Cape Verde music reviews

Although perhaps not as well known as some other groups who have preserved Andean folkloric music, Los Calchakis nonetheless have a unique style that is easily recognized by the cognoscenti. The breadth of the different styles that they play, as well as their mastery of the traditional instruments, is unlike anyone else. If you truly have an interest in Andean music, you will be duly impressed. I highly recommend this CD as well as any of their other (hard to find) music. You will be transported into an ancient, peaceful and spiritual world. Enjoy! Disfrutelo!

I'm a big admirer of Jorge Drexler's music/language richness and fluidity. He's not only a magician of love expression, but a very involved and passionate "world citizen," as demonstrated with this album of Fronteras, as well as songs in other albums (such as the jewel "Milonga del moro judío" in his album Eco). Borders, flags, one-sided entities only drive us to madness. Humanity is our primary quality, yet probably one of the least cultivated (as if we were animals of different species!).

But Drexler kneads all these topics--and love too!--much better than I could ever dream to do, so instead of chatting I'll refer you to him. I hope his music inspires you, as it inspires me.

No big words in his lyrics. His arte-poetica grows in the
Yupanqui-style: the greatness of the small things, talking by
themselves.

All what Drexler says becomes beautyfull, just because it is
simply true and coming from a human, transparently and completely
open tu us.
Combined with that, are the fine sensitivity in the melodies
that he creates, his arrangements and an evidently "total
aesthetical control" of the product that he presents.

Try "Memoria del cuero", and if you�r not spanish-speaking,
ask some friend to translate it for you while listening. This
tune, together with "De Amor y Casualidad" in his former album
"Llueve" puts definitly Drexler�s name in the first line of
the uruguayan musical concept.

Only a genuine uruguayan, could write-down, compose, arrange
and compute together all this materials. And JD is still doing
it for us. Cheers!

The mornas will move you emotionally, and the coladeiras will make you want to move your body.

This is one of my favorite CDs. The songs on it are very well played and sang. The CD is a well balanced sample of Capeverdean music with a Brazilian accent. Tito Paris is one of the most sought after musicians in Portugal and Cape Verde. Another Cd woth buying is "Fidju Magoado" from the same author.

The music in this album is very unusual.It is soothing , healing and over all leaves you with a calm feeling. It has a very literal feel to it, as in it transports you to the plains of South America and almost makes you feel the wind in your face.For people who dig wind instruments and emotional music this is a must buy.

I am from the United States and heard Illapu live perform, with my Chilian wife.

They were so wonderful, humble, talented and beauty, love and serenity just came out of their music.

A treat for all.

I first saw this band playing in a street fair in Palm Springs, years ago. I bought a couple of their CD's, and have been listening to them ever since. This band is the absolute finest, in relaxing Andean music. If you want to relax at night with the barbeque going, tiki torches, glass of cognac, this CD and this band is hard to beat!!

This is a great CD. Very peppy. I can play it over and over. It makes me feel like I'm in the mountains of Peru, dancing during a small celebration, on my way to Machu Piccu.

I've always enjoyed Bau's musicianship on Cesaria Evora's albums. It is wonderful to be able to focus on his fretwork and enjoy it's crystalline purity. His playing here is even crisper and more fluid than when he is adorning vocals. He meets the challenge of stepping out as the lead voice.This is a very enjoyable album.

I saw them in concert in London playing most of the pieces in this album, and they're a top-class group of artists!

This is a beautifully produced live recording of Tito Paris and his band. This album is a great listen and I can tell from the first time I heard it that I will be listening to it a lot. Wonderful, diverse, and dynamic, this album is full of energetic rhythms and very upbeat - I highly recommend this CD!
