Once again, a great band, that was signed in an effort to find the next Guns n' Roses, goes by the wayside. But not without a fight. This self-titled release on Geffen Records came out in '89 and featured a dirty slice of Hollywood rock n' roll with some southern roots underlying the whole damn thing. A sure-fire debut disc? Maybe. "Blooze" is a song about hard-core drinking. "Hot Rod" is about the love of havin' a really fast car. "Simple Man" was a roots-rockin' ballad. And "Hollywood" was about the band's East Hollywood surroundings. I could go on & on but what's the point. All ten tracks are great. The subject matter is fantastic. And no one could quite string together a series of phrases like David Roach. The band had a bit of success with a couple of singles, got some airplay on the legendary Los Angeles radio station, KNAC, had some videos on Headbanger's Ball & were able to play the record out on the road. "Texas" was a song about Roach & Gates' home state. While "Hands Off" was all about a woman cheatin' on her man. A crowd-favorite live. The lyrics are absolutely hilarious. Gates' riffs on his beloved Gretsch sound superb, Clay Anthony did a solid job holding down the bass & Roach prowled the stage live like a rapid dog. A great effort. A great live band. A great record that never quite broke through.

They so deserved more

I remember back in the day finding this on cassette. I wore it to a frazle. Then I found a radio station promo copy that came inside this pop up junkyard. This is great stuff. Its basically blues rock mixed with punk and southern rock. There is nothing flashy about these guys. Its all about the music. I was at a show in the 80's were they co headlined with another under rated band ( Dangerous Toys). My friends and I were privledged to see one of those shows were every thing was in line and the bands were just in rare form. That night will always stand out as a rare moment in time. David Roach is a frontman in the same vain as Tyler.

Do yourself a favor...don't listen to this when you want some amazing musicianship, because it isn't here. But if you want a fun rock n' roll album, this'll do just fine. The songs are fairly simple, with the occasional good guitar solo. They really should just play Junkyard in bars, and leave it at that, because that's where they fit.

I've loved this band since the early 1990s, and to have a DVD with virtually all the videos to their greatest songs on it is a must have for my collection. I'd have to say that my two fav videos are November Rain and Don't Cry. Axl has a unique and unmistakeable voice while Slash would have to be rated up there as one of the greatest lead guitarists of all time.

Long live Guns n' Roses!

Why is "You Could Be Mine" not included here? Maybe it's related to Arnold or the song being in the movie, but it's very unsatisfying to watch this and see no YCBM on it. Also, I wish Sweet Child O'Mine could have been the full version of the song (without the truncated intro), but that's not the band's fault I would guess, but the record label. Anyway, this is a standard DVD so it looks lame in terms of picture quality, but converted to 320x240 AVC and playing on my PSP it looks great!

This is an absolute must for any Guns N' Roses fan! It is a fantastic collection of almost all of their popular videos from 1987 on. The line up includes the following songs: Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O' Mine, Paradise City, Patience, Don't Cry, Live and Let Die, November Rain, Yesterdays, The Garden, Dead Horse, Garden of Eden, Estranged and Since I Don't Have You. This is the group that showed even metal could have top hits. It's too bad that personalities caused the group's collapse with the original members when their music was at its best. Long live the old Guns N' Roses, my personal favorite band! Have a brew, sit and relax in your home while watching these fine and classic videos.

A straight run through of 13 Gunners video clips in chronological order.

No booklet (which is usual for DVD's). Not even internal cover art.

No extras. No interview footage. No insight into the creative process.

If you don't like the style of the first part of this review you may not like the idea of this release. Or the lack of one. What annoys me is that it would of been good to have had something other than the songs to entertain the viewer with. That might of been a nice idea. Or they could of made this a double disc and transferred the Makin' videos series onto DVD to add value. It probably would of been a nice idea. They could of used some of the millions they've earned off the buying public to put some extra value into this release with at least a booklet or something. Or some behind the scenes footage from the making of some of these videos. Now THAT would of been a really nice idea.

