Africa music review Look Forward to Hearing This
I couldn't wait to get the CD. I listen to this CD almost everyday. The guitar, synthesizers, and the drums make this a good CD to listen and dance to. Although I don't speak the language that is used to perform these songs the interpretations of each song gives a bright picture of the Kenyan people in their music.

Africa music review The Nairobi Beat: Kenyan Pop Music Today
This is African music at its best, full of vivacity, melody, enthusiasm and most important of all, a mesmerizing beat. The guitar riffs, the signature of African pop music, alone are well worth the money These songs depict the rich tableau of Kenyan life and relationships in a warm and colorful way. Nicely done.

Africa music review mwana wa ndigwa
ienjoyed this cd so much because it amixture of 3 different dialects spoken in Kenya and basically with the same theme. Iam a Kikuyu so my favourites were (mwana wa ndigwa and Ururu mwana) The rhythm and beat is great. It reminds me of old good days back home. i would recomend it to anyone. my next order is Maitu Maitu cant wait to play it. The Luos, the Wakambas great job.

Nostalgie

  • Descendents Of A Warrior
  • Everything
  • Att (Amadou Tourmani Toure)
  • Ta'aba (Radio Mix)
At the core of this group is Malian singer Tom Diakite. He sings in the Peul and Bambara languages of the Wassoulou region, his voice rising from quiet tenderness to vigorous urgency over the funky bass tones of his ngoni hunters harp and the cascading elegance of his kora. From London comes guitarist Sam Mills, tastefully supporting Diakite with his subtle playing. Filling out the trio's sound are the able hands of percussionist Djanuno Dabo from Guinea-Bissau. Together they play music that is both gentle and passionate. Notable session players that add to the rich, understated sound of this release include flutist Aly Wague, organist Cheick Tidiane Seck, and vocalist Djanka Diabate. Two versions of the standout track "Ta'aba" are included; it is heartfelt and sorrowful, dealing with the sadness and inevitability of departing. "Idjo" is a powerful tune that explores what separates and joins society: "My truth, your truth, and the Truth itself." The song "Tama" ("To Walk") epitomizes what this group is all about, acknowledging ties to home and culture, as they join together on the journey to new possibilities. --Jeff Grubb

Africa music review Tama's Nostalgie soul stirring and pleasing sounds from Mali
I fell in love with Tama's music at this summer's WOMAD USA festival, catching all three of their performances during the three day event in Seattle. A favorite of many festival goers, they had their audiences dancing with delight at the melodic beauty and soulful sincerity of their sound. Their release Nostalgie does not disappoint, but captures the essence of their live performance. Anyone who appreciates World Music in general and Malian music from artists such Ali Farka Toure will enjoy this recording.

Africa music review hand in hand with sarala
this cd came out for me few months after i got the cd Sarala by Jones & Tidiane-Seck. right away the similarities were so obvious. this cd adds to the first one more flavor and keeps the dialogue open. compositions are mixture of ancient and modern ways to express the past and offer an underlining message of love, peace and unity. music is calming and energetic. only criticism i have is duration of the songs, they should've been kept more spontanious and in their aged length, but oh well, maybe next time.

Africa music review JohnnyReviews [Starred-Review]
>Nowhere In Africa was a breath-taking movie with music that can take you away. This is definately a must-see film. UNBELIVABLE! Now let's get down to the music here, since the product is the soundtack that is being sold here. They have this one voice that sings a song that they play multiple times during the movie. It is made to sound like a child. It goes...

Eee-OOO Ah.
Eee-OOO Ah.
Eee-OOO Aaaaahhhhh.

The sound is just so beautiful. This is the kind of music that is so soothing it could put you right to sleep. But the music is strong and has a message hear of what this family had to go through to survive and what they had lost when their families died when they refused to leave their Nazi Death Chamber. Sad but a must see (and listen)!

Africa music review "Magnificent score reflects the country ~ Niki Reiser"
Best Foreign Language Film winner of 2002 from the Academy Award people and nominated by the Golden Globe is "Nowhere in Africa", from director Caroline Link ~ is captivating to say the least. From Nazi Germany one family escapes in 1938 to a new beginning in Kenya ~ from the autobiographical book by Stefanie Zweig is truly an amazing story ~ but wait it only gets better with an award winning score by Niki Reiser, the Swiss Composer who leads the Baset Symphony Orchestra inclusive of sweeping strings and native chants. Very short (less than a minute) tracks of a child singing with harp accompaniment is haunting.

Highlights ~ "NOWHERE IN AFRICA", rhythmic percussion interwoven with the string section, wind instruments join the pulse sating journey ~ "LOVE SCENE", piano solo as strings close in with solace and meditation ~ "JOURNEY THROUGH KENYA", opening sounds of a hoe-down and chants blend within each passage and counter drum beats within the percussion section.

Hats off to Higher Octave Music for sharing this wonderful soundtrack with all the "film-score-buffs" who look forward to unique and global world scores ~ this album will sit on my top shelf for continual enjoyment in the next days and weeks forthcoming.

Africa music review One of the best ever
Agreed. I would give it 6 stars; one of the best soukous albums ever with the 3 great guitarists: Diblo Dibala, Dally Kimoko, and Syran M'Benzra. A great example of Diblo and Dally shining in the studio on other people's records.

Africa music review Pablo Lubadika / Okominiokolo
If there were a higher rating offered I would have given it. At times soft and provocative of visions of Africa, this is quite wonderful music. Energetic and uplifting. Always fun and joyous, Pablo Lubadika's music is pure free African Spirit. I only wish we could have more.

