This dashing and intelligent tribute to Walt Whitman's poetry as art song puts commitment to artistry at center stage. With uncommon sensitivity and magnificent voice, Thomas Hampson lovingly interprets 22 songs by various composers, successfully capturing the emotional range of the American bard's verse by delicately caressing the poetry and, alternately, igniting its every nuance. These song settings enhance the innate music in Whitman's poems, giving them passionate expression in another dimension. Craig Rutenberg's stellar accompaniment is a lesson in effective collaboration. Hampson's interspersing of four poetry readings is below this recording's interpretive caliber, but it's a nice touch. Non-Whitman-heads may find the entire recording a bore, though. - -Barbara Eisner Bayer

Ethiopia music review Couldn't find another place to ask, thus this line.
Am looking for the bugle calls commonly used when raising the flag and lowering it. Specifically, I am looking for "To the Colors" and "Retreat" in bugle calls. Do you have it?

Ethiopia music reivew my first patti smith album
for as long as ive known, ive grown up listening to distinct, strong, female voices. my father constantly played fleetwood mac and lone justice and looking back it has obvious influenced my musical tastes. the most fascinating and dimensional music to me today lies in bands like the distillers, hole, etc. This is because it shows the way in which a woman can take hold of something crude, something broken and make it new. i thought this was a purely modern thing until my father gave me "radio ethiopia". i love it, and honestly, i have trouble drawing any comparison between patti smith and ani difranco or liz phair because i don't like either of them. i think that the musical direction of today is such a good indicator of the way in which smith was so ahead of her time. i mean, "ask the angels" was released in 1976, but it was covered by the distillers in 2000 and i beleive it is just as relevant.

so i guess radio ethiopia is for you if you want the raw power of iggy pop (one of my other favorites, by the way) with the howl of brody dalle. dig in.

Ethiopia music review Radio Ethiopia
Smart, elegant, raw, pure, energy, power, shining, depth, grace, spirit, body, flesh, bones, earth, race, agonizing, despair, heartbreaking, squeak, elegy, life, ground, roots, leaves, perfection, high, languid, beauty.
All these words come through my mind while I think about "Radio Ethiopia". They might be excessive. Undoubtedly, they are not enough.

Ethiopia music review The Best of the Lot
I have always considered this to be the BEST Patti Smith album of them all, rocking, wild, raw energy and rebellious spirit, decidedly uncommercial and I still go crazy when she does these tunes live.
This is one AWESOME cd.

Ethiopia music reivew nice collection
This collection, I believe, is a re-issue from the mid 70's, or at least features tracks from the early 70's on it, seeing as the Upsetters and the Silvertones, who only recorded 1 lp in 1975, are featured dominantly on it.

There are some nice moments on this cd, especially the title track, but isn't earth shattering. In fact, Perry is quite placid on his recordings on the cd (which I why I assume it is an early 70's recording).

Not an absolute go out and buy cd, but would be a nice addition for fans of the Upsetters, Perry, or the Silvertones.

Ethiopia music review from the cradle
This magnificent cd recruits some of the killer vocal tunes that Lee Perry made during the Black Ark Era, giving an introduction to his later dub works with these songs. Very strong reggae for a good and cheap cd.

Ethiopia music reivew It is great, but...
...I'm not sure I understand the hype over this one. I like it a lot but I cannot put it on the same exalted level as Vol.'s 1, 3, 6,7,8,9 and 14. It might be something like a preference for Sam Cooke over James Brown...or it might not. I'm going to live with it some more. Track 4 is extraordinary. Anyway, you can't go wrong buying an Ethiopiques disc...

Ethiopia music review spectacularly emotional voice
Gessesse's singing goes so far beyond what one may be ready for -- yes, it's music to cast out demons, the voice of a dead lover being exorcised -- all within the framework of Marvin Gaye or Sam Cooke-style jazzy funk. Some of the most amazing music I've ever heard.

Ethiopia music review Ethiopiques, Vol. 17: Tlahoun Gessesse
I can almost say... I want to buy most it if not all of the Ethiopiques version, since most of these songs are exotic jewel to me. This CD especially tracks 8, 9, 10, etc... have wonderful lyrics & melody...lovely... Tlahoun Gessess is Ethiopian James Brown.... Thank you amazon for allowing us to come & sample these songs...

The introductory album to what is an ongoing series on the music of Ethiopia from the '60s and '70s features a variety of vocal and instrumental tracks from artists mostly unfamiliar to Western audiences. This brief period of liberated creativity before a military shutdown yielded an astonishing burst of creativity, melding the traditions of Ethiopia (geographically and culturally straddling Africa and the Middle East) with R&B and European pop in unexpected ways. Loping rhythms merge with Memphis-style horns, wheezy Farfisa organs, and quavering but passionate vocals that at times shimmer with brilliance. Early tracks by superstar Mahmoud Ahmed merge with rarities like the stunning Teshome Meteku, whose career spanned only four tracks total. Ending with the biggest ever hit, Getatchew Kassa's "Tezeta" (5,000 copies sold), this will leave you wanting more, as will the wonderful and comprehensive liner notes. --Derek Rath

Ethiopia music reivew Don't miss this one.
Wild, beautiful Ethiopian Deep Soul music - this album is sublime. Definitely in the same league of ethnic R&B as the great Intensified Ska reissues, but with the conspicuous presence of middle eastern and eritrean melodies and innovation. I would recommend this to any sensitive person who loves authentic music of any sort.

