Note that the songs are 'covers' by a group of singers. Also, the lyrics themselves may differ from what you are used to as they have been translated differently from the original English. A few songs have been translated literally, rather than lyrically, so it comes off sounding grammatically and musically off. Also, Maranatha needs to proof read the printed lyrics. Sloppy editing with many orthography errors (spelling, accents ...).

The CD starts with Exile doing their great hit "Kiss You All Over;" the percussion, guitars and the awesome singing makes this a solid retro number. The tempo changes and a few key changes here and there make it an even better number! Suzi Quatro & Chris Norman do their duet of "Stumblin' In;" they sound every bit as good as they did when I first heard this number. Moreover, Hurricane Smith pulls off a major coup with one of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard, "Oh, Babe What Would You Say?" Love those strings on "Oh, Babe What Would You Say?," too.
Maxine Nightingale does her zesty number called "Right Back Where We Started From;" this is good solid 70's dancing music. Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr.'s "You Don't Have To Be A Star (To Be In My Show)" is another sweet love ballad about true love that always brings back fond memories of junior high school dances.
Chris Rea sings his sultry ballad "Fool (If You Think It's Over);" this never ceases to push my buttons because of the great dance beat and the smooth jazz sound of the song.
But if you want more light pop, listen for Daniel Boone doing his best on "Beautiful Sunday;" I like the way the sound was mixed so that there's a vague echo of Daniel's voice as he sings this. The guitar works well for "Beautiful Sunday," too. John Paul Young's classic hit "Love Is The Air" ends the album as a pop number that has just a twist of disco to it.
The liner notes come in the form of a small booklet and there's also plenty of information about the tracks on this CD. The artwork is very nicely done.
Overall, if you're craving 1970's pop, this is one CD I would highly recommend. The sound is great and we get twenty excellent tracks from many different artists.

The OC = Over CompletelyReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2007-07-24
Which leads me to the schtick of this album...the songs are all covers of actual songs - I believe most (if not all) of the original songs were at one point aired on the OC, as were the covers of them. I've done my best to try and identify where, because in all fairness, it's a bit easier than past soundtracks (the 5th springs to mind) to place where you heard the songs this time.
Goldspot's cover of Modest Mouse's "Float On" is one of the most enjoyable and replayable tunes - and played during a montage of Katelin & Julie Cooper battling it out on the tennis courts. I'm guessing the original played during MM's appearance at the Bait Shop S2.
Rock Kills Kid's cover of "I Turn My Camera On" is a ridiculously close cover of the original...no clue when either version was aired. Lady Sovereign's "Pretty Vacant" Sex Pistols take is pretty much nothing like the original. I think they used these during party scenes...
I actually kind of dig the mellow version of the show's title song "California" although this is the third time the song has appeared on an OC soundtrack (the 5th features a redux version by Phantom Planet). This song replaced the credits in the S4 Chrismakkuh ep. Ditto to enjoying Pinback's "Wasted" although it like "I Turn My Camera On" comes across very monotone after a few listens. The original Wasted by Black Flag aired during Seth's stoner 'phase' in S3.
Probably my fave song on the album aside from Goldspot's cover is John Paul White's "Can't Get It Out Of My Head", a really sweet cover of an originally quite schmultzy tune. No idea when either version aired on the show, and I'm sorry I missed it in the case of the cover version.
Although I'm usually a big fan of Rogue Wave (their contribution to the 5th album is fab) their song "Debaser" rings very familiar - partially because it features the same monotone + instrument formula found in "Camera" and "Wasted". No real memory of when either version of the song aired sadly. I do heart the Pixies though.
Syd Matters cover of "Hello Sunshine" is another fave of mine. It's just so eclectic and different sounding - just wait till the final couple of choruses for the background chords...gorgeous. The original tune has a lot of meaning for Seth/Summer - as per it played when they first hooked up, and the cover I believe played during some of Seth & Summer's parting moments in the latter half of S4.
I also dug the cover of the Killers "Smile Like You Mean It", which also originally appeared on the second soundtrack with "Hello Sunshine". The original tune came on during the Killers Bait Shop concert. Although the alien sound effects in the chorus of this version aren't to my liking, I suppose the airing of the tune during the kids desert alien road trip was suitable, and overall it's an enjoyable cover.
"Come Into Our Room" has never been a song I've liked - it aired during the Oliver stuff in S1, and the cover is a sloppy steal rather than a true cover. Passed over nearly every time I listen to this disc. I'm also not a massive fan of "The End's Not Near" despite the fact it was the title of the final ep of the series. I just don't like the vocals on this, and otherwise it again sounds like a sloppy ripoff of the original, or at least a bad ripoff of the Smiths.
Finally the album closes out with the epic 9 minute version of Mazzy Star's "Into Dust" as played by Ashtar Command. The song of course originally aired several times in the Marissa/Ryan relationship, most notably in the first episode when he carries her in the house, and the last episode of the S1 'summer season' in Tijuana when Ryan carries Marissa down the alley. I believe this cover also aired during the Chrismakkah ep in S4. Although I think Ashtar Command gets a bit carried away with themselves and loses some of the vulnerability of the original, this is a nice mellow cap-off to the cd.
Overall this album is a mixture of a couple of solid songs (1, 6, 8, 9), a few soundalikes that would make good background tunes for a TV show like the OC (2, 5, 7), a couple of blah covers (3, 10, 11), and a couple of worthy covers of key OC-lore songs (4, 12). It's a good addition to people who own the rest of the series, but otherwise not really worthy of its predecessors.

