The true meaning of cowboy music

Ian Tyson has had a place in my cd player for a long time. His songs aren't run of the mill western songs from Nashville, but real cowboy songs from a man who understands the meaning. Having moved south from the areas he sings about, it is good to hear about home. Any thing Mr. Tyson records has a place with me!

This is classic Ian Tyson cowboy fare. This is not Country Western, this is the real deal "Real Cowboy" music. I love it! Ian Tyson is at his best when he sings his own compositions!

If you've never listened before to Ian Tyson, you're in for a treat. If you like cowboy country and western music, you're in for a treat. Ian has the most "dance'able" music I have ever heard! You'll not be disappointed.

There's something magical and perfect about the blend of storytelling and musicianship that Ian Tyson captures on this session. Not every song, but the best ones are heartbreakingly perfect. His later cd, "Eighteen Inches of Rain", is a close second.

Not only is this Ian Tyson's best album, it's one of the best country-WESTERN albums ever. Every song rings true about life as a cowboy in the Canadian and American West. Ian's clear, strong voice is amazing and so are the heartfelt words to every song. I bought the cassette a couple decades ago after reading a review in an alternative-weekly newspaper and then saw him in concert in Virginia; I then bought the CD as soon as it was available. This CD is simply WONDERFUL.

Peerless Clean and Mean Country -- Hag's Way

All the alt-country, neo-folk, new-Americana wannabees out there trying to carry the torch better listen closely to this 1981 Hag classic for how this should be done. The big man's songwriting was peaking, introspective and personal as usual, but with good humor, wit, and class at the same time. Hag's infatuation with western swing was also growing, and was used to great effect here, highlighting and illustrating the lyrics without sounding intrusive. The production is minimal and clean, and really sounds great. The title track, his raucous song about ridin' the rails ("Good Old American Guest"), and many others make this a superior collection that stands the test of time. Thank you Merle!

Arguably Merle's best album of the Epic years, this is a no-filler, must-have for any serious student of country music. The remastered disc sounds superb and is worth the price if you've got the older cd issue. I dispute the reviewer who asserts that Haggards Epic years were wasted with the exception of this classic. The Epic albums do have a different sound than the earlier Capitol years but that's only a natural progression of a man entering his 40's in a time when Nashville was swinging back to the "Urban Cowboy" pop period. Merle never gave in to the "Big City" sound and this album stands in clear contrast to much of what filled the airwaves then...and now. Pick it up and thank me later.

A country classic

This may well be the finest of many excellent albums that Merle has recorded. The album yielded three major country hits - the title track (about a man in the city yearning to return to the country), My favorite memory (a very romantic song) and Are the good times really over (remembering the fifties).

There are plenty of other high quality songs too, including Good old American guest (a brilliant train song), I think I'm gonna live forever (about being glad that a failed relationship is over), Stop the world and let me off (about being upset that a failed relationship is over - this is a cover of a song most commonly associated with Patsy Cline), You don't have very far to go (a song that Merle wrote in the sixties) and I always get lucky with you (an excellent way to finish the original album.

As a bonus, this re-mastered edition includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks (Call me, I won't give up my train) - so there is more music than before and the sound is also improved. What more could anybody want? I think that this is an outstanding album by a country music legend.

Until now, I have been unable to locate my FAVORITE Sylvia song, "Like Nothing Ever Happened," either on CD or as a download, and there has, therefore, long been a significant hole in my collection of 80s country. The song was a HUGE hit on country radio back in the 80s and it seems curious that her hits "Drifter," "Tumbleweed," and "Nobody" -- not to mention a number of her songs that NEVER MADE IT onto the radio nor the charts -- have been available for some time now, but "Like Nothing Ever Happened" has not.

Anyway . . . this CD is certainly not a comprehensive Sylvia collection but for those who have been searching for "Like Nothing Ever Happened," it's a dream-come-true!

Title: The title is "Nobody"! NOT, "Nobody's Darling But Mine"

Sheesh! Once I get past how disgusted and puzzled I feel that the compilers named Sylvia's two million seller "Nobody's Darling But Mine", instead of it's actual one word title, "Nobody"... WHAT??? I can't believe it!!! I must say... I wish it WAS Sylvia singing that old classic "Nobody's Darling But Mine". That would have been a great treat.

Anyhow, I was in shock when I came across this CD. I was browsing online and I noticed this title. At first I thought it probably was a various artist's CD. But I quickly realized that it really was a Sylvia CD that
I didn't even know existed. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that it had been released back in February, as I'm usually first in line whenever ANY Sylvia album is released. Which, sadly is much TOO seldom.
We, who love to add to our beloved Sylvia collection, have been so deprived over the years of Sylvia music, that I can only imagine is locked in the RCA archives.

I'm ALWAYS on the look out for ANY Sylvia CD that I've never heard before. In fact, it would feel like I struck gold if ever I were to find a collection of Sylvia songs that I've never heard of.

