing my Religion" I think I just really like this song.

Rest of the songs basically suck, even when they are just straight covers not a reimagining. I mean how do you put a hip-hop group on a "Punk goes" anything? If you want songs off of this album listen and buy the ones you want, don't waste your money on the whole thing.

I got it at Best Buy and FORCED them to take it back even though I'd opened it. I just couldn't let the world exist knowing I'd paid money for this farce.

note to Fearless Records: If you say it's a "Punk goes..." album ya might want to get PUNK bands to cover the songs.

It's alright.

It's nothing to make you WANT to buy it, but maybe download a few songs. In my opinion, Gym Class Heroes really f'd up "Under The Bridge". I'd give that cover a 0/5. The rest of the songs are alright, I like most of the bands anyway, but thought the songs could have been done better. Scary Kids Scaring Kids covering "Losing My Religion" by REM is the better song on the album.

I was very disappointed by this CD. First of all, most of the songs that are covered had no business being punk-i-fied in the first place. Second, most of the songs are nearly identical to the originals. Third, some of the songs are so slow, the word "punk" sticks in my throat when I try to say it. The bands had an opportunity to amp up some balladish songs and failed. Here's my opinion on the songs:

1. March of the Pigs: 2/5 Sounds good, similar to NIN, Mae didn't add too much to me.
2. Song 2: 3/5 Why, why, why would they do a punk cover of an already fun, punkish-pop song? Sounds exactly the first, but since the first version is really good, hence the 3 stars.
3. Under The Bridge: 4/5 The more you listen to this cover it is actually good. The Gym Class Heroes add enough to make it different but don't ruin the original amazing song. But punk? Not sure about that.
4. Black Hole Sun: 1/5 Should have stayed in the hole. Is slower than the original with none of the rock sound. Disappointing.
5. Hey Jealousy: 2/5 OK, but sounds a lot like the first one. Hard to do much with an already good song.
6. All I Want: 1/5 Slower (if possible) than the Toad version. Huh?
7. Losing My Religion: 5/5 The album's saving grace. It ROCKS! It's catchy and hardcore, and definitely does not sound like REM. This is the type of song I expected for the rest of the album.
8. Wonderwall: 1/5 Adds a slight kick to the original but not enough.
9. You Oughta Know: 4/5 Again, great song to start with and the Killing Moon does a nice job putting a punk spin on it.
10. Stars: 1/5 A bit better than the 1st, but still kinda boring.
11. Enjoy the Silence: 4/5 the only other song I really liked in its "punk" version. Awesome song to start with, catchy, techno-ish version.
12. Beautiful People: 3/5 3 stars because it's a cool song on its own, but the cover added nothing--not that it should or could have.
13. Big Time Sensuality: Didn't know the 1st one, so it's hard to rate. Not really a fan of this version either.
14. In Bloom: 3/5 Another song that seems strange to include--what more can you do to a song that already rocks? But the cover band did not ruin it, to their credit.
15. Jumper: 2/5 I was hoping for a fast, interesting version. Nope. Step off the ledge.

My advice: do NOT waste your money on this CD. Just download the Scary Kids, Scaring Kids "Losing My Religion" if you're an REM fan. Or, buy the albums with the original songs.

Could have been Better

Fearless Records has been putting these compatibles out for years, having today's up-and-coming artists cover songs that have been populer. But in this release the songs are better left with the original artists. While it features Gin Blossoms' "Hey Jealousy" done by Hit the Lights, Copeland's version of "Black Hole Sun" and "Gym Class Heroes" doing a version of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' ballad "Under the Bridge" they all are typical and lacking excitement.

One of the only highlights of the album is Killing Moon's version of Alanis Morisette's "You Oughtta Know" with their male frontman singing about Full Houses' Uncle Joey going down on him a a theater (although I don't like it as much as 1000 Maniacs' version). So They Say's version of Nirvana's "In Bloom" probably has Kurt Cobain turning in his coffin. So, over all, this album, in my opinion, could have been better.