I wholeheartedly recommend buying this DVD for the sheer brilliance of the enclosed hard rock/heavy metal music. You simply can't go past the visceral Welcome to the Jungle, the simply brilliant Sweet Child O' Mine or the genius of concept with November Rain. You can't but nod your head in appreciation of a band that was swimming in money still coming out with videos like The Garden or Dead Horse or having the intestinal fortitude to try something like Estranged.

My issue is not with the music, but the lacklustre packaging and almost arrogance of the powers that be that we'll buy this no matter what. And you know what grates? That they are right. This is really great music and some great video making with ideas and soul. It's a pity this package didn't have some. Actually, don't buy it. Download it.

Perhaps the best "heavy metal" album I have every heard. I learned of Motorhead from listening to Metallica and after purchasing a copy of this album is was clear why Metallica was so influenced by this band. The energy and blistering sound Motorhead displays on this album is so unique. From Lemmy's gritty vocals and distorted bass to Philthy Phil's fast, bombastic drumming to Fast Eddie's razor riffs and blistering solos, Ace of Spades is an excersice in fast, raw, dirty rock 'n' roll music. There is simply not a bad song on this album. This is Motorhead at the top of their game. A true classic.

You've got to love Motorhead. These guys have been around since the mid-70's, have forged their own style and pretty much stuck to it for 30 years. It is basic rock n roll at it's most primal with band leader Lemmy leading the charge. Most fans consider "Ace Of Spades" to be the band's all time classic album, and indeed it is a good one, although not without it faults. The title track is probably the band's most recognizable tune (they have never really had a hit at least here in the U.S.) and the rest of the album is also quite strong. There are a few clunkers on this one though, I really don't care much for "Fire Fire", "Dance", "Jailbait" (talk about clichéd lyrics), but there are also some classics like "We Are The Road Crew", and "The Chase Is Better Than The Catch" along with the title track. Moterhead were a little bit ahead of their time in many respects and never reached the commercial success that many of their imitators would later in the 80's and 90's. I find "Ace" to be a good, but not necessarily classic Motorhead album, but a lot of the band's fans would probably disagree.

Motorhead-Ace Of Spades *****

Before I start my official review I just want to say that Motorhead is without a doubt one of the all time greatest bands in the history of rock n' roll. Much in the same way The Ramones are one of the best and have a amazing following yet are not hardly ever given their dues, Motorhead is in the same category.

This is by far Motorheads best album. Ace Of Spades is an unrelenting, take to prisoners, punch you in the face and buy you a beer afterwards sort of rock n' roll album. Lemmy wrote so of his best straight up rock lyrics here, while not as politically charged as some of his later work the lyrics still are great. His vocal performance is rough and satisfying as always. His rumbling bass playing along side Philthy Phill's killer drum grooves and Fast Eddie Clark's amazing, and I do mean amazing guitar work is incredible.

From the rumbling opening riff of the classic title track, 'Ace Of Spades' through the sloppy 'Fast And Loose' (though I think sloppy was the point), the honest 'Jailbait' and the cliche' yet okay when done by a band like Motorhead 'Bite The Bullet' Ace of Spades is a damn near perfect album.

Some versions of the album come with three bonus tracks. These were originally released on a Ep with the band Girlschool. 'Dirty Love' 'Please Don't Touch' and 'Emergency' are all great additions to the end of the album and always make for a great and interesting listen.

It just doesn't get much better than this. This is the kind of rock n' roll album that can truly wear the badge of rock n' roll. It is unapologetic, loud, fast, angry at times and not during others. So if your looking for a Motorhead album this is the one!