Ethiopia music review True Ethiopian nostalgia
This collection presents songs from what to me are the best years of Ethiopian music (1969-1975). The first three songs are by Muluken Melesse, who enjoys some kind of a legendary status among Ethiopians. These songs justify his reputation. His voice is really extraordinary, and the band plays in what was then a new style in Ethiopian music, which was more rythmic and smooth than the earlier "police orchestra" style. Muluken is followed by Mahmud Ahmad, in songs that are well known and sound as good as any. The two songs by Seyfu Yohannes are very special "Mela Mela" and "Tizita". These are arranged and performed so well that you wonder why he did not become a star. Four songs by Teshome Metuku are in the highest standard - Jazzy arrangements and mellow singings. There is the classic Tizita by Getachew Kassa, which to me is one of the best two versions ever recorded (the other is Muluken's version). Three instrumentals by Mulatu Astatke's band add to this classic CD, especially "Hewete" which should be recognized as one of the most beautiful Ethiopian instrumentals ever recorded. This collection makes you wonder where has all this talent disappeared, and sure makes you ask for more of the same.

With ties--most of them clearly nonbinding--to the sanctioned musical institutions of Ethiopia in the 1960s (police bands and the like), the singers and players on the Ethiopiques series of reissues were in a funky bind. They had pledged some allegiance to Emperor Haile Selassie I and his imperial declarations, but their muses picked up distant signals from North America, including jazz's horn charts, funk's on-the-one rhythms, and an overriding sense of urgency in music made by youth. Here's volume 8 of the Ethiopiques series, testimony in 70-plus minutes to the winning power of the youth culture's music. With the series' most unabashed nod to James Brown in Alèmayèhu Eshèté's six tracks, volume 8 goes further than its predecessors in documenting a jazzy, soulful, electric-keyboard-fueled scene that simply ignores conventional musical borders. Eshèté's vocals bark and then soar over the webbed rhythms with all the force of Brown's--and an additionally rich range of guitars and keyboards that race around and through each other like polyrhythmic drums. What volume 8 shows is that the impact of soul, jazz, and funk (try Lèmma Dèmissew on for size) provided so much quiltwork to be syncopated together in these hip, danceable tunes. Listening to Samuel Bèlay's band kick the horns over an artfully hanging-back rhythmic tide, it's hard to imagine that a musical culture this rich could be stymied by the late 1970s--just a few years after Selassie's regime was crushed. --Andrew Bartlett

Ethiopia music reivew totally surprising
The most immediate effect of listening to this CD for the first time is surprise. The rhythms on all songs are not traditionally Ethiopian, but closer to American R&B from the 50's and 60's. Even a traditional singer like Ayalew Mesfin joins with a funky song. Girma Beyene is a complete original, borrowing very little from his own roots. Lemma Demissaw sound best to my ears. I feel he is very comfortable with the American R&B and sounds real "cool". His songs are the high point of the CD. All songs by Alemayehu Eshete display his R&B style - very successfully. This is not authentic Ethiopian Music, but it is good Ethiopian music and I recommand it to lovers of this genre.

Ethiopia music review way up with my favorite cd's
I brought this record to a friend I was staying with out of town--he had a party that night and played it three times in a row. The whole Ethiopiques series rocks & this one with the combination of the Ethiopian pop thing and white-boots go-go grooves is just about pure pleasure.

Largely the work of formidable musician-arranger Mulatu Astatqe, the 14 instrumentals here were originally issued on two LPs in 1972 and 1974 in Ethiopia, and represent a curious blend of soul-jazz and R&B with just a smattering of Ethiopian roots breaking up the stabbing horn lines, wah-wah guitars, and simmering electric piano. Curious, because at the time jazz was not very popular in Ethiopia, but that is no reflection on the quality of these primitively recorded sides of idiosyncratic Afro-funk. The grooves are long and laconic, the sound reminiscent of Miles Davis's "In a Silent Way" paired with Cannonball Adderly and Roy Ayers. But, as with all things Ethiopian, the music retains its own unique and unmistakable identity, one somewhere between a late-night jazz hole-in-the-wall group and a supper club belly-dancing combo. There are some very inventive arrangements and vigorous soloing, rendering a highly articulate and listenable music that was, at the time, doomed to go nowhere. Such is the retrospective value of reissues. --Derek Rath

Ethiopia music reivew Great music, bad quality
This album has a great selection of music, but the recording quality is very bad. Try to listen to it before you buy it

Ethiopia music review Where have these guys been all my life.
I got this CD after viewing Broken Flower, the movie. I loved the soundtrack and went to Amazon to find the CD. They helpfully showed me the Ethiopiques CD, and I liked their cuts on the movie soundtrack, so I thought I'd take a chance. Everyone I play it for wants to know more about them. I know very little, but love everything on this CD. I will definitly try more of their stuff. My daughter says, "this music makes me happy."

Ethiopia music review cooking with jazz
Yes, I too bought this cd after seeing Broken Flowers.
The music is so captivating and moody- and best of all, if you enjoy cooking, this is the ultimate in cooking tunes.
Everyone I have played this cd for wants one of their own so far!

Ethiopia music reivew Fantastic
This CD is really more for the nostalgic type who went to see the game in La France. Ricky Martin is charming and catchy as ever on this CD and the other artists are also equally as entertaining. It is a very EUROPEAN sounding CD so for those of you afraid of latin and europop...stay away. I loved it--it reminded me of the craziness surrounding the World Cup and the partying in Paris.

Ethiopia music reivew Beautiful, enthralling music.
I am obsessed by Ethiopia and its culture, and am by no means an expert on any of it. I purchased this CD directly from Playasound's website and received the CD from France a mere week later. For once, an album had lived up to the online samples. This CD is magnificent. As I said, I know little about Ethiopian modes and scale, but traditional Ethiopian instruments are used on this CD: the washint flute, the krar (kirar), and kebero drums. Standout tracks are Foodhir, Piece Pour Krar, and Dinkara. The only thing I that I wish had been more extensive were the linear notes. But one can't have everything.
An exceptional world music CD.
