How often have you heard someone say how much they hate country, except for Johnny Cash or "O Brother Where Art Thou?"
Here's a compilation that person should enjoy.
Featuring old tracks from Cash, Elvis, Hank Williams, Ricky Skaggs, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and more, this cd breathes of the authenticity of yesterday.
As a compilation, not every track is outstanding, however I enjoyed most of them, skipping only a few. The standout track is "Farther Along" by Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton.

To be honest with you, there isn't a decade that really hasn't defined music as good as the 1980's. There was just so much
that the industry offered, and just so many formats of great music to choose from. The songs were just great and filled with
so many guilty pleasures and delights from so many influences and signature tracks. Nevertheless, every 80's compilation really
doesn't seem to have every signature song or artist that should be on it, but that is alright. Arguably, when Rhino compiled
this collection with Billboard on #1 tracks, they did make some great tracks and styles that truly were signatures to the
1980's. This collection might not define that theory, but it is just a theory of music.
Billboard #1's: The 80's is a 2 disc set of 30 great pop songs from the 80's. There were so many great guilty pleasure tracks of the 80's on here, it just is a compilation for guilt. So many great songs here were compiled from Phil Collins on his own with his 1985 #1 song, One More Night, and his career with Genesis with their only #1 song, Invisible Touch. There are other great 80's tracks, including Pat Benetar on her smash, Love Is A Battlefield, Los Lobos with the only Spanish song to hit #1, La Bamba, and other guilty pleasures. Although this is just like every 80's collection with guilty pleasures like Love Shack from The B-52's, Queen's Another One Bites The Dust, Tommy Tutone's phone number ballad 867-5309 / Jenny, Missing You by John Waite, and the only Grateful Dead Top 10 hit, Touch Of Grey. All in all, just so much here, but more to be longed for.
Although you really don't seem to find 80's revolutionary performers like Whitney Houston, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Huey Lewis & The News, and others to name, many people may consider Billboard #1's: The 80's, as a compiled list of good 80's tracks. Like every 80's collection, none are ever perfect. This is one that should be glanced at and bought for die hard 80's fanatics.

This is pretty much the same as "the rocky story" (cd), i was very upset with this soundtrack...is it an official rocky VI
soundtrack, maybee not, anyway it should of had more songs from the rocky balboa movie such as frank sinatra "high hopes"...when
rocky walks into the ring...or perhaps they didn't have the copyright, but they sure had the approval to play it in the film.....AND
OTHER SONGS FROM ROCKY BALBOA (rocky VI) WHICH WERE PLAYED IN THE MOVIE WERE NOT ON CD.

The album is less focused on the latest movie, so much as it is a "greatest hits" album of all of the Rocky movie soundtracks.
All of the great songs are here (Living in America, Eye of the Tiger, Burning Heart, Hearts on Fire, the Rocky Theme, etc.)
I love it and it just makes me love the old movies even more. The 3 6 Mafia track stuck out like a sore thumb and should have
been left off, as it is a weak track anyway.
This is the CD you're looking for... It has it all...

your lifting session. Man-o-Man... Dyno-mite...No pain no gain... Keep on-a truckin'...Takes a lickin' but keeps on-a tickin'...Works

I often purchase gifts for other people so I try to really think about what that recipient likes and build around that idea.
One thing that my husband loves, is '80s music. At the time, he and I were just dating. I made him an 80's gift basket for
his birthday, and this is one of the CDs I purchased to put inside of it. He absolutely enjoyed it. It has a nice mixture
of some pop songs, slow songs and the 'retro alternative' also known as new wave. He keeps it in his car now, in constant
rotation on his CD player. I enjoyed it as well, and loaded it onto my ipod. If you miss the '80s music and you want an assortment
of various 80s songs, this is a good cd to either start your collection, or add to it. With the way it is priced now, you
save money and you can relive some of those memories from high school and/or college. Besides, you really can not put a price
on nostalgia and the way it makes us feel. Enjoy.

Having both graduated high school and college in the 1980s, my husband and I became fans of 80s music for life--in fact, our
recent wedding was all 80s! We own at least 10 different 80s compilation CDs, and this is definitely one of the best. The
album is very diverse: it includes the expected 80s pop hits such as "Mickey" by Toni Basil and "Walking on Sunshine" by
Katrina and the Waves, but it also offers some great, lesser-know tunes, namely "Mary's Prayer" by Danny Wilson and "Don't
Shed a Tear" by Paul Carrack. Similarly, not only does the CD feature big 80s rock bands such as J. Geils and Steve Miller,
but also there are some one-hit wonder groups, including Johnny Hates Jazz and Cutting Crew. A wonderful blend of various
styles from that great decade of music.

back mems.