A Winning Hand

As I sit here listening to the Ace of Spades album I can't help but say a few words even though another positive review of this classic album isn't at all necessary.
You've undoubtedly heard of this album, own it or at least have heard the title track. Ace of Spades is the most popular and famous Motorhead album. It's their British Steel, Number of the Beast, Dark Side of the Moon, Agents of Fortune, etc, etc. And like those albums, it's very strong and very solid. It's not the best album Motorhead has done, nor is it the only one someone should buy. These guys continue to put out great stuff(look no further than 2004's Inferno for that).
One of the best qualities of Motorhead is that there is no B.S. with these guys. They achieved their legendary status by simply being themselves and never having to compromise. Wanting to continue in the tradition of the original concepts of Rock and Roll music-music that is loud, wild, energetic, tough, dirty and bugs the hell out of parents-Motorhead have made it their mission to be the rowdiest, dirtiest and loudest rock band in the world. And they pull it off in....ahem....Spades.
Motorhead hate being categorized as a heavy metal band. In many ways they are quite different than the metal bands of that time, but they do share the same intensity of those bands, even surpassing many of them. Because of it's volume and energy, it's quite easy to see why they earn this label. It is easier to think of them more as a very loud and energetic biker type rock band. The album cover pretty much sums up the sound of the band-Rough looking outlaw looking types who don't look like the kind of guys you wanna screw around with.
Ace of Spades is a very good intro to the newcomer. Some disagree with me, but I really don't feel there are any filler songs on this album. It is a great starting point, but don't think it's the only great album they did.

Many people think this ablum is not even close to classic status. If you don't like the album deal with it because this is "unique" AC/DC, in fact this is the most unique AC/DC album out there. This is like a PINK FLOYD album because you don't appreciate the album until you listened to it multiple times. This album feathers two tracks that made it on the charts, "Big Jack" and "Rock'N Roll." These songs were played often on classic rock and metal stations as well. I'm sure other tracks like, "War Machine" will be aired on the radio. OK, lets move on to the last 1/3 of the album. "Stormy may day," is the most unique track off the album. This track is often associated to LED ZEPPELIN, in other words the guitar work is associated to Jimmy Page's gutar work. Now the critics can't yap about the fact that AC/DC hasn't "changed" much. The follow-up track is,"She likes Rock'N Roll." This is very similar to the track "If you dare" off of the album THE RAZORS EDGE!!! In both tracks you can hear Cliff Williums very well! Then comes the heart-pumping anthum "Money Where you hear Brian Johnson singing,"WORK WORK MONEY MADE...THAT'S MONEY MADE". This is a perfect track for blue collar workers who work very hard for money! You can associate this track to the track "Money Talks". Then comes my favorite track "Rock'N Roll Dream". This here is a ballad. This is right up there with the opening track "Rock'N Roll Train." This track makes Phil Rudd work very hard on the drums. This track enphasizes Phil Rudd's drumming because this song has Angus and Malcom taking multiple rests on the guitars while Phil is busy doing the drumming with a ciggarette in his mouth.
OK, I would like to talk about the middle of the album. Many critics said that this is the weakest part of the ablum. I disagree. Why? Because the critics are always wrong! The middle of the album features, "Wheels" which is a song that has an resemblance of the 1979 classic "HIGHWAY TO HELL".
OK, I don't want to spend literally a day to review this ablum because I have a life. The last things I would like to convey to you are; this album is their best selling album since "BACK IN BLACK". This album sold 6 million copyies by January. This album is AC/DC's 3rd best seller so far. That is proof that this is better then the over rated album "Let There Be Rock." This album could possibly sell more then the ever lasting classic "BACK IN BLACK" which sold 48 million copies. BLACK ICE is a great album! That is my message. This album deserves more respect. As time passes you and other AC/DC fans will acknowledge that this is a huge improvement and that Angus and Malcom haven't ran out of ideas. This had over 50 songs lined up for this album.

Thank you, for your time.

What is wrong with ac/dc? They say they sold their souls to the devil. That devil must be Wal Mart, how Rock and Roll. I guess I can't buy their music since I don't belong to that exclusive club. Why no downloads either? Am I the only one who thinks that it absolutely wrong for a band to blatantly sell out like that? Eagles included. Are they really hurting for money? I don't get it. I don't like green day, but at least they don't let it bother them that Wally world won't carry their music. I don't have to listen to this cd to give a review, Angus himself says they keep making the same album over and over. People keep buying it, I don't get it. What happened to all the bands that had integrity. I can't think of any but Led Zep. Everyone else is into American Idol, Rock Band and Guitar hero, how cheesy. Its a shame that there will never be another classic album or song written ever.

