Billy Kaui, lead singer of the group Country Comfort had one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. I became aware of this album just recently and I have played it over and over again, never tiring of listening to this wonderful group. I recommend this album to everyone who loves music and would call attention to the fact that this group from Hawaii, out of the 70s generation, did not receive the attention it deserved. All because we lost Billy Kaui at such a young age. Had he lived, I believe all America would know and love Billy and Country Comfort

One of Hawaii's BEST!

In the 70's era of Hawaii's growing number of contemporary Hawaiian music, no other band sounds quite like this...a mix of jazz, folk and love songs blended well with the deep vocals of Billy Kaui and Country Comfort. Despite being a band cursed by controversy of drug use, they still have sound unmatched by any Hawaiian sound, and they easily rank up there with the great bands of the 70's;Kalapana, C&K, Olomana, etc.

The CD is a nice collection of the bands greatest hits, unfortunatly the original recording quality was reproduced instead of being digitaly mastered-all the original hiss can still be heard, an unfortunate drawback to being done on analog in the 70's.

Another downside to the collection - Theres many other collections out there, and many of them have the SAME songs repeated on them. I think 3 compilations have the song "Pretty Girl". I LOVE that song, but to have it repeated on multiple CDs...gets kinda old. HOwever if you can only buy one, this one is a GOOD choice. The only song I think you'll miss is "It does'nt matter anyhow".

i still have this one on vinyl. what a scratched up noise of a disc it is. still brings back a lot of memories of my days in hawaii. it was just before i left hawaii, that the lead singer of country comfort, billy kaui passed away. that year hawaii also lost Robert Beaumont of Olomana, and in 1999, the passing of Thomas Mackey Feary Jr closed another chapter of hawaiian music. the good die young i guess. i still get home sick when i kick back and listen to waimanalo blues, the winds are gonna blow, so i am heading down that country side, singing my waimanalo blues. Aloha to all you hawaiian music lovers. ohana means family, regardless or color or creed. enjoy, kick back, sing along, and make-a bruddah. shaka

I love this music! I grew up in Waimanalo and used to listen to this music all the time. I actually knew Billy & Jimmy. I love the sound and feel of this band. It reminds me of when I was young and walking home from school slurping on a shave ice, or sitting at the beach and watching the swells come in. I'm really sorry this band can no longer play together. It is a real treat to hear "Waimanalo Blues" or "Hello Waimanalo" while sitting at my desk at work in California. It makes me homesick! If you want a taste of real Hawaii, try this CD. It's "da kine"! I also recommend Gabby Pahinui and Sunday Manoa.

I admit it - the first time I heard KOL was Molly Chambers on the VW Jetta commercial, and as anti-music-for-advertising as I am, there was no way of denying that this was real rock n' roll. So I bought the song, listened to it about a hundred times and realized that my initial assessment was correct.

Then I bought the Holy Roller CD and was even further convinced, if that were possible. Another reviewer stated that these guys sound like they invented rock n' roll, and that's so true - and it needs to be invented every once in while. When contemporary music gets to the point where image and hype supplant talent and energy, fortunately there's always someone or some band to shake things up and make it new again.

The Stones did it (may they rest in peace), Alice Cooper did it, the Ramones did it, Nirvana did it, and KOL does it.

This is a great album.

this band sounds nothing like the strokes. they may have opened for the strokes but they don't sound like them. they sound completely different. KOL sound like good rock 'n' roll. i am a big fan of both bands though. i bought this ep for the track "wicker chair" and "different" version of "california waiting"(which is my favorite KOL song). number one the version of "California waiting" is not that different then the version on their debut full length "youth & youngmanhood" but the track "wicker chair" makes this worth the $2.72 it cost me to get this. if you have a couple extra bucks and wanna hear an early KOL song you might not have, this is a good purchase.