This DVD called "The Videos" has 2 MISERABLE MUSIC VIDEOS! "I'm not a girl, not yet a woman" it isn't the video, it's a performance in Sydney, Australia; and in the DVD box, says "Britney Spears Live From Las Vegas"...it's a 20 second tv commercial, anyone cold think it's the concert or the making of of it, because anywhere says that it is a commercial.
The DVD makers should have waited Britney to have more music videos from the 3rd CD, because it has only "I'm A Slave 4 U" as music video. If you see Britney's "In The Zone" DVD, at least it has a full TV special and the Making The Video for Toxic.
If you buy this DVD, you will take 30minutes to see it from the beginning, until the end of the end credits, because there's nothing else to see.

The title itself is misleading but overall, Britney: The Videos is a short, not-that-great DVD release to satisfy Britney's fans, such and me. Though I did enjoy the videos I thought the HBO section would be the entire concert, so I didn't purchase Britney Live in Las Vegas on DVD. Don't buy this DVD unless you are a Brit fan! 3 out of 5 stars because it's misleading, and mediocre satisfaction.

I think the first time I heard the live lounge was when I discovered The Fray's extremely quirky cover of "Hips Don't Lie." Imagine that, Issac Slade's dry voice singing a Shakira song. Only in the Live Lounge. It's must-listen radio where anything goes, as long as it's good. Some are better than others, and the covers are usually better than the chart-topping hits. But back to "Hips Don't Lie," I mean really, you have to listen to this, because it's so funny, out-there, and quirky. A must for any Fray fan, and certainly for anybody that's heard the original.

Here's another more serious cover, that's probably better than the original. 30 Seconds To Mars' cover of Kanye West's "Stronger," is as haunting as it is incredible. It's the same song, but they sound almost nothing alike. From Jared Leto's strong vocal performance to the dark music, it succeeds in every manner as it builds for 6 minutes.

On a lighter note, The Pigeon Detectives give a decidedly fun Brit rock cover of Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend," which keeps the gender-bending lyrics intact until the very end. It's great in that raw garage rock sort of way, and certainly one you can bounce your head to. Natasha Bedingfield gives her best vocal and emotional performance in "Chasing Cars," which shows that she has some true talent beneath all the studio-produced fluff. It doesn't come off sappy as you might think, and the song seems to strike all the right chords. And how could we forget the uniquely voiced Billy Clyro, who gives a pleasant take on the widely-covered Rihanna Summer 2007 hit.

But sadly, not all is roses and tulips. Although this acoustic version inspired the superior studio version, Amy Whinehouse, not surprisingly, gives a rather lazy performance, which doesn't do her already teetering vocals any favors. Paolo Nutini's cover of "Rehab" isn't a much of a cover as it seems to be more of a vocal and musical copycat. And even though there's 40 songs on the collection, many of these are devoted to rather plain acoustic versions of songs by the original artists, which takes space away from several other amazing covers left off this disc. Sure, The Holloways and the Foo Fighters do well doing their own songs, but others come out dry and boring.

So overall, I still wish they'd ax the acoustic versions, and just stick to the covers, but there is plenty of gold to be found in this treasure trove. Still largely unheard of in America, The Live Lounge is a great place for artists to make great music, give original takes on tired classics, and add their hand of brilliance to otherwise dull specks on the charts. I just can't wait till volume 3, and the amazing tracks of Pendulum's "Violet Hill," and so many others.

Real Score: 4.5

Love, love, love!

This was excellent! I actually liked this much better than Vol 1 when I first listened to them both (but Vol 1 grew on me so now I love them both!). I was blown away by Biffy Clyro's acoustic cover of Rihanna's "Umbrella". Other amazing tracks were Nelly Furtado's acoustic "Maneater", Jose Gonzales's cover of "Heartbeats", Paolo Nutini's cover of Rehab, Mika's all piano version and incredible vocal range of "Grace Kelly" and James Morrison's soulful "You Give Me Something".

Because these tracks are recorded live, you really get to marvel at the talent of these bands (and of course realize the flaws of the lesser talented ones). I also had not heard of most of these bands before so I was especially excited to be introduced to them. I will say I only paid $26 each for Vol 1 & 2 at Virgin Records, I'm not sure if I would have been as pleased if I had paid almost twice the price for them mostly because as much as there were awesome tracks, there were also some that I didn't care for.

Trying to cash in on a good idea

I loved the first live lounge. Excellent artists, great versions, etc. This follow-up seemed to be a compilation of the next best tracks. There were only a few tracks I liked, and were certainly second best to the original version. If they do a third version, they need to compile more material before choosing the tracks to put on it.
