Although he's described playing the role of Roger as a mere "stepping stone," Adam Pascal made it to the cover of Newsweek thanks to his part in the Rent phenomenon--and the dramatic edge he brought to his doomed character. While he's continued his work in musical theater with the blockbuster Elton John/Tim Rice show Aida, Pascal returns to his roots as a rock singer on Model Prisoner. His debut solo CD--with backing from Saturday Night Live alumni band members--comes out on Internet-based Sh-K-Boom Records, a label interested in bridging the musical theater-pop music gap for a hip young audience. In fact, Pascal's pre-Rent years were spent fronting a band called Mute; the singer's brand of raw energy makes it clear he's spent a lot of time admiring the likes of Axl Rose and Queensryche. No doubt that the rough passion of his delivery goes some way toward compensating for the repeatedly formulaic quality of his tunes (Pascal wrote 10 of the album's 12 songs)--which can range from leftover hair-metal choruses to dirty-blues-framed laments. But what always comes through is the unmistakable intensity of Pascal's voice, and its ability to shift and shade the moods being expressed. Pascal may be at a crossroads, but he's determined not to be held prisoner by the patterns his fame has cut out so far. --Thomas May

Metal K music reivew Awesome debut
As an Adam Pascal fan, I was anxious to hear this, yet nervous that it would be less than perfect... and I was wrong - I really like this cd. The songs are "singable" - Liken A Razor and Rhyme and Reason are my favorites. For a free preview of him playing an accoustic version of it, go to (...)

Metal K music review Good CD!
Very good! I only had the privilege of listening to a few songs, but I love them all! Unfortunately, when I tried to buy it at Borders, they said it wasn't available from anybody. Not even the distributor. So I couldn't get it. But anyway, after hearing Rent and Aida, I really thought of this as a refreshing alternative to my...obsession, if you will, with Broadway stuff.

Metal K music review Adam Pascal: Model Prisioner
As a avid fan of RENT, I had bought the RENT OBC about 5 years ago and basically havent stopped listening to it since. RENT was the best and most orginal show B'Way had seen in decades. And upon listening to this CD I heard this golden voice of raw power and soul. It was Adam Pascal. And as he has been equally brilliant in everything he's done since(Aida, Cabaret).
So when he came out with this CD about 2 years ago, I bought it. I must say, I loved it instantly. Adam has a very distinctive voice. Filled with power, emotion and soul. His voice is ear-shattering....But in a really good way. And on this wonderful music journey he hits shades of 80's hair band rock, Heavy Metal, Pop, Country and infuses it with fresh modern rock for just a very strong CD.

Metal K music review Vibrant!
I can only review this E.P. because Andrew W.K.'s amazing debut c.d. has not been released yet.Well it has on this side of the Atlantic and has been getting a mixture of rave reviews to is this c.d. some sort of bad joke.As an introduction to his music this e.p. is perfect.Take a trip back to the mid 80's when loud heavy rock music was filled with fun, certainly wasn't meant to be taken very seriously and was the perfect way to kickstart all parties. This is the greatest thing about his music for me,as it's such a welcome break from all the doom and self-gratifying gloom of groups like Staind and Creed. At first I was majorly shocked when I heard this music. It sounded like a cross between Billy Idol,Def Leppard and Meat Loaf-talk about bad taste! But it works so well. Each track is laden with enormous guitars, heavy fast furious drumming, mid 80's synths and out front W.K.'s gruff and grunted vocals. Each track seems to grow from one catchy riff to the next,so it's very accessible.Catchy verse, catchy bridge and an even catchier chorus. The lyrics are so good in that they are completely daft and are just on about being positive and having a good time.On his debut c.d. the word party is mentioned in the title of 3 songs. All of his songs are over almost before they've really started which means you're not very likely to get bored with them.Thankfully the one aspect of 80's rock that he has left out are the ever predictable guitar solo's.If I did have one fault with his music it would be that many of the songs sound very similar-there isn't a slushy ballad in sight here, which I suppose is a good thing.I don't know how big this guy is going to be,but I'm really hoping the spirit of this e.p. and even more so from his debut album will give guitar music the kick in the butt it so badly needs!Andrew WK is the freshest, most vibrant new rock act around at the moment.Party On!!!