This is KOL's first release. It includes a different version of California Waiting from what was later released on their 1st album. It also includes Wicker Chair, which as been released on a number of CD Singles (and a Japanese album) but remains unreleased on any other album.

Because you either adore or detest the Kings of Leon, and because the band has not only made it but is obviously going to be a major voice in rock, I see no point in the host of reviews that are either cheerleading or dissing them. I've not seen a band generate so much love/hate since the Stones broke in way back in 1964 (and I'm old enough to remember that very clearly).

Personally, I'm convinced KOL will be one of the greatest bands ever (and I can count the number of bands I've said that about over the last 40 years on one hand)....and yes, I've seen them live more than once.

For those of you who don't want to miss a moment of the bliss as it arrives, here is a comprehensive list of what KOL has released. Here is a key to the notations so you won't miss any of their releases:

Rock'n'Roll That Isn't Product

If you've never heard Kings of Leon, this is as good a place to start as any. I can't say what exactly it is that attracts me to this music, except to note that I seem to have become a very withered old soul when it comes to popular music, and the song "Holy Roller Novocaine" is the first since "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (which was a very long time ago, in the scheme of things) to get my pulse going.

OK, I lied: I do know what attracts me to this music, it's just embarrassing to admit: They sound like they just invented rock'n'roll, which is no small achievement in the 21st Century. They play like they really mean it, and they also play like they don't give a damn, which is what the really good stuff sounds like. I envy them their purity of spirit, and I also fear for their souls, because the Great Hype is well underway, because no matter what they think they're doing, their record company sees them as generators of Product, and Product is what they'll be soon enough unless they are very smart and very tough. I wish them all the luck in the world, and if they never do anything else, they at least laid down these tracks, which give an old rocker hope that it is still possible at this late date to make rock'n'roll that isn't Product.

I was recommended this album back in May of 2003 by a cd store owner who asked me what I liked to listen to. He hit the nail on the head for sure. The Kings of Leon are a band that FINALLY manages to reinstate some hope in me for the future of rock and roll.

Don't listen to people when they say these guys are "steeped in southern rock" - these kids grew up not being permitted to listen to any kind of rock music. They didn't even know who Lynard Skynard WAS until people started telling them "uh...you kinda sound like them." Their music, interestingly enough, IS somewhat reminiscent of roadtripping through Tennessee, pounding back Coors Original and making out with strangers in sleazy off-highway motels. But it's more than that.

Their songs are melodic, thoughtful, heart-felt and honest, and for a band that has little experience being an actual band and even less at making out with strange dirty-girls, these guys manage to create music that surpasses many groups that have been trying for years. "The Southern Strokes"? Nah, not even close. A band like the Strokes has too much hipster attitude that it overshadows any attempt at writing good music they make. The Kings of Leon...they probably only recently learned what the word "hipster" even means.

The Moffatt brothers proved their talent to the world a long time ago. This recent US release, Chapter1: A New Begining, reinforces that and expands on it. They have added a few hidden tracks also, which in my opinion are even better than the rest of the already commendable tracks. The Moffatts are showing their true colors. Let it shine guys!

The best way to describe the sound of this brilliant band would be to imagine Michael Nesmith singing Uncle Tupelo. Can you picture that? Really, this is special stuff. The "Hawks" third release is their most consistant yet. While their first two releases were near perfect, they featured strong material throughout, but there was always two or three stand-out tracks that wouldn't leave your head for days. This one doesn't seem to have that, but overall, it seems the material is stronger as a whole. As my previous reviews stated, their music's been labelled "California Alt-country", and I don't know of any bands out today who have this sound. Priceless!

The Best Of Vince's Early Solo Work

Since the early '90s, Vince Gill has been one of the most popular artists in country music because of his work on the MCA label. His recording career, however, began back in 1979; first as lead singer of the Pure Prairie League ("Let Me Love You Tonight") and then as a solo artist for RCA.

