Cape Verde has attained a fame far beyond what its small geographic stature would seem to justify, in great measure due to the work of morna diva Cesaria Evora. This small group of islands was uninhabited until Portugal settled it with its unwanted poor, its opportunistic pirates, clever business people, and slaves brought from the nearby African coast. Thus the archipelago has a unique, almost artificial culture. It's a true example of how people create culture as much as they are created by it.

This two-CD set is broken into two regional collections. Sotavento ("leeward") covers the islands of Fogo, Santiago, Maio, and Brava, where the majority of blacks still live. It features social satire called tabanka, women's social music (batuque), the accordion-driven funana, and work and play songs. Barlavento ("windward") shows the more diverse European elements (not exclusively Portuguese) that mixed with the African to create the roots of the most famous of Cape Verde's musical traditions, the morna of Boa Vista island. Also featured are wedding and festival music, and more formal styles that work with European instruments such as the violin.

Much of this music has been covered in individual discs on the Ocora label, but this collection is one of the best overviews of the region available, with good notes, marvelous pictures, and well-recorded, outstanding performances. --Louis Gibson

Cape Verde music reivew All Traditional!! Brings you closer to Cabo Verde
The music is wonderful and traditional. I enjoyed the funanna played. It reminded me of Santiago Island. It is a must to bring you to the traditions of rural Cape Verde.

Cape Verde music reivew grab it
A beautiul ep of remixes by Joe Clausell and Francois K. Very NY House, very jazzy, very cool. Amazon has an incorrect track listing, however: there are 3 remixes each of the 2 songs, but at 50 minutes playing time it's still great value.

Cape Verde music review A Top Notch Release from Wave Music!
Do you love the NY Club Body & Soul? Do you like soulful music? Listen for the uber funky Body & Soul Vocal Mix of CARNAVAL DE SAO VICENTE. Cesaria's vocals over an entirely new creation including horns and percussion courtesy of the men themselves, Joaquin "Joe" Clausell and Francois K. Unlike most singles, Wave music gives you more bang for your buck. Two tracks, 6 mixes, great music, even greater remixes! For those of you with an appreciation for ambient music: synths, wind chimes, etc. close your eyes and recline to the Acroostic Ambient Dub rendition (sans vocals) of CARNAVAL DE SAO VICENTE. Served chilled, this track is designed to groove and soothe.

Cape Verde music reivew great from start to finish
I only wish I spoke Portuguese, she has a such an evocative voice and the rythym is compelling. my favourites would be Soi Na Tchada and Falso Testemunho but that is a tough choice!

Cape Verde music review Sunshine music from Cape Verde
This album makes me happy every time I listen to it. Special recommendations: "Falso Testemunho", "Novo Olhar", "Nesosofre".

The songs I like most are the sambas. Maria Alice differs from the other Cape Verde female vocalists I know of (Fantchia and Cesaria Evora) in that she seems to lean toward samba (with some salsa syncopation) rather than tango and fado. So the mood is more major-key and, well, just plain happy.

Eco de Sombras, Peruvian diva Susana Baca's second album for the David Byrne-helmed Luaka Bop label, both lives up to the mystical implications of its title ("Echo of Shadows") and places her exquisite voice in the center of ancient-to-the-future acoustic grooves that make it an instant beyond-category classic. Watching her try to top this one will be a great pleasure for music fans! --Rickey Wright

Cape Verde music review Can't stop playing it
I discovered this CD accidentally and I haven't been able to stopy playing it. I carry around 1,500 songs on my iPod, but I've been playing this over and over again for the past 4-5 days. The music is so rich and poetic that every time I hear a song I seem to discover something new about it. I don't understand Spanish, but the phonetics of the words are so beautiful that they are songs all by themselves. I highly recommend this CD and can't wait to get her entire discography.

Cape Verde music review The Best
This CD is the absolute best of Afro-Peruvian music. It is romantic, steamy, and bold. I can't wait for her to return to the states on tour.

Cape Verde music review Shadows of the Sun
A lovely, simple, passionate album. Her voice is flawless. A rich instrument that breathes colors and maps into the song's journey. A world of feeling communicated through simplicity. Timeless.

Cape Verde music reivew Not authentic
This is a very commercialized version of paraguayan songs. I'm from paraguay, and did not enjoy listening to this CD. I highly recommend Explorer Series: Paraguay - Guarani Songs and Dances
instead.

Cape Verde music reivew shampagne
bubbly, full of colour and life and very immature and raw.
hard to grasp in first hearing ,by the western ear.
full of promise,or shuttered dreams ,depends on which mood you are in.

Cape Verde music reivew GREAT SURPRISE
This magnificent compilation of the music from Paraguay is a great introduction to this unique harp style which is the "harp of Paraguay", not existing other of its kind in the whole world. With its melodious rithm you can feel the sence of the beatiful fresh and warm life of central south america with its ucomparable sun & forrest along with its exotic and contagious melody. It's been an unexpected and a real pleasant surprise to find this album here

This cd is a good start for anyone interested in Afro-Peruvian music.