I've been a fan of AC/DC since High Voltage came out in 1976 and I've been following and listening to them ever since. Along the way I have seen blistering live shows by the band, and heard some real hits and misses with their CD releases. I was really surprised at how consistently good 2008's Black Ice is as a CD. It's their strongest release since 1990's The Razor's Edge, and might even be a little better than that release. It's no Back in Black, but it's damn close in quality and performances. Who would have thought that AC/DC would still be rocking this hard 30+ years after they started?

There are a lot of great songs on this release, but my favorites are 'Rock n Roll Train', 'Anything Goes', 'Smash n Grab' and 'Spoilin for a Fight'. The Young brothers guitar work is strong, and the Angus solos are still as energetic and passionate as ever. The rhythm section with Phil Rudd on drums and Cliff Williams on bass is steady and powerful. And Brian Johnson's vocals are strong and as listenable as they have ever been.

I take away one star for the bands choice to make the new release a "Wal-Mart Exclusive". Bad move, since many people don't shop at Wal-Mart for many reasons, myself included. But when I eventually picked it up off of Amazon, I was very pleasantly surprised with how good it is.

Highly recommended for AC/DC fans.

When I found out AC/DC was finaly releasing their new album in 2008 I was extreemly excited. But what I didn't like was how this was supposed to be a Wal-mart exclusive album. That to me is a big sell out move right there. Didn't see the point of that. I guess they feel they want to help Wal-mart's sells. I found myself in a Wal-mart seeing AC/DC displays with all of thier cds and new t-shirts and this album with 3 different covers, red, and the limited edition white and yellow logos. Now onto the album itself. Too much of my disapointment this is not the excellent, long awaited, in your face album we all wanted. In fact I really like their previous effort, 2000's Stiff Upper Lip, much better then this. The album starts off good with the lead single Rock N Roll Train which is probably the album's best song. This song is as good to me as any classic AC/DC song. Skies On Fire is the next one. Another pretty good rocking song slower then the predecessor. Big Jack comes in and it's nothing special. Just seems like filler to me. Anything Goes doesen't do too much. Just sounds like the band is going through the motions. I won't do anymore track by track sections but I have heard this album quite a bit and can't really name another song that really grabbed me. The songs just sound bland to me with no real punch. I would think since it took them 8 years to make this album they would have worked harder and spent more time and effort on their songs. It's worth having for the collection but it's not a classic. This album ranks nowhere near the greatness of Back In Black, Highway To Hell, Powerage, or For Those About To Rock We Sallute You. I would even take Flick Of The Switch over this which I thought was a great album. It's definetly worth a listen but I consider this one in the league of weak albums like Blow Up Your Video, Fly On The Wall and Ballbreaker.

There is something about UFO that keeps me loving them. I have never stopped listening to UFO ever since that summer in 1980 when I bought PHENOMENON (Still my favorite, then NO HEAVY PETTING),and I emersed myself into their world. I know I was a late comer to their music. Mostly because I thought AC/DC and LED ZEPPELIN were the only bands out back then. But UFO really do a great job at being a Hard Rock Band.

The stand out tracks on this album, to me anyways are - "LONG GONE", "MAKIN' MOVES", and my very personal favorite "COULD'NT GET IT RIGHT". For some reason that song just gets me feeling good. It's because of that song that I deem this the Greatest Non Schenker Album!

OK, as a big UFO fan I had to spring for this, my 5th copy of WWI (Orig LP, Import LP, orig CD, Japan rem CD). I have to say, if all the latest remasters are this good I'll be about a hundred bucks poorer very soon, as I'll be tracking down the rest of them. From the opening notes of "Chains, Chains", it's obvious that this edition is special. The remastering is very well done- the clarity and separation of instruments is amazing. I could hear harmonies (both guitar and voice) that seemed new, even after hearing these songs literally hundreds of times before. Unlike many modern "remasters", this one isn't a contributor to the "loudness wars". I can actually crank it through headphones without a problem. Tried that with Whitesnake's new one and couldn't last a song before I had to EQ the midrange down more than 10db to make it sound right (and still sounded overdriven).

