This two-CD set is broken into two regional collections. Sotavento ("leeward") covers the islands of Fogo, Santiago, Maio, and Brava, where the majority of blacks still live. It features social satire called tabanka, women's social music (batuque), the accordion-driven funana, and work and play songs. Barlavento ("windward") shows the more diverse European elements (not exclusively Portuguese) that mixed with the African to create the roots of the most famous of Cape Verde's musical traditions, the morna of Boa Vista island. Also featured are wedding and festival music, and more formal styles that work with European instruments such as the violin.
Much of this music has been covered in individual discs on the Ocora label, but this collection is one of the best overviews of the region available, with good notes, marvelous pictures, and well-recorded, outstanding performances. --Louis Gibson

Sunshine music from Cape VerdeThe songs I like most are the sambas. Maria Alice differs from the other Cape Verde female vocalists I know of (Fantchia and Cesaria Evora) in that she seems to lean toward samba (with some salsa syncopation) rather than tango and fado. So the mood is more major-key and, well, just plain happy.

Lo comercial de Susana BacaThis cd is a good start for anyone interested in Afro-Peruvian music.
Susana Baca's rootsSusana Baca has finally won the Latin Grammy for this album. I never thought this could be possible, but it was and it's fair. You'll agree, I'm sure.
Congratulations Susana Baca and Pablo NerudaTUMI Music is delighted that Latin Grammy has recognized the beauty of this album and its cultural importance, since Susana interprets the poetry of the some of the best writers of Latin America.

A mixed bagRecorded in 1988, The barefoot diva (La diva aux pieds nus) was Cesaria Evora's first album. Unlike her later later works, where she focused exclusively on mornas, this album offers a wider variety of styles.
It is interesting to follow the different fates that particular tracks on the album have seen. While there is a slight chance that you will hear any of the four beautiful mornas on the album - Destino Negro, Frutu Proibido, Traz D'Horizonte or Cabo Verde Terra Estimada - if you hear her on a concert today, it was the first track, Bia Lulucha, a coladera with a touch of zouk, that first made her famous in the local community. You are unlikely to hear it now. As for the remaining three tracks, Passei, Lucy and Despidida de Immigrante, they are rightfully and deservedly forgotten.
So while The barefoot diva is an important album, which launched her onto the French and European scene, I think it was only Miss Perfumado (recored in 1992), when she really reached her peak and her full potential.
