No booklet (which is usual for DVD's). Not even internal cover art.
No extras. No interview footage. No insight into the creative process.
If you don't like the style of the first part of this review you may not like the idea of this release. Or the lack of one. What annoys me is that it would of been good to have had something other than the songs to entertain the viewer with. That might of been a nice idea. Or they could of made this a double disc and transferred the Makin' videos series onto DVD to add value. It probably would of been a nice idea. They could of used some of the millions they've earned off the buying public to put some extra value into this release with at least a booklet or something. Or some behind the scenes footage from the making of some of these videos. Now THAT would of been a really nice idea.
I wholeheartedly recommend buying this DVD for the sheer brilliance of the enclosed hard rock/heavy metal music. You simply can't go past the visceral Welcome to the Jungle, the simply brilliant Sweet Child O' Mine or the genius of concept with November Rain. You can't but nod your head in appreciation of a band that was swimming in money still coming out with videos like The Garden or Dead Horse or having the intestinal fortitude to try something like Estranged.
My issue is not with the music, but the lacklustre packaging and almost arrogance of the powers that be that we'll buy this no matter what. And you know what grates? That they are right. This is really great music and some great video making with ideas and soul. It's a pity this package didn't have some. Actually, don't buy it. Download it.

Ace Of SpadesReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2008-04-27
Before I start my official review I just want to say that Motorhead is without a doubt one of the all time greatest bands in the history of rock n' roll. Much in the same way The Ramones are one of the best and have a amazing following yet are not hardly ever given their dues, Motorhead is in the same category.
This is by far Motorheads best album. Ace Of Spades is an unrelenting, take to prisoners, punch you in the face and buy you a beer afterwards sort of rock n' roll album. Lemmy wrote so of his best straight up rock lyrics here, while not as politically charged as some of his later work the lyrics still are great. His vocal performance is rough and satisfying as always. His rumbling bass playing along side Philthy Phill's killer drum grooves and Fast Eddie Clark's amazing, and I do mean amazing guitar work is incredible.
From the rumbling opening riff of the classic title track, 'Ace Of Spades' through the sloppy 'Fast And Loose' (though I think sloppy was the point), the honest 'Jailbait' and the cliche' yet okay when done by a band like Motorhead 'Bite The Bullet' Ace of Spades is a damn near perfect album.
Some versions of the album come with three bonus tracks. These were originally released on a Ep with the band Girlschool. 'Dirty Love' 'Please Don't Touch' and 'Emergency' are all great additions to the end of the album and always make for a great and interesting listen.
It just doesn't get much better than this. This is the kind of rock n' roll album that can truly wear the badge of rock n' roll. It is unapologetic, loud, fast, angry at times and not during others. So if your looking for a Motorhead album this is the one!

You've undoubtedly heard of this album, own it or at least have heard the title track. Ace of Spades is the most popular and famous Motorhead album. It's their British Steel, Number of the Beast, Dark Side of the Moon, Agents of Fortune, etc, etc. And like those albums, it's very strong and very solid. It's not the best album Motorhead has done, nor is it the only one someone should buy. These guys continue to put out great stuff(look no further than 2004's Inferno for that).
One of the best qualities of Motorhead is that there is no B.S. with these guys. They achieved their legendary status by simply being themselves and never having to compromise. Wanting to continue in the tradition of the original concepts of Rock and Roll music-music that is loud, wild, energetic, tough, dirty and bugs the hell out of parents-Motorhead have made it their mission to be the rowdiest, dirtiest and loudest rock band in the world. And they pull it off in....ahem....Spades.
Motorhead hate being categorized as a heavy metal band. In many ways they are quite different than the metal bands of that time, but they do share the same intensity of those bands, even surpassing many of them. Because of it's volume and energy, it's quite easy to see why they earn this label. It is easier to think of them more as a very loud and energetic biker type rock band. The album cover pretty much sums up the sound of the band-Rough looking outlaw looking types who don't look like the kind of guys you wanna screw around with.
Ace of Spades is a very good intro to the newcomer. Some disagree with me, but I really don't feel there are any filler songs on this album. It is a great starting point, but don't think it's the only great album they did.

BLACK ICE = CLASSIC (BLACK IN BLACKER)Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-04-04
OK, I would like to talk about the middle of the album. Many critics said that this is the weakest part of the ablum. I disagree. Why? Because the critics are always wrong! The middle of the album features, "Wheels" which is a song that has an resemblance of the 1979 classic "HIGHWAY TO HELL".
OK, I don't want to spend literally a day to review this ablum because I have a life. The last things I would like to convey to you are; this album is their best selling album since "BACK IN BLACK". This album sold 6 million copyies by January. This album is AC/DC's 3rd best seller so far. That is proof that this is better then the over rated album "Let There Be Rock." This album could possibly sell more then the ever lasting classic "BACK IN BLACK" which sold 48 million copies. BLACK ICE is a great album! That is my message. This album deserves more respect. As time passes you and other AC/DC fans will acknowledge that this is a huge improvement and that Angus and Malcom haven't ran out of ideas. This had over 50 songs lined up for this album.
Thank you, for your time.