The songs speak for themselves- I definitely agree with those who think this album is under-rated. Mogg's voice and lyrical ideas were at a peak, and 20/20 hindsight proves Chapman was a more than capable replacement for MS. His tone on this record just KILLS! Carter's keys and horns are a great addition, IMO. Just a really great hard rock record beginning to end.

The 3 live bonus tracks are nice, but those first 8 tracks are a tough act to follow. Mogg's voice is a bit tired, but the recording mix does make for an interesting listen- Carter's guitar is in the left channel, his keyboard in the right and Chapman centered. Having seen this lineup on the Mechanix tour, I was often drawn to Carter as he "juggled" guitars, keyboards and horns all night. It was pretty cool to hear that again on these live tracks.

Bottom line- whether you're a UFO fan or just someone who likes melodic hard rock, this is without a doubt a worthwhile purchase. Oh, and these guys are touring the States this Fall- saw them last summer in Santa Cruz and they still rock!

AWESOME!!

I'm being a bit pedantic here.... but NO KING CONTRARY MAN.... in a greatest hits from the Cult???

Three stars only because of that. Otherwise air guitars & head swirls all round for this sometimes bombastic, always rockin' band of British boys. Did I also say pretentious??? Um... only if digested without a sense of humour.

The Cult seem to still have a name for themselves and haven't been forgotten by rock fans, even though they broke up in 1995. Their songs are still on the air. Pure Cult:The Singles is a greatest hits compilation of of the band's biggest and best singles throughout those years. Who doesn't remember the emotional "Fire Woman" or the hard-hitting rockin' tune "Love Removal Machine"? I used to dance to that song many of times hanging out in the clubs.

Singer Ian Astbury's voice is very energetic and has an intense emotion all on it's own -- he wails and screams from song to song. The band's style was rock n roll, but in a slightly electronic new wave style. The album also features the songs:"She Sells Sanctuary" filled with loud rock guitars with an interesting melody and "Fire Woman" and "Sun King" that does have a slight Doors vibe to it. It is a well put together greatest hits collection.

The Cult (or essentially, Billy Duffy and Ian Astbury) had a vision. They were making goth type trendy rock for a little while, even cutting one classic single in the process ("She Sells Sanctuary"). But they got bored with that scene pretty darn fast. Duffy had an obvious AC/DC-Led Zep fixation, and Astbury harbored Jim Morrison fantasies. Enter Rick Rubin.

Rubin stripped the band down to basics. Gone were the echo-drenched early productions, in were the loud, bare-bones Back in Black howling guitars of Electric. "Love Removal Machine" (along with its star-maker video) steamrollered rock radio. The clashing personalities of Duffy and Astbury also made for great interview fodder, and The Cult exploded worldwide.

They were able to hang onto that musical esthetic for Sonic Temple, their only US Top Ten album. It deserved that status, with the band's most solid set of songs. "Fire Woman" was the attention getter, but there was also the very cool "Edie (Ciao Baby)" about Andy Warhol cohort Edie Sedgwick and "Sun King" both vying for airplay. As solid "Sonic Temple" was, the band was imploding. Astbury was falling prey to substance issues and he and Duffy were no longer creating creative sparks when they collided. Duffy wanted to stay with the hard rock, Astbury was getting into mystical/spiritual goo and the booze/dope crushed his focus. The lackluster Ceremony found The Cult fiddling with too many experiments, and "Wild Hearted Son" was the best thing there.

After that, The Cult found the band down to Astbury and Duffy with a rotating list of guests. Bob Rock from "Sonic Temple" was brought back in an attempt to capture the old sound, but the two best songs were "Sacred Life" (not here) and "Coming Down" (which is). Following albums did little to make the band interesting. You could easily just get "Electric" and "Sonic Temple" to get what really mattered about The Cult, since both "Fire Woman" and "Love Removal Machine" would be covered. This Best Of The Cult shows that, while a great band when they were on fire, they couldn't keep that intensity going very long.

Incidentally, 2007's Born into This is suprisingly lively.

