Guinea music review Undiscovered Treasure
I don't know why this CD is not better known. It has wonderful gutsy vocals and the acoustic band is a powerhouse. It's both energizing and soothing at the same time. For one of the best examples of the "new" traditionalism in Malian music, you can't do better than this!

Guinea music review Excellent Tribal Singing and Drums from Guinnea
Mamady Kieta is one of the living masters of djembe. If you like pure drumming, please refer to my review for Mamady's "African Drums." If you want to get caught up into the tribal experience, this CD has the group singing, log drums, kplango drums, djun djuns, shakeres, and dondo drums. Unfortunately, it isn't the same as being there and voluntarily or not being drawn into communal dancing, singing and drumming. To simply say the djembe is a healing drum misses the meaning of healing within a village. It is an extended family. Each life is dependent on the others. Bad feelings toward others or curses toward each other must be healed. These feelings usually do not survive this type of group experience. At the end of a good hunt or harvest, these gatherings were known to continue for days. Does it work? Try it! Cheaper than therapy. Definitely a heck of a lot more fun than therapy.

Guinea music review Beautiful collection of nightingale songs
This is yet another winner from Sittelle, Europe's largest publisher of CDs of sounds from nature. The name "nightingale" is, for many, synonymous with any outstanding singer, human or avian. On this disc, Jean C. Roche presents a series of nightingale recordings, all lengthy (the average is probably five minutes each) and all uninterrupted...no talking, no music, nothig added. Just more than one hour of beautiful bird songs in sharp, clear sound.

You don't have to be a nature lover to enjoy this one. If you are looking for a beautiful nature CD, this will fill the bill nicely. Actually, there are two species of nightingale, the common nightingale and the thrush nightingale. This CD presents recordings from both species. The common nightingale deserves its reputation as one of the great avian vocalists of the world. The song is loud, powerful, and has a wide range, often beginning with high, clear whistles before exploding in fiery, rich, warbled tones. The song of the thrush nightingale is slighly less musical but still outstanding by any standard. A nice bonus to some of the recordings included here are the background sounds, which create an evocative picture of the bird's habitat. In one recording, you can hear a second nightingale answering in the background; another has an evening ambiance (yes, these birds do sing at night), with the nightingale joined by crickets and an owl. Great!

Guinea music review Wonderful introductory bird song guide for Europe
This CD might be considered a junior version of Roche's "All the Bird Songs of Britain and Europe." That guide features almost all of Europe's birds on four CDs. This disc selects 99 of the most common birds of Europe and places them all on one disc, with one bird per track for easy access. For those not wishing to have the complete sound guide, this is an ideal alternative; it could also be used as a starter guide and you can graduate to the complete set as you become more familiar with the bird sounds contained here. As with the full-length guide, there are no species names announced on the disc, but the quality of the recordings is very high. Highly recommnded.

Africa is a musical world unto itself, characterized roughly by an accentuated tradition of rhythm and community. And while this anthology makes no argument for the essence of African music, it's extremely entertaining nonetheless. Why shouldn't the jittery pleasures of Senegalese mbalax (Cheikh Lo and Youssou N'Dour) rub shoulders with the gorgeously laid-back Afro-Cuban grooves of Guinea's Bembeya Jazz National or Eric Agyeman's punchy Ghanaian highlife? The middle of the disc takes a swing north to check out the pentatonic Nubian style of Ali Hassan Kuban, Ethiopian soul singer Mahmoud Ahmed, and techno-Algerian Hamid Baroudi. There's also rebellious South African star Miriam Makeba at her jazziest and Zimbabwe protest singer Oliver Mtukudzi. There's much more: from Zaire, the quicksilver guitars of Mose "Fan Fan"; the Afro-Congo-Portuguese experience of Mozambique's Orchestra Marrabenta; Toumani Diabate's kora virtuosity... And it's all, as they say, good. --Richard Gehr

Guinea music review one of the first rough guides cd's i ever bought....
and it is still one of my favorites. i would have to say that the music of west africa tends to move me the most, but this is one excellent compilation. every single song is a masterpiece. it is as varied as africa, and represents areas that most people never give a second thought to. this is not your paul simon discovery, these are the real artists. they move, they groove, and they croon with passion.

This mid-'90s prize from kora innovator Djeli Moussa Diawara is one of his best, with a wealth of acoustic guitars, bright voices, and his trademark kora tramping around the globe for inspiration. This is an album of contemporary pop music, but unlike the work of his infamous brother, Mory Kante, he leans solidly on the acoustic side for his tools. Flutes, ngoni, and real-live carbon-based percussion rule supreme. Latin music is a major influence on this album, with Diawara's rocking "Salsa-Kora" the prime track--a solid rocker, a dance-floor hit that is unrelenting. He can also turn out a moving ballad, and his earthy, slightly raw voice is used to great emotional effect on songs like "Fatim." If you have encountered his more recent works like Flamenkora, then you already know how good it can sound. --Louis Gibson

Guinea music review My most cherished CD.
I bought this CD on a whim 3 years ago, and have loved it ever since. The Turkish/African beats flow beautifully along with the choruses singing along. I would buy this CD for anyone who is interested in a wide variety of music.