Review Date: 2009-05-19
There are a lot of great songs on this release, but my favorites are 'Rock n Roll Train', 'Anything Goes', 'Smash n Grab' and 'Spoilin for a Fight'. The Young brothers guitar work is strong, and the Angus solos are still as energetic and passionate as ever. The rhythm section with Phil Rudd on drums and Cliff Williams on bass is steady and powerful. And Brian Johnson's vocals are strong and as listenable as they have ever been.
I take away one star for the bands choice to make the new release a "Wal-Mart Exclusive". Bad move, since many people don't shop at Wal-Mart for many reasons, myself included. But when I eventually picked it up off of Amazon, I was very pleasantly surprised with how good it is.
Highly recommended for AC/DC fans.

The songs speak for themselves- I definitely agree with those who think this album is under-rated. Mogg's voice and lyrical ideas were at a peak, and 20/20 hindsight proves Chapman was a more than capable replacement for MS. His tone on this record just KILLS! Carter's keys and horns are a great addition, IMO. Just a really great hard rock record beginning to end.
The 3 live bonus tracks are nice, but those first 8 tracks are a tough act to follow. Mogg's voice is a bit tired, but the recording mix does make for an interesting listen- Carter's guitar is in the left channel, his keyboard in the right and Chapman centered. Having seen this lineup on the Mechanix tour, I was often drawn to Carter as he "juggled" guitars, keyboards and horns all night. It was pretty cool to hear that again on these live tracks.
Bottom line- whether you're a UFO fan or just someone who likes melodic hard rock, this is without a doubt a worthwhile purchase. Oh, and these guys are touring the States this Fall- saw them last summer in Santa Cruz and they still rock!

Singer Ian Astbury's voice is very energetic and has an intense emotion all on it's own -- he wails and screams from song to song. The band's style was rock n roll, but in a slightly electronic new wave style. The album also features the songs:"She Sells Sanctuary" filled with loud rock guitars with an interesting melody and "Fire Woman" and "Sun King" that does have a slight Doors vibe to it. It is a well put together greatest hits collection.
Electric CultReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2008-02-11
Rubin stripped the band down to basics. Gone were the echo-drenched early productions, in were the loud, bare-bones Back in Black howling guitars of Electric. "Love Removal Machine" (along with its star-maker video) steamrollered rock radio. The clashing personalities of Duffy and Astbury also made for great interview fodder, and The Cult exploded worldwide.
They were able to hang onto that musical esthetic for Sonic Temple, their only US Top Ten album. It deserved that status, with the band's most solid set of songs. "Fire Woman" was the attention getter, but there was also the very cool "Edie (Ciao Baby)" about Andy Warhol cohort Edie Sedgwick and "Sun King" both vying for airplay. As solid "Sonic Temple" was, the band was imploding. Astbury was falling prey to substance issues and he and Duffy were no longer creating creative sparks when they collided. Duffy wanted to stay with the hard rock, Astbury was getting into mystical/spiritual goo and the booze/dope crushed his focus. The lackluster Ceremony found The Cult fiddling with too many experiments, and "Wild Hearted Son" was the best thing there.
After that, The Cult found the band down to Astbury and Duffy with a rotating list of guests. Bob Rock from "Sonic Temple" was brought back in an attempt to capture the old sound, but the two best songs were "Sacred Life" (not here) and "Coming Down" (which is). Following albums did little to make the band interesting. You could easily just get "Electric" and "Sonic Temple" to get what really mattered about The Cult, since both "Fire Woman" and "Love Removal Machine" would be covered. This Best Of The Cult shows that, while a great band when they were on fire, they couldn't keep that intensity going very long.
Incidentally, 2007's Born into This is suprisingly lively.

The last essential Metallica release.Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-01-04
Metallica had a reputation (and still kind of do) as one of THE most entertaining, energetic bands to see on tour. What you get in this collection are three CDs and a DVD from their Black Album tour, plus a DVD from their Justice tour. It was originally released as three CDs and three VHS tapes in a big, bulky box. The best parts about this updated version, aside from having DVDs instead of tapes, is the compact packaging and the price; this now goes for half what it used to. And what a bargain it is.
The concert on the CDs is way more definitive than S&M, as this music represents Metallica at the end of their prime. No songs from Load/ReLoad/St. Anger here. Plus, obviously, there's no orchestra. The DVDs tell the same story, especially the Justice one. Man, this is the best Metallica concert on the market. It's amazing just how much energy they had back then. Comparing this Seattle concert to Cunning Stunts signifies just how much this band changed in the 90s. This package is worth it for this DVD alone.
The old box set came with a book commemorating their life on the road, but here it's available as a special feature on one of the DVDs as barely readable stills. I don't care, though. The music is what counts.
This box set marks the end of an era for not just for Metallica, but heavy metal in general. Get it.

