Music with Depth
No down side to the CDThis is one of the CD's that never leave my vehicle. The music is superlative and while you are enjoying the music, you are subtly hit with a message. Andy is a man of true talent and genuine faith. If you ever get a chance to see him perform, run...Don't walk to get to the show.
Get this CD!I hate typing in these forums but..., I had to after listening to Andy's music. Brings back lots of memories from the past when we used to hang out with the CREW. Good luck to you Andy and the best wishes. We all have to get back together some time and B/S. Awesome music!

Absolutely perfectStimulator offers a perfect update of 80s sound that doesn't pander to the audience or insert tongue-in-cheek humor to a retro sound. The band is straight-up serious about their debt to new wave, funk, and disco and pays homage to those genres instead of joking about it. It's a good thing I don't have room-mates or they would hate me for how often I play this CD. I really hope Stimulator isn't a one-shot band. I'd love to see a follow-up effort--and soon.
better than a go goI saw them on Friday night opening for the GoGo's. They were way better than the headlining band. They were so good I immediately bought their cd downa the concession and had them all sign it. The Clearwater Ruth Eckerd Hall had absolutely perfect acoustics. The band was awesome. The bassist was even trying out his new martin guitar. For me the song how far would you go has an absolutely infectious bass line. It can be currently heard throughout my neighborhood cranked to the threshold of pain from my living room. Go buy at least 10 copies and send them to all your friends.
Sassy, sexy, sultryFinally a band that is innovative and can stay true to their own image! Stimulator is a breath of fresh air in music...their look, their feel, their sound has been long awaited! From the seductive "My Beautiful Muse" to the retro feel of "Magic" --everything just flows!
I too saw them the first time opening for Duran Duran and was captivated by them. It is now time to see them on the big stage alone!

laid backthis is the first album that i bought by patterson hood. i am a very big fan of the acoustic guitar and this is a perfect example of how its supposed to be done. i also think that he has a great voice.
Rough-hewn vs half-assed, part 2This album brings to mind dusty garages, bologna sandwiches, blown gaskets, dried barf on the floor of some beer joint, sleazy women, drunk deadbeats screaming inappropriate political statements in public, lost money, stale beer, ripped flannel shirts, spit cups, filthy floorboards, women in curlers rooting for Rusty Wallace, that unexpected and reviled first french kiss from some weird bar chick, baked macaroni for breakfast, and back pain. In other words, everything that is essential and fantastic about living in this craphole we're stuck in. In other words, beauty is where you find it, even in the dusty backwash that is this album.
I'm happy he released itFirst of all, I admit that I don't own a single Drive By Truckers CD--something I plan on taking care of. I bought this CD on a whim after listening to clips of "Uncle Disney" and "Rising Son" and being very impressed. When I was able to listen to the complete CD, I immediatly fell in love.
This CD could have easily been cleaned up but, thankfully, it remains beautifully lo-fi and raw. From creaking chairs to string noise to the occasional off-key lyric, KILLERS AND STARS is a brutally honest recording even if you choose to ignore the intelligent songwriting. Hood's voice embodies each song like a backporch storyteller revealing more character with each note.
This is a real folk album done right. I wouldn't change a thing.

A sure thing that I don't doubt (I know that's a reference off Son of Sam I Am. Shut up.)Cut-out bin classic, this one. Further proof that the nature of life is chaos. The nerd never gets the girl and great music ends up remaindered like this third platter from Scarsdale's finest.
I talked about Son of Sam I Am elsewhere and really haven't much to add to what others have said about how great this band is and how great this album is.
Is this a brilliant album? Yes. From "Susquehanah Hat Co." to "Theme Song," there's not a bad one here. Too Much Joy didn't turn out junk. And maybe I'm just the pirate Tim and the boys sing about, who everyone thinks is crazy (everyone is right).
Everyone should sleep with everyone tonight! Whoa-ho-ho!

