"Boring" was the word I used to describe DT music... How wrong was my judgment! A workmate owned all the discography and lend me some albums to hear. At first it was difficult to understand all the tempo changes, weird arrangements, the progressive cheese, and the voice of LaBrie (I'm a death metal guy) I didn't hear the albums in order so I hear'em all in a ramdom way... at the end I doscovered a band full of super talented musicians, with great skills in compsition and a corny-less sense of melody. "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence", "Awake", and "A change of seasons" has become new favorites on my album collection.
This EP is a true demostration of instrumental virtuosity. best think in the album is the covers treatment. They kept the feel of the original songs with a nice DT flavor on it.
If you, are reticent to give this band a chance... grab a copy of this CD and convince yourself.

This album is worth it just for the title track alone, as it's all I listen to. The other cover songs are okay, but Change of Seasons (all 26 minutes of it) really shows off the band's talents. And though many versions of this song have been released (live variations), this version is still my favorite!
This is where we get our first taste of Derek Sharidian thumping his fingers on the keys, and a great job he did too!

Occasionally some guitar tricks will catch my attention, but the vocal melodies leave me scratching my head and asking "What's so great about this?" I *really* want to know if people who are fans of Dream Theater ever seriously listened to artists like King Crimson, Yes, and early Genesis. Because THOSE are genius bands capable of memorable songwriting skills.
Track one on this album, which is 20 minutes long, is pretty boring. Some nice guitar tricks aside, and everything else is rather ordinary, and features a lead singer who can't sing a melody (or doesn't want to sing a melody, whatever).
It's not really a chore sitting through an epic Dream Theater track, because at least the band is trying to write good music, and the band members probably mean well. Just make sure you check out 70's progressive rock before deciding whether this is deserving of classic music or not.

Don't just 'listen' to it. Put on some headphones. Get the lyrics down in front of you. Read the lyrics when the vocals are sung, and close your eyes in between.
Hopefully you'll agree that it's one of the greatest tracks ever -- a mirror of a passage through a man's life, and through the change of seasons that come in everyone's life.
A masterpiece of sound and emotion.

There are highlights and some amateurish low-lights on this album. I own the original vinyl release and have not listened to any remasters or mixes on CD.
This album sounds like a quality basement recording of a band who've written some songs on the early 80's LA metal scene, with potential.
The songs are very consistent, all are of similar quality and aren't nearly as dark or sinister in nature as their next release, "Shout At The Devil," (when they hit it big on MTV and the charts).
Motley Crue are a result of post-punk LA metal where image, attitude, stage presence and the ability to write good, catchy songs were the key to success, mastering your instrument and writing deep lyrics were not required.
The sound of TFFL is a bit more bubble gum and stripped down than anything else in their long career, making it a novelty and more of an indulgence if you grew up listening to early Motley Crue.
If I had to pick favorites it would be "Piece Of Your Action, "Starry Eyes," the title track, and "Merry Go Round."
It's a bit silly and funny at times, not purposely, but again it should be something you know if you're a fan of the Crue in any sense. Personally I quit listening to them, outside of what Iwas bombarded with daily on the radio, after "Theater Of Pain." So, take my words with a grain of salt.

