Living up to its title, this 13-track compilation showcases how Malians are masters of assimilating new ideas and sounds into their own culture. At the crossroads of many ancient trading routes, Mali has always reflected diversity in its music, and Western instrumentation is just the latest addition to the culture. Male and female artists perform acoustically and electrically in various styles like bambara de segou, wassoulou, and n'goni, and the blues is never far away. Whether it is the electric guitar style of Lobi Traore or the country blues equivalent of Issa Bagayoyo's "Fengue," the comparisons to American blues are obvious, and all the singers, placed in a Memphis Soul setting, would show how much of our pop culture is indebted to Malian traditions. This, however, is the roots real deal, alive and flourishing, and as soulful in its own right as anything on the planet. --Derek Rath

Africa music review XLNT!
I love Hemisphere Records because they do such a great job of picking tracks. I have three of their compilations, and there is not a dud on any of them. But this is my favorite. Not only is there a nice variety of music, from the intensely rhythmic (''Sisinbo'') to the pensive (''Liberia'') to the minimalist (''Ouere Hana''), you can discern how African music influenced American music, and how the Africans have in turn borrowed from us with their own unique twist. The songs are all interesting, and they all bear repeated playing. This is a great introduction to African music, well worth the price. Great job, Hemisphere!

Africa music review Vital, exciting
The editorial review stresses how this music is not far from American blues. This is unnecessary. Since blues was created by Africans who were brought by force to America, why would it surprise anyone that they kept some of the sounds of their African traditions ?
The Malians musicians on this CD do not try to sound American. They try to create within Malian tradition, using either modern or traditional instruments. I love most of the songs, and most of the artists. Ami Koita and Kagbe Sidibe are my favorites, but the others are great too.
the music is happenning, it is energetic, rhythmic, and full of life. I saw that even people who have no special interst in African music are attracted to these sounds, so I recommend it to everyone !

Africa music review They are truly Queens!!!!!
I'm an avid African Music collector from the Soul Brothers to the Lion of Africa Mhalathini and The Mahotella Queens and everything else in between. But, as I listened for the first time to this group, I couldn't help, but feel hooked by the dueling guitar that played and danced above the others notes carrying you on their rythmic movements and transplanted to a time of struggle and rich creative juices that produced "Julieta". This tune exemplifies and reaffirm my review. A Must Have!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Africa music review African music for the 21st century
The Gnaoua were Moroccon musician slaves. Their music is a religion, each phase of a Gnaoui get-together belongs to a color, there's so much to say about this. Let me put it this way: Jimi Hendrix went to Essaouira where he met Gnaoui musicians and when he went back to England, Jimi had found his deepest self. From there to the Spangled Banner was but one step. BTW, if you are a music ethnologist, somebody in Essaouira taped a few afternoons of Jimi playing acoustic guitar trying to remember what he had heard the evening before. If you find these tapes... In the meantime, this is IT. The Gnaoui blended the best of Africa, Orchestre National de Barbs added the best of contemporary instrumentation, rythm and sound and the result is - the one CD you don't lend to anybody.

Africa music review Lyric
This disc is unique in the Ethiopiques series and might not appeal to performers with more Western influences like Alemayehu Eshete or Mahmoud Ahmed. It's a totally great experience of a different kind, though. The harp Alemu Aga plays sounds nothing like the Western orchestral instrument: it's low, buzzy, and very warm sounding, more like a cross between a bass and a bassoon. The vocals are low and whispery, closely following (or followed by) the harp. It really sounds like nothing else I can think of. The tracks sound very much like one another; there are no evident hooks or riffs, but the result is never boring. This CD and Joanna Newsom's The Milk-Eyed Mender, in very different ways, have really opened my eyes to the possibilities of the harp.

Africa music review Spiritual Music for Great Lent
This is a disc of Amharic religious and paraliturgical song traditionally performed during the Great Fast (Lent) in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The songs would be sung at family gatherings, coffee ceremonies, etc., to maintain a sense of religious devotion during the fasting period. It is therefore very quiet and meditative music, just voice and harp. This could be a wonderful experience for those who are not aware of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and her spiritual tradition.

Volume 5 in this remarkable series focuses on the music of Eritrea and Tigray (now a province of Ethiopia), the cradle of the Abyssinian Empire and homeland of the Queen of Sheba. Like the Ethiopian selections found elsewhere in the series, these were recorded in the late '60s and early '70s, a very modernist period for the region. Tigrina music has less overtly present jazz and R&B influences than its counterparts from Addis Ababa, retaining its own distinct rhythms and melodies, with the krar and tcherawata being the dominant instruments. These rare recordings are often political; especially of note are the banned recordings of Tekle Teska Ezghi, never released prior to his imprisonment by the new Ethiopian junta in 1975, and issued here for the first time ever. Excellently notated, Ethiopiques 5 continues the high standards of the series. --Derek Rath

Africa music review A Very Special CD
This is the only CD I have seen totaly dedicated to Tigrigna music. The songs here are mostly from the early 70's. The first four songs are by the great singer and Krar player Tsahaytu Berakhi. These are marvelous songs and great performances. The rest of the CD is also great and shows Tigrigna music at its best. Track 11 is an attempt by Mulatu Astatke to make a Jazzy version of a Tigrigna song. To me it is interesting but not on the level of the rest of the CD. A must for all Ethiopian and world music fans.

Between 1969 and 1975, Ethiopia's Amha Records issued 100 or so singles that paved the way for the country's modern music movement, an unmistakable fusion of funk and pop sprinkled with plenty of Middle Eastern melodies and a strong Afro-beat. Fueled by the liberating reign of Emperor Haile Selassie, music prospered, clubs opened, the jukebox found its way to the country, and musicians innovated. And, while there are dozens of memorable artists from this period, one--Mahmoud Ahmed--so perfectly fused wild brass, pop rhythms, and soulful vocals that he helped this music expand beyond his country's borders (it's no wonder he was the first modern Ethiopian musician to tour the U.S.). To call his music "funky" doesn't do it justice; this is wild stuff. "Kulun Mankwalesh" keeps a rocksteady beat even when the melodies leave the Western hemisphere; at six minutes, it's just long enough to hypnotize. "Ambassel" is slow and soulful, while "Mela Mela" has a great sax opening that is quickly ignored when the beat takes over. Most of these tunes date from a November 1973 LP and feature Ahmed with the genre-breaking Ibex band. And, while there are compilations in the Éthiopiques series that may swing better and keep faster tempos, this fascinating single-artist spotlight is a welcomed addition. --Jason Verlinde