This DVD set is hands down the best item I have ever purchased on amazon. I was going back and forth on whether I should buy this DVD/CD set for about a month and I finally purchased it and couldn't be happier. Some of the negative reviews stated that the sound quality was bad which is not true at all. The two dvds show metallica in there prime and they are of pretty good quality. I bought this set originally just for the dvds but have been pleasantly suprised with the three cds from Mexico City, the sound quality of the cds is very very good, not fuzzy one bit and very clear. If you are thinking about buying this product just do it you will not regret it, I watch different songs from the dvds every weekend and it is a product that just keeps giving. Again the quality of the dvds is fine, if it is a little quiet for ou then turn up your volume, I have a bose system and honestly I have not went past 60, the max is 100, so do not be turned away by any negative reviews regarding sound or picture quality.

The last essential Metallica release.

While some people my age are reluctant to admit it these days, Metallica were the Black Sabbath of my generation. They introduced a lot of us to the harsh, darker sounds of heavy metal. If you made the jump from Maiden and Priest to Kreator and Overkill, Metallica was your stepping stone. Their 80s albums continue to pack a wallop.

Metallica had a reputation (and still kind of do) as one of THE most entertaining, energetic bands to see on tour. What you get in this collection are three CDs and a DVD from their Black Album tour, plus a DVD from their Justice tour. It was originally released as three CDs and three VHS tapes in a big, bulky box. The best parts about this updated version, aside from having DVDs instead of tapes, is the compact packaging and the price; this now goes for half what it used to. And what a bargain it is.

The concert on the CDs is way more definitive than S&M, as this music represents Metallica at the end of their prime. No songs from Load/ReLoad/St. Anger here. Plus, obviously, there's no orchestra. The DVDs tell the same story, especially the Justice one. Man, this is the best Metallica concert on the market. It's amazing just how much energy they had back then. Comparing this Seattle concert to Cunning Stunts signifies just how much this band changed in the 90s. This package is worth it for this DVD alone.

The old box set came with a book commemorating their life on the road, but here it's available as a special feature on one of the DVDs as barely readable stills. I don't care, though. The music is what counts.

This box set marks the end of an era for not just for Metallica, but heavy metal in general. Get it.

This set is the Best Metallica concert set I have ever purchased. When it originally was released it was only available in VHS format with a choice of C.D. or cassette for the Mexico City concert, now it is finally on DVD.

All the concert footage presented here proves why Metallica became Rock Gods. Although I have not purchased the last few Metallica albums since they changed their style, I still purchased this set and was very pleased. Only problem was with the stencil and booklet, I prefered the larger size stuff that came with the original boxset; however, the concert footage is still legendary.

My favorite is still the Seattle "And Justice For All" show. This set proves why people who went to see Ozzy Osbourne on his "The Ultimate Sin" tour were really there to see opening act Metallica who were suppoting their Master Of Puppets effort. The stage is explosive with pyrotechniques and Metallica literally destroy the entire stage before ending the show. This alone reminded me of seeing Kiss in their heyday. Best of all they play the full version of "Master Of Puppets" and not the shortened version they have been playing the last few years. Another Gem on this video is the live version of "Breadfan." By far better than the version of "Stone Cold Crazy" that is featured on the "San Diego" set.
But even San Diego is worth mentioning.

Starting with the 20 min. Metallimovie This is basically a review of 2 1/2 years in the life of Metallica redone, then the set blows open with Enter Sandman and you are off and running. After this the set seems to slow down and becomes the Metallica we have heard the last few years (then again I did not like the Black album as well as I did the older albums with exception of "Enter Sandman") The real Gem of this show though is seeing Lars Ulrich and James Helfield dualing on Drums. Plus it is 3 1/2 hours of Metallica Live!

The two CD set of Mexico City is good but not great. The solos are overdone and way too long, good thing you can skip them now. I normally bypass this part of the set. But it was fun playing the unmentioned live version of "So What" to my friends before it became a (Censored) radio regular. So why did I give this set a 5 star review? Because all video taped concerts have their problems, but this concert set is still one of the best produced ones available today.

Skip the other Metallica videos and buy this one. It is the only concert you will need. I should know I just purchased my third copy.