Metal K music review Quite possibly the best thing ever
After hearing Party Hard on MTV2 and getting it stuck in my head, I decided to get a few mp3s of Andrew WK to see if the rest of his stuff was any good. I was over an hour late in for work the following morning due to me HAVING to go in to town and buy up everything I could find. Nothing has excited me musically like this in years. And of all the songs I have heard so far, the greastest is hidden away in the middle of this EP. Listening to We Want Fun is quite simply the most enjoyment I've had in ages, I just play it on repeat mode, jamming along with my guitar, bouncing around and grinning like a maniac with a bag of happy pills.

Put simply, there is nothing better for sale on this website. Forget your Xboxes, Gamecubes and widescreen projection TVs, and get this disc. Now!

Metal K music review We Want Fun!
Perhaps the biggest 80's-like throwback of the year, I have visions of Slade, Chumbawumba and about 40 soccer hooligans running around on stage while the baby grand is pounded, the drums roar, the guitars and bass play MONSTER riffs...

*WHEW!* Especially the anthem "We Want Fun," you'll want to listen to this thing 100 times without it ever getting old!!!

Metal K music review Great CD
This is one of those few gems where you can listen to the entire thing from start to finish without having to skip dull filler songs. Every song is equal in its catchiness and fun. These are good glam rock songs that seem to be slowly losing popularity. Don't forget your past, people! I was just a kid, but I remember how pick-me-up and danceable these tunes were. They are just as good as I remembered, and even more fun now that I can actually appreciate what they are singing about. It's a great car CD (especially for road trips), excellent work out CD (great for cardio), but it's also good for decent background party music. These songs are those little guilty pleasures that nobody wants to admit they enjoy. Well, indulge yourselves, because this is a worthy investment that will not disappoint you.

Metal K music review A ROCK AND ROLL RIDE TO THE PAST.
This is what rock was all about. Good times and music that filled with you with energy and made your heart beat like a train. The songs on this cd take you back to a time when musis was about having fun and falling in love. Every track rocks and is a great collection for any 80's hard rock fans.

Metal K music review The Joy of Discount Music
When you're digging through the "DISCOUNT MUSIC FIVE BUCKS AND UNDER!!!" bin at the store of your choice, you really don't expect to find much more than generic, re-record cover compilations of old 60's music. Even if by God you DO find something under 20 years old, it's still going to be all covers, re-sung by some no name kids in Nashville. But one day I discovered K-Tel records. My first experience with them was this album. A double album, and not a double album price! Oh my God! It's the original recordings! And in good condition, too. These aren't like the discount "Power Sound 2001" Black Sabbath CDs that are floating about stores nation wide, that obviously were de-mastered from somebody's worn out 8-track. This is a high quality disc!

This is a booty-kickin album. Although I think the order of the songs could have been re-aranged to better suit the listener, it's still excelent. DIO is on there, man! Dio rules! They did an EXCELENT job of picking hard rock hits from all over, rather than just throwing together a "Who's Who in Aquanet Land" album. The cover was distasteful. I keep mine turned inside-out.

Metal K music review One of the best metal compilations available
Judging from the corny cover art, you would think this is another hair band compilation, but Double shot of metal goes beyond the glam rock and offers some all-out rockers to please the true metal fan. Pantera's Walk is a great way to open a CD, and the tracks from Sepultura, Anthrax, Metal Church and Armored Saint all rock hard. What makes this compilation unique is that it includes metal gems from 1972 to 1999. Most metal compilations contain the same played-out radio hits from the 80s, but on this double CD set, you get classics from Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and Motorhead, some thrash ,some glam and some straight ahead metal (like Black Sabbath and Dio). The two tracks from lesser know bands Virgos Merlot and New American shame are surprisingly solid songs and add some new sounds to the collection. Just about every compilation has a few tracks that don't fit, and this one has only one or two (White Lion's "Wait" and Faster Pussycat's "House of Pain). Who's in the mood for White Lion after listening to Sepultura? Never the less, you won't find this many killer metal songs on one collection for the price. The sound quality is great, too.

Metal K music reivew Unimpressive
I saw Umphrey's McGee at the Chicago theatre and have to say I was a little disappointed. I hadn't heard their music before but had heard good reviews. Unfortunately, I can't say I was overly impressed. Here are my impressions - their music is just O.K. and the vocals (what little they have) are horrendous - off key and painful to listen to. During the show I couldn't help but get the impression that Umphrey's was trying to follow in the footsteps of the dead and phish - the music and attitude is undeniably "phishesque". Perhaps Umphrey's is trying to cash in on the void left by their absence, but truth is Umphrey's just isn't at the same level. The extraordinary musical talent found in Phish and the Dead is noticeably missing in Umphrey's. All that is left is a somewhat impressive light show and a theatre saturated with patchouli oil and herb. This is probably why the vast majority of their crowd consisted of high schoolers. Eager to be there for the "experience" and atmosphere, they simply didn't care that the music was sub-par or just didn't know any better.