Review Date: 2009-05-30
The CD starts auspiciously with The Angels singing their huge hit, "My Boyfriend's Back." They sing and harmonize flawlessly on this track; and they never falter, either! The percussion is used to great advantage and overall this is a strong number with which to open the album. The Chiffons do one of my personal favorites, "Sweet Talkin' Guy." "Sweet Talkin' Guy" has The Chiffons sounding better than ever; they sing this sweetly even though the melody belies the seriousness of the lyrics. Wow, how The Chiffons could sing! Again the percussion is perfect for the arrangement. Little Eva does "The Loco-Motion" to perfection--and beyond! "The Loco-Motion" is a fine tune that Little Eva does up right; and the music fits in perfectly with her vocals. I love those guitars and drums.
The Toys perform "A Lover's Concerto" without ever letting go of a single superfluous note; and that's grand. The Toys really hit a huge goal with this tune; they bat it straight out of the ballpark! The music is terrific; but wisely the music remains in the background--it never steals the show away from The Toys' vocals--great! The Cookies also do their "Chains" without ever skipping a beat; this has a great early rock and roll flavor to it and I love that handclapping percussion. Listen for The Murmaids to do "Popsicles And Icicles" with panache; this is a very pretty tune and it adds a lot to this album.
The Shirelles perform "I Met Him On A Sunday" really well. The Shirelles always did everything they sang incredibly well; and the arrangement for this is very strong. Robin Wood's "Wonderful Summer" is absolutely adorable; "Wonderful Summer" is quite pretty and sweet. Carole King hits the mark with her marvelous "It Might as Well Rain Until September;" this ballad features Carole effortlessly managing tempo and key changes like the pro she is and always will be! The Caravelles sing their hearts out on "You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry;" the handle this so professionally I wonder why they aren't remembered more than they are. What a tune!
"Easier Said Than Done" is quite energetic; and I also like "I Love How You Love Me" by the incredible Paris Sisters. The Paris Sisters were one of the best sister acts of the mid 1900s and just one listen proves it.
The Best Of The Girl Groups, Volume 2 has so much to offer that any fan of this genre of music simply must get this album. Newcomers to early rock and roll as well as the girl groups would do well to get this album, too.
