This one is way more upbeat than "Cloud Nine". And as a result it's somewhat discoish but not too nostolgic. That said, this is a fine package, that in my opinion has only one negligable track. Highly recommended.

Note: The -1 star is strictly a measure of personal preferance, I prefer a more chilled vibe as is found on Cielo: Cloud Nine.

Understandably, No. 3 was always going to have a huge task ahead of it, what with Mauricio Avilles showing the competition how it's REALLY done on Naked's 2nd installment. Described as 'a snapshot of the wide spectrum of dance being produced around the world today', that is exactly what it is and how it should be received. Although i'm sure alot of fans were expecting the Naked Crew to up the ante and completely re-invent the mix Cd after Vol.2, (I, for one, would never have bought another deep house mix Cd ever again if Naked had pulled it off, there'd be no need to!) comparisons are a little unfair on Vol.3. Where 2 was dripping in straight up sexiness, 3 is the chilled comedown for the most part. Although really GOOD, it makes u wanna exhale and go, "I wish u hadn't done that J.Mark Andrus", in places. These moments are what keeps it from being a GREAT mix. Ok, good is good, but great is better! and that's what we've come to expect from the Naked crew. Nevertheless, still a very strong offering, definately a must have in ur collection...

Simply the best...

This is a great follow up to the perfection of vol II. Volume three is not as great thought but still worth buying. Due to the stand out of "rain" by Gaelle I am officially a Naked-Music fan. I hope they come out with volume 4.

Another solid Naked Music Release

The roots of rockabilly - up-tempo fifties country music
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

Review Date: 2009-04-03
Covering the period from 1950 to 1955 (though the tracks are not in chronological order), this boxed set captures the period when some country singers experimented by adding a strong rhythmic beat to their music, perhaps with a view to attracting a wider public. The end result was a form of music that evolved into rockabilly. As other reviewers point out, there isn't much actual rockabilly music here, though the same label later released another box titled Classic rockabilly. I haven't heard the contents of that box, but the track listing suggests that if you're looking for actual rockabilly music, that's the one to go for. So this particular box focuses on boppin' hillbilly music, much of which has long since faded into obscurity. I wasn't familiar with this music prior to acquiring this box, but I'm very pleased with it.

The writer of the extensive liner notes is in no doubt that the first rockabilly single ever recorded was Elvis Presley's 1954 single that featured Mystery train on one side, with Blue moon of Kentucky on the other side. Despite the significance he attributes to that single, both sides are omitted from this compilation, although Elvis re-recorded Mystery train in 1955 and that version is included here.

At the time, country singers tended to call this music by another name - cat music. This may explain the sprinkling of cat-related song titles here, including Wild cat boogie (Forest Rye), Cat music (Tommy Scott), Hepcat baby (Eddy Arnold, showing a different side to his music from the country ballads he is famous for), Here kitty kitty (Jimmy Murphy), Cattin' around (Charlie Adams) and Purr kitty purr, which we`ll come back to later. However, dog lovers aren't ignored because you'll also find Hound dog (Billy Starr) and Don't fix up the doghouse (George McCormick).

Many of the artists featured here have long since faded into obscurity, but there are several who achieved lasting fame to varying degrees. Elvis Presley is represented by a total of seven tracks including the aforementioned 1955 version of Mystery train. Also here are Marty Robbins (4 tracks), Carl Perkins (3 tracks), Little Jimmy Dickens (2 tracks), Carl Smith (2 tracks) and one track each by Johnny Cash and Faron Young. However, they aren't always represented by their most obvious tracks from the period covered. In any case, the real interest in this collection is in all the tracks by obscure artists that you might not hear anywhere else.

