All seventeen tracks are enchanting in their own way, but here are some highlights. "Voces" begins with "Ritual De Amor (Desire)" performed by Ender Thomas. This song is on both CDs, but what a powerhouse! I love it! Next up is "Llama De Amor," a smoldering ballad by Olga Tanon. I don't know what she's singing about but she draws on passion that goes all the way down to her toes! "Y Te Vas" is an incredible vocal version of Yanni's classic "Keys To Imagination," sung by Andy Vargas. Cristian Castro sings "Ni La Fuerza Del Destino," based on "Face in the Photograph," a gentle, beautiful melody and a voice that is perfect for it. "The Rain Must Fall" has been one of my favorite Yanni pieces for a lot of years, and Jose Feliciano makes it his own as "No Ha Dejado De Llover" - a delightful surprise and a great arrangement! Chloe and Ender Thomas are smokin' in "Quedate Conmigo" with voices full of emotion without going over the top. Lucero's voice is like plush velvet, and her take on "Eterno Es Este Amor" is gorgeous. "Volver" is a fun-filled take on "Someday," performed by Willy Chirino, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, and Ender Thomas - sun-soaked energy! "Yanni & Arturo" is a charming duet for piano and muted trumpet. Chloe also has an amazing voice and seems to be able to sing just about any kind of song - especially power ballads. She reins it in a bit on "Que Te Vaya Bien," and lets the expressive beauty of her voice carry the song. Jose Jose closes with "Volver A Creer," based on "Reflections of Passion." Once considered to be the greatest Latin American singer of all time, pneumonia and alcoholism seriously damaged Jose's voice, so his return to the stage to sing this song was especially poignant.
In the years since Yanni's last album, many people were wondering if he was going to record again. Both "Voces" and "Voices" clearly indicate that Yanni is still at the top of his game. If you are concerned about buying both albums, don't worry about it. The duplicated songs (I think there are five) are among the strongest tracks on both CDs, and it's really a pleasure to hear them repeatedly. The DVDs are also completely different from each other, so buying both packages won't be a waste. Highly recommended!
I have both CDs & DVDs but Voces just touched my heart!Reviewer ID:

When I play the other songs on voices my thoughts seems to drift off. For some reason it does not hold my attention or move me like voces does. I did view the DVD and thought there was too much talking not enough music. They should have put the talking in the behind the scenes section at the end of the DVD. I do plan to see Yanni in concert. Both are very good Cds I think it is matter of style. I do like latin music and when I heard the cd it just moved me as soon as I played it I could not get enough of it. Christian Castro - wonderful. Olga Tanon - Great voice, Lucero has a sweet voice. Ender and Chloe I enjoyed. My favorite singer is Nathan Pacheco. He touched my heart! Wow! What a voice! Aturo Sandoval on trumpet is Awesome! The duets on this CD Voces are incredible!
This CD just moved me more than Voices did. Other people are moved more with Voices than Voces so I think it it matter of style. Do as I did if you can. Buy them both and make up your own mind.

All in one word: Fantastic!Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-06-15
She began in 1989, and ever after she became celebrated in Mali as a unique female songwriter who dared to use her songs to challenge conventions of how women are treated in her world.
As with her previous albums all the songs on 'Seya' were written by Sangare.
Now, at 41, she has grown into a majestic mistress of many moods who presides over her musicians with regal confidence and occasional hints of humour.
"Seya" - which means 'Joy" - is her first album in six years. On this album she shows why she is one of the most significant African female musicians alive in this stunning set in which she marries gutsy lyrics about poligamy, underage forced marriages, sensual love, and the role of women in modern African society to her seductively zippy Wassoulou music.
Sangare's bewitching voice dips into irresistible layers of xylophones, percussion, guitar and brass riffs played by a host of fellow Malian greats.
This feisty and formidable lady (standing almost 6 feet tall) continues to push the boundaries with her happy and breezy songs, many of which have an uplifting and sometimes danceable funky groove.
Produced by Nick Gold, the man responsible for Buena Vista Social Club, there's nice detail from key guests like Pee Wee Ellis and Tony Allen.
"Seya" sees Oumou Sangare attain a new level of sophistication, maturity and variety, all underpinned by her trademark funk-driven Wassoulou sound.
Highlights: "Iyo Djeli", "Mogo Kele" and "Koroko".
All in one word: fantastic.

A few of these tunes still aren't set up the way I'd dream about them, but that's okay. Not everything in this world is built for my pleasure. I focus on what I love, and there is plenty for me to love here. This is the Oumou Sangare album for which I've been waiting since Ko Sira. Her singing here is untouchable.
I bought this elsewhere, and early last week I received email confirmation that my order had shipped (!!). I had Seya in my dirty little hands late last week. I don't know the names (or lyrical content) of any of these songs yet. I've only held the digipak once, and that was to take the disc out and put it in the cd player, where it's been spinning 'round and 'round ever since.
I've already shed tears to it when she and the band get into the Bliss Zone. This album has quickly turned into one of my favorites from Mali, my longtime favorite country in Africa for modern music. Music like this... Oumou's voice... how are music, art and love at this level not the antidote to war, terrorism, raping, kiling, greed and brutality the world over? I've been in the toilet (emotionally, not literally) over a health situation for quite a while now. Aside from my usual pain, I've felt nothing but joy since this album arrived.
Oumou is a gift to us all, and I feel this album places her at a new peak in her artistry. This, Segu Blue and Abacabok are 3 of my favorite Malian albums since Red & Green.