I really don't get the appeal of the supposed "classic" Van Halen late 70's/early 80's period- these albums are quite lackluster to me, as far as songwriting, pop hooks, guitar riffs and solos, and that influential guitar style goes. None of those things come to mind and catch my attention when I hear Van Halen II, and instead I feel bored, VERY bored in fact. What's so great about this album? It starts off with a horrible cover of "It's No Good" with terrible vocals. I don't get the appeal of this version.

"Beautiful Girls" is a great song, along with the exciting "Light up the Sky", and "Dance the Night Away" USED to be a good song until classic rock radio beat it to death. Other than that, I'm not really that impressed with the music on this album, or Van Halen's supposed classic years for that matter. The band comes up WAY short for me.

I have been totally crazy for this killer record ever since it came out. Just a perfect rock performance, which I originally bought as an LP back in the day when I was in seventh grade or something. I've never forgotten it and never gotten over it. I've got the remastered version now, and of course it makes Van Halen sound as fresh and vital as ever. It's loaded with energy just like the first album, and I personally don't consider any of it fluff or filler. Definitely some of Eddie's best solos, riffs and melodic progressions to be found. Of course this was originally sequenced for two sides of a record. Now that I can reorganize the tracks, I've developed my own favorite sequencing. I think it makes for better pacing, which is important, since this is one of only a few CD's I will listen to from start to finish in one sitting. Here's my sequence for what I consider to be the perfect 'set':

1) You're no good
2) Somebody get me a doctor
3) Dance the night away
4) Bottoms up
5) Outta love again
6) Spanish fly
7) D.O.A.
8) Light up the sky
9) Women in love
10) Beautiful girls

That's about 30 minutes of absolute hard rock bliss.

These days? Forget about it. Van Halen wasn't VH without David Lee Roth. He's back now, and that's great. But Van Halen isn't VH without Michael Anthony, either, and he's AWOL. Anthony has a distinctive voice which absolutely made the backing vocals. He also has a singular and highly accomplished style of bass playing. So it's a no-go now, as in no dollars for new CD's or shows, because it just ain't what it should be, or could be.

I think this microphone's still on

Shoulda been I used to think, maybe I'm through thinking so much, right person wrong time, fate intervenes. I suspect fate is fallible but it's got its sway doesn't it. Shoulda been but wasn't meant to be, who am I to argue with destiny, knuckleheaded destiny. All I need is a [transmission interrupted]. Sure enough, good enough, stay in time. "You're no good."

In March of 1979 (thirty years ago this month), California based hard rockers Van Halen unleashed their sophomore effort simply titled Van Halen II.
The album was produced by Ted Templeman whom helmed the first six albums for the band and this album has all but one track written by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, his drummer brother Alex Van Halen, lead singer David Lee Roth and bass player Michael Anthony. The band had momentum coming into their second album. They had a huge selling debut and opened for Journey on their Infinity tour and Black Sabbath on their last tour with Ozzy Osbourne before his firing in 1979 and upstaging them. Later in 1978, the band recorded its second album. Would it be as good as debut or would it stink, read on and find out (as I did when I first got on cassette tape in March, 1985).
The album kicks off with a rocking version of the 1974 Linda Ronstadt hit "You're No Good" with Michael's wild bass before it gives way into the song with Diamond Dave singing the verses and screaming during the chorus as Eddie and Michael sing the chorus and a superb remake which just burns. The hit "Dance the Night Away" follows and was the song that got most attention from this album and a great song. Next is "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" which was another great track. The rock just continues with "Bottoms Up" and a excellent hard rocker with excellent solos from Eddie (this time with phasers and processors making his guitar sound like an Army playing). The frantic rocker "Outta Love Again" ends the first half on a rockin note.
"Light Up the Sky" is a powerful rocker that starts the second half with a bang and the song is noted for its small Alex Van Halen drum solo section. The instrumental "Spanish Fly" follows and showcases Eddie's talents on classical guitar. "D.O.A." (which stands for Dead Or Alive for those curious) is next and one awesome hard rocker and the ending is to be heard to believe. "Women in Love" follows starts sounding to be a ballad in its guitar intro before rocking out. The closing rock radio stapler "Beautiful Girls" is a great song and a great way to close the album.
Van Halen II was to be the band's first US Top 10 album and second million seller. It also proved that Van Halen were in it for the LONG HAUL!
Highly recommended!

