The roots of rockabilly - up-tempo fifties country musicReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-04-03
The writer of the extensive liner notes is in no doubt that the first rockabilly single ever recorded was Elvis Presley's 1954 single that featured Mystery train on one side, with Blue moon of Kentucky on the other side. Despite the significance he attributes to that single, both sides are omitted from this compilation, although Elvis re-recorded Mystery train in 1955 and that version is included here.
At the time, country singers tended to call this music by another name - cat music. This may explain the sprinkling of cat-related song titles here, including Wild cat boogie (Forest Rye), Cat music (Tommy Scott), Hepcat baby (Eddy Arnold, showing a different side to his music from the country ballads he is famous for), Here kitty kitty (Jimmy Murphy), Cattin' around (Charlie Adams) and Purr kitty purr, which we`ll come back to later. However, dog lovers aren't ignored because you'll also find Hound dog (Billy Starr) and Don't fix up the doghouse (George McCormick).
Many of the artists featured here have long since faded into obscurity, but there are several who achieved lasting fame to varying degrees. Elvis Presley is represented by a total of seven tracks including the aforementioned 1955 version of Mystery train. Also here are Marty Robbins (4 tracks), Carl Perkins (3 tracks), Little Jimmy Dickens (2 tracks), Carl Smith (2 tracks) and one track each by Johnny Cash and Faron Young. However, they aren't always represented by their most obvious tracks from the period covered. In any case, the real interest in this collection is in all the tracks by obscure artists that you might not hear anywhere else.
Of the artists not already mentioned, Rudy Grayzell is represented by four tracks. Two of them (It ain't my baby and I ain't gonna rock it, Ocean paradise) were released as two sides of a single. Both sides featured Jim Reeves (guitar) and Floyd Cramer (piano) among the musicians. Rudy then switched labels and recorded as Rudy Gray. Two of those tracks (Hearts made of stone, Please big Mama) are included here. Sonny Fisher is also represented by four tracks (Rocking Daddy, Hold me baby, Hey Mama, Rockin'n'rollin') Though not obvious from the credits, Sid and Billy Erwin are represented by five tracks, the first (Who put the turtle in Myrtle's girdle) billed as the Western Melody Makers, the next three (Drink' wine spoli oli, I like it, Put something in the pot baby) as members of the Five Strings and the last of their tracks here (Purr kitty purr) as Sid King and the Five Strings. All these artists were hugely talented, but I'd not come across any of them prior to buying this box.
Although this collection is male-dominated as you'd expect, a few female singers are featured. The most famous among them is Rose Maddox, who opens the collection with a solo recording (Kiss me like crazy) and is later featured with her brothers (I gotta go get my baby). Charlene Arthur also features on two tracks (Looking at the moon wishing on a star, I heard about you), the first-mentioned being a cover of a Rudy Grayzell song. With the right management and material, she might have become a big star but she didn't get to record in the style that she wanted and faded into obscurity. There is one track each featuring the Miller sisters (There`s no right way to do me wrong) and Alvadean Coker (We`re gonna bop), who closes the collection. Goldie Hill duets with Justin Tubb on one track (Sure fire kisses). The Burleson sisters provided clearly-heard backing vocals for Reece Shipley and his rainbow valley boys (Hillbilly jive with a boogie beat).
Picking out highlights from a collection such as this is never easy. Despite the obscurity of most of the material, it has clearly been carefully selected and it's all worth hearing. Although it is relentlessly up-tempo by definition, there is enough variety within the basic sound to keep it interesting. And, of course, you can always choose to break it up by playing other music in between playing the various CD's within the box, if you wish. This is a great compilation that provides a permanent reminder of a particular period in musical history that is often ignored. Actual rockabilly music is far easier to find, but if you're interested in the roots of rockabilly, this is just what you're looking for.

If you're a fan of the boppin' hillbilly genre this is a great find but fans looking for early rockabilly will be disappointed.
The sound quality is first rate and there is a nice liner notes booklet.
As with all sets by Proper, this set offers a tremendous value for the money.

