Africa music review DETAILS!
This CD is real big on balafone themes (sounds like marimba, but less vibrato). Which makes it go great with drumming. It makes your feet shuffle and your pelvis twitch, I don't care how old you are or what color you are or if anybody is watching you. Marvelous singing (which I usually don't like) and very creative, highly ornamented compositions.

I like their other CD "Faso Denou" even better, but for entirely different reasons. Like the other reviewer, I don't appreciate the John Hassle CD that uses Farafina as background. The only way I can stomach the "Flash of Spirit" CD is by listening to "Bolomakote" immediately preceding. Then it's kind of interesting.

Africa music review Unmatched percussion artists.
For percussion lovers, this album should not be missed. I am a longtime fan of African and African-Diaspora music, and this is one group I never grow tired of, no matter how often I listen. Farafina has an energy which exalts and inspires; it is joyful in the extreme. Their other CDs are wonderful too. The one with John Hassell is quite different, and I don't like it as well. I have every cd they have made or appeared on. They have my highest recommendation!

The rise of Afro-beat has made music fans more aware of the great music that came out of West Africa in the '70s. But while Fela Kuti's amazing Afro-beat creations were groundbreaking stuff, many musicians were content to stick closer to funk and soul music. This 10-track compilation is straight from the James Brown school of funk, although various groups also pull in elements of African music, calypso, disco, Latin, and boogaloo. Compiled by the promising new Afrodisiac label, which is at the center of L.A.'s Afro-funk scene, Booniay!! A Compilation of West African Funk features some great music. People probably won't recognize names like Bright Engelberts, Matata, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, and Atomic Bomb Zigoto, but they're all essential contributors to this treasure trove of topnotch, rare grooves that will make a welcome addition to any funketeer's collection. The pot is sweetened by the fact that this album has a warm analog sound that's been lovingly cleaned up. --Tad Hendrickson

Africa music review Funk from our Moma
Man this album is the best. I found old out of print albums years ago at a library and have been looking for compilations ever since. This is not the same album set I found, but it opened me up to even more funk from the Motherland. This album is so funky you'd have to air out your house. Get it out of curiousity. Get it for pure afrofunk pleasure. For DJs- this is sample supreme.

Africa music review Booniay!!! is a killer
I cannot stop playing this Booniay!! compilation. What a killer group of Afro-beat bliss. That song Body and Soul...I first heard it at a dance club and wasn't sure if it was Fela or Funkadelic or maybe even some Sun Ra shimmy. The whole album is soaked with soul-izing, ass shaking wonderment.

This 1988 recording is classic stuff, recorded just as soukous was peaking as the high-tech dance music of the moment. The bass is fat, the guitars shimmer, and the ensemble vocals are sweet and alluring. Guitarist Alain Makeba defines the space the music dwells in, with both leads and fills that are perfect. His melodic sense is simple, almost sparse, with never a wasted note. Today the cheap synthesizers sound almost quaint, but they don't mar the production because the group is just so solid. This is a lean, young band we are hearing here, competing with the big boys like Viva la Musica and a host of Zaiko Langa Langas, cutting the tight, clean edge that their elders were rapidly forgetting as better technology made for too easy a time in the studio. Wenge Musica were the new kids in town, and they had no choice but to play it close to the bone, and it worked! --Louis Gibson

Africa music review Excellent
I can not even begin to say how much this guys, music touches me but back to the Album it was one ,he once again showed his magical singing gift using the daily problems, culture, you name it that we face day to day in our Homeland Zimbabwe. Thumbs up for you Tuku.

Africa music review Excellent!! Another Tuku Masterpiece
I bought this record while in Zimbabwe. I heard the first track at a small clothing store in Bulawayo and I got hooked. Although all the tracks on the record are like all of Tuku's music, lively, full of talented rhythmic guitar playing and intricate melodies, the one that stands out the most is the beautiful and delightful "Raki" That song alone is worth the price of the record.

I highly recommend this album and any other by Oliver Mtukudzi.

Africa music review A monster musician who builds his own instruments
Rufino Almeida (a.k.a. Bau)'s all-instrumental CAPE VERDEAN MELANCHOLY presents a monster musician who builds his own instruments, has mastered several styles of music from swing and jazz fusion to morna (the melancholic music of the Cape Verte islands of Africa), and who plays guitar, violin and cavaquinho (known in Hawaii as the ukulele) with equal skill.

Africa music review relaxing energizing blend
This CD is a superb blend of jazz, classical Portuguese guitar, African syncopation rhythims-by all means lsiten and enjoy! Song #6 "Toy" is my favorite.

Africa music review Wonderful wonderful music
Bau's greatest hits is recommended for anyone interested in instrumental music, whether it be jazz or anything else. The songs aren't jazz, since the song structures are fairly tight. The songs are always interesting, sometimes haunting, sometimes happy, and I usually feel better after listening to them. Bau makes the guitars and violins he plays, but I like the way he sometimes distorts the violin sound.