Africa music review Pablo and Friends
I first heard Pablo playing rhythm guitar on a Sam Mangwana track in the early 80's, and later tweaking the bass with Les Quatre Etoiles. Here he gets to do abit of everything, with the support of a few reliable musician colleagues, namely guitarists Diblo Dibala, Daly Kimoko, Syran M'Benza and Lokassa, and vocalists Wuta Mayi, Shimita, and Lea Lignanzi. The result is a fast paced rendering of Pablo's compositions, Paris-style.

Check out UP TO DANCE (track 4) for modern Soukous Stars pace featuring Daly, or try PENSE A MOI (track 7) for a more retro Afric ambiance with Syran.

Africa music review a really, really interesting disk
Ghana's Nana Danso Abiam has set about on an interesting cultural project: create African "classical" music. What is involved: well, for starters, establishing standardized tunings for folk instruments, establishing a large ensemble (approximately 30 members),and then creating an orchestrated repertoire, based largely on folk tunes, the last a standard strategy of Western composers (Dvorak's "Slavonic Dances" et al.).

The result: striking music that lies somewhere between traditional Ghanaian folk music and Western classical music. Do not be mislead: this is not "worldbeat" and this music will undoubtedly not appeal to everyone. Taken on its own terms, though, it is quite appealing.

Africa music review Wow ! ! !
Franco and the OK Jazz are an institution in Central African popular dance music. Between the 1960s and 1990s they had hit after hit (reportedly they recorded over 100 albums!). They performed in concerts and clubs all over the world. I was fortunate to see them in 1990, in the Vis-a-Vis club in the Matonge nightclub district in Kinshasa (in Zaire/Congo, home to the OK Jazz); to keep it short: that night is one of the most memorable musical experiences of my life (though by that time lead singer Franco had died and the band broke up a few years later).

Many OK Jazz (sometimes called the TPOK Jazz) albums are available on CD, and every "world music" enthusiast should have at least a half dozen. What makes this CD special is its early vintage. These tracks were recorded in the late 1950s and are an extremely interesting foreshadowing of what was to come. It's fascinating to hear African pop music develop before your ears, as the OK Jazz mix African and Latin American rythms and styles. (All the more interesting because Latin American music is itself partly derived from African sources. Latin American records, brough by Europeans and Americans, were very popular in Africa in the middle decades of the 20th century.)

I was amazed to find that this music is available on CD. These are important recordings, documenting a seminal period in the development of modern African popular music. If you want to learn the story of modern African popular music, this is a great place to start.

(One other CD of Congolese popular music of this era is "Ngoma: the early years, 1948-1960", which features recordings of various musicians made for the Ngoma record company of "Leopoldville, Belgian Congo".)

Africa music review You enter OK. You leave KO (Knocked Out)
This album covers some of the original recordings of Franco and OK Jazz 1956-57. The selections have been re-mastered from the old 78 records and really sound good considering (no crackles or hums). For anyone interested in the history of African Rumba music or the modern Congolese Soukous, this is a must have CD. Franco's guitar playing on this album hints at what will become the standard sound for the African Rumba and Soukous. On Entre OK, On sort KO, (You enter OK and leave Knocked Out) is the groups signature song. I especially like the songs Merenque and Ah Bolingo Pasi. These cuts are all very upbeat and make a great backdrop for just about any kind of activity. Nice music to cook by :).

I wish more of Franco's CDs would be re-released in the USA. I'm having a hard time finding any at all. :/

The album has some of the best works of the Boys. Sadly most of them have all MOVED ON to the other life but I still find their music very captivating. Kutambura reminds one of the ROUGH times we all through in life. A brilliant album !!!!

This is upbeat music, with African and Reggae flavors. Hear the best of the Mahotella Queens harmonies and Mahatlani's lead vocals ever recorded. If you only buy one album that features either of these artists, this is it. It is a must have for any world music collector.

    Africa music review Cool stuff
A swell collection of rare Guinean pop from the old Syliphone label. Metoure Traore's guitar-and-horn heavy Horoya Band was formed in 1964, and eventually dissolved in the early '80s, as public tastes changed in the face of more modernized international pop. This is lush, lovely stuff taken off old albums and 45rpm singles that came out mostly in the early '70s -- the guitar work that underpins these tracks is uniformly gorgeous, though at times the brass arrangements can be a bit shrill and off-in-another-worldish. Cool stuff, though, with odd hints of Afro-Beat, surf, and Arabic influences. If you enjoyed the excellent "GUINEA" '70s compilations, then this disc is a nice chance to check out one of the better-known Guinean bands at greater length.

Africa music review A music fan from Boston Massachusetts

    Africa music review Absolutely cool!
This is a very energetic CD that draws not only in African percussion but also in Middle Eastern rythms (perfect music for shimmies, if you ask me) and from the sounds of many other places. Most tracks are fairly quick, so it's not a relaxing kind of album. Sometimes I don't like African percussion as I find it too jazzy and self absorbed, but this is not the case with this record. As it's very hard to describe the joyous music here, let me just say it's on the same wavelength as Gabrielle Roth's "Bones", Dead can Dance "Yulunga" or Hossam Ramzy "Sabla Tolo", but also very unique and distinctibly African flavoured at its core. An absolute must.

Africa music review Perfect For Percussion Lovers
I own a World music Club in Istanbul and this CD is one of the most popular among the other CDs we play in our place. Anybody hears Guem et Zaka in my place comes and asks the name and the label of the CD. Although it is a percussion dominated album there are also beautiful melodies created by various instruments. Not only percussion lovers but everybody will love this album hearing its irresistable sound. I personally know this with my own experiences in my place watching people dancing joyfully and unconciously with Guem Et zaka. Buy this album without hesitation, you will add a unique piece to your CD collection.