Of the artists not already mentioned, Rudy Grayzell is represented by four tracks. Two of them (It ain't my baby and I ain't gonna rock it, Ocean paradise) were released as two sides of a single. Both sides featured Jim Reeves (guitar) and Floyd Cramer (piano) among the musicians. Rudy then switched labels and recorded as Rudy Gray. Two of those tracks (Hearts made of stone, Please big Mama) are included here. Sonny Fisher is also represented by four tracks (Rocking Daddy, Hold me baby, Hey Mama, Rockin'n'rollin') Though not obvious from the credits, Sid and Billy Erwin are represented by five tracks, the first (Who put the turtle in Myrtle's girdle) billed as the Western Melody Makers, the next three (Drink' wine spoli oli, I like it, Put something in the pot baby) as members of the Five Strings and the last of their tracks here (Purr kitty purr) as Sid King and the Five Strings. All these artists were hugely talented, but I'd not come across any of them prior to buying this box.

Although this collection is male-dominated as you'd expect, a few female singers are featured. The most famous among them is Rose Maddox, who opens the collection with a solo recording (Kiss me like crazy) and is later featured with her brothers (I gotta go get my baby). Charlene Arthur also features on two tracks (Looking at the moon wishing on a star, I heard about you), the first-mentioned being a cover of a Rudy Grayzell song. With the right management and material, she might have become a big star but she didn't get to record in the style that she wanted and faded into obscurity. There is one track each featuring the Miller sisters (There`s no right way to do me wrong) and Alvadean Coker (We`re gonna bop), who closes the collection. Goldie Hill duets with Justin Tubb on one track (Sure fire kisses). The Burleson sisters provided clearly-heard backing vocals for Reece Shipley and his rainbow valley boys (Hillbilly jive with a boogie beat).

Picking out highlights from a collection such as this is never easy. Despite the obscurity of most of the material, it has clearly been carefully selected and it's all worth hearing. Although it is relentlessly up-tempo by definition, there is enough variety within the basic sound to keep it interesting. And, of course, you can always choose to break it up by playing other music in between playing the various CD's within the box, if you wish. This is a great compilation that provides a permanent reminder of a particular period in musical history that is often ignored. Actual rockabilly music is far easier to find, but if you're interested in the roots of rockabilly, this is just what you're looking for.

This is a great box set. Like so many of the Proper sets offers lots of informative info into the music and the artisit. If you like Boogie Woogie Swingin' Hoppin' Country that provided alot of rock-a-billy sounds you'll love this set. If you're looking for hard core 60's rock-a-billy it's not here. A great set, well worth the money. Glad I bought it!

"From Boppin Hillbilly to Red Hot Rockabilly" offers up four CDs jam-packed with bopping hillbilly music but, unfortunately, very little in the way of rockabilly.
If you're a fan of the boppin' hillbilly genre this is a great find but fans looking for early rockabilly will be disappointed.
The sound quality is first rate and there is a nice liner notes booklet.
As with all sets by Proper, this set offers a tremendous value for the money.

Congress has designated 2003 as the Year of the Blues, and both PBS and Public Radio are producing related series'. This CD is the perfect complement, featuring blues tracks by some of the legends (e.g. B.B. King, Taj Mahal, Ruth Brown, Henry Gray) and some of the rising stars (e.g. Keb' Mo', Robert Cray, Eric Bibb, Susan Tedeschi) who keep the blues alive and thriving. Whether you're a student of the art, or just like to listen to great music, this CD is for you.

This is another CD that I found in my friend Regina's shop, Art and Soul. It is a collection of Blues, with 14 cuts by different musicians/vocalists. It has:
Arthur Adams and B.B. King ----- Get you next to me
Keb Mo' ------------------------ Hand it Over
Ruth Brown --------------------- Good Day for the Blues
Henry Gray --------------------- How could you do it
Taj Mahal ---------------------- Cakewalk into town
Robert Cray & Albert Collins --- She's into something
Sugar Pie Desanto -------------- Hello, San Francisco
Raful Neal --------------------- Call me Baby
Otis Rush ---------------------- I got the blues
Sunpie Barnes ------------------ Sunpie's Romp & Stomp
Eric Bibb ---------------------- Needed Time
Chris Thomas King -------------- Why Blues
Susan Tedeschi ----------------- Just won't burn
Soloman Burke ------------------ None of us are free

The playing time on individual cuts runs from 2:34 to 5:39. Total playing time is not given. I have it playing on my media player as I write this. It is published by Putumayo World Music (guaranteed to make you feel good! and it lives up to that promise). Putumayo is to be congratulated for putting together an outstanding collection.