However, all the tracks on this one (I'm happy to say) I've had in my collection for many years. It would have been a dream come true if it contained even just one previously unreleased track. But, with that said, I'm very pleased to see it contain two very rare album cuts.
"Isn't It Always Love" from the "Surprise" album and the beautiful, most underrated "You Can't Go Back Home" from her "Just Sylvia" album. I KNOW that is a track many people have been looking for.

Sylvia's beautiful voice, along with those two tracks alone, earn this collection 5 bright stars! I highly recommend you adding this CD to your collection, even though they messed it up. Which, by the way Sylvia had no input in this compilation. I'm hoping Sony/BMG will do a reprint and correct the mistake soon.

Why did Capitol owned the rights to such Eddie's classics as "Step By Step", "You Can't Run From Love" and "Someone Could Lose A Heart Tonight." He must be rolling in his grave about that. One of these days, Warner Bros. will get their act together and buy back his 1981-1984 recordings.

I agree with alot of the people reviews here. I bought this cd and was disappointed. There is alot of hits missing. Why is it that Lionel Richie, Kenny Rodgers, John Denver, and countless others, can come out with box sets but Eddie cannot.

The record companies need to wake up and release a 4-5 compact disc set that includes all of his best hits and songs.

I would like to echo the 5-star raves of critics who have commented before me, but from the standpoint of a 40-year old yankee record-junkie who has continued to return to this record from a giant and extensively diverse collection (2,000+ records) through the dozen years that I have owned it. It is THAT charming! Once you understand the mood which is satisfied by the soothing calm which Eddy's basso intoning these great western tales (never mind those incredible yodels!), nothing else will do. A uniquely appealing record that I would insist must be included in any collection that would call dare to make a claim to being comprehensive. It is a short list of $14 items which can bring you this much pleasure.

"CATTLE CALL" . . . i remember so clearly the day back in 1963 when i received this LP in the mail from RCA's Record Club . . . i always loved "cowboy songs of the west" (probably every kid growing up in the 50's in America watched every cowboy on television and heard the songs of the west) . . . so when i plopped the vinyl LP onto the stereo turntable and heard that golden voice of Eddy Arnold deliver these ballads it was like visiting "familiar territory".

Eddy recorded and re-recorded the title song "CATTLE CALL" many times, but the rendition of it he put down on THIS album is perfect and crystal-clear . . .when he hits that Eddy Arnold yodel "hoo-hoo-hoo-hoohooo" you just have to try to sing along with him (even if you can't reach the notes that Eddy did) . . . this song and this recording has held up remarkably as a classic and never ever loses its magic or appeal no matter how often you play it or hear it.

The tracks are all great: "The Streets Of Loredo" . . . "Cool Water" . . . "The Wayward Wind" . . . "Carry Me back To The Lone Prarie" (Oh Bury Me Not On The Lone Prarie) . . . "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" . . .

But two of my favorites are: "Where The Mountains Meet The Sky" which talks about a cowboy heading off into that sunset of eternity.

And; "Jim, I Wore A Tie Today"(the first one that i ever wore) . . . a song about burying an old friend and travelling companion.

I guess the old west had countless "sad stories" to tell, and nothing told them better than a song . . . and few ever sag the songs better than did EDDY ARNOLD . . . and this album is among Eddy's very very best!

I was thrilled to first get it and hear it on LP back in 1963 when i was just fifteen . . . and it is such a blessing to be able to listen to it now in pristince crystal clear CD format and quality. "Old Cowboys never die . . . they don't fade away . . . they live on compact disc!" :)

Thanks EDDY ARNOLD for sharing so much of your talent with us through your performances and recordings over the decades, and thanks for THIS album, "CATTLE CALL"! It is one i will alway enjoy and appreciate and cherish.

The description "complete" on box sets gets more ridiculous all the time. Only 45 songs from a guy who had 9 of the top 40 albums on the Billboard country chart at the same time?! Those 90 songs would barely be the beginning of a real Complete Hank Jr. Better off getting the bargain price CD reissues of the original albums than a bogus set like this.

This is some of the best deathcore iv'e heard. The whole thing is just amazing. If you like Genesis you will love this.. I think it is way better than genesis. I think this cause Jonny's voice goes from low growls to pig squeals to high pitched screams. On genesis he doesn't even do any pig squeals, it's pretty gay. Buy it if you like Carnifex, Misericordiam, Whitechapel... You'll love this

I am a really big fan of metal in the extreme metal genres, and earlier this year I bought the "Genesis" album by Job For A Cowboy. It hit me right on spot. I love it, so I thought, as the collector and die-hard metal fan I am, I have to have this bands EP too. Now I must say that "Doom" by JFAC is an amazing piece of work. The EP is even more raw and crazy than their full-length album. The sound and aggression is devastating and the intro on the cd is so sick and brutal that you can actually scare people by playing it. I love this band and would really recommend anybody who is into death metal, deathcore, metalcore, black metal or any other extreme genre to check this band out. In my opinion you will not be disappointed.