Metal K music reivew better once youve heard it live
but there are so many tracks that are so much better live. dont get me wrong, i love this cd, but it dosent compare to live versions of most of the songs. all of the songs are great, but when played live, even when they arent jammed on are just better than whats on the cd. for instance, uncle wally on this cds okay but not as good as it is live and when its played electric.

all in all a great album. nothing too fancy and white mans moccosins are still some of my favorite um songs even with all their new stuff out

Metal K music review Keepin in Real
Sexy album. I have seen Umphreys a number of times, and have quite a bit of their music, and this is my go to when I want some Umphreys. I like it better than Anchor Drops (which is also great), because it feels a little more open and free, AD can get dense and heavy at times (which is good, because it doesn't just sound like more of the same).

I like the use of acoustics as lead guitars in Uncle Wally and Water. Andy's Last Beer is a song anyone will like. Ringo, Roulette and Hurt Bird Bath are very very sexy, but my favorite song (which I have yet to hear live) is 2nd Self, mainly because of the last minute of so, which is a nice little guitar jam...BUT IT, LISTEN TO IT!

(and read the liner notes, they're fun)

Metal K music reivew Good Cheese Metal
I got this CD by pulling it out of the throw-away bin at a radio station I was working at. I figured, for free, I'll give it a shot. I can honestly say, it's one of my favorite cheese metal albums. I don't really know anything about his band, their history, or anything else, but they are (or, I think I can safely assume, were) good at what they do/did. If you have the opportunity to pick up this disc, go for it. If you are fan of hair metal, I don't think you'll be disappointed. If you need comparison, they seem to be a long the lines of "Def Leppard crosses Skid Row". Just a humble opinion from someone you don't know.

This cd is a gem. Trust me on this one I bought this cd over 10 years ago in a Dollar Tree of all places. This cd has got good rock guitar licks, well-written songs and a really cool laid back feel to it. This is a good cd to let go at a party, because everyone I turn onto this always has positive comments towards it.

Andrew W.K. has a mission--to dirty up rock & roll, literally and figuratively. And while that may seem a sizeable task for one man to shoulder, consider that the Michigan-reared screamer has devoted the whole of his debut album I Get Wet to ecstatic celebration of the id. It's a heck of an idea, and it's brought W.K. the fawning adoration of the British press who, after enduring years of ambient art-rock inspired by paranoia about technology (you know who we mean), are rushing to embrace W.K.'s credo that everyone should party till they puke. W.K. stays on theme throughout I Get Wet's 12 frenetic tracks--song titles like the aforementioned "Puke," "It's Time to Party," "Party Hard," and "Fun Night" pretty much make the point. But W.K.'s more-is-more approach holds true of the music too--it's cheesy new wave meets spiky metal but delivered with such self-conscious force that it's almost bubblegum. Think of the gargantuan riffs of "Detroit Rock City" smeared with Flock of Seagulls-style synth while some manic propagandist hollers himself hoarse over top. I Get Wet has one setting--loud--but not since the Stooges has unmitigated hedonism, and just plain headbanging, seemed like a plan. Mighty members of the three-finger devil salute fraternity, your soundtrack has arrived. --Kim Hughes

Metal K music reivew Hanz and Franz on wax
Andrew's big debut is a combination of Meat Loaf, GWAR, early Motley Crue, and perhaps the Chemical People all in one disc... In other words "this will pump you up." No, your wife won't like it, your friends who are into Mr. Oberst won't like it, nor will your parents like it. That typically works for me.

Metal K music review Relentless Fun Pure And Simple!
This album is consistently loud, fast and unapologetically darn good fun! 'I Get Wet' is an all time classic as far as I'm concerned and I would not care if everyone else on Earth hated this man and his music- as the lyric to 'Fun Night' goes "We've got just one concern and we're gonna get dumb!" Let go for 35 minutes and enjoy a brainless full on party album!
'It's Time To Party', 'She Is Beautiful' and the title track are the highlights of a record that helped to shed my shyness skin and make me the confident lover of life I am today.
'I Get Wet' is my favourite Saturday night warm up soundtrack!