PUMP: The Definitive Aerosmith Masterpiece of the 1980's!Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-02-14
PUMP is the second peak of the band's career (after their commercial plunge in the early 1980's due to declining record sales and inner group turmoil) It builds upon their catchy music that brought new fans who enjoyed 1987's Permanent Vacation, and ties the classy new co-writing team of Desmond Child and Jim Vallance who helped out on several tracks on PUMP to Perry and Tyler's hard-cutting edge and sleazy, slick lyrics that earned Aerosmith immense popularity on their 1970's albums.
Most of the tracks here are so well constructed that at a first glance, the casual listener won't really skip any tracks on the first go. There have been several radio singles to have come from this album, the slick "Love in an Elevator", the catchy "Janie's Got a Gun" (Nominated for a Grammy), the rocker "The Other Side", and my personal favorite, the closing ballad, "What It Takes".
"Young Lust" opens as a hard hitting fast-paced rocker that will pretty much define the superiority of the record on its own. My favorite part is at the conclusion where Kramer goes on a 30-Second drumming spree that leads into the secondary rocker "F.I.N.E.". The Fun doesn't end there. If you're not at least grinning by now, then this isn't your record. "Monkey On My Back" is a bouncy number that feels ahead of its time. (It also has been featured in several car commercials). "My Girl", and "Don't Get Mad, Get Even" are both excellent tracks. "Voodoo Medicine Man" happens to be one of the most unique and interesting tracks on the CD but will definetly grow on any Aerosmith listener.
Another interesting thing to note is that there are often bookmark songs and skits on this CD that separate songs, for added touches. These are definetly unique to this specific CD. The most impressive of these cuts is "Dulcimer Stomp" which plays immediately before "The Other Side" on Track 6.
I would recommend PUMP as a CD for just about anybody. I have not found many CDs to equal its integrity or to match the impression it has left on me. If there are any fans of Late 1980's hard rock (G'N'R Fans would certainly enjoy this CD) or even hair fans (should they still exist), or if you come from the 90's and would like to know what a truly amazing 80's rock record is, look no further. I have yet to find another album that can rock like this. Period.

I must say, from what I've heard, this rocks and is more energetic and more rocking than anything from the 70's (Back In The Saddle, on a side note, is weaksauce). For one, just check out those drums! The drumming is quite powerful compared to anything else they did, just awesome, pumping, funky, rock and roll drumming! It reminds me of the punch that made John Bonham a legendary drummer. And Steven Tyler is more sleazy and more wild than he was in the 70's, his voice has definitely changed. There is a wide variety of music styles, ballads, rockers, bluesy songs, and hoedowns! I do enjoy the bits such as the Water Song. There is quite a bit in the variety department, and the album just flows better because of that. Here's an overview of the 10 songs
1.Young Lust-A glorious rock and roll song. It doesn't get any better than this!
2.F.I.N.E.-See Above
3.Love in an Elevator-See Above
4.Monkey On My Back-backed by a deep, rocking groove, Steven Tyler pumps it up and sings about getting rid of a drug addiction. Catchy, classic Aerosmith. Complete with some Whoo-hoo's that put michael jackson to shame.
5.Janie's Got A Gun-An almost great song with a good intro, but one thing that makes me mad is how they changed "He raped a little bitty baby" to "He jacked a little bitty baby". That just makes me mad, because the subject matter is serious, and why water something like it down for commerical purposes?
6.Take Me To the Other Side-Good horns go into a good, but not great poppy rock and roll song. It's one of my least favorites, but it gets the job done and sounds great, with good lyrics.
7.My Girl-One of my favorites, with a funky groove so irrestible. Hate if it was taken off.
8.Don't Get Mad, Get Even-A somewhat uninteresting chorus, but the verses are deep fried country, heck yeah!
9.Hoodoo-Voodoo Medicine Man-I like the bit at the beginning, but it turns into the only poor song on the album.
10.What It Takes-A ballad with any of the awful hair metal syndromes. Great jam at the end, more country.
Well, one thing I do know, Aerosmith wouldn't create something like this after release, instead getting the help of their producers and other people not in the band to make music a lot more (some helped on this, but it's mostly Aerosmith material). Too bad, though Just Push Play is an awesome song. They wouldn't release an album that's consistent near all the way.

something that kind of bugged me a bit in this album was the talking aspects of the songs. like, the most prominent example, in the song the audience is listening, the supposed premise is that an elementary school aged vai is going to play a composition for his class and his teacher is glowing with praise, but as he starts to play she says it's too loud and wild and bad mouths it... throughout the whole song. trying a bit too hard to capture that something else.
i think the deal with this guy is that he was a student of joe satriani, or they had some sort of relationship like that... and i'm sorry to say but he has a ways to go in comparison.