The pinnacle of TMJThe pinnacle. The epitome. The peak. Shades of what was possible for TMJ were shown on "Son of Sam" and their full color brought about on this, their best album. Enjoy.
The Too Much Joy MasterpieceThe first time I heard this record I thought it was one of the worst things I ever heard. Man how a few listens can reveal so much of an album. That's the mark of a great record. The songs on this record seem to be in some loose cycle of : confusion, rage and resignation. Lots of irony, insecurity and alienation in the lyrics. "Susquehanna Hat Company" (named after an Abbott & Costello routine) is a perfect post-breakup song. "Good Kill" is slightly written from a serial killer's perspective and features some rhyming from KRS-One (oddly enough R.E.M.'s "Radio Song" also featuring KRS-One on Automatic For The People was released the same day as Cereal Killers).
"Pirate", "William Holden Caulfield" and "Goodbye Ohio" are almost textbook examples of the aliention rock song.
"King Of Beers" has frat-house written all over it but somehow rises above standard frat-house fare. "Crush Story" is the quintessential power pop love (or crush as it were) song. "Nothing On My Mind" is a mini-anthemic ode to the joy of nothing. "Gramatan" is a powerful song with slight Andy Partridge-esque lyrical leanings about the capitalization of the American Indian's land and the commonplaceness (yes it's a word) acceptance of it.
"Long Haired Guys From England" is a classic four chord rave-up. "Thanksgiving In Reno" is a sad true story and contains the classic line "I dreamt that I was Evil Knievel".
"Theme Song" (possibily the best theme song a band ever wrote) was once described by Newt Gingrinch as the "entire essence of the Republican campaign" strangely enough.
The band call themselves a "hip Good Humor truck that
all the kids come out to greet".
Loud, funny, sad, poignant, hyper and youthful.
Hearing an album like this today leaves me baffled as to why the same people who consider mid-90's albums like Weezers' Blue Album and Blur's Modern Life Is Rubbish to be classics haven't even heard this album. Unlike say, Nirvana, the rage and angst here is well-articulated, controlled even more alienated. This album is like a candy-coated bitter pill.
It's as sweet at it is sour and as energetic as it is resigned.
There's no reason this album should not go down in
history as one of the classic guitar-based pop punk classics
(and one of the first of it's kind).

Tasty guitar-oriented jazz.F-5 has the following members: Stanley Sheldon (bass), Michael Reese (guitar), Tom Stephenson (keys), Alex Velasquez (drums). To me, best known player is Sheldon who enjoyed mega-succes in the seventies with Peter Frampton's band (plays on Frampton comes alive). Sheldon is also known as bass-player in the now legendary '72-ish band "Energy" (no albums!) which was formed around the late great Tommy Bolin (see: Billy Cobhams's "Spectrum", James Gang, solo-albums and Deep Purple). In 1996 the "Tommy Bolin Archives" (also on the internet) released a tribute CD where Sheldon, Reese and Stephenson played some Bolin classics with other Energy members. This CD keeps up with that tradition and delivers 11 superb, highly crafted tracks where Reese's fluid guitarnotes swirl around Sheldon's excellent bassplaying. The CD is produced by Michael Shrieve (regarded drummer from Sanatana)and will neatly fit into a CD-collection of an ardent guitar-jazz-collector.

One of the best unknown bands aroundThe Homicide EP is great. Unfortunately the band's debut CD, "Stealing Defeat from the Jaws of Victory," is no longer in print. However, the Homicide tracks "Misery" and "Burn" are from that debut record. I just can't say enough about Doom Kounty's originals. The band is pure rock and doesn't aspire to anything else. It's not of that pop punk or hard core punk vain. But the reckless abandon with which Doom Kounty play its rock is pure punk. In an age where rock seems dead, Doom Kounty live on. Get this CD no matter what. It really is a must have. Also, the Tom Petty and Misfits covers are two of the best covers I've ever heard. And, if you live in the LA/Orange County/San Diego area, go see this band live. Doom Kounty's show is just as explosive as its CD.

With two previous releases under their belts, Seattle's Hi Fi Killers (Kevin Lee Oakland and Johnny Horn) are off to a prolific start in their short career. The duo's third release is a bit different from the other two records, Possession and Loaded, which were an amalgam of funk, soul, hip-hop, and dub. As the title implies, Jamaica leaves its imprint on the Killers' newest offering. Oakland and Horn--self-professed reggae junkies--itched to make a reggae record with Jamaican MCs. But there aren't many Jamaican MCs in the Pacific Northwest, so the duo sent a tape of their best dub, reggae, and dancehall loops down to Jamaica, where they hooked up with Clinton Fearon, Blackout, and Scorpion. The result is an authentic, pro-quality record with tuff dancehall rapping and some forward-leaning beats and pieces--the payoff, no doubt, of the duo's adept way with hip-hop, dub, and funk. --Tricia Romano

This is a great band.Squidboy, who hail from Des Moines, Iowa, are one of the best hard rock bands you never heard of. Their first release on the San Francisco-based Allied label is "Kids Talk to Killers" (Amazon.com got the title wrong). This is some of the smartest, hardest rock and roll without the pretentious baggage most bands carry that are on their end of the spectrum. "Carrot Bug" and "Impotent" sound like Soul Asylum on vivarin. With every listen the songs each take on a life of their own and sound catchy, but not cliched. A great band.
Every song on this CD has its charm, but the CD really hits hardest with the track "Blink," a song about how lives can change forever in the blink of an eye.
Easton has a sound of desperation and longing in his voice, as if he has a story to tell, and if he is unable to tell it, he will be consumed by it.
I wholeheartedly recommend this disc to anyone looking for music with a great contemporary folk sound.
