Africa music review Blues de Kayes
Someday I'm going to have to go to Kayes and hear the music on the streets. If Kar Kar's music is any indication, I'll be in for a good time. I thought I'd heard all the deepest blues till I heard Kar Kar. His guitar playing makes us realize that the people didn't start playing the blues on plantations in the American south, they started back on the savannas of Mali and continue from the streets of Bamako to Paris, and right here in California. By the way, if you ever get a chance to see Kar Kar play take it. I saw him in Berkeley and I'm still wondering how he gets all those notes out of his guitar.

Africa music review Music for happiness
This is such a beautiful album! If you like African music or Delta Blues or just exposure to something new then buy this CD. Every song on Kar Kar is a jewel. I bought this CD because it was recommended based on my love of Habib Koite. I was a little hesitant because of the age of this CD but I bought it anyway. And while I listened for the first time I came back to Amazon and bought all of Traore's CD's. His songs are lyrical and although I do not understand the language of Mali it does not matter. His voice is deep, gravelly and expressive. The music is complex and, at times, intense but still accessible. Being a guitar player myself I recognize the skill of this master.

Traore emotes through his instrument and his voice in ways that make me feel good. That's the bottom line for Traore's music - it makes me feel happy and content. I am never in a negative mood after listening to this CD and I use it and other Traore CD's to lift my mood.

Four stars is usually my highest rating but there is no question here: absolutely 5 stars. Can I get 6?

Africa music review sounds great
KarKar from 1992 finds Traore in great voice in an upbeat recording of excellent production quality. His jazzy, bluesy guitar work is wonderful. The mix of western and Malian is evident. And it's as good as Toure or Boucoum.

Africa music review I love it!
This CD is a must. The music is a good alternative to zoloft or paxil. It is imposible to be depressed listening to it. I first heared in a African Import store in San Diego and immediatly went out and bought it and now I want more. Everybody I've played it for loves it too. I never thought about contemporary african music before...it is great! Play it next time you have company and everyone will think you're very cool.

Africa music review Cool stuff! Great overview to African music
This is positively the best introduction to African music! Contains great hits from masters like Youssou N'Dour, Franco, Kanda Bongo Man, Ali Farke Toure, Baaba Maal... This CD opened up a whole new genre of music for me. Irresistible tunes with an ethnic flavour.

If you like this CD, check out these other great titles on the same (Music Club) label:

Cape Verdean Boy Gé Mendes has made eight albums, but Lagoa is his first introduction to U.S. audiences. His light, dusky vocals are laid over gentle tracks whose simplicity belay the solid grooves they contain. Moving in a Brazilian/acoustic-Africa axis, he displays a very sensual authority over his material, most of which is self-penned. Ballads and light dance beats coalesce together in a totally harmonious environment where the African and Portuguese meet in perfect counterpoint. Like much of the music from Cape Verde, Lagoa is--deliciously--both sunny and sad. Reflection and passion are intertwined under timeless island skies, carried by a warm trade wind whose history hints at the reasons for the cosmopolitan appeal of Lagoa. --Derek Rath

Africa music review My man Boy Ge Mendes...what can I say
I received this CD as a Christmas gift this year from a friend that I've turned him onto Boy Ge Mendes. I love this CD #5 Lagoa and #7 Pampario are my favorite songs. I love this CD just as much as the Noite de Morabeza CD. I love this man's style...What can I say, I'll say it again...I would love to see him in concert.

Africa music review Dreamy, sweet, gentle, GREAT
I am not normally keen on sweet gentle music. But this music is just so sweet, so gentle, and so healing; yet at the same time, so accomplished and rich. I can think of few people who would not enjoy the music of this little-known Cap Verde artist. The guitar moves along with gentle authority, and it is like lying in a river, being healed and carried to new and lovely lands. As a radio DJ, one of the best albums I have ever heard.

Africa music review a Toubaab fan!!
You!
If you really want to make it in record sales, please produce more albums such as le Grand Bal. (Maybe english or french translations in the booklets would be nice). Also please release albums that you make in Senegal for the Senegalese population such as Baa Taay, which you cannot find on the internet. I had to buy it at one of your concert. Those are truly superior. You are cheating your public. Stop the watered down crap. And please Pascal Obispo duets... ... never again... ... at least leave the music arrangements alone and let him sing and play YOUR music not HIS.