As an American, I'd never have the opportunity to watch Eurovision on TV. Fortunately, it's possible to watch the performances
on various websites, and buy the CDs and DVDs. Most of the songs are at least decent, if not very good. My favorite: "Is
It True" by the Icelandic singer Yohanna, plus the songs by Patricia Kaas (France), Malena Ernman (Sweden), Lidia Kopana (Poland),
Inga and Anush Arshakyan (Armenia), Chiara Siracusa (Malta), Igor Cukrov and Andrea Šusnjara (Croatia) and Soraya Arnelas
(Spain). I even enjoy the songs that aren't sung in English, because it gives me a small glimpse of those countries' musical
styles. That said, there's only one truly bad song on the entire album, and it's a real stinker: "Copycat", by the Belgian
singer Patrick Ouchène. It's so bad, I don't even know where to start breaking down each individual point. I listen to the
entire collection of songs every day on the train going to and from work, but I have to skip over Copycat each time.
But with that one exception, I love this album and I'm glad I bought it so I have the chance to broaden my musical horizons past the usual boring American stuff on the radio these days.

Can Americans ever understand the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC)? Probably not. But don't worry. We Europeans don't understand
it either! And yet, the contest has been organized annually since 1956. Some nations are more obsessed with it than others.
Indeed, Sweden has long been superobsessed with the ESC. Everyone in Sweden quite literally grew up with the ESC and the Swedish
qualifying contest, known as Melodifestivalen.
Sweden has managed to win the ESC four times, most famously in 1974 with ABBA's song "Waterloo". Incidentally, ABBA seems to be the only band that ever became internationally famous due to an ESC victory. Celine Dion won the contest in 1988, but she didn't become a star until a few years later, and by then, everyone had forgot about her ESC win. (Celine's winning song isn't even included on her greatest hit collections.)
For years, the ESC was a *very* quaint contest. Each song had to be performed live by a symphony orchestra, including the rock and synthesizer songs! Can you imagine a rock song performed by a symphony orchestra? Then you can imagine Ryder's "Runner in the night", representing Britain in 1985. Actually, you can't. Each year, the winner was selected by jury voting, and since the jury groups were dominated by elderly people, old fashioned French and German songs were sure winners most of the time. About ten years ago, the contest was modernized, but the new system didn't work very well either. The contest was now decided by a phone vote, with neighbouring nations constantly voting for each other. For years, another problem have been "freak songs" (songs that are deliberately frivolous) or artists who really can't sing, and who should have entered Amateur Night Arkansas instead. The moderators, who often act like they are high on something, are another low point of this quixotic show.
And know what? We love every minute of it!!!
In fact, the main reasons for watching the ESC are precisely the strange rules, the moderators who desperately try to crack jokes in very bad English, the impossible costumes of the singers, the terrible camera angles, and - of course - the exciting phone vote (or jury vote) which often ends in quite unexpected ways. Even better, the ESC goes on for three non-consecutive evenings, making it an excellent excuse to consume snacks and candy all week long!
Frankly, we are living the high life up here. First, a month or so with Melodifestivalen. Then a week with the ESC. And then, off to the local record store to buy this year's ESC album.
Which finally brings me to this product: The Eurovision Song Contest, Moscow 2009. (Yes, the whole show was in Russia this year.) Overall, this year's contest featured surprisingly good songs, including the entries from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Belarus, Switzerland, Germany, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Montenegro and Iceland. The album naturally also contain the zany winner from Norway, and all the low points (Cyprus, Serbia, Latvia, etc). Sweden was represented by an interesting but obviously doomed combination of disco and opera. And yes, it was sung by an opera singer! One of my personal favourites is the Belgian song, performed by a Elvis Presley look-alike, who claims that he's the original, and Elvis is the copycat. I tried to post the lyrics on an Elvis product page here at Amazon, but the moderators stopped me, LOL.
Apart from this CD, there is also a DVD from the 2009 contest. However, I haven't seen it. If it contains the actual contest, please note that some of the songs are better live on stage, while others are tolerable on the album, but quite worthless live (Finland,Sweden and Belgium!).
I'm not sure if somebody who grew up with MTV and American chart music can ever understand the Eurovision Song Contest. But if you want to hear the best and worst of European and Southwest Asian pop music, this is an excellent buy. Beware of the earlier vintages, however. They are often much, much worse! We are talking Euro-trash.
PS. I bought this CD for my parents (who are quite old). They play it on a loud volume all day long!