Cape Verde music review Susana Baca's roots
If you've got to know Susana's music from those albums produced by David Birne, you might consider that you've just listened to products prepared for the etno-jazz fans, albums that just exploits her beautiful voice and utilizes a lot of the most liked armonies by them (including the slow tempos and the silences). When I knew that one of her former albums was nominated for the Latin Grammy and not any of those from the Birne's age, I had a good feeling about it: "Lamento Negro" would've remained as a completely anonymous production unless the interest of a smart entrepeneur who bought the rights and remasterized the original recording (it was recorded for tape by totally unknown musicians!) and released it on CD. Because of that, you now can listen to genuine artists playing music with great joy an inspiration, mixing Susana's tender voice (cuter than today as it was recorded sixteen years ago), poetry, and afroperuvian tunes in a happy piece of true and sincere art.

Susana Baca has finally won the Latin Grammy for this album. I never thought this could be possible, but it was and it's fair. You'll agree, I'm sure.

Cape Verde music review Congratulations Susana Baca and Pablo Neruda
As the director of TUMI Music, who released this album, I would like to congratulate Susana Baca for her stunning recording, and also the late Chilean Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda for his inspiration. I am, nevertheless saddened that Susana's manager has expressed concern about the legality of this project. This previously unreleased album was originally recorded by Susana exclusively for EGREM in Cuba, who then had the right to license it to whoever they chose to. I had spent many days researching the EGREM archives till I found this rare jewel of a recording. We then licensed it from EGREM to release the album worldwide.
TUMI Music is delighted that Latin Grammy has recognized the beauty of this album and its cultural importance, since Susana interprets the poetry of the some of the best writers of Latin America.

Cape Verde music reivew A mixed bag
OK, I better admit it at the start: I am fan of this Capverdean singer with a sensuous velvety voice. I am a proud owner of five her CD's, and whenever Cesaria held a concert in Ljubljana (twice so far), I made sure I was somewhere near.

Recorded in 1988, The barefoot diva (La diva aux pieds nus) was Cesaria Evora's first album. Unlike her later later works, where she focused exclusively on mornas, this album offers a wider variety of styles.

It is interesting to follow the different fates that particular tracks on the album have seen. While there is a slight chance that you will hear any of the four beautiful mornas on the album - Destino Negro, Frutu Proibido, Traz D'Horizonte or Cabo Verde Terra Estimada - if you hear her on a concert today, it was the first track, Bia Lulucha, a coladera with a touch of zouk, that first made her famous in the local community. You are unlikely to hear it now. As for the remaining three tracks, Passei, Lucy and Despidida de Immigrante, they are rightfully and deservedly forgotten.

So while The barefoot diva is an important album, which launched her onto the French and European scene, I think it was only Miss Perfumado (recored in 1992), when she really reached her peak and her full potential.

Cape Verde music reivew The true voice of MORNA - Cape Verde's blues
La Diva Aux Pied Nus is an album which helps the listener actively enter the captivating magic of Cesaria Evora's voice. Morna, Cape Verde's "blues" which express love, sadness and longing, are captured in this beautiful collection of songs. "Samba Passeio" mixes the exuberance of the Samba with the nostalgia of her Cape Verde island of Sao Vicente. An impressive collection and a great addition to her other albums such as "Cafe Atlantico."

Cape Verde music reivew Great CD!
I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this CD! It was a risky purchase since I didn't recognize the artists, but it was definitely worth it. All of the songs on South America:Chile are excellent. The songs I enjoyed the most were Alturas, Toro Mata, La Palmatoria, and both Violeta Parra songs. I agree completely with the other review of this CD - Mejia's voice is wonderful. I highly recommend this CD for all Chilean music lovers!

Cape Verde music reivew Chilean classics of the Nueva Cancion style
A pleasant mixture of songs composed by Victor Jara, Violeta Parra, Horacio Salinas, the most prominent musicians from the beginning of the Nueva Cancion movement in Chile. Exquisite guitar playing by Rodrigo Alvarado and the clear voice of Maria Meija make this CD a pleasure. Concentrating on a few instruments - guitar, bombo drum and voice - make for a very clear, transparent sound.

Cape Verde music reivew This "Cesaria" CD is soul music
If you are interested in hearing Cesaria Evora for the first time, then I'd recommend Cafe Atlantico over this "Cesaria" CD. For those who already know her, then this Cesaria is a good CD though overall more sorrowful (maybe "longing" is a better word) than the Cafe Atlantico. The CD is about 44 minutes long. I like the first two tracks "Joaquim Paris" and "Ingrata" the best. Track four "D. Ana (Take 1)" is the best showcase for her voice / style. Track six "Tchintchinroti Na Figueira" is the only upbeat song on the CD. If you want "soul" then track seven "Caboverdeano N'Angola" hits the mark. I honestly had to listen to this CD several times to appreciate it. Hope this helps.