The Essential Vince Gill offers 10 of the 11 singles he recorded while at RCA between 1983 and 1988 (curiously missing is "If It Weren't For Him," his top 10 duet with Roseanne Cash). Among the gems found here are the rousing "Turn Me Loose," the heartbreaking "Oh Carolina," and the mandolin featured "Cinderella." "Everybody's Sweetheart" was a tongue-in-cheek comment on his then-more-famous wife Janis, of Sweethearts of the Rodeo, while "The Radio" presented a touching ode to his oft-touring Sweetheart.

The remaining 10 tracks included here are often as strong as the singles and includes the original version of his 1990 hit "Never Knew Lonely." Most of these recordings hold their own with Gill's more celebrated MCA stuff. Maybe he wasn't promoted properly at RCA or the timing wasn't right for Gill back then. Whatever the reason, it is nice to have such an attractive set available of Gill's early solo work.

Vince became a major country star because of his first MCA album, When I call your name, and the singles from it. His career before then was one of slow but steady progress, beginning with Boone Creek (a bluegrass group that also featured Ricky Skaggs) then Pure Prairie League (a country rock group). The RCA recordings he made during the eighties showed promise of what was to come, yielding several major country hits. Vince wrote or co-wrote most of his own songs but occasionally recorded outside songs.

Apart from his duet with Rosanne Cash (If it weren't for him), all his essential recordings from this period of his career are included, notably Victim of life's circumstances, Turn me loose, Oh Carolina, Oklahoma borderline and Cinderella. One song that wasn't released during this time (Never knew lonely) should have been - Vince re-recorded it for MCA and had a huge country hit with it.

This collection contains plenty of variety, which some songs that really rock, some heartfelt ballads and the occasional nod to his roots in bluegrass. His then-wife was one-half of Sweethearts of the Rodeo, who had much greater success. Their success was the inspiration for a couple of the songs here (Everybody's sweetheart, The radio) and may have indicated that their marriage was in trouble - they eventually divorced but not as soon as these songs might suggest.

Several collections of Vince's RCA music have been released since his success with MCA but this is by far the best - however, if you particularly want that duet with Rosanne Cash, you can find it on Platinum and gold collection, which has fewer tracks overall. If you enjoy his more famous MCA music, this is definitely worth a listen.

Phil Coulter is not widely known in Australia and his music is very hard to find, so consequently I went to Amazon to obtain a copy. I found Country Serenity very easy listening and would recommend it to Country Music fans.

Heard the song - If tomorrow never comes - as a background song on
a video and loved the song. Found out it was a Phil Coulter song.
I had never heard of Phil Coulter but fell in love with his songs.
Some CD's I enjoy more than others but Country Serenity will be my
favorite for a long while. For some reason, hearing the melodies
make me feel safe, contented and happy, like a rainy weekend with
a hot cup of coffee and a good book. Yummy!

Country Serenity is a RIP OFF!!

I am (WAS) a big Phil Coulter fan and I'm shocked that he would resort to this type of deception! Country Serenity is the same album as Classic Country with a different album cover -- the songs are identical. What a WASTE of money!!! Sorry Phil but you won't fool me and hopefully no one else again.

What ever happened to honesty in this world????

A lovely mix

Unlike the other reviewer, I think this is a beautiful album. In fact I bought 3, one for myself and two as gifts for friends. The selections are pop genre, but popularized as vocals. Some of us like instrumentals, and these are just as gorgeous as such in Coulter's style, and the very essence of serenity. In the year and a half I have had this CD I have listened to it hundreds of times and enjoyed them all.

I have nearly all of Phil Coulter's CD's and I love them all. I could always tell from the titles of the CD's what kind of music they would contain. With Country Serenity, however, this was not the case. There are only about 3 songs I would consider country, maybe not even that many. I wasn't looking for twangy country western stuff, because I know Coulter is very conservative and right on in his choices but most of them seemed to come from the pop genre, which I would never buy. Needless to say I was very disappointed.