I've had a chance to hear this thing more than once. Eurovision 2009 was a great event with many great new songs. Unfortunately,
few of them are enjoyable when heard on this album. This compilation has become another victim of the loudness race, trying
to sound as loud as possible without making you turn the volume knob. As a result, some of the best and most loved songs sound
flat and fatiguging. Perhaps the greatest victim of this merciless mastering has been the competition-winning Rybak's Fairy
Tale. The song's greatest strength is its pure, fun yet expressive accoustic arrangement, the swelling of the violins, the
piano-driven beat - all of that has been squished into an ear-pounding mush that conveys very little of the feeling that won
Rybak his first place.
Songs with a more dance/techno beat haven't been as tragically destroyed. The version of Ernman's La Voix here is better than during either round of the competition. But if, like me, you found yourself enjoying the ballads such "What if We" (Malta) and Lloyd Webber's "It's My Time" (UK) during the competition, stay away from this album. Try to procure the DVD of the final and rip them from there instead.

It is ironic that in 1961, Motown's first number one pop single was the Marvelettes Please Mr. Postman, and now in 2009
the easiest way to obtain The Marvelettes Forever, The Complete Motown Albums Volume I is to have the postman deliver it!
The three disc set distributed by Hip-o Select in a limited 5,000 edition is not readily available in stores and sold primarily
online.
The Marvelettes, long revered as one of the premier examples of the girl group gendre, finally get the respect they deserve. The long out of print first four studio albums, Please Mr. Postman, The Marvelettes Sing, Playboy and The Marvelous Marvelettes are included here in their entirety in digital remastering which greatly adds to the listening pleasure of these classic recordings. A live album, On Stage: Recorded Live comprises of tracks recorded at the Apollo Theater in 1962, and the Regal Theater In Chicago in 1963. The stereo version of their Greatest Hits album, along with mono singles and rare sides, plus bonus tracks of recordings the Marvelettes recorded under the name of the Darnells, round off this superb collection.
The packaging is up to the usual high standard Motown enthusiasts have come to expect of the Hip-o Select line. The accompanying booklet is well researched, featuring plenty of rare photographs, reproductions of the album graphics front and back and notes on individual recording sessions.
Disc three hints at the sophisticated soul that the Marvelettes would evolve into during their second phase of their career when Smokey Robinson would mastermind a new direction for the ladies. Hopefully a follow up volume two of their complete final albums is in the works.
This highly anticipated set is well worth the wait and goes a long way in underscoring the Marvelettes contribution as pioneers in rock and soul. Sure to sell out quickly, this is a must have addition to the collection of any serious fan of Motown music.

i was raised on MOTOWN. BOUGHT 45'S AND ALBUMS. and i always loved the MARVELETTES. collection is like the history of MOTOWN.
MIRACLES, MARY
WELLS, MARVELETTES, BARRETT STRONG,MARVIN GAYE were all there at the beginning and gave MOTOWN the foundation on which to make it the success
it was. i love the MARVELETTES because their first recordings were raw,
stripped down, not yet the polished MOTOWN sound. these early recordings
are amazing and a true treasure for me to have. GLADYS HORTON had the
raw, deep, big, voice on all the early hits. and even on the first
MARVELETTES recording the album PLEASE MR. POSTMAN-- WANDA YOUNG
is featured and sounds great which gives listeners a choice of 2 singers.
amazing to look and see the writers on these early songs. MARVIN GAYE
playing drums on PLEASE MR. POSTMAN. and even BERRY GORDY right there
at the beginning. i always remember being a young man and seeing the
back of the green MARVELETTES GREATEST HITS album and just looking at these 3 beautiful women. the silver dresses and the wigs. i just thought
they were the best and mysterious. you look at that picture now and
see what class, sophiscation, these 3 girls have, i really like the
MARVELETTES SING HITS OF 1962. IT WORKS because the MARVELETTES give
their own spin to these hits. later when MOTOWN artists did cover songs
from other groups they always recorded them with the MOTOWN sound but
this release is their own style. the release PLAYBOY is when things
were really getting that MOTOWN sound MARVELETTES style. MARVELOUS
MARVELTTES is another great release with great ballads. MARVELETTES
LIVE the raw, early, MOTOWN sound where you hear the songs recorded
live in basic style. MARVELETTES GREATEST HITS was the beginning of what was to come with WANDA YOUNG on "DON'T MESS WITH BILL"
THE SONGS RECORDED WITH GLADYS HORTON ON LEAD COULD ONLY HAVE WORKED
WITH GLADYS THEY ARE HER songs which she and the MARVELETTES on background made history. WANDA YOUNG'S leads were more polished and
made me feel like the MARVELETTES had two legacy's of the group. and
the background vocals on all these releases are what MARVELETTES stand
out. for some reason MOTOWN did not give them a chance to be as big as they should of. but now MOTOWN REALIZES their are fans out there ready
to purchase anything by them because for so long they were neglected
but it is a amazing accomplishment to know this group had talent and
were in my opinion a real girl group all their songs were about innocent themes such as boyfriends, dating, young love. who knows what
MOTOWN could have been if the MARVELETTES, MARTHA AND THE VANDELLLAS,
AND GLADYS KNIGHT, KIM WESTON, BRENDA HOLLOWAY, MARY WELLS,VELEVELETTES WERE all given preference MOTOWN could have been a girl group EMPIRE.
nothing against the SUPREMES i like the years up to 1967 but i now realize they had a formula a good formula but in the same mold of the
polished sound. MY FAVORITE MOTOWN GIRL GROUPS ARE MARVELETTES---SUPREMES
LINE UP--JEAN TERRELL - MARY WILSON- CINDY BIRDSONG, MARY WELLS, MARTHA
AND THE VANDELLAS. the MARVELETTES should be in the rock and roll hall
of fame just for PLEASE MR. POSTMAN a great song with a unforgettable
beginning "wait oh yeah wait a minute" but more than any awards what
matters is a body of work which still sounds great and will always
last. and with the MARVELETTES we got 2 lead singers with great background harmony where all the singers got full representation
in the songs. this is a better fuller sound. better GET THIS NOW
BECAUSE WHEN IT IS OUT OF PRINT no telling what the price will be.
i want to thank all the MARVELETTES for the great music, feel good
sound, positive, beautiful harmonies which made my life a whole like
happy. when you hear a MARVELETTES song you just feel good and smile.
so if MOTOWN never gave you your full attention you deserved. it is
the fans like me who have loved your songs always and to me that is
what good music is about! also the packaging is really nice.