Africa music review Seminal Live Mbalax album
This essential recording captures Youssou & Etoile De Dakar in top form, performing unadalterated mbalax (not watered-down for Western sensibilies). Among Youssou's best 3 albums (along with Best of 80's& Rough Guide to Youssou N'Dour & Etoile De Dakar). Thrilling sabar, bubbling tama, wonderful vocal interludes by lead sabar drummer M'baye Dieye Faye, sparkling solos by guitarist Jimi Mbaye!
Very exciting, complex, polyrhythmic, propulsive, infectious- what great Afropop is all about! Solid live acoustics, nice balance, pleasing sound, strong song selections. Dance you will! Look for VHS recordings of this "Gran Bal" tour as well (imports)! Also recommended- Thione Seck & Raam Daan's "Live Aniversary"

The African Jazz pioneers are to South African Jazz what the Skatalites are to Jamaican ska--not so much a revival of a popular style, but a joyous continuation of one. These guys are the originals and as this live recording attests, they are as energetic, innovative, and swinging as ever. They bring to life old classics like "Skokiaan," a South African tune made into an American hit by Louis Armstrong in the mid-1950s. They breathe fire into Hugh Masekela's "Dark City" and Zacks Nkosis's "Hellfire," and they include plenty of jumping new compositions as well. A standout is the tune Kofifi which is dedicated to the memory of Sophiatown, the township that was the birthplace to much of South Africa's Jazz and modern cultural history. The town was torn down during the Apartheid era, but as is apparent from this release, the music refused to die. This CD features excellent ensemble playing throughout, plenty of great solos, terrific horn and sax arrangements, and outstanding guitar work. This impeccable recording puts you in the audience to experience the excitement of the African Jazz Pioneers, Live! --Jeff Grubb

Africa music review Great CD!

The 1998 edition of Babatunde Olatunji's "Drums of Passion" series focuses on themes of "love." He mixes the traditional drums of west Africa with an easygoing blend of highlife, pop and jazz. Don't expect any lyrical revelations though, with words as philosophical as any thing you've heard from The Spice Girls or The Beach Boys. But that is probably not the point here, as the album rolls through its lightweight themes with a luscious tropi-pop attitude. This is certainly not one for fans of rootsy African drumming, but if you like highlife and Afro-pop with a romantic twist, Love Drum Talk will speak to you. --Louis Gibson

Africa music review good god almighty!!!
It's bluesy, sexy-earthy all about love at the heart of a drum. If i could i would dance to this all day long, for go clean clothes, food and clean bathrooms and live on air and drum.

Africa music review A Cure for Road Rage
After renewing Love Drum Talk from the library four times in three months, I broke down and ordered it today. Two songs -- Spell Monisola and Long Distance Lover -- sustained me on a five-hour car trip and put me into a dance-trance. The four-year-old grandchild was singing along in her car seat. Our gluteal muscles, lungs, and vocal cords got a terrific workout. While stopped in traffic, I mastered several drumming patterns on the steering wheel. Fortunately it was snowing and we had to keep going, or I would have pulled the car over and danced on the highway. Babatunde Olatunji contributes to the possibility for joy in life, and brother, do we need him.

Africa music review Stunning in both performance and recorded quality!
This is just a really fun recording! The first time through, be mindful of the volume knob on your stereo. Some of the drum beats might shoot you clean out of the house! What I mean is, it's dynamic as can be, with a very real sense of the performance taking place right in your room. I guess my review is just as much about the musical presence that Babatundi visits upon us as the care and effort with which Chesky Records used in the recording of this great musician.
I can't help but feel uplifted when I play this CD!

Africa music review ANother Great Album from Brenda
It is unfortunate that Brenda Left the world young, because we have no idea what she might have contributed... But her contributions in her short career were many and this album is an excellent example.
Brenda's rhythms and beats really capture the spirit of Urban Africa. It's highly dancable and energizing to listen to. For anyone who has spent time in Africa, the music pulls at the heart and creates an inexplicable nostalgia for the place.
This album contains many nice rhythms and also the adaptation of a traditional chant in honor of Madela. It's a great introduction to African music that is being listened to by today's modern African people.

Africa music review Off the hook
this album is just too good;Unbelievable beats. She does an excellent job of mixing african style with the more contemporary club hits. It's off the hook. My heart was just racing from nostalgia listening to this album. good buy.

Africa music review Victoria Kings are fantastic!!
This is on my all time top ten cd list, in a collection of around a thousand cds. I've had it for nearly ten years, and it's held up remarkably well. The Victoria Kings are (or were, at any rate) extraordinary musicians who collaborate beautifully, and are clearly having fun making music. While they are similar to a number of other East African bands, to my ear the closest sound to them is Zaiko Langa Langa--they are guitar-driven, and have dispensed with the horn section. Not a bad cut on the cd;in fact, none are merely good--they're all outstanding!

Africa music review kings of benga
I've listened to different kinds of benga before and I can say that nothing has ever come close to Kings's way of benga .It is so soothing one can listen to it the whole day and don't get bored.I wish you could get more CDs by The Mighty Kings of Benga: Victoria Kings. When you do, please e-mail me right away.

Africa music review Great music from the heart of Africa.
This pulsating style brings out the best in African music. Benga music is melodic, sweet to listen to and relaxes the listener. This is the type of music you cannot do without.
