A real favoriteWith over t20 tracks there is virtual no stylistic overlap. A wonderful variety of music. The record works just fine as a collection of and also serves as a good jump point if you wish to explore African music further.

I never thought I'd say it - but this one wins hands downThis is the best CD Oliver N'goma has produced so far, I think it's safe to say. It's very eclectic - from the more classic central African rhythms we're all used to from him, to some strong Zairean kwasa-kwasa styles, and even to a few Latin American beats. Thoroughly infectious music to listen to over, and over and over. And his vocals are just the best. I only wish he would give concerts in Rome where we live. Oh well, the CD is the next best thing. Do enjoy it!

Swahili Afropop DanceI first heard this group blasting from the radio while riding on a bus from Dar es Salaam to Mbeya in Tanzania, East Africa. The album picks up on common Tanzanian social themes that everyone can relate to. Even if you don't know Swahili, the horn section, multiple guitar rythym and harmonizing vocals will engage you. Also available the album "Sungi" regorded in Germany.

SiyabamukelaAppx. 35 minutes in length, the back cover says this album, of all male chorus, is sung in the "traditional South African music known as Mbube". Steeped in South African tradtition, Mbubes' exact origin is unknown; but, it has been dated back in Zulu tradition as a form which was sung to the king, as royal music. The style appeared in the early 20th century and became popular to industrial and domestic workers from the rural areas. In the 1940s' one of these groups recorded "Mbube" meaning "the lion" which became a model for the international hit song "Wimoweh". Amaduduzo is a choir of Christians. Their style is most accepted by older South Africans, as the style of their ancestors. This is apparantly their only CD, made in 1989. Too bad, as this is a powerful CD to listen to. I have enjoyed this CD for years. African music you can actually hum along too. Good rhythms, drumming and vocals in english, zulu, and sotho. When I play this in my office I always hear positive remarks.

Tracks:
- Fatim

- Sobindo
- Salsa-Cora

This mid-'90s prize from kora innovator Djeli Moussa Diawara is one of his best, with a wealth of acoustic guitars, bright voices, and his trademark kora tramping around the globe for inspiration. This is an album of contemporary pop music, but unlike the work of his infamous brother, Mory Kante, he leans solidly on the acoustic side for his tools. Flutes, ngoni, and real-live carbon-based percussion rule supreme. Latin music is a major influence on this album, with Diawara's rocking "Salsa-Kora" the prime track--a solid rocker, a dance-floor hit that is unrelenting. He can also turn out a moving ballad, and his earthy, slightly raw voice is used to great emotional effect on songs like "Fatim." If you have encountered his more recent works like Flamenkora, then you already know how good it can sound. --Louis Gibson

My most cherished CD.I bought this CD on a whim 3 years ago, and have loved it ever since. The Turkish/African beats flow beautifully along with the choruses singing along. I would buy this CD for anyone who is interested in a wide variety of music.

Very happy house indeed! One of the best soukouss CDs ever, Werrason lets it rip with sizzling vocals and innovative arrangements. There is little arguement about the talent of these musicians. "Koffi Ayiana" is lush and evocatively haunting all at once, Didier Massela sing with his bass throughout and Bill Kalonji's animation is cutting edge stuff. You can enjoy this music any way you like because is highly danceable without the fast pace of most dance hits. Most of all, this is a "get happy and delirious" music. Its infectious, you can't help but get happy. Maison mere indeed!

Master of the Oud comes through againALL of Hamza's recordings are excellent - and how fortunate we are in recent years to be able to get so many of them, when just a few years ago they were so hard to find. Superb - get the lot - all of his recordings are a refreshing change from the modern transient music of today - this is ethereal - with a capital "E".