Having seen the Grateful Dead & Deep Purple footage on bootlegs this should really be a treat. This is the "Mark 1" lineup of Deep Purple (pre-"Smoke on the Water")and I believe they do one instrumental and possibly "Hush". Ritchie Blackmore is still using his red Gibson ES-335 guitar, he hadn't switched to the Strat just yet. The Dead are in full regalia here doing an electric "St. Stephen" & acoustic "Mountans of the Moon", Garcia even raps with Hef. Can't wait to see this, the music, not just the girls! Further volumes please, Hef! I know there's a vintage Byrds performance of "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere/This Wheel's on Fire" from a 1967-68 show somewhere in your archives.

"The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function."

I lay no claim to "a first-rate intelligence," but I do subscribe to this F. Scott Fitzgerald dictum about a functioning mind. And so I can call myself a feminist and still think Playboy After Dark is a delicious pop culture artifact.

This three-disc set (Volume Two) begins in the lounge-era cool of the very early sixties and winds up in "groovy" territory at the end of the decade. Highlights (for me): Disc 1 = Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie performing with Joe Williams and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, Pete Seeger leading a living room sing-along, close-up magic tricks, Cal Tjader; Disc 2 = Johnny Mathis, The Modern Jazz Quartet, George Carlin, Don Adams, Brenton Wood ("Just give me some kind of sign, girl..."), and the hair-do on the bass player in the group Hef introduces as "The" Deep Purple; Disc 3 = fewer delights and some actual irritations, though Sid Caesar gives one of his "multilingual" performances, and Jerry Garcia wears a gigantic poncho that Deadheads may appreciate in any glimpses that aren't obscured by some ill-considered "psychedelic" camera effects.

Included on Disc 1 is a worshipful short documentary about Hefner, circa 1963, showing us that one of the secrets of his success is an ability to look into the camera with a straight face and declare himself "a genius."

Unbelievable Look at 60's Pop Culture...Cool

I got this CD as a birthday gift after I used a free trail series on Comcast on Demand....What a waste of time. This CD was not designed for the beginner at all. It will only be helpful if you are a exerpienced singer and you know what and what not to do to a T to your voice. You will learn a lot of bad habbits from this CD. I also used the Berklee Elements for Vocal Technique series. This book is a more natural way of singing. The book seems simple but it tells you basically what you will learn when you take singing lessons. My advice to anyone is to buy the Berklee book and take a couple of lessons or atleast talk to someone who is knowlegdable in vocal techniques. I am now a accounting major/ vocal performance minor in college and I must say that this book was of no help to me. Its been three years since I used it and i am still working on dropping some of the bad techiques i learned when using this. The techniques they teach my help but ONLY use it if you are taking vocal lessons and/ or experienced so will know what to do and not to do or you will distroy your voice.

i am shocked at the poor reviews this video has gotten. I am a professional singer and have been singing for over 20 years. I have only watched the Gary Catona part once and did not care for his approach. And the fake Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson improv in the beginning is horrible. But the exercises in Ron Anderson's part of this video have helped improve my breathing, range and technique. Very good to put on every other day as a video coach vocal warm-up. Worth the $6 I paid from Oldies movies.

There's lots of voice instruction CD's available at much better prices.
The quality of instruction here is no better than others at half the price, and the video presentation doesn't help at all.

Their starting point isn't for beginners.
And what it does have won't add anything for the more advanced student.

Useless and a waste of money

I bought this in hopes of improving my singing voice, especially increasing the range of my voice and avoid singing off tune. At the end of using this my voice is no better than it was at the start - in fact it's a bit worse. I'm having a harder time keeping my voice in tune than I did at the start. It actually made my singing worse!