Suicide Silence have definately done some growing since their debut, The Cleansing. The song structures in No Time To Bleed are simply a joy to listen to, and yet they still manage to sound brutal as hell. Almost all the songs are filled with a sence of pain or agony. At first, I was a little mad that they decided to throw an insturmental into the mix(...and then she bled) but it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and atmospheric songs on the album. To be honest, I was one of the fans that really liked the Cleansing even if there was a slight repitition problem, but here, Suicide Silence proves that they're one of the leading figures in the deathcore movement

I thought The Cleansing was a decent album and it got me into these guys enough to pick up this album as well. This one has wayyyy more songs that are "listenable" than their previous outing. There actually seems to be a bit more structure to the songs. Some favorites are: "Lifted", "Smoke", "Suffer", "Wasted", "Your Creations", and "Genocide"

I thought The Cleansing was a decent album. Heavy and loud, brutal as all get out, but lacking any spark. At the time, I said that Suicide Silence had the potential to be an awesome band but weren't there yet.

Folks, it's here.

No joke, No Time to Bleed is one of the best heavy-a$$ albums I've heard in some time. I'd put it up with Whitechapel and Bleeding Through. It's one of the few that can be started at the first track and let to run through the full set without the need to skip any. No unnecessary breakdowns, no mismatched intros, just one HELL of a ride.

After listening to this cd at least five times if not more than that already, I think that No Time To Bleed blows The Cleansing away, but I didn't think that until I listened to this cd for the third time. I think you'll enjoy this cd, but it's a little different than The Cleansing. There is songs on here I could live without, but over all is a great cd, and get ready for the headbanging moment of your life. Brutal I think there will be mixed reviews on this cd, but i enjoy it.
My favorite songs on No Time To Bleed are:
1. Something Invisible
2. Suffer
3. Your Creations
4. Smoke
5. Wake Up

If you got Maximum Bloodshed Edition I also love the song Misleading Milligrams. Have to love it.

I can't think of any other band that sounds like these guys. They are truly unique and although I don't like everything that they do, there is certainly a lot of talent to be found here. The music combines elements of Nu-metal, progressive rock, and Zappa-ish mayhem. Some of it is funny, some serious and some just plain over the top. Lead vocalist Serj Tankian has an almost operatic voice that is very different from anyone else I can think of out there. The band remind me a bit of The Mars Volta at times, although SOD's music is more blunt and to the point. Highlights include "Attack", "Kill Rock N Roll", "Lonely Day", and "Soldier Side". This is a band that I have to be in the right mood to listen to, and I kind of have to take them in small doses, but there is no doubt that SOD are one of the more unique bands in mainstream rock today.

Compressed to **** with the volume jacked. Typical of loudness war merchandise, but taken to a new level. Possibly worse than even Californication. Exhausting and unlistenable.

Just got into an argument this weekend about clipping in commercial releases, so i had to give this cd another listen. I hadn't listened to it since it first came out and it bothered me so much that i probably listened to it 10 times or less. I love System and listened to all of their other albums obsessively, but I could not get into Hypnotize (and not because of the music itself). Anyway, this cd was just as bad as I remembered it.

It was a struggle to choose 1 or 2 stars, but i had to go with 1 since i i feel that even if the music is worth more than 1 star, the point is moot since you cannot listen to it. No one should pay money for this, since that will just encourage the industry's race to the bottom.

Now i'm afraid to buy any newly remastered albums because it takes too much research to find out if it's a legit remaster or (more likely) some hack job where the original album was just compressed and volume boosted.

Since Mezmerize and Hypnotize are like a double album, this is really making me question how i didn't have this strong of a reaction to Mezmerize. Now that i am more sensitive to these things though, i think that if i go back and listen to Mezmerize again, it might ruin the album for me. I will just have to let my time enjoying that album be a pleasant memory and never listen to it again.

Isn't anyone embarrassed?