Green Day's music is simply amazing. Billie Joe Armstrong has the ultimate punk rock voice, Mike Dirnt is a great bass player, and Tre Cool is a great drummer. This trio is a trio not to ignore, and if you're just getting into Green Day, buy this set.
So how does this set measure up?
Positives

-Why aren't the early Lookout years (1990-1992) featured on this set? The original 'Welcome To Paradise,' 'Green Day,' '2000 Light Years Away' and their great cover of The Who's 'My Generation' are all missing from this set.
Overall, you can't go wrong with this set. Highly recommended for any Green Day fan. ENJOY!!!

Review Date: 2009-03-31
This is the one because it's the right idea at the right time: a bundle of joy for a hurting planet. It's so all-inclusive --- "an original East Coast-West Coast collaboration", a rapper friend of theirs shouts at the start of a song --- that you'll have a hard time locating this music by geographic origin. It was recorded in Paris, London, Dakar, and Senegal. It uses traditional African instruments and state-of-the art electronics. And Amadou and Mariam sing in French and English --- not that the words much matter. Right here.] As it starts, you might think you're hearing a scratchy radio broadcast from the 1930s. Then comes the plinking of a ukulele (or is it?). And then Mariam floats in --- a birdlike soprano that may not break glass, but certainly clutches your heart and your attention. Entering the room, balancing her, a French horn (or is it?). And now...but what's this? Dance-hall drumming. Synthesizer runs of electronic notes, up and down the scale.
This is harmonious, joyous music, totally accessible pop that just happens to be symphonic in its power. Its real genius is its accessibility --- it sounds so simple, so organic, that it's like a song you've always hummed (and danced to) in your private happy moments. The lyrics, for what they're worth, support Amadou and Marian's vision of a beautiful world: "La vie est belle avec toi..... je te fais un gros bisou". But even more, they're just sound. (From the lyric sheet: "La llalallallallallalallaalallaa... sabalabalabala bala bala babla.") And those sounds evoke Motown and Phil Spector as much as they do African tribal chant.
But then, Amadou and Mariam have, from the beginning, pushed beyond the music of their country. In their childhood, Mali radio played all kinds of music --- rock, salsa, whatever. After their apprenticeship, they moved to the Ivory Coast, then to Paris, where they recorded with Cubans, Colombians, Indian drummers and "an African playing American-style harmonica". It was probably inevitable that their breakthrough CD, 'Dimanche a Bamako', would be produced by Manu Chao, the musician and producer who has brilliantly melded the music of the streets with delightfully political reggae.
On 'Welcome to Mali', there are instruments you've heard on African records --- a kora harp, a Malian violin --- but you'll find a bare minimum of the chicken-scratch guitar and Mississippi Delta blues sound that have defined their homeland's music. And you'll hear none of the street sounds, ambulance sirens and happy children that made 'Dimanche a Bamako' such a huge, international hit.
'Welcome to Mali' is European, sleek, elegantly produced. It's fun to listen to, and it's even funny --- a song about the African continent describes it like a woman, and Amadou and his rap partner are quite clear they want to explore every inch of her. And, near the end, there's a wonderful joke: the title song. Anyone else might have led off with it. Here it's more like: This is a tour of the entire world, and today, kids, we're in Mali. Like it?
I haven't yet said what's usually billboarded as the key thing about Amadou and Mariam, because after three decades of making music, how much does it really matter that they are both blind? Long ago, I bet, they learned how to translate the colors and shapes in their heads into sound; like Stevie Wonder, they hear so well there's almost nothing Amadou can't play on a guitar and Mariam can't sing.
Those dark sunglasses? Yes, they serve a purpose. They are also seriously cool, a piece of the superstar uniform. And, no doubt about it, with 'Welcome to Mali', Amadou and Mariam qualify as global superstars.
Excellent!!Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-01-27
Amadou and Mariam are a married blind couple from Mali and "Welcome to Mali" is their fifth studio release. Typically filled with African rhythms, melodic guitars, and performed largely in French and English.
Opening track "Sabali" was produced by Damon Albarn and has a Western feel, swirling synths and electronic effects perfectly setting off the African backdrop. The lovely and rhythmic "Ce n'est past bon" (with nice chiming) and "Magosa" were also produced by Albarn.
Every song is a standout really, but I'll just make mention of a few more tracks to try and describe the feel of this superb CD. The beautiful downbeat "Djuru" features Toumani Diabate playing kora. "Je fe kiffe" features Juan Rozoff and has a Reggae feel, as does "Djama".
"Africa" is quite upbeat and features Somali rapper K'Naan, and amazingly, it turns out very well (with lyrics describing Africa as a beautiful woman). "Unissons nous" features European-based Nigerian guitarist Keziah Jones (his guitar playing has a Hendrix feel) and has an almost live Afrobeat/Jazz sound.
Stupendously beautiful, I highly recommend this to any music lover.