Best ever collection for The Marvelettes! Every album from 1961 through 1966 is on board for this 3CD set (and a second volume
is promised later this year to cover the rest of The Marvelettes work from the late '60s). And while it's billed as "The
Complete Motown Albums-Vol. 1", Universal/Motown really went the extra mile with this set by including the original album
artwork from every LP, the non-LP singles (and their B sides), the mono mixes of singles from the "Greatest Hits" album, and
rare gems like "Maybe I Dried My Tears (For The Last Time)", "Little Girls Grow Up" & "I Should've Known Better" which were
previosly released only in England. If you're a fan of The Marvelettes, this set is highly recommended (pick it up quick
since it's a "Limited Edtion" set).

This Doo Wop concert was performed at The Sands Casino in Atlantic City and is more a night club performance than a theater
performance. The groups that performed live did a great job and would have been even better in the Benedum Center For the
Performing Arts in Pittsburg. There are a number of "flashback" films included here that did not seem to add that much to
the presentation.
Overall, not one of Lubinsky's better efforts, due to the concert location and over-production in the editing room.
A better choice is Rock, Rhythm and Doo Wop. Also produced by Lubinsky.

We bought this as a father's day gift for my husband's father. He enjoys doo wop music and has several CDs. This was his
favorite gift of the day and he immediately put it in and watched it in its entirely. The quality of the DVD seemed good
and the music was continuous.

The video and audio quality of this DVD stinks. If you're a die hard Nirvana fan, buy it, otherwise, don't waste your money.
Apparently, the producers had only one mission, "get rich with as little effort as possible." It appears that they simply
found any footage of the band, regardless of the quality, stuck it on a DVD, without any editing, and then threw it on the
market for public consumption. There are few decent recordings but just as many horrible takes, several of which the band
intentionally sabotages. Big disappointment.

My impression before I actually saw this DVD is that I might not like it as much since I favored the MTV Unplugged Nirvana
performance (very different from the performances here), however, I was pleasantly surprised with the entire DVD because in
the end, I actually did enjoy it more than I thought I would. The entire DVD is full of Nirvana's hard rocking rendition of
songs - making it a bit more difficult to hear the spoken lyrics (which I like to do when I listen to music) but even so,
I found myself enjoying the pace, the harsher, relentless pounding of the way the music was played, and watching the antics
of what now - at this point in time - appears to be very young men caught in the tumult of their own fame. I saw a side to
the band's music I hadn't known previously. Definitely a good addition to any Nirvana fan's collection.
NIRVANA rocks, but this DVD doesn't

I bought this just to be disappointed - this is not a concert DVD. As a concert DVD "Unplugged" in New York by MTV is much
better. Best thing in this DVD is the Extras - where you actually get to watch Nirvana in action without much editing. But
that's like 6 songs or so. If you want very short documentary and some Cobain interviews - then this will suffice, but if
you want a pure concert without silly editing - wait until better concert DVDs will be released.