There is a reason it is still high priced--IT IS WORTH IT!Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2008-05-11
All the concert footage presented here proves why Metallica became Rock Gods. Although I have not purchased the last few Metallica albums since they changed their style, I still purchased this set and was very pleased. Only problem was with the stencil and booklet, I prefered the larger size stuff that came with the original boxset; however, the concert footage is still legendary.
My favorite is still the Seattle "And Justice For All" show. This set proves why people who went to see Ozzy Osbourne on his "The Ultimate Sin" tour were really there to see opening act Metallica who were suppoting their Master Of Puppets effort. The stage is explosive with pyrotechniques and Metallica literally destroy the entire stage before ending the show. This alone reminded me of seeing Kiss in their heyday. Best of all they play the full version of "Master Of Puppets" and not the shortened version they have been playing the last few years. Another Gem on this video is the live version of "Breadfan." By far better than the version of "Stone Cold Crazy" that is featured on the "San Diego" set.
But even San Diego is worth mentioning.
Starting with the 20 min. Metallimovie This is basically a review of 2 1/2 years in the life of Metallica redone, then the set blows open with Enter Sandman and you are off and running. After this the set seems to slow down and becomes the Metallica we have heard the last few years (then again I did not like the Black album as well as I did the older albums with exception of "Enter Sandman") The real Gem of this show though is seeing Lars Ulrich and James Helfield dualing on Drums. Plus it is 3 1/2 hours of Metallica Live!
The two CD set of Mexico City is good but not great. The solos are overdone and way too long, good thing you can skip them now. I normally bypass this part of the set. But it was fun playing the unmentioned live version of "So What" to my friends before it became a (Censored) radio regular. So why did I give this set a 5 star review? Because all video taped concerts have their problems, but this concert set is still one of the best produced ones available today.
Skip the other Metallica videos and buy this one. It is the only concert you will need. I should know I just purchased my third copy.

"Beautiful Girls" is a great song, along with the exciting "Light up the Sky", and "Dance the Night Away" USED to be a good song until classic rock radio beat it to death. Other than that, I'm not really that impressed with the music on this album, or Van Halen's supposed classic years for that matter. The band comes up WAY short for me.

These days? Forget about it. Van Halen wasn't VH without David Lee Roth. He's back now, and that's great. But Van Halen isn't VH without Michael Anthony, either, and he's AWOL. Anthony has a distinctive voice which absolutely made the backing vocals. He also has a singular and highly accomplished style of bass playing. So it's a no-go now, as in no dollars for new CD's or shows, because it just ain't what it should be, or could be.

Van Halen's sophomore effort proves the band was no one hit wonder 30 years onReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-03-10
The album was produced by Ted Templeman whom helmed the first six albums for the band and this album has all but one track written by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, his drummer brother Alex Van Halen, lead singer David Lee Roth and bass player Michael Anthony. The band had momentum coming into their second album. They had a huge selling debut and opened for Journey on their Infinity tour and Black Sabbath on their last tour with Ozzy Osbourne before his firing in 1979 and upstaging them. Later in 1978, the band recorded its second album. Would it be as good as debut or would it stink, read on and find out (as I did when I first got on cassette tape in March, 1985).
The album kicks off with a rocking version of the 1974 Linda Ronstadt hit "You're No Good" with Michael's wild bass before it gives way into the song with Diamond Dave singing the verses and screaming during the chorus as Eddie and Michael sing the chorus and a superb remake which just burns. The hit "Dance the Night Away" follows and was the song that got most attention from this album and a great song. Next is "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" which was another great track. The rock just continues with "Bottoms Up" and a excellent hard rocker with excellent solos from Eddie (this time with phasers and processors making his guitar sound like an Army playing). The frantic rocker "Outta Love Again" ends the first half on a rockin note.
"Light Up the Sky" is a powerful rocker that starts the second half with a bang and the song is noted for its small Alex Van Halen drum solo section. The instrumental "Spanish Fly" follows and showcases Eddie's talents on classical guitar. "D.O.A." (which stands for Dead Or Alive for those curious) is next and one awesome hard rocker and the ending is to be heard to believe. "Women in Love" follows starts sounding to be a ballad in its guitar intro before rocking out. The closing rock radio stapler "Beautiful Girls" is a great song and a great way to close the album.
Van Halen II was to be the band's first US Top 10 album and second million seller. It also proved that Van Halen were in it for the LONG HAUL!
Highly recommended!

Just got into an argument this weekend about clipping in commercial releases, so i had to give this cd another listen. I hadn't listened to it since it first came out and it bothered me so much that i probably listened to it 10 times or less. I love System and listened to all of their other albums obsessively, but I could not get into Hypnotize (and not because of the music itself). Anyway, this cd was just as bad as I remembered it.
It was a struggle to choose 1 or 2 stars, but i had to go with 1 since i i feel that even if the music is worth more than 1 star, the point is moot since you cannot listen to it. No one should pay money for this, since that will just encourage the industry's race to the bottom.
Now i'm afraid to buy any newly remastered albums because it takes too much research to find out if it's a legit remaster or (more likely) some hack job where the original album was just compressed and volume boosted.
Since Mezmerize and Hypnotize are like a double album, this is really making me question how i didn't have this strong of a reaction to Mezmerize. Now that i am more sensitive to these things though, i think that if i go back and listen to Mezmerize again, it might ruin the album for me. I will just have to let my time enjoying that album be a pleasant memory and never listen to it again.
Isn't anyone embarrassed?