DO NOT BUY SO STUPID

The framework for this collection of live Blues Brothers performances is a pseudo-documentary retrospective featuring both Dan Ackroyd and Elwood Blues. The production values on the live recordings is uneven, but they all manage to capture the unique energy of the Blues Brothers.

It's an interesting hour. Beyond the performances, the interviews provide interesting insights into the characters and their history.

But this is more than an intellectual exercise. This DVD has moments where real emotion comes through. Ackroyd and his alter ego both loved their performing partners, and they both still feel and carry that loss with them.

IT may not be the best thing for someone who's just starting to get into the Blues Brothers - for that I'd suggest Briefcase Full of Blues and the first movie. If you're already a big fan, this is something you should get for your collection.

I'm a huge BB fan but while the DVD was good, it could have been great. Specifically, the audio mixing was lean. The sound was missing the richness that the BB's are known for. Likewise, although I'm not one to crank the bass, the bass was too light.

Another complaint is the goofy discussions with Dan Akroyd between songs. Fairly cheesy. It would have been better to add the discussions with Dan as a Special Feature rather than between songs. Furthermore, the songs tended to abrubtly start during the second or third bar of the song. Why not at the beggining of the song?

Nonetheless, if you're a die hard BB fan you'll enjoy it.

Three reasons to consider obtaining this album of Alim Qasimov and his daughter Fargana are the music, the enclosed booklet of explanatory text and photographs, and the accompanying DVD movie, perhaps the best among the series, which provides some keen insights into the music and the art of its performance. The music is mainly devoted to a single mugham (maqam or mode) divided into a suite of seven sections with six ghazals, or poems. Four, some Western-composed, songs follow. Qasimov on this recording has the support of a large ensemble of balaban obe (akin to the mournful Armenian duduk), kamancha stand-up fiddle, tar lute, oud, and naghara drum.

As for the 2005 recording, the sound is very fine with slight echo for spatial volume, but the vocal perfomance lacks that peculiar spark as found on his 1997 live concert album, which also features a classical mugham, and of his collection of folk songs and ghazals on his popular Love's Deep Ocean album. (The musicians, however, are splendid and play powerfully and with flair.) There IS something special performing before a large public audience, and perhaps the seriousness of this Music of Central Asia series may also have had an effect. But this is only a minor criticism; the album is highly worthy for its many features.

Part of the Smithsonian's monumental release of Central Asian music, this particular volume focuses in on the Mugham tradition of Azerbaijan (also spelled Azerbaican). Azerbaijan is a small nation to the northwest of Iran, tucked into the Caucasian Mountains, but readers might notice strong similarities between the Mugham and similar traditions in Central Asia, all the way up to the Uighurs of Xinjiang. And theres a good reason for that - all the Turkic peoples share a common musical heritage!

Alim Qasimov, accompanied by his daughter Fargana, is the single greatest performer and interpreter of the Azeri Mugham tradition, and this release shows why. Accompanied by traditional Middle Eastern instruments such as the daff, nagara, kamace, tar and duduk, Alim and Fargana perform both traditional Mughams, ghazels by Seyyid Azim Sirvani and (on the last half of the disc) more contemporary, cross-cultural pieces. This is mystical music symbolizing pure devotion to Allah, the essence of the Sufi tradition, and I strongly recommend anyone interested in Azeri and Turkish music check this out. As part of a deluxe boxed set, this CD comes with a DVD which includes interviews with Alim and Fargana, a list of traditional Azeri instruments, a map of Central Asia, and information on the Agha Khan Trust for the Arts. The interviews are in Azeri, with English subtitles, and provide a great deal of insight into Azeri musical tradition.

This is a phenomenally beautiful release, and I am sad to say that I missed Alim and Fargana performing live in concert around the time of it's release. And definitely check out some of the other CDs in this series, which promises to cover all of Central Asia (thus far there are, I believe, six CDs out). For more of Alim and Fargana, check out some of their earlier releases, such as 'The Art of Mugham' and 'Love's Deep Ocean,' both of which are excellent albums.