I lay no claim to "a first-rate intelligence," but I do subscribe to this F. Scott Fitzgerald dictum about a functioning mind. And so I can call myself a feminist and still think Playboy After Dark is a delicious pop culture artifact.
This three-disc set (Volume Two) begins in the lounge-era cool of the very early sixties and winds up in "groovy" territory at the end of the decade. Highlights (for me): Disc 1 = Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie performing with Joe Williams and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, Pete Seeger leading a living room sing-along, close-up magic tricks, Cal Tjader; Disc 2 = Johnny Mathis, The Modern Jazz Quartet, George Carlin, Don Adams, Brenton Wood ("Just give me some kind of sign, girl..."), and the hair-do on the bass player in the group Hef introduces as "The" Deep Purple; Disc 3 = fewer delights and some actual irritations, though Sid Caesar gives one of his "multilingual" performances, and Jerry Garcia wears a gigantic poncho that Deadheads may appreciate in any glimpses that aren't obscured by some ill-considered "psychedelic" camera effects.
Included on Disc 1 is a worshipful short documentary about Hefner, circa 1963, showing us that one of the secrets of his success is an ability to look into the camera with a straight face and declare himself "a genius."

It's an interesting hour. Beyond the performances, the interviews provide interesting insights into the characters and their history.
But this is more than an intellectual exercise. This DVD has moments where real emotion comes through. Ackroyd and his alter ego both loved their performing partners, and they both still feel and carry that loss with them.
IT may not be the best thing for someone who's just starting to get into the Blues Brothers - for that I'd suggest Briefcase Full of Blues and the first movie. If you're already a big fan, this is something you should get for your collection.

Good, but......Reviewer ID:

Another complaint is the goofy discussions with Dan Akroyd between songs. Fairly cheesy. It would have been better to add the discussions with Dan as a Special Feature rather than between songs. Furthermore, the songs tended to abrubtly start during the second or third bar of the song. Why not at the beggining of the song?
Nonetheless, if you're a die hard BB fan you'll enjoy it.

The Doyen of the Azeri MughamReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-06-22
As for the 2005 recording, the sound is very fine with slight echo for spatial volume, but the vocal perfomance lacks that peculiar spark as found on his 1997 live concert album, which also features a classical mugham, and of his collection of folk songs and ghazals on his popular Love's Deep Ocean album. (The musicians, however, are splendid and play powerfully and with flair.) There IS something special performing before a large public audience, and perhaps the seriousness of this Music of Central Asia series may also have had an effect. But this is only a minor criticism; the album is highly worthy for its many features.
Authentic Taste of Azeri Mugham TraditionReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2008-07-22
Alim Qasimov, accompanied by his daughter Fargana, is the single greatest performer and interpreter of the Azeri Mugham tradition, and this release shows why. Accompanied by traditional Middle Eastern instruments such as the daff, nagara, kamace, tar and duduk, Alim and Fargana perform both traditional Mughams, ghazels by Seyyid Azim Sirvani and (on the last half of the disc) more contemporary, cross-cultural pieces. This is mystical music symbolizing pure devotion to Allah, the essence of the Sufi tradition, and I strongly recommend anyone interested in Azeri and Turkish music check this out. As part of a deluxe boxed set, this CD comes with a DVD which includes interviews with Alim and Fargana, a list of traditional Azeri instruments, a map of Central Asia, and information on the Agha Khan Trust for the Arts. The interviews are in Azeri, with English subtitles, and provide a great deal of insight into Azeri musical tradition.
This is a phenomenally beautiful release, and I am sad to say that I missed Alim and Fargana performing live in concert around the time of it's release. And definitely check out some of the other CDs in this series, which promises to cover all of Central Asia (thus far there are, I believe, six CDs out). For more of Alim and Fargana, check out some of their earlier releases, such as 'The Art of Mugham' and 'Love's Deep Ocean,' both of which are excellent albums.