Chaminuka: The Music of Zimbabwe
Released in Audio CD by Music of the World (29 October, 1996)
Amazon base price: $
List price: $14.98 (that's NaN% off!)
Artist: Dumisani Maraire

  • Mwanawe Ndoerera
The Shona culture of Zimbabwe has vital traditions and a vibrant contemporary music scene. Dr. Dumisani Maraire has been teaching Americans and Zimbabweans about them for over 20 years, both academically and on stage. Dumi is a master of the mbira (thumb piano), whose rolling circular rhythms are heard on a number of tracks on this CD. His mature voice provides marvelous deep flowing counterpoint to the plucked metal keys of the mbira. Dumi is known for his establishment of marimba groups, and you'll find some wonderful marimba works here featuring his group Minanzi III. Outstanding songs on Chaminuka include the irresistible, life-affirming, marimba piece "Buka Njari," the lyrics of which advise fighting the self-destructive animal which resides within each of us; and the mbira song "Mwanangu Kura Uridze Mbira" ("I Want My Child to Grow Up to Play Mbira"), which stresses the importance of passing on cultural traditions to the next generation. --Jeff Grubb

Africa music review Not an Introductory Album -- Work Your Way up to This One.
This is (mostly) a solo album by the Master himself. It is pure, undistilled, classical mbira. If you are already familiar with the form, the cadences, the intervals of mbira music, and the rather odd way the vocals interact with the instrument, then you can stop searching right now -- you've found the Holy Grail (or you will have, when you track down a copy!)

If, on the other hand, your ears are steeped in music of the Western tradition, then you'll probably find this a little dry and odd. What your ears will need is just a little education. Of music that is in print and readily available, I would recommend Thomas Mapfumo's "Live at El Rey," recorded when his band was fronted by two mbira players. The rest of the band is really an African rock 'n roll lineup, so it's a very different style than classical mbira (and some of the most danceable music ever created!), but it's a nice introduction to the style of the mbira.

Once you're hooked, try to track down one or two of Dumi's marimba ensemble albums. They are criminally ALL out of print, and very rare, but worth any amount of effort to find. The most instantly-accessible album is "Dumi - The Maraire Marimba Ensemble" which was actually recorded in Seattle, with the ensemble composed mostly of Americans! I dare you to try standing still while it is playing.

From there, the next step up is "African Story-Songs," published in 1969 by the University of Washington Press. It is composed of 8 story-songs, told in English by Dumi as he plays.

Next is "Shona Spirit" - a Dumi CD that IS still in print. He plays duets with Ephat Mujuru -- another mbira master.

Finally, there is this never-to-be-repeated album (Dumi sadly died on Thanksgiving, 1999), which by then you will be able to appreciate for the shining gem that it is.

Africa music review Love it
This is true, traditional African music that will help reawaken your black soul. Brothers, stop being mislead and buying white commercial, business stuff, and get the stuff that is in harmony with your inner being!

Africa music review If you're not dancing, you're dead
Hurray! It's back in print! Just possibly the most danceable album ever. ("Dancing" as in: "bopping your brains out in no discernable pattern.")

No sign of a dud anywhere, or even just a pleasant one that'll let you get your breath back -- all six tracks are incandescent. Your only hope for getting a rest is "Nyama Yekugocha," but you might just find your feet doubling the beat for you.

If you're already familiar with Thomas "The Lion of Zimbabwe" Mapfumo's work, it should be sufficient to know that this is, out and out, his best album. If you're not very familiar with his music, then you've come to the right place, have you ever.

In Western music circles, "Fusion" has rightly become a dirty word. Buy this album and listen to FUSION at work. You might soon be shouting: "Gimme an F! Gimme a U! ..." The fusion going on is between the mbira (central to the quiet, delicate, classical music of Zimbabwe), and an out-and-out Southern African rock band, complete with a female chorus that seamlessly switches between call-and-response and complementary backup. Oh yes, and a horn section thrown in for good measure.

And it works perfectly. The guitars sound like mbira, Mapfumo's voice is a mbira singer's on a caffeine rush, the chorus sounds like Bob Marley's, and the rhythm section just out and out rocks.
------------------------------
P.S.: I've never had much interest in finding out what the Shona-language lyrics are actually saying. On the two occasions I've looked them up, I found the titles meant "The Bream-Fish" and "I Already Have a Husband." However, when I did a search for this album name just now, I also hit on a book titled: "The Rise of Settler Power in Southern Rhodesia", by a James Chamunorwa -- bears some research.

Africa music review Now rare classic
I was extremely fortunate to find a used copy of this now out-of-print classic from 1990. Mapfumo here is in his prime, and the band features a single prominent mbira that gives the music a hard rough and rugged feel, particularly on the title track and Hwahwa, which has since achieved classic status. The traditional beat down song Nyama Yekugocha is an added bonus. Check out Ephraim Karimaura's mbira stle guitar-work over the Afro-poppish rhythm of Murambadoro. The only downer is the album's length, but this is collection material.

Zawose can perform magic with his voice. He and his son--armed only with voices, thumb pianos, a Tanzanian violin, and ankle bells--create a landscape that takes you far away from the wherever you reside. So you don't understand a word? Who cares? The meaning and joy seep into your mind. This is music for the love of making music--something we seem to have largely forgotten in the rush of industry, biz, and hype. This is simply beauty on a stick. And it doesn't hurt that Zawose has one of the world's most mesmerizing voices. It grabs you and won't let go, like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and perhaps one or two others. So listen to this, and then try to claim there's no magic in the world anymore. --Chris Nickson

    Africa music review superfunkadelic
I heard this CD on a sultry night in Cambodia and haven't been able to get it out of my head since. Not a single "filler" in the mix. Much much better than any of those better known MOS or Buddha Bar mixes!

    Africa music review massive afro-rhythms
This cd is so massive it is almost scary. Imagine a thunderous herd of 1000 African elephants charging and you might get an idea of how huge the sound on this cd really is! Not much more can be said about the utter funk present within an innocent enough cd. Buy the vinyl, just because that is the righteous thing to do. This should be in every music collection, especially for funk freakes and rhythm junkies.
